Ted Cruz gaining momentum in Texas AG race

Don't look now. Conservatives are on the rise.

As we’ve said before at RedState, Ted Cruz brought the house down at the RedState gathering in Atlanta. His story and his success as Texas Solicitor General are gripping. He knows exactly what he stands for, and he is as complete a conservative as you could ask for. At the moment he is the only declared Republican in the race.

Even though the election is 14 months away, this is a new era in electoral politics, and the race is on. A couple of weeks ago the Tyler Morning Telegraph (Tyler, TX) weighed in with an editorial called Candidate Cruz May Pique Voter Interest (which I think is a huge understatement).

They noted his impressive track record….

He has an impressive resume - educated at Harvard and Princeton, before becoming the state’s first Hispanic solicitor general and the youngest solicitor general in the nation. In that role, he successfully defending the constitutionality of the Texas Ten Commandments monument, winning in a 5-4 landmark decision before the U.S. Supreme Court; authoring a Supreme Court brief for all 50 states successfully defending the Pledge of Allegiance; and successfully representing Texas before the Supreme Court in Medellin v. Texas, which held that World Court cannot bind the U.S. justice system and the president cannot order the state courts to obey it.

and continues to say…

But he’s not just smart; he also understands the political process. He knows that being right isn’t enough; the GOP must also be in the majority in order to win elections. And that will take rebuilding coalitions.

Read the whole thing. And watch the coming months as the campaign and the race kicks into full gear.

Let’s run this hypothetical.

Rick Perry beats the living dogsnot out of Kay Baily Hutchinson. Texas rejoices, elects Perry.

Michael Williams wins a Senate seat.

Ted Cruz wins the AG race, and pushes Perry to run for Senate later, because he’d lose a primary to Cruz (positive pressure, people. Term limits are stupid, just shove them out the top :D)

This means Texas would have Rick Perry, Ted Cruz, and Michael Williams all leading the state. Not to mention that Cornyn, while generally a good Senator, sometimes does stupid stuff — I’d ruther have Perry.

If that happens, I’m moving to Texas. Dear god, I’m moving to Texas.

you had me right up until you brought in Cornyn!

He was my guy for a long time in Texas…but his current actions while running the NRSC have irrevocably burned bridges with me. I could deal with his Crist endorsement had he admited the mistake and promised not to do it again after he got his head handed to him by the base… but he didn’t do that…he’s simply given us the back of the hand and continued on arrogantly dismissing us all as a nuisance to be ignored…

I don't really think I could blame him

Richard Mullins Thursday, September 10th at 11:21AM EDT (link)

for the stuff that NRSC does. The NRSC seems to like moderates and not conservatives. We need to divorce him from that since it seems otherwise that still conservative. Until the moderate staffers there are gone, it will still be pushing moderates.

maybe...but if he's the leader...he's responsiblew for the staffers...

AceInTX Thursday, September 10th at 11:26AM EDT (link)

I won’t make excuses for him…he needs to yank back on the reigns and put the spur to the moderates at the NRSC who keep foisting these pathetic losers on us…and if he can’t control it…and if his integrity means anything to him…he needs to walk away…to do less tells me he agrees with it and is as bad as the worse of them over there!

How about we stick to Ted Cruz in the comments today? Everybody at RedState is aware of your personal special feelings for the NRSC and John Cornyn. Largely I share them, but I think that discussion had been had. And had. And had and had and had.

But Ted Cruz is a big, big deal, a fantastic candidate, and has been sorely under-covered here. Let’s talk about him MORE.

I only made a passing reference to Richard's post which I agreed with

AceInTX Thursday, September 10th at 11:54AM EDT (link)

I’m not sure we’ve discussed whether the staffers or Cornyn is the problem at the NRSC but if you want to keep that discussion off your thread I’m happy to oblige….

I like Cruz and said so elsewhere….and I agree…lets talk Ted Cruz…and Micheal Williams more!

I just saw multiple comments all headed off to Cornyn-land, wanted to steer them back toward the awesome Cruz.

And all Michael Williams references are good stuff.

Staffers have to be either moderates or mercenaries

Achance Thursday, September 10th at 11:37AM EDT (link)

with no political positions. As I’ve discussed many times before, the Democrats have a whole shadow government of non-profits, contractors and grantees, foundations, unions, law firms, etc. so that a Democrat who loses his job or office never misses a pay check. Republicans have little like that and are notoriously parsimonious and disloyal towards staff. Just as with officeholders, if you become embroiled in ANY controversy, you get kicked to the curb and left there to rot because no Republican wants to be seen with you. And if you’ve offended the Democrats enough even if another Republican will hire you, both s/he and you get trashed by the Ds and the media.

If your job is to be a congressional or legislative staffer, you can’t become known for advocacy of positions that are unacceptable to Democrats because if your member loses office or the Republicans lose the majority, you go back to selling real estate in Podunk

For years I've stayed out of voting in the Primary

Richard Mullins Thursday, September 10th at 11:12AM EDT (link)

but no more. This time, I voting for sure because I’m not as sure that we would get the right candidates for office. I’m sure of Perry winning the nomination for governor but I’m not as sure for other positions.

No more staying out of the primaries, I voting in them in March 2010. I might have started sooner, if I lived back home in San Antonio(we’ll even my parents don’t live in San Antonio anymore and Duck and Dodge got 2 more votes against him). True conservative vs squish. I knew what I would vote for.

Tyler

SgtKirk Thursday, September 10th at 12:15PM EDT (link)

I just want to share my amazement that my hometown newspaper is being mentioned on RedState!! Bring’s a tear to this Tylerite’s eye. I hope the rest of Texas catches up to our level of Conservatism soon. Tyler can claim both U.S. Rep Louis Gohmert and Texas Rep. Leo Berman, so it doesn’t surprise me that our paper is running articles on strong conservative already.

Hello from Spring

Richard Mullins Thursday, September 10th at 12:25PM EDT (link)

There’s a lot to be happy for. I live in an area that has Ted Poe for Congress and Debbie Riddle for State Rep. I think you should be proud. If only the deepest red area like West Texas started posting story on Ted Cruz, it would be better. At least, you don’t have to deal with the dribble from Hearst,Cox or whatever liberal newspaper company is here in Texas.

Hello from Amarillo

irishgirl Thursday, September 10th at 12:46PM EDT (link)

The subtitle to this diary was cheering, to say the least. Go Ted Cruz and Micheal Williams! And I, too, can’t stress enough about voting in the primaries. I didn’t realize how important that was until a couple years ago.

In the middle

SgtKirk Thursday, September 10th at 12:51PM EDT (link)

Tyler is dead center in the middle of Dallas and Shreveport just south of I-20, about 2 hours either direction. Easy access to the big city without having to deal with any of the big city problems. Anything less than a 5 or 6 hour drive here is nothing. The wife and I just made a 4 hour drive to Galveston over Labor Day weekend and it still seemed like a short drive!
