EDITOR OF REDSTATE

Note to all the users [updated and bumped]

Housekeeping

We suspected that the server would strain on the first couple of days. There’s nothing like real world testing. For those of you who have been around a few years, you’ll remember the 2.0 launch and the issues we had the first week. Nothing new, but we appreciate your patience.

Now, for the important stuff:

Tagging Names

Every user can freely tag their posts. (1) Please use first and last name when tagging a person. “Tony Snow” is acceptable, “Snow” is not. “John McCain” is acceptable. “McCain” is not.

Tagging States

In tagging posts, if you are writing about a state, please use either the postal abbreviation for the state or spell the full name of the state. For Congressional Districts, please use the standard syntax of XX-##. So, “Minnesota” is fine. “MN” is fine. “Minn.” is not fine. LIkewise “GA-01″ is fine, but “GA-1″ is not.

Why does it matter?

This matters because it will make site indexing a lot easier for you and us. For the person, it’s frustrating for half the site to be searching for Barack Obama while the other half are searching for Obama. With states, it will help organize the state sections a lot better. Likewise, it’ll make searching via Google a lot more efficient.

One more thing . . .

If you are only using one tag, but it is multiple words, please put those words in quotes. If you tag Kneel Before Zod without using “Kneel Before Zod” you will generate tags for Kneel, Before, and Zod separately. That doesn’t help anyone much.

Thanks.

Update

Getting in the master section index

If you want to have your posts included in the master index by section, look up at the sections in gray in the masthead. Just add one of those words to your tags, i.e. put “elections”, “media”, business”, “economy”, etc. in as a tag and your post will show up there.

Markdown

You can do some really cool stuff very easily in your formatting by mastering Markdown. Basically, add emphasis by putting an asterisk around a word and bold by putting two asterisks around a word. You can learn more here.

All things considered it’s been a pretty darn good first day, and I know you and Neil, et. al., have been sweating the details behind the scenes. I also understand that my button has been given early retirement — oh well, that was my 15 minutes.

I completely understand why, and I told Neil not to think twice about it. Heck, I won’t even kowalski myself about it. :)

Nice work, folks. Let’s get out there and beat some Donks!

This launch has been pretty smooth on our end.

For the curious, a rundown of the day: We started out reasonable. Not great, but reasonable.

Then we noticed a bug. The Kowalski and Recommend buttons were acting kooky. Turns out, our caching was interacting poorly with those features.

So, we took quick action, and disabled caching for logged in users reading diary entries.

Then the site went down in flames due to the extra load.

So, we went in, removed the Kowalski buttons (sadly), moved the Recommend button to its own page, and fixed the My Diary and My Profile links not to contain your username in them so that they will always work.

What this means is that for now, new comment tracking is going to be tricky.

But the expert guys in Eagle will be doing more work later. Over time we’re just going to optimize this thing.

Thank you for your continuing patience,

  • Fututor

Are the recommended links that were on the right hand side of the front page coming back? And is there going to be a comment button/link on each post?

I can just about do everything here now from my phone. Even the Youtube inserts work now.

Time to try with my main computer again. Was still getting the Trojan download attempt even with the switch to a patched DNS server. I suspect one of the downstream servers from one of the rotating ads is poisoned. Was having to run without Javascript to keep it from happening. At least AVG is recognizing it as a Trojan installer now. Wish me luck. :)

Actually, it means putting reference marks on your diary, so it can be placed in various search parameters and grouped together with like subject matter, eg the new state/local tagging function that will allow your diary to be found by others in with an interest in your local area if your diary subject is your local area.

    experiment.

    Thanks.

I was just getting ready to ask if the new format allowed for markdown. I’m trying to learn it so that I don’t have to use different languages on the different blogs.

  • Erick

I’ve become a huge fan of Markdown.

and I don’t remember it being a big problem when we were beta testing. Comments are disappearing for as much as a half hour. This isn’t just the issue where the Recent Comments and the Recent Activity aren’t in sync. They completely disappear. Not in the blog any more either. I will try to grab a screen cap for the next time it happens.

One example is that Achance has a comment to Labrat73 that goes something like Labrat73 how does it feel…

It’s not there anymore, but when I clicked on it last time it didn’t go to an actual comment. Just to the top of blackhedd’s column.

… is there a problem keeping the user logged in across sessions or is someone trying to tell me something :-)

I have to log in every time I access the site which didn’t happen with RS 2.0

  • pilgrim

It doesn’t show up. Is that what was breaking the server yesterday?

  • pilgrim

I don’t see my comments in comment threads. The diary I just posted shows up in Recent Activity, but not in the “User diaries” sidebar. Either there is some ultra-bizarre caching behavior going on, or my stuff is just disappearing into the ether.

I appreciate all the work that’s gone in thus far, but I feel like the usability isn’t to the point where it needs to be yet. I am really unable to navigate, except to read the main diaries. Reading the comments, other than on a hit-and-miss basis is really difficult, at best.

  • bs

I guess I just had to gripe about it. I wonder if the posts are getting bottled up somehow and the floodgate just opened…?

  • azusa

I had to create a whole new account just to get back on.

  • Erick

Now that we’re at full steam we’re starting to see some server errors crop up and caching is fluctuating. We’re working on it.

  • pilgrim

I am not so sure this time who posted this. It may have been JSteele, but it was not me.
