MEMBER DIARY

Will Romney reach out evangelicals and social conservatives? Will his Mormon supporters try to reach out to them on his behalf?

I think Romney is plagued by an image of his past relationships with east coast liberals.

If it weren’t for him claiming to to the left of Ted Kennedy or appearing hold hands with left wingers, he’d could nudge the religious right into supporting him openly.

- he’s a former missionary.
- he gives millions of dollars to his Church, who in turn has used that money to fight left wing activism
- if he’s a religious Mormon it is very likely he doesn’t smoke, drink, or even use any form of recreational drug

I find it amusing  he won’t speak the language  of the religious to religious people, despite being a former missionary.  Why doesn’t he talk about what he has in common with Catholics, Protestants, and evangelicals?

Why doesn’t he go for portraying himself as a “Mormon Tebow” amongst  social conservatives?  He doesn’t have to be loud about his faith or anything, he just needs to prove he’s not as liberal as he is painted out to be.  He’s not Bill Maher… he’s not part of the Hollywood liberal crowd.  I don’t think he’s  Harry Reid, either.

A lot of conservatives think he stands for nothing.  He should at least be open about his faith and how it is a part of his life… to show he actually believes in something.

Please tell me I’m wrong about this, but I think a lot of conservative Christians view Mormonism as just a bunch of fake Christians.

Romney does have numerous similarities with social conservatives and the religious right, but he might be thinking that he could accidentally provoke a backlash if he starts speaking too much on his faith.

Lots of protestants and evangelicals have problems with some rituals and aspects of Catholicism but were warming up to Santorum’s social conservatism and shared ground on issues.

“Enemy of my enemy is my friend.”

      Romney
      - allegedly believes in GOD.
      - puts his money to work for his religion
      - was a former missionary… this is pretty hardcore for the religious
      - Mormon leadership and Mormons allegedly espouse very socially conservative views

Actually if you use the term social conservatives instead of evangelicals, then a generic Mormon candidate would be a tight fight. I don’t agree with their theology, but Mormonism toes the line very good on social policy. Remember they were one of the groups attacked in California for supporting the marriage amendment.

He let himself get undermined by Santorum and Gingrich. I’ve been keeping up with the race and his campaign has only itself to blame for being weak amongst social conservatives.

He’s a former missionary, for crying out loud, and no hardcore protestant candidate was left after Bachmann and Perry dropped out. If his campaign didn’t ignore the fact he was a missionary and if he would have played up his ties to his religion and how it is a part of his life… he could have made social conservatives, evangelicals, and protestants in general relate to him.

Santorum extended this race by going social conservative and Romney let him do it.

Romney could have easily played the Mormon Tebow… the straight arrow. “Hey look at me. I’m really Mormon and you guys can count on me to be socially conservative because I give boatloads of money to the LDS Church, I put my money where my mouth is. I’m really Mormon and I that means I likely don’t drink, smoke, or drink coffee. I was also a missionary… I know how it is to get mocked for trying to convert people. I’ve been married to the same girl for decades. I’m legit… got street cred. Money I have given to the LDS Church has probably gone to fight the social liberals you guys don’t like. Vote for me!”

he’s not conservative enough for an American but for a Euro he upsets lefties on his side enough.

He’s losing out on people who are inclined to go door to door and promote a cause. He’s losing out on church going people. Churches are basically social clubs where people often times talk to each other.

He could have good word of mouth… or could have had good word of mouth.

Santorum basically slapped him around with no money by painting himself up as more social conservative than those who were left. If Romney would have tried, he could have won some states Santorum won or made races much closer by dispelling the idea he was ultra liberal on social and moral issues.
