Remember back in 2004 when George Bush trounced John Kerry in the debates? The left saw a funny shape under Bush’s jacket and immediately decided Bush must have had answered piped to an earpiece from Karl Rove. That was the only way he could have done so well. [Leon points out that this is actually the one debate where Bush flopped. Oh well, the more things change . . . ]
A variation on that happened over the weekend. Andrea Mitchell and NBC are in full cover mode for the Obama campaign to undo Obama’s self-inflicted damage. Hours after bloggers at DailyKos suggested McCain did so well because he had advanced knowledge of the questions, Andrea Mitchell and NBC picked up the story. This time, the story did not come from the Kos Kids. It came from the Obama campaign.
Mitchell reported:
what they’re putting out privately is that McCain may not have been in the cone of silence and may have had some ability to overhear what the questions were to Obama.
She added that McCain “seemed so well prepared.” Well, duh. When you answer the question “when does life begin” with “at conception” as opposed to “that’s above my pay grade,” you will seem a bit more prepared.
For it’s part, the McCain camp is now protesting Mitchell’s coverage as lacking objectivity. Mitchell did pass on the claim without anything more than amazement at how well prepared McCain seemed.
Let’s not forget that Mitchell also, uncritically, passed on the Obama rumor that McCain sabotaged Obama’s trip to see the troops in Germany.
It’s not just Andrea Mithcell though.
The media is in full cover mode to help out Barack Obama over his performance at Saddleback. The New York Times too is pushing the “McCain knew the questions” story. It is the only way they can explain how well McCain did and how poorly Obama did.
Here, though, ladies and gentlemen, is an alternate theory.
McCain did well because he understands the issues close to the hearts of the people at Saddleback. Obama did poorly because he does not understand those issues and only built up the “I’m a man of faith” narrative to hide that fact.
The media, unchurched as it is, cannot relate. They see Obama and hear his powerful rhetoric and they equate powerful rhetoric with church. They see Obama attending Trinity Church and equate that with actually being churched.
Friends, in this day and age, there is generally a big difference between those in the secular world who call themselves Christians and those who actually follow Christ.
Obama may call himself a Christian, but his inability to relate at Saddleback is another indicator that he is not actually a follower of Christ. It is an unpleasant truth that we need to get used to. The media is incapable of processing that data point. The only way they can get around it is to presume that McCain lied, not that the Obama narrative is a lie.
Maybe the media should stop treating Obama’s talking points as gospel.

Losers often claim cheating, yes?
MaggieD Monday, August 18th at 10:15AM EDT (link)I don’t understand what difference it would make anyway. McCain said what he thought. I’m QUITE sure Obama’s comments wouldn’t have influenced him in the LEAST. I’ve gone from, “I’m voting for McCain because he’s the lesser of two evils,” to really believing he’s the best man for the job. YAY, Saddleback!!
McCain Should Be Fuming

Jeff Monday, August 18th at 10:25AM EDT (link)Someone needs to post a side-by-side set of videos from the Saddleback interviews. One video for each question with both Obama’s and Senator McCain’s answers.
This should be made available on YouTube and anywhere else. Or at least provide a side-by-side transcript of the answers.
I don't think the problem is that...
Commodore Perry Monday, August 18th at 10:26AM EDT (link)…Obama doesn’t follow Christ, although I certainly understand the importance of that in the Saddleback forum. I think the problem is that Obama seems generally unconvicted of any particular faith, as is pointed at in the subtitle.
I am Jewish but I definitely care that our President has an absolute faith that is unshakeable, one that produces things like quick answers of “at conception” with no hesitation. To me, such faith shows the kind of character and conviction, the kind that spills over into other arenas, that is necessary for such a major leader. In addition, as a student of history, it would be assinine to not accept the seriously positive role that faith has had in shaping the United States as the best country in the world in such a short time.
In my opinion, the thing to focus on is not whether Obama is a Christian or a follower of Christ (of which I do understand the difference) but whether Obama actually has solid convictions instead of wavering theories. If he has not seriously pondered the age-old of question of God to a conclusion, with what political situations might he never find any real answers? As John McCain so often asks: Is he ready to lead?

Erick Erickson Monday, August 18th at 10:33AM EDT (link)We make the same point in two different ways.
Obama has played up that he is a Christian. He has played up that he is a regular church goer. Until it became inconvenient, he played up his relationship with his pastor.
And the media bought it. They proclaimed him a new type of Democrat, comfortable with his faith and able to talk about it.
Except that he is not.
Who will stand on either hand and keep this bridge with me?
Yes
Commodore Perry Monday, August 18th at 10:39AM EDT (link)Not the least of reasons why they played up his faith was because it was in many ways a preemptory defense on claims that he was a Muslim. Now Obama has much more of a faith problem on his hands than such claims, as the current situation is much more damning.

WRT Obama's answer on what being a Christian is....
Attack Mode Monday, August 18th at 10:55AM EDT (link)…He went into one of his long drawn out answers about who Christ is and all that…I assume he was trying to show off his knowledge of the Gospel. Unfortunately in doing so he left out a key component. He never mentioned, maybe purposefully avoided, the notion that Jesus is God. I mean how can you speak about what Jesus means to you without ever mentioning the divinity of Christ.
I only know of one religion that acknowledges Christ as a man but doesn’t acknowledge the divinity of Christ and that is Islam. I am not inferring that Obama is Muslim but for someone who has had issues with this rumor, I would think he would have made a point to acknowledge the divinity of Christ in that answer.
I believe Obama has a fundamental misunderstanding of the Gospel and the overall Christian faith. This could be because of his upbringing or just a stage in his spiritual walk…either way I think he blew it this weekend and left the viewers with more questions to ask. Not a good thing to have going on with less than 3 months left to go to election day.

I won’t go into theological debate with you, but I honestly want you to be aware this is partially not true. Islam is not the only religion that refuses to acknowledge the divinity of Christ as the Son of God. What about Gnosticism? Jehovah’s Witness? Mormonism?

I do, however, think you cannot be fundamentally as far left as Obama is and actually be a real follower of Christ.
As the song goes, they’ll know that we are Christians by our love. Tell that to the kids Obama was happy to toss in the trash can.

With all due respect, Erick, I think you cross a line here
TheSophist Monday, August 18th at 11:53AM EDT (link)This crosses a line, Erick, and it is one that ought not to be crossed.
Who are you to decide whether someone is or is not a follower of Christ? It is precisely this sort of self-righteousness that turns so many people off to the evangelical community in the first place.
The unpleasant truth is that whether Obama is or is not a follower of Christ is between him and Christ. You can disagree with his interpretation of what it means to be a follower of Christ, but that remains your personal point of view, and your personal view alone. And that is a far cry from calling someone “non-Christian”. As if God gave you (or me, or anyone else) that power?
It is sufficient to say you (or evangelicals, or most Christians) disagree with how Obama’s faith seems to impact his personal behavior, or his policies. It is enough to describe his actions and words as not making sense to YOUR worldview and religious beliefs. Don’t cross the line into classifying that which you cannot classify.
A measure of humility in terms of describing what is intensely personal to each and every one of us might do all of us some good.

CincoSolas_del_Bronx Monday, August 18th at 12:08PM EDT (link)Something like this:
My friends, I know there has been some concern that I was not completely within the Cone of Silence last Saturday evening. I am now compelled to acknowledge that I have not been forthcoming about an aspect of my life which only a few have known about until now.
You see, last Saturday was not the first time in my life that I have sat in the Cone of Silence, cut off from all contact with the outside world. During my first visit to that Cone, I had time to learn how to understand and interpret the thoughts of both my friends and my foes.
I humbly apologize for wrongly assuming that my esteemed opponent, Senator Obama, was aware that I had this ability and would make full use of it.

Bambi comes to us courtesy of the Chicago corruption machine. His arrivals into both the Illinois Senate and the United States Senate were tainted, to put it mildly, by electoral shenanigans.
His votes and stated policies are decidedly, sharply antithetical to Christianity. His claim to church devotion is to a manifestly racist and hate-filled sect. He lies shamelessly and often on the campaign trail.
Then he wraps the “I’m a Christian” mantle around himself. He might profess Christ, and might indeed be a heaven-bound believer. But if there is any extant evidence that he is a follower of Christ, a disciple, I am unaware of it, while I am aware of a great deal of evidence to the contrary.
I strongly doubt that he operates his life with even the merest nod toward faith in Christ, and like Erick, I operate in a medium in which I can express that view plainly.
And if the Treason Media and the rest of the Dems don’t like hearing that, perhaps they should get that Unfairness Doctrine passed into law as soon as possible.

Rod_Patrick Monday, August 18th at 1:59PM EDT (link)Yes, I agree that’s BO is still the leading candidate and McCain is the underdog in this race.
Like Cavic of Serbia, Despite Obambi’s edge, he has to prove yet so many things to fully erase the doubts of the independents. He has to answer so many questions. And everytime he answers, more questions rise in the midst of any issue. And I doubt whether he can truly remove the suscipions, which are growing whenever he opens his mouth. The proof of this is BO’s lack of ORIGINAL PLATFORM AND LIFE STORY (which is still aphrochrypal to many of the voters).
On the other hand, McCain only has to continue (maybe sharpen) his policy statements and present himself as the Candidate of Reforms…. stay focused and maybe “some last big kick/push” as November’s closing in (like Phelps in the finish line).

I don't actually disagree with you
TheSophist Monday, August 18th at 2:06PM EDT (link)on the substance of your criticism of Obama.
I’m merely taking issue with the “thou art no Christian” thing. Quoting John 3:16 doesn’t make you a Christian, fine; but really, nothing “makes you a Christian” except what is between you and Christ. Your understanding of Christ is no more privileged than mine or Rick Warren’s or McCain’s or Obama’s.
You say that you are surrounded every day on Sunday with people who have no relationship with Christ. Well, all I’m saying is that unless you are Christ, you really don’t know, do you?
Look, I don’t know if Obama is genuinely Christian or not. But that isn’t the issue. I don’t care. What matters to me is that if he is genuine about his faith, then he has a strange way of showing it amongst other believers. He has a strange set of ideas that don’t cohere with mine. I will make human judgments on Obama as a human being, as a potential leader. Going beyond that into his relationship with who he professes to be his redeemer is, to borrow a phrase, “above my pay grade”.
That’s all. It’s like an old pastor of mine once said to me, “Do not presume to speak for God.”

Come to think of it,
blooch Monday, August 18th at 4:17PM EDT (link)Is there still such a thing as Happy Hour? I thought MADD got that abolished. I’ve been out of circulation for a while.
As I recall, it wasn’t Happy Hour that caused barfights. It was Mean Drunk Hour, which immediately followed:D

What grabs My attention
Raven Monday, August 18th at 4:38PM EDT (link)Is the outright admission of loss, of FAILURE, at the Saddleback debate by Obama.
When was the last time you ever saw a politician claim defeat at a debate? Isn’t it always, “Well, we won on this topic…” or “We won because…”? Where is the positive spin?
“We lost because he cheated.”
All I see is “We (Obama) lost.”
Which translates to “Obama failed. Obama is 2nd best.”

Can we call it a "happy hour"?

Jesus did say (paraphrased) that we will know them by their fruits
tcgeol Monday, August 18th at 5:25PM EDT (link)Obama doesn’t show any. I can’t say for sure whether or not he is a Christian any more than I can say you are or not or whether Erick is or not. Maybe he truly does trust Christ, but I have to doubt it. But I can say that while Erick has shown fruit in his writings here, nothing in Obama’s life indicates that.
I’m not saying he isn’t a Christian, just that I see no evidence of it, and that evidence should be there. Its one thing to say that you don’t believe that someone is a Christian from their words and actions - that is legitimate. It is a different matter to dogmatically say that someone is not a Christian. There you take perogative that belongs to God alone. On the other hand, there are certain doctrinal issues that can’t be debated. If those are rejected, then I would dogmatically say that that person is not a Christian.

On my way back from dinner with my dad last night...
CSUFBomb Monday, August 18th at 5:54PM EDT (link)…he asked if we could swing by the post office so he could mail a letter. I pulled up and he handed me a letter, addressed to McCain, to drop in the mailbox.
My father is in his 70s and was perhaps McCain’s least enthusiastic supporter. As recentl;y as last week he told me he would vote for McCain, but wouldn’t support him in any other way. However, he was so impressed by McCain’s responses at Saddleback that he wrote a check.

Flagstaff Monday, August 18th at 6:26PM EDT (link)I meant to say “And now that’s what Andrea Mitchell has put out publicly.“
It doesn’t make any sense the other way.
Since I had to add this, I might as well vent a bit more. What Mitchell did was the opposite of “journalism.” She took a slanderous claim and gave it a patina of credibility by repeating it in a “news” forum. Adding injury to that insult, she spread the baseless rumor around the world. The only saving grace is that she did attribute it to the Obama staff.
Yet, it’s being repeated again and again as if it were true, which is exactly what the Obama camp wanted. The story today isn’t that Obama fell on his face, but that McCain cheated.
And remember the ‘$5 million makes you rich–I know that number will be twisted’ comment?
It took Obama only two days to make the prediction come true.

bs Monday, August 18th at 8:24PM EDT (link)That’s the jist of it, right there. We can draw conclusions about one’s spiritual standing based on the fruits they produce. If a “Christian” is not producing fruits of the Spirit, they probably don’t possess the Spirit.

Another Open Letter to Rick Warren
Noel Monday, August 18th at 8:41PM EDT (link)I Was Wrong…
AND RICK WARREN WAS RIGHT!
When I first heard about the Saddleback event, I was concerned that it would elevate an undeserving Obama while allowing the candidates to dodge the tough questions. Upon further consideration, I needn’t have been concerned.
Warren was right to invite them both. And it was enough to just let them talk, even though, because of time, there were no follow-ups; McCain got away with saying he opposed his party on torture, even though the debate was whether preventing another attack by scaring the hell out of a terrorist with waterboarding constitutes “torture” in the first place. And Obama got away with many things, such as claiming he’d support merit pay, which the unions will never allow him to do.
Still, Pastor Warren’s format had a simple but brilliant integrity; by asking the exact same questions to both candidates, Warren not only provided apples-to-apples comparisons for undecided voters, he exposed the Lop-Sided Media for the frauds they’ve become. A balanced press wouldn’t toss softballs to their favorite, while slinging hardballs at Republicans. The My-Left-Foot, Thigh, Calf, Ankle, Hip and Pinky-Media was the real loser.
But not the only one. McCain wiped the floor with Teleprompter Man. Period. It still doesn’t mean Maverick is the greatest conservative ever–sadly, he’s not. But, man, is that floor shiny!
And for the record, your Honor, Barack Obama isn’t qualified to carry Clarence Thomas’ jock strap. In fact, he’s not qualified to carry the jock strap of the accountant who does the books for the auto mechanic who fixes the car of the guy who delivers Chinese take-out to Clarence Thomas’ house.
But Andrew Sullivan is.

TheSophist Tuesday, August 19th at 10:09AM EDT (link)Agreed with your post.
Incidentally, I remember there are seven orthodoxies that if you deny, you are not really a Christian. All the sects and denominations of Christianity subscribe to all seven of these core beliefs. It was a long time ago in confirmation class — anyone know them off the top of his/her head?
The few I sorta remember…
Divinity of Christ
Resurrection
The Trinity
Time for me to do some homework, it seems.
