EDITOR OF REDSTATE

Viable Options

Up top one more time. Please note that I’ve added Saxby Chambliss. — Erick

With only a few weeks left until election day, let’s be blunt: McCain-Palin ’08 does not seem to be making headway against the polling. McCain has one more debate in which he could, and we should hope that he does.

At the same time, the Senate and House Republicans are going to get crushed. They just are. You can say the polls are biased. You can say the polls are rigged. But do so at your peril. Ignore the numbers and look at the trends.

The Republican numbers in the House and Senate can be salvaged, but in the next few weeks there must be a realistic assessment from the McCain campaign regarding winning his own race versus helping Congressional Republicans mitigate their losses. In the best case scenario, he should be able to help himself and the Congressional GOP. And that is possible in a number of cases.

Right now it is a necessity that we help as best we can.

We must be aggressive and involved. Below are the races where, despite the expected smack down, we have a real possibility of picking up these seats. Note that the Senate side is primarily defending our own.

Give any money you can, then get out there and help.

SENATE

Saxby Chambliss in Georgia.

Norm Coleman in Minnesota.

Elizabeth Dole in North Carolina.

Mitch McConnell in Kentucky.

HOUSE

Lou Barletta in Pennsylvania-11.

Rick Goddard in Georgia-08.

Chris Hackett in Pennsylvania-10.

Pete Olson in Texas-22.

Erik Paulsen in Minnesota-03.

Tom Rooney in Florida-16.

These seats are all winnable. But they need your money. Likewise, if you live in one of these districts, they need your on the ground help.

Now, this note is as much for the contributors as it is for you guys, if you want a diary promoted to the front page between now and election day, it must be about the ground game in a race you care about. Even better, tell us all what you are doing to help a candidate.

It’s time to open the wallets one last time then get in the field.

I was confused for a minute there because I knew we were not going to unseat Levin in Michigan.

    Deja vu.

My family has been doing what we can to help both the presidential ticket and our local candidates to win this election.

    My God help us!

May God help us and our candidates!

    Isn’t Coleman from Minnesota?

  • gadawg225

This is really thoughtful. Agreed that the party can and should hold onto MN, NC and KY. I haven’t seen any polling showing McConnell running behind. Also, at the end of the day, I just have to believe the Minnesotans aren’t going to elect a Sen. Franken.

  • Canthros

But that was what I though two years ago about the KY-03 House race this far out from the election.

Has there been any polling in the Yarmuth/Northup race? I haven’t heard anything, and can’t seem to get any sort of feel for the that race this year.

    1. A major terrorist attack. (although at this point, I’m not sure even that would do it.)

    2. Hubby won’t let me put it in print or utter it to anyone else but him, so I’ll leave it to your imagination.

As for me, I’m secretly hoping for # 2.
‘Cuz Lord knowsJohn McCain sure isn’t acting like someone that wants to win this race.

and every Republican needs to run against every other member of Congress.

The People hate Congress. They hate the Bailout. McCain should say that if elected, he will establish a DOJ Task Force and investigate EVERY Representative and EVERY Senator and prosecute EVERY ONE that even smells bad.

    He would win easily.

  • rstreu

I think people are tired of people running against Bush. He’s gone anyway.

Congress is a problem that’s going to stay with us, and definitely worth running against.

  • jamecono

Polling in September indicated an 8 point lead for Yarmuth (from memory, sorry… I regret that I don’t have a link) Certainly it will be a difficult year for Northup to challenge a Democrat incumbent in Louisville, which is nothing if not a Democrat enclave.

FWIW- Northup did herself no favors in ’06 when she seemed to base her campaign endgame mainly upon daily dinnertime robocalls to voters…pretty much ticked everyone off. I hope she’s taking a different approach this time.

I am much more confident about McConnell however.

the Obama + Ayers + Wright dots

I am scared of an Obama victory. However, I also would not be surprised if McCain carries 50 states [and, no that doesn't leave 7 for Obama].

Ayers is a terrorist and he regrets not setting more bombs. Obama said that Ayers was just some guy in the neighborhood, but it turns out he launched his political career from Ayers’ house. Obama lied about Ayers.

What kind of man launches his political career from the house of a terrorist?

Through his words and deeds, Ayers shows that he hates America. Then there’s Obama’s pastor for 20 years, Wright, who curses America. Obama sure seems to attract associates who hate America.

McGovern carried one state. Yet I think Obama is so far out of the mainstream that even most McGovern supporters should be voting for McCain.

The American people just have to connect the [big obvious] dots. Obama loses big-time if the American people connect the dots.

McCain and Palin need to shine the bright light of truth on Obama, Ayers, and Wright. That’s not going negative, because Obama isn’t a typical politician – he’s a terrorist associate.

  • rstreu

ironically, I was just in the middle of taking some notes for a blog/diary about how liberals have gone from people interested in dialogue to hate-screaming morons. Thanks for proving my point.

  • rstreu

  • stephenhalsey

of this so-called October Surprise that’s supposedly coming that wraps up Obama/DNC/ACORN, etc…? Was that just a bunch of smoke blown up our rear ends

  • ridewind

    That’s exactly.

His campaign and his managers like Steven Schimt and R Davis have been searching for the best battleground.

But it is right there: the Dems congress which have caused stalemate.

I have outlined this strategy in my diary.

Frankly, McCain should hire some of us here as his campaign consultants :-)

Well he might have heard me because recently he started to offer clear alternatives to the Congress bailout methods and started to talk more specifically on how Fannie & Freddie went unchecked in the congress. But his presentation looked hestitant. The slide in his polls show some halt.

My guess is that the dirty laundry do involve some Republican Senators which he might not want to hurt. But I would think this is a bad consideration at this point of time because what is at stake is the whole Republican presence at both the congress and the white house. Given that and Dems connection and now really brutal tactics to remove all opponents, if they won all, I will be certain they will ‘clean’ each state of the Republican root with their ‘community organizers’.

    Wake up. McCain campaign.
Look at what is really at stake beyond Nov 4.

I guess I will post one more updated strategy for them later.

  • Darcy

I’m not sure it’s true McCain isn’t making any headway against the polls. There are always mixed results with so many polls out there, but as of today he is within 4 nationally in Zogby and in Gallup’s traditional likely voter model. That is an improvement over where he’s been recently, and if those are correct he’s still within realistic striking distance. Of course it’s still true that these House and Senate races are important.

  • bearstd

your english terminology is outstanding, show your IQ

  • rstreu

Can we please get this class act off the page? We don’t need to see garbage like this uttered at one of our posters.

  • garbear

you get out of the way.

I do still have hopes for McCain-Palin. We haven’t seen a Presidential election in which neither candidate is part of the executive branch since 1952. Also both candidates are atypical–one a leftwinger with an empty resume and the other a self-proclaimed maverick who often went against his party. Considering such things it’s easy and fair to say the polls are whacky and difficult to trust.

As for the congressional and senatorial races, why not let America have what it wants? The Democrat Party is in power in both houses. Three big issues drive this election: The economy is one and it’s faltering mainly because of subprime loans–a Democrat-caused problem; Gas prices are still high compared to recent years and it’s the Democrats who’ve stood in the way of domestic exploration and drilling; The Iraq War is still ongoing and is one in which we are fighting terrorists and an issue upon which the Democrats have repeatedly sided with our adversaries. Also, the approval level for ths Democrat-majority Congress is at an all-time low. Yet, for reasons unknown to me the voting public is about to take out their frustrations on the Republicans.

If America wants more of what they’ve been getting and more of what they’re angry about I say let ‘em have what they want.

You should at least praise President Bush that no major terrorist event has happened after 9/11.

    c17wife’s point is simple:

Americans nowadays are unabashed ingrates to the sacrifices made by the Republican Party in supporting the Government’s program to prevent any form of terrorist attack.

  • SIConservative

I said this at the beginning of the year, but very few wanted to hear it. I’m glad that RedState is now going with this, though. My only quibble would be that I would replace Sen. Dole, whom I think has probably had it, with Sen. Chambliss. It’s a shame that that seat is in jeopardy, but it is. The DSCC is now allocating resources to the state, and they may yet be able to go on the air. If that happens, all bets are off.

I’d rather have Obama win than for ANY American to die in a another terrorist attack on our country-(even if it would ensure a McCain win.)

9-11 was horrible and I hope we never experience anything so vile again. If that means a Dem president this time- so be it.

I’m sure my comment wont be popular, but I’m trying to remember that every 4 years we get another chance to change things. I’m not counting McCain ‘out’ yet- but if he does lose this time, it isn’t the end of the world. 2012 is not so long away.

  • marfan

The Republican Party has been dancing to the tune of greed since 1994 and now it’s time to pay the band. After the Democrats kick us around for a few years, and that’s probably what we need, maybe the Republican Party will wake up and realize how screwed up they have been and start living up to what the Republican Party stands for or at least what they use to stand for.

  • c17wife

    And no hard feelings, really.
    You just made my day.

  • Morton

Vote however you want, but to wish for “option #2″ on someone is not something Jesus would condone. Obama has a family who loves him. Think about what you say next time.

  • builder20

I am a glass half full guy, and I see friends of mine who thought Obama was “cool” switch their view of him and now support McCain. I believe Obama has peaked and now that people are paying attention, as well as seeing that the market has the ability to recover, will swing lots of voters to McCain. That, and the dots that lead to an understanding of Obamas world view are becoming denser and larger by the day!

  • Tbone

“My guess is that the dirty laundry do involve some Republican Senators which he might not want to hurt.”

The People want Congress cleaned out. I expect the Democrats to be scumbags, it is their most consistent trait. The crooked, pork loving Republicans are worse because they are traitors to the conservative base.

McCain is making headway in the polls, despite the financial crisis. The markets are up today. The worse may be behind us. McCain is only down 4 in Gallup LV poll and 7 in Gallup RV poll. He was down 11 last week. Other polls show some slow traction. Don’t buy into the media spin.

I’m a New Englander. Maybe it is the instinct of people who live in Redstates to throw us under the bus

    • Jeb Bradley has a legitimate shot at beating Carol Shea-Porter in NH. She was lucky to run in 2006 and is too radical for that district.

    • Jennifer Horn also has a shot at beating Paul Hodes. She came out of nowhere and the poltical novice mother of five is running a Palinesque campaing

    • Never count John Sununu out. He was down big and made a huge comeback. He is has great energy, funds and a ground game. Sununu has a record of mounting comebacks.

  • weave

I’m not the first person to say this, but the biggest issue in my mind right now is the Senate going to 60 for Democrats, not losing the White House.

Voters blame the current President’s party for economic problems. That’s just the way it is, right or wrong.

No matter who wins, it’s going to be rough for a few years. If Obama wins, the Democrats will take the blame and we’ll see big GOP gains in 2010 and the White House back in 2012. If by some miracle McCain wins, the GOP will get more blame and if we’re not at 60 in the Senate this time around, it’s a sure thing for 2010.

So Erick is right, limit damage in Congress now, and then after the election, it’s time to try to find the next Reagan for 2012.

  • Strelnikov

No doubt because of the change noticed in recent polls.

It is unclear to me, however, how many non-conservatives read Drudge, given the 2/3 who picked McCain/Palin as debate winners in the Drudge poll.

    But maybe it will help.

  • jeffreywturner

I think the Dems have enough invested in Obama, that if McCain can somehow break through the media firewall and win, there could be a significant coat-tail effect, especially since several of the 2006 pick-ups for Dems were just fluke pick-ups due Dems running unopposed, or against scandal ridden Republicans in deep red districts. There are also a couple of pick-up opportunities in the Senate. Landrieu comes to mind as a possible pick-up if McCain does very well in LA.

  • D_Mason

I signed up at this site just to tell you that you are the worst kind of scum. You don’t have to agree with Obama or even like him to refrain from wishing “option 2″ on him. The man has a Family who love him and rely on him. I wouldn’t wish “option 2″ on you even though you are a steaming pile of “Number 2″ who doesn’t deserve to be called human. The fact that your comments are still there and that you are not banned for your hateful rhetoric is a sad testament to this site as well.

c17wife, You are a horrible person and I wish the worst upon you. How in the world could you hope for Obama to be assassinated. I don’t believe in karma but I really wish it existed right now. You make me sick, pathetic plebe. Read some books other than the Bible.

Also, if Ayers is such a big terrorist why was he not only never arrested but is also currently a distinguished Professor in Education and serves on anti-poverty boards… yeah, big terrorist right there! He was a hippy extremist that never personally hurt anyone as far as reliable sources can say. A splinter cell from the Weathermen, AFTER Ayers essentially schismed the organization, was involved in the more violent crimes, which Ayers had no real connection to because he had come clean with the US Government at that point.

Thank god you whacko nutjobs are the minority nowadays and the more qualified candidate will win. Why are you guys so dead set on voting for a screwup son and grandson of four star admirals and a VP candidate that is just ridiculous and doesn’t really need to be outlined.

McVeigh was executed and Ayres continues doing damage spewing is radical views to impressionable minds.

The death-cult nature of certain Obama supporters is distressing, but the first step in solving a problem is admitting it. I mean: you did notice that c17wife was talking about how Obama loses, not how McCain wins, right? Can’t win or lose if you’re dead, kids…

With the media running breathless stories about Republican hate these days, i can’t let you get away with a comment like this.

    Sorry.

The media and others would jump to an unfriendly conclusion. And frankly, when I read it, my first reaction is that you’re hoping something bad happens to Obama.

That the implication is silent and leaves others to their own imagination in this environment is a huge party foul and I hope you’ll clean this up, lest I have to delete the comment.

  • Moe_Lane

If McCain’s path to the presidency will take a terrorist attack or something even worse, so horrifying as to be unmentionable, at least have the decency not to go on record hoping for it.

The initial post was in poor taste and spawned nothing but more hatred from lefties. This thread adds nothing of substance to RS.

  • c17wife

I was actually thinking along the lines of Tim Mahoney’s troubles. Since Ace pulled his story down about such activities, I figured I wouldn’t subject RS to liability.

You said that option #2 was worse than a terrorist attack on American citizens. What did you expect people to assume?

  • Columbo

c17wife: Please, own your words. It is very, very difficult to read “Hubby won’t let me put it in print or utter it to anyone else but him, so I’ll leave it to your imagination” as anything but am expression of a desire that Obama cop it in some fashion. Nothing else is so unutterable. When called on it, you tried to wriggle out with the argument that your vile little list was of ways Obama loses.

In your option 2, Obama loses. Big time.

“As for me, I’m secretly hoping for # 2.”

    Right. Back. Atcha.*

  • c17wife

I most definitely did not say #2 was worse, just that I was personally rooting for that option.

You should really read the whole thread before you jump to such conclusions.

  • c17wife

    so very concerned about Barack.
Give me a break. You lefties always go for the culture of death.

2 is a great option for the US. It wou ld suck for Obama’s kids, but it would make certain that Barack goes the way of John “Breck girl” Edwards and that would be a huge win for America.

Now that you have defended Barack so well, I’m sure we can expect the same the next time your brethren call for such action against, Bush, McCain, Sarah Palin, or any other rightie, no?

Lastly, sparky, I don’t have to wiggle out of jack squat. I have a 3+ year posting history here and most of the regulars knew that I wasn’t going down that road. And I’ll give Erick some slack since he is obviously as stressed out as I am over this whole god-forsaken pathetic election.

I’ve read most of c17wife’s posts over a long time, and as a lib, I disagree with her much of the time. But, I have always taken her to be a passionate conservative with interesting insights and a provocative style. (pretty clear from the post) Her voice is an asset to the site.

I do see your point though. Especially given how things are playing right now. By the way, I saw you on CSPAN this weekend. Nice speech!

  • Badill_T

You’re being disingenuous. If you can state that #1 is a terrorist attack, and #2 is so bad that you can’t even mention it, it stands to reason that #2 is worse than #1. If #2 weren’t worse, you’d be able to state it directly.

You’re not doing this site any favors talking about terrorist attacks and unmentionables of any sort being needed to win the election. I know its fun to pull a bait and switch on the lefties who registered to attack you over your joke (or whatever that was), but your comment was in poor taste.

My reading comprehension is sufficient to grasp both the strict literal meaning and obvious implications of your comment.

  • Swamp_Yankee

but I guess she wasn’t pure enough. I’m a right winger in a Blue State. I understand practical politics and pragmatism. Sometimes Red state Republicans do shoot themselves in the foot. Steven Pearce is a lousy candidate in a Purple state. It’s like giving the Dems the Senate.

So I can vote for a Kirk if he is pro-choice, especially against a guy like Seals, but for him to proudly display an endorsement from PP is just too much for me. I am seriously considering voting for neither candidate (I will absolutley never vote for the carpetbagger Seals).

That’s not what lots of smart folks in the Obama campaign think. They believe Obama’s poll numbers are artificially high, McCain’s are artificially low, this race will come down to two or three points, and anything could happen.

You people got to take your Meds

  • c17wife

figure out why McCain and Sununu haven’t stumped together and brought out their attempt to rein in FAnnie and Freddie.

Sununu and Elizabeth Dole were co-sponsors of that legislation with McCain.

You’d think they would be trying to hammer this home in the final stretch.
At any rate, thanks for trying to drag Johnny Mac and Sununu over the finish line.

Oh, how I wish I was stateside right now.

  • ronalddaniels

Goddard is in a tough race, but it is by the far the best chance of a pickup we have this year. Marshall won by only 1700 votes in 2006 and has had to resort to negative ads to keep himself going.

Marshall voted for the bailout despite so many of his constituents saying not too.

If we have a “good” shot at picking up a seat, it’s GA-08. It’s going to be a tough battle though, and the campaign needs help.

  • CV_Gas

Is it just me or does it seem like every time McCain seems to closing the gap a little bit then some “pollster” releases a poll that miraculously reveals a yawning gap in support between the two candidates? I mean you have the Gallup likely, Zogby and Rasmussen all showing a narrowing and all of a sudden you have Democracy Corp and WashPo with a double digit lead for Deus Obamus. Why include Democracy Corp and not ARG? I speaking primarily toward RCP. Thanks.

  • Badill_T

Erick saw the same obvious implications a number of us saw, and asked you to clarify. You clarified. The fact that this was necessary validates my point.

I didn’t jump to conclusions, I stated the obvious: your post implied that you were hoping for something worse than a terror attack. It was open to interpretation and many gave you the benefit of the doubt due to your long history at this site, but it was what it was.

  • E_Pluribus_Unum

You enjoy dishing on one of our better posters. Other than that, I just hear noise from you. And piling on when the RS Director scolds our better posters, well, that really speaks for itself, doesn’t it?

  • pwest

McCain can win, but so can Obama. I hate these close elections; before the stock market melt down, I thought McCain might win 40 states. Now, if he does win, it will be another nail biter; I’ll take it, but I’m sick of these close elections. Of course, I don’t want Obama to win 40 states either because they will hurt Palin.

  • E_Pluribus_Unum

If the question seems unclear, then I refer you to the longer version I have included for your convenience:

Do you have a body of work here or elsewhere that gives you the credibility to gratuitously dish on one of our best posters, regarding matters you know nothing about?

    Nah, didn’t think so.

I’d love to e-mail you about something. I’m taking, “This History of Political Philospohy” right now. My Professor is a total Lib, and I’d love to tell you what he says about taxes and religion.

Take out the weighting that favors Democrats and you’ve got a tie. And if I’m not mistaken, Kerry led Bush in the polls. Ditto Gore.

    Why so pessimistic, Erick?

Lurker registered to say this is NOT helping McCain. Do we really need more idiocy feeding the media narrative of ‘crazy violent thugs for McCain/Palin’? You know damn well they jump on something just a few people say and use it as a broad brush for all his supporters.

I don’t know what you ‘meant’ by #2, but it looks a lot like you’re ‘secretly hoping’ Obama gets assassinated, and I’m sure I’m not the only one reading it that way, regardless of what you ‘really meant’.

Come on, you guys are better than that. This is sinking to levels not even the nuts at DKos would go to. Delete this bullshit.

… that what c17wife really meant by #2 was that she wanted Moe to ban Obama as a troll.

    Truly, not to be uttered!

Moe, that gun must be getting hot…

  • kyle8

I will be thinking that things have turned around. This is a great start, but we need sustainability.

I have money to burn but am still pensive about getting into the market. But I might go with undervalued real estate.

  • rstreu

she explains exactly what she meant later on down the line. Perhaps read the discussion before you toss in your .02

  • pwest

I hate to keep bugging you, but do you have a link to the poll. I looked on the web, but I didn’t see the poll.

  • Swamp_Yankee

It’s not going to turn completely around, but the public has been whipped into a frightened frenzy to the point they are willing to look at socialism.

Gas is way down. Markets are way up. News cycles cant beat the same drum forever, People get bored. The hysteria will wither and so will “the end of capitalism” headlines. As they recede, so will Obama’s numbers

I really think we have to sit back and take a moment away from polls. They are fallible. Everybody seems to forget this.

  • Catsy

Speaking as someone who probably has almost nothing in common with c17wife, who initially read her implications the same way Erick did, you may want to re-read her follow-up.

Wishing for Obama to go the way of Edwards is a pretty clear allusion to a career-ending sex scandal.

I’m not sure why this is something she couldn’t have typed out in the first place, but as an Obama supporter I’ll be the first to agree that I’d rather see Obama’s career go down in flames like that than have another terrorist attack on the country, so I’m with her on her ordering of priorities.

  • Moe_Lane

How dumb of him was that. :)

  • Wing_Zero

As a former Georgian, living just beneath the beltway, I don’t hear alot from home.

who is running against Chambliss, and who is ahead in that race?

Some of us were saying the same things about Sen. McCain. However, you go into an election with the candidates you’ve got, not the ones you want.

Jim Martin, former State Legislator. Liberal as cuss. Saxby is taking A LOT of flack for the bailout here.

It’s a dead heat by several polls, but an average shows Saxby ahead by 7% with the Libby candidate taking away from either having a clear 50%.

  • Siberian

McCain hasn’t shown any real gains, just noise in the polls unfortunately.

  • denveratheist

Even in my darkest moments of the GWB admin, I never hoped for a #2.

You can backpedal all you want. We know what you meant. That you weren’t instantly banned says more just as much as your veiled threat. I certainly hope who ever spies on us nowadays is paying close attention to this thread. But just to make sure, I am going to forward this to the local authorities, for what it’s worth. My hope for civil discourse on RS is gone. Good luck, loonies. Please delete my account, or leave it alone. I don’t care.

Before the primary, Wilson was running even further behind Udall than Pearce. If Pearce didn’t have a chance, neither did Wilson. Both should’ve kept their House seats. This seat is going to fall not because of Pearce or because of Wilson, who, though I don’t like her, lost very gracefully, but because of Udall’s popularity in-state and the national environment. This year’s GOP freshman class in the Senate will consist of two members: Mike Johanns and Jim Risch. Risch will win because he’s in a deep red state and Johanns will win in no small part because Democrats blew their chance to recruit their strongest candidate. In fairness, though, Johanns had a shot even if Kerrey did win. Don’t start blaming the New Mexico race on conservatives.

  • Mr_Green

Or did you just make a real death threat against a commenter on redstate? Wouldnt this make you a bit of a hypocrite (and a horrible person, but for anyone making death threats that’s pretty much a given)?

of the GOP in presidential elections. These conversations like this go on almost every four years and in the end, the polling tightens and we win 7 of 10 and and 7 of 7 against known leftists and Obama’s wright is known and obama is getting better known as risky every day.

Yes, we should prioritize races with money, but we should not use polls to suggest defeatism.

That is the purpose of much of the polls and remember, the polls ask who you would vote for TODAY. Nothing happens after telling a pollster anything.

That;s why things change in our favor in the booth.

  • AmericanMidge

So you are really now trying to back pedal and say “Hubby” won’t let you say “sex scandal”? I hope he still ?lets? you vote.

  • SeamusMC

I don’t want any innocent person to die. I don’t want Obama to die. Another terrorist attack would be horrible, and I am not suggesting otherwise.

But an Obama presidency would mean that more innocent, defenseless children will die in their own mother’s wombs–and probably outside of it, considering his views on medical care for survivors of botched abortions.

Abortion would be liberalized to the maximum extent. All the progress pro-life people have made will be reversed and then some. Obama will have the chance to pick Supreme Court justices which will kill any chance of overturning Roe v. Wade for the foreseeable future.

An Obama presidency is certainly one of the worst things that could happen to this country. All the terrorist attacks in the world do not compare to the massive slaughter of the innocents that is abortion.

    Just say NObama.
