Did you hear about Toyota?
It is impossible these days to hear a newscast or read a front page without mention of yet another recall, damaging revelation, or charge against Toyota. Holy mackerel. Never, ever, has a passenger vehicle issue become such a matter of such public high dudgeon. Obama’s trained talking monkey Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, announced, “My advice is, if anybody owns one of these vehicles, stop driving it.” He further beclowned himself by speaking of “holding their feet to the fire”, exclaiming “we will not sleep until every Toyota is safe to drive.” [Would that he showed such concern for the safety of drivers of union-manufactured and government-owned GM and Chrysler cars.] Democrat senators are making “that noise”, and now at least one congressional committee is set to hold hearings.
Now the media breathlessly reports that instead of 19, the number of deaths now being attributed to the nebulous “rapid acceleration” defect is 37 [since the Prius model is a prominent offender, am I the only one that sees irony here? Just me? OK, sorry, my mistake] over the last 10 years, and will continue to grow, according to the LA Times.
37 deaths (or maybe 100) in 10 years due to a manufacturing defect? Seriously, more people have died from hyperventilating during an Obama speech (mostly women but at least one FBI guy). And for this, we have non-stop front page and air media coverage, and the Transportation Secretary telling Americans not to drive Toyotas? What are we to make of this? Is this the worst vehicle defect ever?
Not even close.
Exploding GM trucks killed 1800* people from 1973-2000
As in, burned to death due to ruptured gas tanks in side-impact collisions.
Just saying. And while the 1800 number is fanciful (400-700 is more likely), it is a fact that they settled over 300 lawsuits averaging $1.6 million each, as of 2000.
What else is a fact is that GM was asked to recall the vehicles in 1993, and refused. I guess some companies are too big to fail. [Oh wait..... ] Interestingly, no headlines. You can count for yourself the deaths attributed to fires in 1993-2008 C/K truck collisions, after the recall refusal.
Not that you’d know it, but there are dozens of recalls every year (mostly GM, Chrysler, and Ford, in my observation), and in case you missed it, there is currently a recall of Chrysler Jeep vehicles in which the vehicle is in danger of “the wheel assembly separating from the vehicle”. Did you miss the headlines on that one? I know I did.
Why go after Toyota?
Oh come on. Really, you have to ask that? Turns out your lovable, huggable EPU is not the only one connecting the dots here. Brian Johnson of Breitbart’s BigGovernment.com is all over it as well.
Not only is it perfectly logical, but evidence is lying around, out in the open, as to why Obama’s government is jumping all over Toyota. The national partisan media, as reliable as the tides, is as always carrying the water of big-government anti-market Democrats. But anyway, much of following is drawn or inspired from Johnson’s article. Just follow the bouncing ball.
- GM now stands for Government Motors, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Democrat Party. It serves no substantial purpose beyond converting taxpayer money into union money.
- Democrats and unions go together like Democrats and corruption. Or unions and corruption. Unions provide legwork, volunteers, stuffed ballot boxes, and billions of dollars in campaign funds to Democrats. Democrats funnel billions in taxpayer money back to unions through earmarks and front groups like ACORN. Democrats also pass extremely union-friendly (aka anti-freedom, anti-business) laws, and fill bureaucracies with union-friendly people who generate and enforce union-friendly policies of all sorts.
- GM can convert more money to union money if it actually sells cars.
- Toyota is the biggest automaker in the world, and currently runs a close second to GM as the biggest seller in the United States.
- Toyota’s superior quality of vehicles is undisputed by any serious industry professional, and by most Americans. GM merits at best a ho-hum in quality. Chrysler stinks.
- Many Americans reflexively revolted against GM when they became Government Motors.
- Toyota has factories in 8 states with 35,000 employees. They are not unionized.
You see where this is going, right?
- GM, and therefore the United States government in Democrat hands, sees to benefit greatly if Toyota were to take a serious hit in market share.
- The United States government is in charge of all sorts of machinery, including recalls but also including public pronouncements by the trained talking monkey Transportation Secretary, who can greatly raise the profile of Toyota problems.
- There really is no such thing as mass manufacturing modern, extraordinarily complex vehicles, governed by thousands upon thousands of regulations, without defects. Even Toyota, whose quality is legendary (and rivaled only by Honda in the mass market), cannot build perfect cars. So recalls will happen. And this one did.
- The American national media, the Democrat Party house organ, dutifully ran with this. Just as they did with Sarah Palin’s pregnant daughter, and before that, George Allen’s “macaca” moment, and in October 2004 (just before the election) the since-forgotten Al Qaqaa story (look it up).
And there you have it! Instantly increased market share for GM, less for Toyota (not to mention those stock prices). Hearings that will keep it in headlines for months. More cash in union pockets, and less in the pockets of free market companies with non-union employees. And with any luck, we can expect to see increased regulation of Japanese manufacturers, because clearly they need government’s delicate touch. We’ll see government pushes to unionize employees, most likely by nefarious, intimidating, and outright illegal means. Yes, the government doing something illegal. Is that a surprise to you?
Today it’s Toyota. Tomorrow it’s you.
And like my crudely constructed poem at the top suggests, don’t be obtuse. The “they” is the Democrat Party, with their other vile partners, union and media. They have an agenda, and it has nothing to do with increasing your freedom, your prosperity, or your quality of life. It has everything to do with controlling you, and rewarding their friends.
*In truth, the reports vary from 155 to 725 to 1800, depending on who you are reading (the 1800 coming from a Ralph Nader group, YMMV). But I find it amusing to use the most damning numbers possible when targeting a government-owned union spit-bucket. Just like they do to everybody else.

techsan (Diary) Thursday, February 18th at 8:13AM EDT (link)It’s an observation I had as well.
It’s a glaring example of why government and business should not collude. To use a liberal argument, at best it has the appearance of impropriety. Whether or not it’s true (and I believe it is), the conflicts of interest are many.
What’s as shocking is the lack of perspective on the reporting. I recall learning about basic reading comprehension in 6th or 7th grade…where you have to consider the motives of the characters in a story. Those grade-school concepts escape the self-described experts in the media. How could any rational person not see this for what it is?!?
The election cycle cannot come soon enough. A conservative congress needs to unravel this mess and set the market free again.
In the end, all we have on our side of the debate are facts and history.

Funny you should mention Ford.
blooch Thursday, February 18th at 11:29PM EDT (link)Jerry Flint, in his ‘Backseat Driver” column in Forbes, thinks Ford might overtake GM in sales, maybe next year. He’s totally written Toyota off because of the “unintended acceleration disaster”, as he puts it.
Flaming Pintos aside, it would be hilarious if, after all the efforts of Obama, unions, and the MSM, Ford came out on top of GM. I guess we’ll know that Ford is on top when the talking heads start screaming about deadly hood releases or something on the Taurus. A little red-on-red would be OK with Jerry. He longs for the halcyon days of Ford v. Chevy without all those pesky furriners.
Flint is a pretty funny guy, though. He says, “GM may even pick up some sales from former Toyota customers worried about sticky accelerator pedals”

The last I heard on the story, the woman had trouble with the car and stopped to have it looked at by a mechanic. It was reported second hand that at the scene she said she couldn’t get it to stop.
The last I heard (my daughter lives in the area), it was ruled a malfunction of the car, and I don’t know the make of the car, but think if it was a Toyota product, this would be national news. The driver wasn’t charged, but will be sued.

Consumer Reports
Go_GM Thursday, February 18th at 1:28PM EDT (link)Consumer Reports has removed Toyota from the recommended buy list.
The Blue Book trade-in values have slid on their cars.
Why? Because of the sheer unprecedented number of cars being suspected of failure.
No one has stepped up and said “don’t buy their products” and if this works out in a free market way, Toyota may dodge the bullet.
They have rebuffed frame-rusting claims on the last generation Tundra for years that in some cases led to the spare tire falling from the rear underbed to the pavement. They have wrangled with an admitted sludge build up in engines for near a decade. Because they are doing the right thing following a visit from our trade reps, discolors their allegiance to their customers.
When you dredge up Pinto and whether it’s 175 or 1800 gas tank fires, the reachback is not an indictable offense in today’s market.
People need to realize that vehicles powered by up to 400hp and attaining speeds of 100mph are far more difficult to engineer for safety and bullet proof reliability than your average Waring Blender.
If you look at the cars recalled in the last five years, discounting the current debacle, you will see that the recall volumes are pretty equal among the top maruqes sold in America. Ford, GM, and to some extent, Chrysler are ranking in the upper spots on JD Power Reliability surveys and your attempt to slur them by connecting them to the current administration is abhorrent The money taken by the manufacturers was loaned, not given and they depend on sales to generate profit to repay and go private again. The “spitbucket” union workers are screwed down much tighter in the workplace than you are and you can curse union management till you are blue in the face, but the the ones getting the job done are to be commended.
Go_GM? No thanks, I'd rather walk! Hahaha. Just kidding...well, not really.
kyoufuu (Diary) Thursday, February 18th at 1:49PM EDT (link)Buuuuuuuuut…why say “don’t buy Toyota” when the mouthpieces in the media and DOT can imply it?
And it’s not the case that a large number of cars are “suspected of failure.” A large number of cars contain the gas pedal that can fail. It’s not as though there are millions of toyotas out there accelerating out of control and killing everyone.
Also, GM and Chrysler were loaned money by the government as part of TARP. This was when Bush decided to overrule congress on the matter. Later, though, as part of the bailout, the Fed decided to outright BUY large stakes in the two companies.

I started thinking this is a witch hunt when GM suddenly began offering pretty sweet trade-in deals for Toyota owners on new GM vehicles. Then there was something about the power steering system on a handful of Camrys. We’re just wondering what the next shoe the gubmint decides to stomp on us with will be.

I drive them, I sell them, they are the best.
Bob_S Thursday, February 18th at 4:50PM EDT (link)I’ve driven them for over 20 years. I’ve sold them for the last 10 months (career change due to this wonderful economy). They are the best cars on the road and it’s a media frenzy causing us to lose sales.
The acceleration issue is due to incorrectly installed floor mats. Hook them down as instructed and don’t put winter rubber mats on top of you carpeted mats. They won’t get stuck. We are modifying the size of the pedal to prevent human error.
The sticky pedal only involves the pedals made by a North America company (outsourced to China no less) and only on cars with many many miles on them. It doesn’t happen instantly, it happens over time and is very noticeable, if it happens all. We are modifying these pedals, new and old, just to be safe.
The Prius is not losing braking power. It’s a typical hybrid brake (for Ford it’s an issue for Toyota it’s a problem). When the brake is applied, at some point the brake transitions from electric generating to hydraulic brake. If you hit a pot hole or slippery condition, the ABS will kick in. The person feels a slight, split second shift. That’s all. It’s a feeling. A software fix was created to address the 100 or so complaints of the feeling since July.
Has Toyota handled this well. No. But they are doing the right thing.
Now of course, any knucklehead who has had an accident over the last 10 years while in a Toyota will blame it on the car, not the driver. And the insurance companies are going to be happy to pass along the lawsuits to Toyota. Already the Trial Lawyers are lining up to line their won pockets. What a country.
One last thought. Four weeks ago, my 22 year old sons life was saved by the crumple zones in his 1996 Camry (perfect shape, beautiful car) when he was rear ended by a Ford 150 going 40MPH. The driver’s dog jumped between his legs. Knucklehead with a capital K. Thank you Toyota for the safety features you put in your cars.

maddog (Diary) Sunday, February 21st at 7:54AM EDT (link)Sienna. Great van. Very reliable and not a part of all these recalls. We didn’t even consider Chrysler (the only American manufacturer that didn’t forfeit the minivan market)
Given the long-term track record, Toyota deserves some slack. Overall, they still have run circles around GM and Chrysler in terms of reliability and safety. The American cars improved over the last decade or so (they’re still not there yet) but let us not forget why that improvement even took place: competition from Toyota, Honda, and others. The Japanese have been eating GM’s lunch for decades because they simply make better cars- even with this factored in. This hopefully will pass as Toyota will learn from this and continue to make excellent cars that outpace those of GM and Chrysler.
I love the new van. The extra bonus is sticking it to Chrysler by not being an accomplice to sustaining the walking dead.

The protests against nuclear reactor construction come to mind, where you would have the news organs harping on the dangers but if you actaully did comparisons just about every other form of power was considerably more dangerous.
