MEMBER DIARY

Vengeance is Mine, Saith Obama

Obama tried it all. Closing Guantanamo. Ending the war. Civilian trials for terrorists. The surge.

Now he’s just killing, with a remarkable lack of dissent from his own side (remember: “Bush lied. People died.”).

So we learn from drone operatives (literally) that Obama is, after all, and for solid ‘political’ reasons… a stone killer.

From Newsweek:

Some counterterrorism experts say that President Obama and his advisers favor a more aggressive approach because it seems more practical—that administration officials prefer to eliminate terrorism suspects rather than detain them. “Since the U.S. political and legal situation has made aggressive interrogation a questionable activity anyway, there is less reason to seek to capture rather than kill,” wrote American University’s Kenneth Anderson, author of an essay on the subject that was read widely by Obama White House officials. “And if one intends to kill, the incentive is to do so from a standoff position because it removes potentially messy questions of surrender.”

Read the whole thing. Personally, I’d trust a soldier on the spot more (even with the messy question of surrender) than a highly paid antiseptic atty on the seventh floor of the CIA.

Besides, some recalcitrant attys are already arguing that the attys with their fingers on the launch button are unlawful combatants because they are not subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice and are not uniformed themselves. Hmmmmmm. Did someone else make that same argument in another context? Issa? Issa?

While these morons are still out trying to do citizen’s arrests of Rove, etc., they are not saying a word even though Obama has taken it further in two ways: stepped up drone attacks in Pakistan and assassination orders against at least one American citizen.

In the first case, the occasional drone attack under Bush was reported something like this: “The Pakistani government angrily protested the latest drone attack in which an Al Qaeda spokesperson reported 17 civilians were killed.” The pace of these has gone WAY up, but if they are reported at all, it’s more like: “US officials reported that 5 terrorists were killed in the latest precision drone attack. The obligatory protests came from Islamabad, but it’s well-known that the Pakistani government secretly approves of these attacks.”

In the second case, weren’t there reports that Obama had targeted at least one American citizen (Adam Gadahn?) for assassination? So the same lefties who railed that Bush needed to give civilian trials to foreigners captured abroad didn’t bat an eye when Obama decided to take a short cut against Americans.

When is the last time Code Pink or Cindy Sheehan were shown on TV? Have they gone silent, or is there no reason for the press to cover them in any anti-Obama protests?

Code Pink is too busy palling around with Hamas in Gaza, the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, and the Taliban in Afghanistan. Anything to harm Israel and the United States is something they can believe in:

Air Force Lous, as I understand it.. Someone with first hand knowledge of the Predator program may chime in to contradict me, and I will be taught.

In any case, I strongly doubt there are Predator consoles run by lawyers or anyone else in the White House. That’s a specialized job.

To your broader point, civilian control of the military need not mean the micromanagement of it that liberals usually try. Lacking much in the way of military experience or respect for the armed services, they tend to treat it as one more tool in their political toolbox.

But the military team operating the Predator gets the missile launch go-ahead from a CIA atty. Read the Newsweek article linked above and attributed directly by name to at least 1 CIA atty who made the kill calls personally.

And according to the article, it was the 7th floor of the CIA building, not the White House (nobody is saying that – that I know of).

Those who know these things also know that the 7th floor of the CIA building in Langley is the floor where the CIA director (and deputies) all have their offices.

to resort to mass indiscriminate killing.

Each Brigade in the Army, for example, has a contingent of small UAVs used for reconnaissance. The AF flies the predators and other large, armed UAVs. These are flown by remote pilots normally located stateside though they can be flown by personnel on the ground in the theater. They are controlled in the same manner as AF aircraft. Sent to observe/support a priority operation and available to be “sliced” to a subordinate element in need or to react to developing intelligence about the where-abouts or activities of known terrorists.

There are also large, extremely well armed UAVs operated by Other Government Agencies (OGAs), NASA and the Border Patrol for example. The Reaper is one as is Global Hawk. These are occasionally made available to the Regional Command that controls the airspace in theater but normally they remain out of the reach of the Regional Command.
