While Heath Shuler is not in Washington helping the voters of North Carolina, he did have time to help himself.
TVA has approved a water-access deal for a development group whose investors include U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler, D-N.C., who sits on a committee that exercises oversight of the federal utility.
Shuler goes back home and says he is fighting for lower gas prices and energy independence. Meanwhile, he is nowhere to be seen in Congress actually doing that. But he does have time to line his own pockets.
Nice.

What Is The Status of Shuler's GOP Opponent?
IJB Thursday, August 14th at 10:49AM EST (link)Last I heard, he pulled out of the race.
If true, there’s really no point on publicizing him now – we need to focus on targets that can actually be beaten this year.
Isn't he the blue dog
bk (Diary) Thursday, August 14th at 10:57AM EST (link)who was sooooo conservative that before he got elected claimed he might not vote for Nancy Pelosi as Speaker? Then again, an ACU rating of 44 IS considered pretty far right for a Dem.
Shuler's opponent has big problems...
Jeffrey Malbis (malbis) (Diary) Thursday, August 14th at 1:16PM EST (link)…but the revelation of this situation might help him.
Carl Mumpower is back in the race. He pulled out citing principle–his belief that the GOP had lost its way. He said that he would get back in if enough county Republican parties came out in favor of basic conservative principles, and they did.
However, he is running with almost no money in his war chest. After seeing that this comment was running absurdly long, I wrote the situation up quickly in a Diary entry so check that out for more on Mumpower.
The seat Shuler holds had been in GOP hands for a long time, and still would be had it not been for an incredibly incompetent incumbent gaff. It has been rated safe for the Dems in this election…but that might have changed now.
