EDITOR OF REDSTATE

Welcome

And now we start our fifth year.

This week is our 4th birthday week. It is also the launch of RedState 3.0. In the next week we’ll have lots of guest posters coming to the site. We’ll be highlighting some of our best content on the front page. We’ll also be working hard to build up our state and local sites.

Welcome to RedState 3.0. We’re live.

Have you decided to not bring the old content over after all?

  • Rod_Patrick

Thanks for this new and well-designed website.

    ) Goodluck

  • Erick

Right now, the priority is getting the new site up. We’ll consider content porting later.

  • SteveLA

“Pull a Kowaliski”…what the heck is that, well I know what that is, but what does the hitting that button do?

  • rbdwiggins

    ie., Pulling a Kowalski.

  • Erick

When you reply to yourself, that’s pulling a Kowalski.

  • KBDay

I really appreciate this new setup–I did my first post here (brought the post I did today at old site over) and the interface is very easy, very user-friendly. When I saw the img tab, I was happy as my hound dog when he steals my sandwich.

Best to all and hope ya have a fine weekend. Kay

  • Erick

And I’m glad you like it. I think this interface is a lot easier than the old.

  • Chancelot

I’ve been following RS for a while now, but with the new site, I figured it was the perfect time to join in the fun. Love the new site, and congrats on 4 years.

  • Rod_Patrick

    Boss Erick,

I’m a moron. Can tell me exactly what it means?

    Rod

  • rbdwiggins

    Good choice, Erick.

  • Rod_Patrick

I’ve read the special blog dedicated for Alex Kowalsky, the legend. So, does it mean that I should only reply to my own comments?

Can’t help it, you know. I’m a moron. He! He!

  • Mayhem

    This is awesome, Erick.

  • Achance

Now all I have to do is learn to use it with some reasonable facility.

  • Rod_Patrick

    Mr. Erick,

In my computer, all the buttons on my own posts say “Pull A Kowalski”. All the buttons on the posts by the rest(including Mr. None) say “Reply To This”.

The same is true for everyone else.

Erick please tell me: I’m correct, Ain’t I?

I’m quite a genius, like my Old Pal Mac. We both don’t know anything about the internet.

    Tricky! Tricky!

    Thanks and regards.

    Rod

  • Erick

Alex, more so than any other user, has had a long habit of replying to his own replies. Internally, we’ve always called replying to yourself “pulling a kowalski.”

We decided to incorporate that site wide.

  • krempasky

Our 4th birthday, but we’ve completed 4 years.

  • Rod_Patrick

Thanks to Redstate and thank you.

    Rod

  • Erick

That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.

  • BrianH

It has some cool new features I REALLY like such as the tag buttons on the comment box. And some other things it will take a while to get used to (not bad things just different).

    Good work guys!

I just had a thought for an enhancement. How about a spell check button for comments (maybe run the text through a spell checker as part of the “preview comment” actions? It’ll still require that people proof read what they write, but it should help catch the really stupid errors.

  • Erick

But Firefox, Safari, and IE 7.0 all have spellcheckers integrated into the system, so we figured it would not be necessary.

  • alaskaescapeartist

The site is all that it promised to be and more. It is going to be a pleasure to use as a reader and a participant.

I’m certain the sponsors are pleased as well.

  • Rod_Patrick

To RS Team, I do not know how I can thank you enough, guys.

One question: Did you really dump all Ron Paul supporters’ blogs? He! he! I’m just pulling your legs!

  • Neil_Stevens

Our Editors are having to ensure a key inconvenience at the moment, too.

Ultimately we had to launch the thing, rather than let the perfect be the enemy of the good, though.

  • Andysforsmalgovernment

    Thanks for the new site.

    And happy birthday!

  • YouthlyConservative

  • redneck_hippie

And the new banner logo is great, too! I liked it at the beta, but now that it’s official I like it even more.

  • John_E

    Is this really me?

It’s kind of strange what happens when you click on somebody’s name. And I’ve noticed other oddities as well.

Is there a known issues list? How do you want issues reported? Besides ‘with patience’.

  • John_E

    them

    smile

Don’t know how many more “great” jobs my hypoglycemia can take…

  • gamecock

but given the vaporization of former blogs on RS2.0, you never before existed until now.

  • mbecker908

RS2 Tracker noted the “new” posts and would link to the top new post. Will that be added to RS3?

It’s great, and I certainly hope the Directors provided bubbly for all the hard work…

  • Neil_Stevens

Unfortunately the code we received from the consultants had positively no support for tracking new posts and comments at all, and we didn’t have time to implement it from scratch.

It will come later. It is planned. I just can’t promise it will come quickly.

  • Neil_Stevens

Nothing was vaporized. It’s all on the archive, as I already said, heh.

Every old link to a diary or a post still works.

  • civil_truth

I finally clicked on the article title and that happened to work. Or did I miss a “Comments” button somewhere?

Good clip to accompany your lauch.

  • civil_truth

    Once I stopped cracking up…

  • Neil_Stevens

No harm in supporting old habits, heh.

  • cliffjrfan

    Thanks Redstate!

  • mbecker908

a diary or just a linked pdf with the planned enhancement list, prioritized and a planned implementation date if one exists?

It would be good to know what’s in que and when we might lok for changes.

    Thanks.

  • Neil_Stevens

Perhaps, but I’m not sure. I have a feeling that now that we’re launched, there will be a little let up.

The amount of effort we’ve been getting from Eagle has been unsustainable. It’s been a lot of effort from good, high-quality developers.

So I imagine sometime next week I’ll start coordinating with them where to go from here.

I’ll try to keep you all updated though.

  • civil_truth

I note that when I wish to reply to an upthread comment, my comment box is located at the bottom of the full thread, which means that I have no easy way to view the comment to which I’m replying at the same time I’m trying to compose a reply.

I’m not sure what can be done about it, but trying to navigate back and forth will drive me nuts.

This will become a particular problem on active threads where there are many levels of comments going on at the same time in being able to keep track of and find which comment you actually are replying to.

Worse, in preview stage, I have no thread at all to refer back to if I want to make revisions.

Also, I note that right above the comment box are the pair of links:

You’re replying to Neil_Stevens’s comment (Don’t post as reply?). If I click on “Neil Stevens’s comment”, I get an “Error 404″ message.

I know, I should have been testing this why RS3.0 was still in the beta testing.

Sorry, I just couldn’t get in the mood to play around.

  • Flagstaff

Made the same observations a couple of weeks ago. I, too, hope they can improve on this. I frequently go back and forth between my own comment and the one I’m replying to, for exact quotes, links, and contents.

The only solution I have right now is to open Redstate in two windows and flip-flop between the two.

It would be nice if the site could re-display the thread they had up before, asking for comments. Then we could observe upgrades as they happen. Heh! (^,^)

I know they’ll do what they can, as fast as they can. I don’t intend to complain for, oh, days at least!

Looks like the site is getting loaded with linkers right now. Getting slower.

  • rbdwiggins

some of our new users do not recognize the significance of such an important date in conservative history….

Please read this in its entirety:

    “A Time For Choosing”

Yes, it was broadcast in black-and-white, and the conservative principles put forth on that historic day remain black and white. There were no shades of gray.

  • Flagstaff

    Soo fr, anywy. (^:^)

  • peg_c

Partly from laziness I was still using both (and finding diff. stuff at each). This is much better.

Congrats on the anny and the new design!

  • Darin_H

I don’t mean to be a pain since I like the new site so far, but distinguishing new comments is really necessary. I can’t remember what comments I have already read, and wading through 200+ to find a few new comments isn’t going to be fun.

  • civil_truth

We now can discover which of our comments have been replied to.

Unfortunately, after the first time, the system doesn’t give us a way of identifying whether further new additions had been made, unless we can, on our own, keep track of the numbers of replies and figure out whether those numbers have changed.

  • Neil_Stevens

Competent help would get the feature in faster :-)

  • Flagstaff

perhaps a thread dedicated to our comments and suggestions (not just gripes) that is easily identified as such and is always at the top of the Recommended Diaries list.

We could avoid multiple identical “suggestions” that way. Combine it with Becker’s idea and everything is in one place.

See, we’re already enhancing the Redstate Job Security Plan.

  • Flagstaff

to do higher math at that time of day.

  • saul_anuzis

I love the new format…but more importantly, I/we appreciate all you do!!!

Thanks again standing up for what’s “right”.

  • Flagstaff

are self-explanatory, it would sure be nice if your “Help for Red Staters” were to start out with an explanation of how to use each of them.

Just fit it in sometime between breakfast and lunch tomorrow. (^:^)

  • Neil_Stevens

For example: you normally want to select the text then hit the button, rather than hit the button, type, and hit it again.

  • Raven

No credit for coining the phrase about 2 years ago? None?

Don’t mind me. I’m just the peanut gallery.

  • Raven

    But much as I liked RS1.0 to RS2.0, I still prefer 2.0 to 3.0.

WAY too many pastels on here. Its driving me crazy. Can we get some bold, solid colours in here? It’s supposed to be a Bold, Solid site for Republican and Conservative Activism, right?
And how do I work the profile and my sig line?
I can’t right-click on a “Reply To This” button and open my reply in a second window or tab anymore.
And if all the old content is still in the Archives, can we get a link to get into and search the Archives for what we’re looking for?

There’ll be more, this is just after a single day of nonactivity…

  • Raven

How long, exactly, does it take for a new comment to show? I still can’t see the comment I posted almost 10 minutes ago.

More importantly, when I hit the “View My Comment” button, I just get linked back to the top of the diary rather than to my comment. Same when I click to view my comment from my profile page…

  • Raven

I still only see 52 comments on this thread. I have left this page, left RS, closed FF, used a different browser, deleted history, and still see the same 52 comments I saw before I posted my last couple comments on this thread.

The upside is that I am not using my home computer.

  • Vegas_Rick

before a person logs in? Whe I opend the site this morning, I saw a post by Blackhedd. After I read it, I logged in to post a comment and the posting was gone from the front page. What’s up?

  • Joliphant

Is there some sort of listing of what is wiped and what isn’t ?

  • Neil_Stevens

Because people who aren’t logged in by defintion are not taking part in discussions, we cache for them a bit more in order to keep the site running.

  • Neil_Stevens

As I warn in the message that pops up after you post a comment, new comments won’t always show up right away :-)

  • Neil_Stevens

I’ve noticed that’s actually a bug in Firefox 3, that sometimes it doesn’t scroll down to an anchor.

  • Vegas_Rick

Now, when I log in I can’t see Mark’s review of the Sunday Talk shows, and the last comment is daveinfl being suprised by his wife last night. This was a Saturday comment.

It’s as if I’m getting a screen capture of an old front page , but only when I log in.

Let’s see what the front page looks like after I post this comment.

  • Neil_Stevens
  • Vegas_Rick

It seems only the front page is affected. If I click on a post, the Recent Comments, User Diaries, and Recommended diaries all appear to be current. If I refresh, or click on the Return to Front Page button, I get that old screen.

  • ilitigant

I have held off on traversing the new site until today. I logged in yesterday just to set the log in data. I have not wanted to say anything critical, so I won’t. Just a list of issues of importance to the developer.

Well, it won’t save my login data. Yes, I have cookies active, but it won’t accept or read or pay attention to them.
    It won’t show a profile.
It won’t let me edit a profile.
I don’t have any content I use to have and have linked to it extensively elsewhere, so those links are toast.

I have noticed that before the change the parent company’s HumanEvents site listed headlines from RedState now, RedState is reduced to a hidden link in a dropdown under ‘blogs’. Gang.. that is not how to get search engines to bother with it. But alas… importance seems to have been reduced in HE.

Most content I have posted here is not posted elsewhere but is linked, so if that is gone, so is the point.

Hopefully things will work. I’ll come back and check on it some other time.

  • rbdwiggins

Pej’s post is top of page, and the comment counters and recent comments are frozen in time. But only on the front page.

  • Flagstaff

taking a very long time to post.

  • Flagstaff

and Recent Activity don’t seem to be updating properly.

Items get dropped after already being posted there.

  • Raven

Now that I’m back home, but all I get is the list of image options: View images, copy image location, save image as…

    I am in FF2.0

  • bs

The caching is just horribly, horribly broken. I can click on one diary and see one list of “Recent Comments,” and if I go to a different page, the list of comments is completely different (a LOT older). If I go back to that other diary, then the comments are more recent again. Even the Refresh button on the browser doesn’t fix it. And since the Tracker isn’t working, it makes it impossible to tell who has posted what, when.

  • Flagstaff

As in, they appear and disappear, as you noticed. The posts themselves are eventually accessible.
