Georgia Primary Predictions

Low turnout.

Less than a third of Georgia’s registered voters are expected to go to the polls Tuesday for a primary election dominated by local races and a relatively low-profile statewide Democratic contest for the U.S. Senate.

“I think turnout will be driven largely by local races,” said Secretary of State Karen Handel, who projected turnout at about 30 percent.

Polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. as voters choose everything from state lawmakers to local sheriffs to members of Congress.

Handel said some counties could beat her projection, depending on local offices or specific issues being decided.

Also, I suspect that Jim Martin will win the Democratic Senate race tomorrow, but go into a runoff. I don’t know whether it will be with Vernon Jones a/k/a Snuggles or Rand Knight, but I’m suspecting it will be with Snuggles.

n Alabama, meanwhile, state Rep. Jay Love of Montgomery and Huntsville insurance executive Wayne Parker took early leads in Republican runoffs for two open U.S. House seats.

In the 2nd Congressional District runoff in southeast and central Alabama, Love was leading state Sen. Harri Anne Smith of Slocumb by 56 percent to 44 percent, with 18 percent of precincts counted Tuesday night.

In north Alabama’s 5th Congressional District race, Parker had 80 percent to 20 percent for Huntsville lawyer Cheryl Baswell Guthrie, with about 17 percent of precincts reporting.

I have been trying how to figure out how to start a thread. I must be dumb cause I still can’t do it. Oh well!

In northeast Georgia, Republican U.S. Rep. Paul Broun held an early lead over rival state Rep. Barry Fleming in the 10th congressional district. With 31 percent of precincts reporting Broun, an Athens physician, had 73 percent of the vote while Fleming lagged with 27 percent, according to unofficial returns.

Democratic U.S. Rep. John Barrow was easily leading state Sen. Regina Thomas in the 12th congressional district in eastern Georgia. Barrow, who had the support of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, was leading with 80 percent of the vote to Thomas’ 20 percent, with about 20 percent of precincts reporting.
