EDITOR OF REDSTATE

Allow me to take this moment and say . . .

Phil Gramm was and is right.

And the coverage of Phil Gramm’s statement and the reaction to it proves he is right.

I thought Obama was the only presidential candidate capable of thoughtlessly throwing one of his top advisers under the bus.

    I was mistaken.

This is a battle the GOP should welcome.

Sadly, Sen. McCain is proving himself to be economically illiterate and a coward.

Now, it looks as though Sen. McCain will have to pick Gov. Romney in order to have any economic credibility at all.

Sadly, Gramm made the statement almost on the same day when the Senator bluntly stated to Pittsburg Tribune that there was really a recession in America.

Gramm’s statement therefore runs counter to that of the Senator’s. Again, may I repeat that the winner of this election shall be the candidate with least mistakes and inconsistencies.

McCain’s mistake was rejecting ordinary supporters like Pastor Hagee earlier in the primaries.

Pastor Wright’s case is totally different from that of Pastor Hagee’s. The Senator is an Episcopalian and has never attended Hagee’s church (i.e., not regular member). There is no reason to believe that any of Hagee’s viewpoints would somehow affect McCain’s policies. If an ordinary criminal on the street who has never personally met McCain would like to vote for him, should the Senator ask the guy not to vote for him? Such move would be very illogical, right?

Economists always disagree on economic issues. That’s why they use the terms like “theory”, “hypothesis”, and “ceteris paribus”, among others. In fact, no economicst can truly claim that his/her opinion/analysis is precisely correct. There will always be “assumptions”, “risk” and “uncertainties”.

The Senator should have taken the higher road of commenting that “Gramm is entitled to his own opinions. Let him defend his own viewpoints/statements.”

    Finally,

I don’t think a lawyer like Obama (with non-Economics undergrad background) has a sufficient intellectual capacity to argue with a pure-blooded Economist like Gramm, particularly on market and economic issues.

    Lesson for the Old Mac:

Imitating any foolish actions of Barry won’t do you any good.

Because in a sense, Gramm hit the nail on the head, and I think many agree with him. And I agree with Rod–all McCain had to do was attribute the remarks to Gramm (multiple times to drive home the point–I know that’s a Dem tactic but it works) and then segue into a sympathetic statement of his own. I do think McCain connects with middle America, and I think he does it in a way Obama never will. So I think this was another blown opp and I really really hope somebody who understands the way media works is gonna work on McCain’s strategy with him.

Mr. Gramm should have known better. Sometimes it is better to keep one’s opinions to one’s self. We are in a war to win the election. As close as it will undoubtedly be, there is not much room for error. The GOP is adept enough at shooting themselves in the foot. There is no need for more of it.

Gramm has more than enough experience in politics to know that he must be very measured in every word he says, as the MSM will parse every word and use every word against us. It is no secret that they are in bed for The Obamessiah. He doesn’t need any help from our side in making their job easier.

AT this point, it is far more important to win the election than to win points on ideological correctness.

but you can’t tell them that…. Straight talk or no, it’s like telling a woman to calm down. She might need to, but you better not say it.

  • Rod_Patrick

Or you will be doomed like Mr. Gramm.

What about a nation of … forget it.

I will be banned if I write it.
