Am I Making Too Much of ArcXIX?

ArcXIX is the Kos diarist who started all this stuff on the Palin family and the baby. ArcXIX has pushed the story that Sarah Palin’s youngest child is really Bristol Palin’s child.

If you go here, you will find a profile of a user at the 1up.com website.

If you follow the Google Cache, that was oddly changed on August 31, 2008, you will notice that the user’s AIM user ID is ArcXIX.

Is 24 year old Charles Hartley the diarist?

Is this the person who started all the trouble for the Palin family? And if so, is he connected to the Obama campaign? I think we should find out.

COMMENTS

  • cnd46

    No Erick,
I think you are making too little of a deal of it. If Mr. Obama wishes that his campaign staffers are going against his will, then I feel he needs to hear about it

  • Southpaw75

But now he can look like the innocent bystander by publicly denouncing that family members are off limits AFTER the damage is already done.

  • SteveLA

Why yes Erick, by all means we need to know all we can about young Master Charles Harley aka Arcixx.

It’s as Mr. Charles Dickens put it:

“The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens, dated 1837: ?I look upon you, sir, as a man who has placed himself beyond the pale of society, by his most audacious, disgraceful, and abominable public conduct?”

Into the light of day with young Mr. Charles Harley.

  • sayers

did this guy just completely make up a story and the media started running it as news? How did this get any credence?

The rumor actually surfaced in Alaska not long after Trig was born. From Byron York:

Here in St. Paul, I was on NPR this evening with a man named Michael Carey, who is a columnist and former editorial page editor for the Anchorage Daily News. We started talking, of course, about the day’s Palin news ? the fake baby story and the real baby story. As far as the fake baby story was concerned, Carey told me that the rumors were going around in Alaska a few months ago, not long after the birth of Sarah Palin’s fifth child. He told me that Daily News reporters and editors explored the story quite extensively, and, as Carey said on NPR, “could find no basis for it except that people who didn’t like Sarah Palin believed it.” He told me that Daily News reporters talked at length to the Palins about it ? Carey said the Palins were actually eager to talk about the rumor because they knew how much it had spread around Alaska. He also said Daily News reporters looked into the medical angle of the rumor, which included talking to at least one doctor involved, and again found nothing to support the story. In the end, Carey told me, the newspaper became “convinced that it was not true.”

What is amazing about all this is how making just one phone call to a man like Carey could have given some of the bloggers at The Atlantic and DailyKos pause before they wrote so extensively about it. Why didn’t they do that?

  • wiseprince

Um, Maybe it’s time to get Palin in front of the cameras? I don’t know about the rest of the media but CNN is going all out trying to define her as “dangerously inexperienced” for the VP slot.

This is odd, I don’t remember ANY questions about Obama’s readiness (except the ones that were posed by Hillary, Biden and the rest of the party). Nothing directly from the media.

  • bs

    Nicely done.

  • jimmuy8

And I dare say, we need to know about his family, his mother, his father, any children, past and present love interest–I think maybe everyone should know as much about him as he felt ought to be exposed about those he politically disagreed with.

    Chicago rules, yes?

  • Jack_Savage

I feel a new phrase coming on:

    “I call “Chicago Rules”!

    NICE.

  • Cheetah772

It only shows that Hartley contributed to both Clinton and Obama campaigns during the primary season. It says nothing about Hartley working for Obama campaign in any position, which would indicate that he has a connection to Obama campaign.

  • wiseprince

a lot of it from daily kos. Scary but true

  • TomOConnor

Is young Mr. Hartley supposed to be?

  • SteveLA

Some comments are quite frankly “Beyond the Pale”. I have no problem with a conflict between free speech and speech which is patiently offense and meant to be so. The later being “beyond the pale” and subject as part of just society being brought back within the bounds of acceptable conduct.

Young master Charles Hartley is clearly now “beyond the pale” and needs to understand that society does have limits to his free speech, or perhaps more accurately speech has consequences.

    that is all. :-)

I thought the diarist “Inky99″ started this. At least, that’s what I get from this profile.

Do you believe Inky99 and ArcXIX are the same person?

  • Augustine

ArcXIX’s diary entry deserve an unmasking. Even if the diarist doesn’t work for Obama I think it would be interesting to see who wrote it. Assuming it is Charles Hartley, I find it interesting that he didn’t provide his employer when he donated. Very interesting.

  • olderthangandalf

    site:dailykos.com arcxix columbus

These make it look like ArcXIX might indeed be located in Columbus, Ohio. Read the many comments and draw your own conclusions.

    “Charles Hartley” Columbus Ohio
The addresses and phone numbers that pop up may or may not have any relation to the DailyKos diarist, even if he is from Columbus, so be careful. All the same, if you are from Columbus and know one of these persons in either their work or personal iterations, some careful, legal, tasteful follow up might be worth thinking about. Just don’t go overboard, because if veers into anything remotely resembling harassment it could 1) backfire in a PR sense, and 2) lead to some litigation.

  • kevinforrester

I don’t think you’re making too much of ArcXIX. I’m very much in favor of people posting information online taking credit for their work. That’s why I’ve signed up on this site under my real name. Or is it my real name? Maybe I’M Charles Hartley, or ArcXIX. (I’m not. I’m just making a point. But how do you know?) If you google “Charles Hartley Obama” you’ll find that a person or persons claiming to be Charles Hartley contributed money to the Obama campaign. Unfortunately you are then no closer to knowing who actually posted lies online about the next Vice President of the United States than you are now. (And if you are, it’s because you know more about the quality of information posted online than I do.) In short, this and other serial online liars should be exposed and held to account. I am, however, uncertain of how you do that.

  • Strelnikov

I am watching her right now grill a McCain spokeslady about why the McCain campaign was “not more forthcoming” about this problem, i.e. already Republicans are covering up a scandal. Why were the details not made public immediately?

She also clucks that 2/3 of Americans do not know enough to have an opinion about Palin! Why is that? Why has the McCain campaign not done more about THIS problem???

    What are they afraid of???

Katty Couric: let me ask you..

    When will the bias end?

The answer is: Never, and watch out if Big Brobama gets elected: good-bye free speech.

    Hello Second American Civil War!

  • David_Hinz

What is amazing about all this is how making just one phone call to a man like Carey could have given some of the bloggers at The Atlantic and DailyKos pause before they wrote so extensively about it. Why didn’t they do that?

Why would they not check their facts? Because they ARE NOT journalists!

  • NewEnglander

The networks talked about her ALL DAY, but never ran one clip of her speaking before any crowds. Time to let her shine. Put her on Hannity & Colmes, if nothing else. Why are they hiding her??

  • Strelnikov

Here in Columbus there are two Catholic high schools named St. Charles and Bishop Hartley.

    Coincidence?

  • David_Hinz

    long commute

  • Augustine

No, there are two Charles Hartleys listed, one in New york who donated to Clinton, one in California who donated to obama. The Obama donator did not list his occupation and may also be the same Charles Hartley that donated to Jeff Merkley (Oregon Democrat). The timelines and geography don’t match up well for the same Charles giving to both Hilary and Obama.

  • SteveLA

The young Master Hartley we seek is in Ohio.

  • w3bgrrl

I answered my own question: Inky99 started the rumor on the 29th with a poll requesting input on whether he should pursue it.

ArcXIX carried the torch forward on the 30th with overt hatefulness.

By all means… do what is legal.

  • Augustine

His profile lists him as being a Republican and his age is not 24. Then again the 24 is from 1up so don’t know how much that is worth in the end.

  • TomOConnor

Tonight is not the time to put Palin’s mug on tv.

    Tomorrow night at the earliest.

  • gensec

… but it’s also highly unlikely the Obama campaign pushed the story. The Kossak in question is most likely an ardent Obama groupie, but not in any way connected to the campaign. Not that false rumor mongering is beneath Obama’s principles, but because his campaign has no motive in this case.

By itself the “Sarah Palin is Tig’s grandma” rumor was a sure loser for the Obama side, making their supporters look as dumb as the “B. Hussein Obama is a Muslim” guys. I was really enjoying it, seeing those diaries get a lot of support from a large minority of the Kossaks. I was hoping it would go on as long as possible and get well publicized. Obama’s campaign knows politics enough to know that kind of idiocy was hurting them, only a question of a little or a lot.

The incentives are a little more subtle if the Obama campaign knew Bristol was pregnant. In net the false rumors worked out to Obama’s advantage, though probably small, by baiting Palin to announce her daughter’s pregnancy to disprove the rumor. However the Obama campaign couldn’t have known that the McCain-Palin campaign would bungle it so badly, giving it a soap opera spin.

Assuming the Obama team doesn’t assume the McCain-Palin campaign are politically incompetent, they would have expected Palin to just let the rumors continue, getting more attention and public disgust at Obama supporters. Of course her single daughter’s pregnancy would have come out eventually, at which point she could just shrug “So what? Nothing to do with anything that’s any of your business.”

Even if the Obama campaign had known McCain and Palin would fall for the bait, they still had no incentive to push the rumor. It was a rumor already circulated about Palin (which of course nobody with any sense believed). The Obama campaign knows what kind of kooks it has in its base, so they know that any rumor that ever existed about Palin would get dug up by some Obama supporter and recirculated by countless others.

And it could still work to Obama’s disadvantage if the media hysteria provokes enough sympathy backlash among swing voters.

So what would be the motive of the Obama campaign to push the rumor, when they know the rumor will get widely circulated without even the slightest nudge from the campaign?

  • Augustine

I think this should be tracked down…absolutely.
The appalling things that KOS says almost daily are run with by the MSM and blogs simply because of the people they are aiming their “stories” at…far left rat bags. And those ratbags want to believe the worst of people, or at least destroy them with vicious rumors.
As long as they are conservatives of course…liberals are off limits.
Next time you are in the grocery store check out who buys the gossip papers and you will be viewing the non political wing of the KOS-type readership.
And right now they are really really scared of Sarah Palin simply because as one commenter on another site said so aptly [hey, I'm stealing the line it's so good] “Sarah Palin is like Ronald Reagan in a dress and high heels.”
And that’s why they are afraid…

    HEH….
*And I realize by saying that, that now the rumor will start that Ronald Reagan was a cross dresser……sigh

    Charles Hartley

Charles Hartley has been living and practicing law in San Diego County since 2001.

Charles earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Idaho. He worked in Monterey, CA, prior to moving to San Diego.

In a previous career, he worked as a special agent with the Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, completing assignments in Washington, DC; La Paz, Bolivia; and Lome, Togo.

Though he is currently registered to vote as a Republican, his politics trend toward Libertarian. He believes in civil liberties and individual responsibility, restoration of habeas corpus for everyone, and has a long-held interest in coastal access issues that tries to balance his love of going to the beach with an aspiration to someday own a home on the beach.

A proud Californian since birth, he lives with his husband in Escondido

Why do the Dems want to start this fight? It’s just as stupid for them as raising the inexperience issue, where McCain dominates.

This vile rumor targeting a minor is about the most underhanded thing I?ve ever witnessed.

The ArcXIX character from the Daily Kos is quickly trying to hide his tracks.

ArcXIX/Agent Arc seems to created his web presence in 2005.

He seems to be lowlife twenty-five-sh male from Columbus OH infatuated with movies and Batman and creating and posting web images.

In the past few days, he has changed profiles to gosamgo and deleted blogs and has tried to cover his tracks. Google cache is still visible: this cache seems fairly incriminating:
    ?Charles Hartley?s Page on 1UP.com
?AgentArc?. Rank: Genome Soldier Total Points: 14231 AIM Name: ArcXIX. Charles?s Status ? Charles Hartley?s My1UP Page: AgentArc.1up.com ??
The non-cache page at 1Up.com is empty.

    http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/message597034/pg1
A posting by an ?Anonymous Coward? directly links agentarc (now deleted) photobucket picture of the younger Palin.

I usually try not to discover people that try to be anonymous: but some scum attacking a seemingly decent 16 year old- That is where I draw the limit in protecting some lowlife?s cover.

    —- Also —-

    Identity of Daily Kos ArcXIX?
Here is ?another? Charles Hartley at 1UP.com that computes to the same age as the other one.
Is it possible that two Charles Hartley-s signed up the same year at 1UP? Sure, but how likely is it.
This one worked at Mr. Sub in 2004.

Here is the voice of the ?Charles Hartley? who changed his identity on 1UP this week to no longer indicate that his AIM name is ArcXIX (he voices many video game reviews at actionbutton.net):

If you care to anywho Charles Hartley in Columbus… Just sayin’…

  • kandrew

From the appearances of those links, he doesn’t seem to be the kind of guy that’ll be reproducing any time soon… or later.

  • Jack_Savage

Exactly how I expected him to look. I wish for him all he wished for Bristol Palin.

  • paulseale

I would urge caution on this.

I would be making more the case (and will blog on this) why the media is making a splash over this instead of say, Obama’s Bill Aryes connection.. Or what Obama did while working with him.

Or heck, lets talk about Rezco.

Both of these matters go directly to the heart of personal decisions and corruption.

Instead of an examination of decisions and personal judgment (or even experience) we we are seeing instead is a full onslaught of the media to try and shake Sarah in a way that will effect Christian conservative voters (people like my self).

Of course, the thing is, they dont get it. The same people who fear us, do it because they dont understand it and base it on false beliefs.

At this point I feel for Bristol. Do you think Chelsea would have been treated like this? Or even Kerry’s daughter?

Of course not. The media and Democrats feel threatened by her and are doing their best to destroy Palin.

They know what she is and what she can do to their narrative this year.

I will be looking forward to seeing how Sarah handles this – I hope she does it with Reaganesque humor – but with authority.

  • Jack_Savage

I mean, this is kinda James-Bondish…

  • olderthangandalf

While the kid was way into the bad taste zone, two thoughts:

    1) Tortious infliction of emotional distress. Under the law of the land, you can say pretty much anything about public figures, and even their families, but that doesn’t go for private figures. Be careful not to set yourself up for a lawsuit.

    2) Remembering who is classy. When you wrestle with a pig, two things happen – you get muddy and the pig has fun. We are classy; let’s not go to the DKos level.

In other words, have a little fun, but it would be wise to stay within tasteful and reasonable limits.

  • SeanH90050

long time lurker first time poster, but I wanted to chime in on this….

When I first read the link here to the Kos article, I was sick too. But I’m wondering if the discussion of fake news story is some kind of diversion, since they knew the real story of Bristol’s current pregnancy would come out because of it, and the media would have the field day it is now, to the point where it’s eclipsing coverage of a major hurricane? After all, the rumor was old news in Alaska.

I mean, we can slam the original poster just as easy as Obama claims he wants nothing to do with the story. But so what? The “damage” from the Democrat POV would be to create any sense of doubt about Governor Palin’s readiness to undecided and independent voters. Having the media sensationalize this as if it were Britney Spears is exactly the way to do it. It’s all free negative press for the Obama campaign just as the GOP convention starts, as an effort to mitigate McCain’s convention bounce.

  • dbecraft

I’m still waiting for the undercover or at least competent investigation of Obama’s past… I’m sure I will be waiting a very long time…

There is so much to uncover about Obama and the Media is in the “ah shucks” mode.

  • ColumbusConservative

Yea, time to leave him alone. He’s an idiot. Apparantly, Mr. AgentArc is really into the some adult Roleplaying message boards as well. At least, that’s what I saw… and he’s in to sodomy, so… yeeeaaa… I’m leaving his one alone and letting people know that Bristol is no more of a “liability to upset the Christian base” as Cheney’s lesbian daughter is.

  • Carolyne

    ” Buckeye Steel!?

by ArcXIX on Tue Sep 12, 2006 at 06:59:37 AM PDT”

  • Rod_Patrick

They knew it all along. Obamacons concocted the worst story about Bristol to some how hurt Palin and paint Briston as Britney-like teenage girl.

Next, they have really already expected Palin to make an official story about the pregnancy. aLthough lesser in element, they wouls still continue playing that it’s just the same… Bristol’s pregnant anyway.

Then hit Palin so hard by alluding that she’s a bad mother… somewhat similar to “unfit mother”.

Then, their evil goal is achieved.

  • 29Victor

I’m running across the same thing. I found quotes of a user named ArcXIX in the forum at boxofficemojo.com but I could never find the actual user, so I searced for the quoted text and is seems that the user had changed their handle to “gosamgo.” gosamgo.com is the website of a band called “samiam” so there are a number of references the word scattered about the Interweb.

While I agree that the individual who made these accusations should be brought into the light, we must recognize this as an opportunity to differentiate ourselves from DK et al. We are not dumpster diving character assassins.

But this is how we draw a clear distinction between the way the left slanders personally and the right argues intellectually and persuasively on issues of substance.

In other words, wear rubber gloves and keep the discussion sterile when exposing the lies and those behind them; that way their can be no similarities drawn between us and them.

    Hello,

I was so happy to see this post. I have also been looking for the true identity of ArcXIX.

However you have been much more successful than me.

We need to expose ArcXIX’s true identity.

    1) He may very well be closely connected to the Obama campaign.

    2) We must get this info out if he was at University of Chicago with Obama.

    3) He just deserves to be outed. He lsandered an entire family and viciously attacked several minors in the Palin family.

The key to finding the postings of relevance to ArcXIX was to separate the proverbial wheat from the chaff. By yesterday, there were around 5000 Google hits for “ArcXIX”.
But using Google’s minus feature for eliminating words and phrases was key.
If you use the follow search ‘arcxix -palin -dailykos -kos -”daily kos”‘,
the Charles Hartley entry on 1Up shows up as number 13 of 487.
Using ‘agentarc palin’ as a search also proved useful to tie this up nicely as a seemingly ironclad circumstantial case against the 1UP poster that used the name Charles Hartley and the photobucket agentarc.

Honestly, now that this whole scandal has pretty much blown up in the dems face, I wonder how long it will be until they start blaming the vast right wing conspiracy for planting the original rumors. Not on specific rumors, but I have been decrying the abasement of political discourse for some time. It isn’t just the democrats, although they are the worse ones.

This was my first year working for the Board of Elections. I wanted some more hands on training, but the two hundred page manual was quite good.

We had 275 people turnout at our location (twice the amount as last November), and all of them were surprised by the lack of lines. An emphasis on early voting helped relieve the actual day of election by a large margin.

Wish my candidate carried the state, but that is an entirely different can of worms that does not involve the Boards fine execution this year (so far).

Does anyone know a cub reporter in Columbus to try to track this down?
