EDITOR OF REDSTATE

Hillary Clinton Open Thread

Hillary speaks at the DNCIt’s night two. Mark Warner may have the keynote, but the networks aren’t covering it much. They are salivating for Hillary’s speech — particularly in light of Bill dissing Barack Obama today.

Have at it.

UPDATE: The DNC moved the keynote speech from Mark Warner up because Warner would not attack John McCain. What’s this? Politics as usual at the convention?

UPDATE: She’s here. I just don’t think the Obama camp really vetted this Hillary video. It’s just going to remind the PUMAs why they supported her.

Geez, who told her orange was a good idea? UPDATE My wife informs me that orange is across the color wheel from blue. Therefore, it’s a woman thang that works.

UPDATE: Wow. Michelle Obama just had a “die itchbay” look on her face. Holy cow!

One minute in and Hillary has not asked for help paying off the campaign debt. She also went through the litany of being a proud X, Y, and Z. “Wife of Bill” was not in the litany.

“No way, no how, no McCain.” Clever. No wonder she lost the primary.

Story of the night: MICHELLE OBAMA CANNOT HIDE HER CONTEMPT OF HILLARY. If looks could kill . . .

Well, Hillary is giving more of a substantive speech than anyone else so far. Advocates women’s right and gay rights. Subtly promotes expanded immigration.

Michelle Obama still wants to kill her.

Could she have mentioned Barack Obama any less? Geez. She’s mentioned McCain maybe twice. I think she’s only mentioned Obama four or five times.

This really is not a well delivered speech. But she’s boosting the number of references of Obama.

Hillary just reminded people of the Clinton years. Clinton sits back and beams ear to ear. The crowd goes nuts. Michelle Obama scowls.

“He’ll end the war” and “he’ll have a terrific partner in Michelle Obama.” Michelle visibly must remind herself to smile. Whoa. She really hates Hillary.

Could the applause for Joe Biden in Hillary’s speech have been any less enthusiastic?

It’s 11:04 p.m. and Hillary is on the 19th amendment and the right of women to vote, thereby sending code to the PUMAs to keep fighting.

Hillary Translator Fight on women. Fight on. Ignore the whole “elect Barack” stuff. Fight on for your rights.

Hillary is fired up now. “In America there is no chasm to great . . . no ceiling too high” [except for women who are being shut out of the White House].

Geez. She threw in the essentials for Obama. She knocked McCain. But the speech was littered with so many references to glass ceilings and women’s rights, I find it hard to believe she is really committed to Obama. And Michelle looked like she could kill Hillary the entire time.

what did Michelle Obama say at the end? Her lips looked like “I hate that . . . .” Holy cow! (I kid. Her looks killed. Her lips didn’t move . . . much. It did look like she said “I hate” something)

There was no real praise for Barack Obama in that speech, btw. There was nothing in there. She did not praise him at all. It was pro forma rhetoric.

as our competition. I can think of a dozen tickets that would be stronger:

    Obama / Warner
    Obama / Bayh
    Obama / Hillary
    Hillary / Warner
    Hillary / Bayh
    Hillary / Biden

    or how about

    Warner / Bayh

We dodged a bullet this cycle.

Obama wants to be DNC’s Reagan… but he is way too pessimistic and his party has no vision for a positive future.

Blue + Orange, get it? So far this speech has been a lot of whining, a lot of random tangents about things, and she is just now getting to the point of endorsing Obama.

I don’t trust Hillrod. Not at all. What is she getting paid for this speech? Are they making her Majority Leader?

is a reference to the 100 years’ worth of ex-Confederate states voting for Democrats and their mostly anti-civil-rights policies.

From the end of Reconstruction until 1964, it was almost a guaratee that a pro-white Democrats would be elected in all Cotton Belt states.

The reference is not about current politics.

    She endorses Obama.

    She slams McCain.

    BUT…

She explains why she ran and what she wanted to accomplish.

Her speech was more about her than it was about supporting Obama.

She could have focused more on Obama.

Good speech for the Dems though.

I still think McCain should seriously contemplate a female VP… I like Palin, but would settle for Whitman.

Did you notice how scared Michelle Obama looked during Hillary’s entire speech? It was as if she just knew Hillary was going to shiv Barry at any time.

  • Illinicon

The “big” speeches of this convention (Michelle Obama, Warner, and HRC) have been in the 20 minute range. It is it me or should the featured speaker of a night be in the 30-45 minute range.

  • kandrew
    1. “We’re Americans, we’re not in the mood for quitting”

That’s funny considering that Barack Obama is the one who wants to surrender in Iraq.

    1. The accusation that McCain doesn’t want women to earn the same as men.

Wasn’t it just a few months ago when word got out of huge pay gaps between men and women in Obama’s office… not McCain’s.

    1. Chelsea Clinton

Yowza! What a shame she had to live out her awkward ugliness in the White House.

    1. The state of Democratic women.

I don’t want to seem like I’m a chauvanist, but save Chelsea Clinton it seems that all Democratic women are either batty, a fatty, or older than dirt.

  • mgmtoo

excellent speech — exciting and gripping, personal and visionary. Like Richard Nixon, Hillary is never better than when she has taken a punch. She will be around long after the Obamas have headed off to be the leader of Kenya or heading up some foundtion or whatever he does after his defeat (he will not stay in the Senate.)

Great speech. She occasionally remembers to mention Obama & Biden but this is the beginning of Hillary 2012.

As a Clinton supporter and probably the only Republican to support her I was somewhat disappointed with some aspects of her speech and just the reason behind why she had to support Obama and make nice.

After all Democratic party leaders did to her, and what the Obama camp said and still feels about her, her husband, and her supporters. I just wish she would have stuck it to him and the party for operating the primaries like American Idol instead of a substantive serious contest for a nominee. Although, PUMAS aren’t going to support Obama. No matter how “enthusiastic” Hillary was tonight.

What a painfully robotic speaker Hillary is, and the campy facial expressions, especially with her eyes, make it borderline nauseous.

I also saw M.O. visualizing daggers, she really needs to get the anger vibes under control or she’s going to cause more problems for Barry. I’m watching Fox right now, not a mention of M.O., it’ll be interesting to see if any MSM picks up on it, I thought it was totally obvious.

Bottom line, Hillary’s speech was totally forgettable, and I hate to say it but I bet we will see the master in action tomorrow night. That should be interesting.

    A lot of energy.

I think (hope) it creates buyer’s remorse.

While I thought the content was nonsense in a policy sense, I thought her portrayal of a woman who sought and barely lost nomination and the struggles of women was great.

Her goals were those that would be hard to argue with, except for the part where she infers that she could somehow force employers to extend hours.

In this experience she has managed to rise from a polarizing, reviled politician’s wife–who was ruthlessly ambitious into a moderate democrat who has crossover appeal. In the end, this may have been a blessing in disguise (for her) if Obama loses to McCain.

  • Shaggy_Dog

  • nivlem

Let’s see… her intro video was a joke.
It minimally shows her interaction helping people. It showcases her college
    and political degrees…that is it….

    I am sorry…as a child of the 60′s shes
is a terrible example. This was always
a given. We could get a degree….we can
marry the right person….we can break the ceiling….we choose not to….

She chose not to….she made all the decisions women make when they are god-fearing, loving women(I say that with trepidation), but she expects to be paid for it…

This is always the problem with Democrats…they have good intentions,
but then they get lost in self-importance..then they expect to be rewarded for their good intentions….

  • gclaghorn

She was really working that pantsuit…

  • paint_it_red

Let’s start with health care. Hillary Clinton tonight states “I look forward to Barack Obama passing health care that covers every American.” Cut to her prior clip during primary, “Barack Obama’s health care plan would fail to cover every American.” Cut to McCain’s $5000 tax credit for working families to maximize health care coverage in a market based approach maximizing consumer choice, fitting family budgets, and covering more Americans than ever before. This could be done in the first 10 seconds of a commercial.

Next, Hilary Clinton’s winning line “there are 18 million more cracks in that glass ceiling” and “we have launched 50 women into space and one day we will launch one into the White House” while showing McCain with his female veep, (I prefer Palin). This could be the next 5 seconds of the commercial.

Third, cut to Hillary Clinton’s line “we need diplomacy, not war” and her line about needing to bring the soldier home responsibly. Cut immediately to her primary season criticism of Obama’s withdrawal plan as irresponsible. Cut to Obama’s comments about invading Pakistan with special forces. This could be done in 10 seconds.

Last 5 seconds, replay the great clip, “John McCain would make a great President, and Barack Obama has a speech he gave in 2002.”

    Sorry… I am a woman businessowner from
the 60′s. Do you know how tired I am of

The only reason most of us are not President is because “we don’t want to be”….not because we don’t want to be.
Most women will not put themselves in that position. It is not a “glass
ceiling”…it is a choice. The woman made her choices….

    Was a tie between:

    1. the intro video segment where Former President of the United States of America Bill Clinton was labeled with the subtitle “Hillary’s Husband” as he spoke.

    2. the pause Clinton had after she said “I didn’t spend 35 years in the trenches . . .” where I found myself finally agreeing with something Hilary Clinton said, until she finished her sentence.

  • nod90

Glad we don’t have to face her in November.

  • Tim_Schieferecke

Hillary would have been much more formidable. Those idiots weren’t about to vote against Obama and now they are in real trouble.

I’ve seen recent polling showing RedState endorsed candidate Sean Parnell trailing Don Young lately.

  • dbecraft

We should be thankful that Obama is running instead of Hillary! he has such a horrible past that I can’t believe that anyone with TV or internet could vote for him. Of course, most of the voters have no clue about him or his agents that propelled him to this position. Yes, it is a bit scary, but politics is scary!

  • JTaylor

to lour that sour something must be really stuck….

    Okay…tactless I know…

Who has not decided on their candidate yet… not the liberals and not the conservatives. We already know who will get our vote. So what did Hillary do tonight for those undecides. You know the undecideds they are the people who tell you over and over again they vote for the candidate and not the party. They have no party and are not moved by the D or the R behind the name. They don’t look at policy, administrations, or principles. These are the people who don’t see a difference between the parties. These are the people who think all politicians are the same.

So what did Hillary give these people tonight as the reason to support Obama.. nothing, absolutely nothing but that Obama has a D after his name and McCain has an R.

The majority of these undecideds have are probably still undecided. Those who are still undecided are going to vote a candidates character and how comfortable they are with a candidate. Obama is an unknown and the only things to find out about him are not good.

  • Menlo

I hardly EVER watch television, but I caught a few minutes at the end on ABC, and it looked like Hillary’s eyes were about to fall out of her head. She almost looked zombie-like.

Meanwhile Chelsea looked like she was about to fall asleep.

I noticed Bill Clinton in tears. I think we know what those tears REALLY were.

The way Diane Sawyer and Charlie Gibson were fawning over this was nauseating.

  • Shaggy_DA

But when did Montana elect Tom Arnold as governor. Man alive was Barry coked up or what?

Get the crowd all riled up and then toss that video at ‘em. PUMA’s Unite!

  • septembergurl

My point was Hillary is formidable and a political force to be reckoned with. I don’t understand your comments about the child of the 60s and glass ceilings, I quote:

“I am sorry…as a child of the 60′s shes is a terrible example. This was always a given. We could get a degree….we can marry the right person….we can break the ceiling….we choose not to….

She chose not to….she made all the decisions women make when they are god-fearing, loving women(I say that with trepidation), but she expects to be paid for it.”

    huh? wha?

You know, I’m a woman but I have no clue what you’re talking about.

Clinton is not a woman, she’s a politician. Everything she does is calculated to put her in a good position for her next election. And I think she did a good job tonight.

God-fearing? Loving? Wha? You are confusing her with a woman.

Democrats are likely feeling a great deal of buyers’ remorse tonight. It was a great convention performance, way upstaging Michelle Obama last night. Hillary was electric, she had the partisan crowd in the palm of her hand… She was definitely self-serving. The words she said were bunk, but the conventioneers just lapped it all up. Most of them anyway… Michelle didn’t seem thrilled…

Bill’s up tomorrow… that should be even better.

  • bluesriffer

and still remain viable as a future candidate with Obama backers. It was probably the best speech she’s ever delivered. She had the audience in the palm of her hand, had a few laugh lines and a few catch phrases, kept it moving along well, and generally exceeded the expectations of most, but will disappoint the Obama team with her tepid praise.

Her mentions of him seemed perfunctory, almost afterthoughts, and the same “endorsements” could have been used for any Democratic nominee – Biden, Richardson, Edwards, or herself by someone else – very easily. She NEVER said she thought he was qualified, that she respected him, or that he would be a good President. Still, just enough so the Obama team will seem ungrateful and whiny if they mention their dissatisfaction.

Michelle looked quite unhappy most of the times the cameras found her. Of course, if she and Barry expected more enthusiasm from Hillary, they should have been more forthcoming in helping her retire her campaign debt. What goes around, comes around.
