There you go ladies and gentlemen. Barack Obama has let loose with where he actually stands — that is directly against you, the American people.
You can listen to Rush talking about it here. He rightly draws the connection to Jimmy Carter’s policies.
Next, I suppose, Obama will advocate the maximum speed limit be 55 mph again.
First, let’s point out that he’s full of it on this. This is one of those statements that is not true, when you look into it, but the Washington Post will never devote a front page story to debunking Obama on something like this.
Second, what Barack Obama precisely fails to mention is anything having to do with lowering the price of a gallon of gasoline.
Consider Barack Obama’s own ad, the transcript of which is here.
Barack Obama thinks high gas prices deserve serious answers, and a serious plan: Crack down on oil speculators, raise mileage standards and fast track alternative fuels.
These are not the answers of serious men.
We already know cracking down on oil speculators will have a de minimis impact on the price of oil. Why? Because they’ll go overseas and play in the exact same market.
Raising mileage standards will take a long time to deploy and does nothing to increase supply.
Fast tracking alternative fuels? Like ethanol? We’re already artificially keeping that price high through import tariffs Obama does not want to reduce. And how the hell are else are we suppose to fill up our cars?
Seriously, and this is the central point of contention you cannot ignore Barack Obama offers exactly nothing to deal with the high price of gas by the gallon. Unless he advocates the federal government buying every American a brand new car that can accept his alternative fuels, he offers no relief.
Inflating your tires and getting a regular tune-up sounds more like Obama’s plan for ego maintenance than it does for helping American families.

Efficiency
Super_G Thursday, July 31st at 2:23PM EDT (link)Second, what Barack Obama precisely fails to mention is anything having to do with lowering the price of a gallon of gasoline.
Who cares what the cost of gas per gallon is? All that matters is cost per mile. And increasing fuel efficiency is a heck of a lot easier than drilling for more oil.
Personally, I don’t care if my car gets 20 mpg and gas costs $2/gallon or my car gets 50 mpg and gas costs $5/gallon, as long as I can drive 100 miles for $10.
You are not typical
Erick Erickson Thursday, July 31st at 2:26PM EDT (link)Most people really care about it. In fact, I’d venture to say, the majority of people care about it.

Actually Erick, he is typical
Brian Simpson Thursday, July 31st at 2:37PM EDT (link)Typical “screw the poor” lefy.
His statements show an absolute misunderstanding of the issue. Changing efficiency standards only helps when the old cars are replaced by new cars. If all we do is focus on efficiency (and ignore the cost of the gas to fill the tank) we will ultimately hurt the poor and lower middle class since they are the ones that are the least able to afford new, more efficient vehicles to offset the price of gas.

Wife - I was listening to Obama today and he says if we just put more air in our tires we won’t need to ever import any oil ever again
Husband - Huh?
Wife - Oh, and you need to do a tune up on my car, too, that’s the other part.
Husband - Oooookaaay. Did Obama happen to say just exactly I was supposed to do to your car then? I mean, it’s 3 years old and has 20,000 miles on it. The sparkplugs are supposed to last 100,000 miles and the fuel injectors 50,000. Everything else is controlled by a computer.
Wife - You better call the Ford dealership then because we need to do both
Husband - Right, I’ll go add some air to your tires and then I’ll call Ford from the office tomorrow.
Also guarenteed is that the husband went out to the garage, turned on the compressor, squirted the hose a little, then came back inside. Today at work, he never lifted the phone up but will tell his wife that he’ll take the car in this evening because Ford can do the tuneup in a half hour. He then takes a leasurely drive…

Here’s how you might try it: In my opinion, oil prices will fall as soon as the American government makes a commitment to expand domestic production. Just two weeks ago, President Bush evacuated the Executive Order prohibiting off-shore drilling, that, along with polls showing the 70% of Americans who support expanded domestic production, has already caused the price of oil to drop by over $20 per barrel.
See, just a little factual evidence. You may argue with my conclusions, but at least I have something to back up my opinion. What evidence to you have, other than Nancy and Harry’s proclamations, that increased production won’t lower prices?
Hmmmm?

causation vs. correlation
Super_G Thursday, July 31st at 5:38PM EDT (link)Your example is no more factual than my contention that the drop in crude oil prices is a consequence of demand destruction due to high prices and the recession. Check out the recent VMT numbers for example.
The problem with commodities prices is that it is impossible to prove causation, only correlation.
The future is now
hoagy Thursday, July 31st at 5:39PM EDT (link)I totally agree. The problem isn’t that the world consumes a dynamic amount of oil, or that the US dollar doesn’t buy as much as it used to. The problem is simply that the price per gallon is too darned high! And we all know from economics class that when supply keeps up with demand, more supply means I can drive to the Nascar race in my RV again.
Why should we be thinking of the oil-strapped future when we could speed up the process by burning more oil now?
I mean we were never warned that the price of oil could go up! How could I have known that my Hummer wouldn’t make financial sense one day?

Seriously, there is no question Obama is arrogant. Have any of you actually inflated your tires and checked his claim? I suggest that we run an experiment and have all those posters here inflate as recommended and report their results. Let’s call the bluff and do a bit of field research.
On the other hand, have any of you ever brought an off-shore well in? I have. And it takes 3-5 years to yield if you hit. That won’t help your Hummer, Charlie.
Frankly, both candidates come up goose eggs on how to come up with a short term drop in oil pricing. Don’t drive on Sunday, except for medical and family emergencies. That one day of deferred road usage will play havoc with the futures, which are set by anticipated consumption levels. Yes, productivity and consumption will be hit, which in turn will also drive the pricing spot market down.

The recommendation to keep tires properly inflated is the same as that from the Energy Department and Environmental Protection Agency.

NASCAR has told fans, “With escalating fuel prices, the time is now for drivers to focus on simple things like proper tire pressure to maximize tire performance and increase fuel economy.”
Obama’s speech recommended to voters in Missouri that there are things individuals can do to help conserve energy, including bringing their cars in for regular tune ups, and keeping their tires properly inflated. It seems good advice to me - or perhaps you prefer coastal drilling which MIGHT recover more oil in 10 years

Achance Monday, August 4th at 11:25AM EDT (link)It has hardly been explored. Likewise, NPRA and the Alaskan OCS have hardly been explored. We do know that there are commercially viable oil reserves in Section 1002 of ANWR that need only the wells and a short link to the TAPS to brought into production.
That said, I’m with the Greenies on this one; I like the high oil prices. We gave Prudhoe Bay oil away and financed a two decade boom in the Lower 48. I’m into multi-billion dollar budget surpluses, a Permanent Fund Dividend over $2K this year, and a direct subsidy for fuel costs so we don’t have to pay the high prices you are paying.

spainishirish Monday, August 4th at 11:26AM EDT (link)and compose a diary with this same thought, I’ll recommend it and ask the Directors to put it on the front page. It is refreshing to have Obama supporters admit their desire to maintain high fuel costs.
Nice work, spainishirish

Freedom gone amok?
Brian Hibbert Monday, August 4th at 11:28AM EDT (link)Thank you. You just summarized your beliefs. Freedom isn’t acceptable if people don’t choose to behave in a manner consistent with YOUR beliefs. Good for you. Will you also use the power of the government to force people to attend your church? Or even better, to prevent others from attending churches which have beliefs that conflict with yours?
People like you lead to totalitarianism.
Socialism doesn’t work. It looks nice on paper, but it’s been tried and it’s failed miserably every time (usually accompanied by widespread death and suffering).

After six months, then what? What's your answer?
Cheetah772 Monday, August 4th at 11:30AM EDT (link)Opening strategic reserves doesn’t really solve anything. No, a better way is to expand offshore drilling and continuing the development of alternate fuels.

It's Always interesting
ehosterman Monday, August 4th at 11:41AM EDT (link)to see the anti-drilling crowd only bring up the reserves of ANWR or the OCS whwnever drilling comes up. Note that they carfully omit the reserves available from ANWR, OCS oil and Shale oil production (which is also proscribed by congressional fiat). Of course, that wouldn’t fit the script, since shale oil reserves would provide all of our oil needs for over 100 years, and we haven’t even discussed coal gassification. It’s real plain that the Democratic plan is to do or say anything to decrease fossil fuel use, even if it ruins the economy so they can “save the planet”.
Directors/Mods, may I make a request?
E Pluribus Unum Monday, August 4th at 11:44AM EDT (link)The G-D word is, to me, the most offensive term on the planet. This little crap-burger, inside 45 minutes, has treated RedState like his toilet, and has insulted me enough that I would like to go meet him face to face to discuss manners.
Could you ban it, this crap-burger?
Right now?

Here ya go, airheads...
johnnyrussia Tuesday, August 5th at 8:01AM EDT (link)Obama was observing that coastal drilling would save us so little oil and so little money even twenty years from now, that you can actually save more money immediately by doing “simple things” such as keeping your tires properly inflated.
Where did he get that crazy idea? From George Bush’s Energy Department and Environmental Protection Agency…. Their joint site fueleconomy.gov is loaded with fuel-saving, money-saving tips. Keep your tires properly inflated, for example, and you can save up to 12 cents a gallon.
Compare that immediate savings from that single tip, with what coastal and Arctic National Wildlife Refuge drilling combined would get you two decades from now: 6 cents a gallon.
And that’s being generous, because Bush’s Energy Department says we can’t expect any impact on prices from coastal drilling until the year 2030.
In their knee-jerk mockery, conservatives are flying closer to the truth then they intend to.
Update: A friend reminds me that California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) also recently “appealed to those with the real power to make change — average citizens — to drive slower, keep engines tuned and tires properly inflated, to buy hybrids and lower overall consumption.”
Second Update: Florida Gov. Charlie Crist also believes keeping tires inflated is important.
Third Update: Not too long ago, NASCAR told fans, “With escalating fuel prices, the time is now for drivers to focus on simple things like proper tire pressure to maximize tire performance and increase fuel economy.”
Man, but do they hate being on the wrong side of this one.
