Orrin’s Army

Join his army at [the NRSC's website](http://www.nrsc.org)

Orrin Hatch is fighting mad. He is fired up. I spoke with him late yesterday afternoon. He’s been out on the campaign trail explaining to people what would happen if the Democrats got to sixty votes in the Senate. And he is throwing punches.

He’d also kill me if I did not plug the NRSC’s website: http://www.nrsc.org

Go there and be a part of what he is calling “Orrin’s Army.” Say what you will about the NRSC’s operations from two years ago. John Ensign is doing an awesome job, but he needs help.

I asked Senator Hatch first about ACORN. “We’ve known for years that ACORN is an arm of the Democratic Party,” he said. They never talk about Republicans he said, just like the unions. He thinks ACORN does need to be investigated. But, he told me, the problem is that a lot of ACORN’s activities are at the state level and the Democrats won’t go after them. The Democratic officials at the state level “create a very bad situation,” he said. They are allowing ACORN to create “major defects in election laws.” Likewise, he said unions are a huge problem.

Unions covet a filibuster proof, Democrat controlled Senate relentlessly. “They are unaccountable. They’ll spend a billion dollars this election and $950 million will be soft money to get out the vote for Democrats,” he said. Meanwhile, the GOP must use hard dollars for GOTV operations. Senator Hatch used Gordon Smith as an example. “You have to agree that Gordon Smith is a fine Senator,” he said. “And despite massive spending against him, Gordon is even in the polls.” Nonetheless, it is a very tough race with union dollars and ACORN fraud trying to corrupt the election.

At this point in the conversation, he again plugs the NRSC’s website: http://www.nrsc.org.

We also talked about card check. “The Democrats are very cocky about winning and picking off Republicans,” he said. But he thinks as they get closer to sixty they’ll have more trouble picking off Republicans. He said, “Anyone who votes for card check is voting to destroy this country.” While he agreed with me that the way card check would structure union votes in companies is bad, he said the “worse part of the legislation is that card check would require compulsory arbitration after ninety days if collective bargaining failed. The government would set the terms of employment for two years. It’d drive companies out of business or overseas.”

“It would be an unmitigated disaster for the country if they got a filibuster proof Senate,” Senator Hatch told me. “This morning I read they want to end 401(K) plans. Can you imagine that? Anyone with a workplace retirement account is now rich, according to them.” The plan would kill 401(K) plans and create government accounts with three percent interest. Even in the economic downturn, 401(K)’s are averaging better than that. Senator Hatch agreed with me that it would kill the American dream by keeping the poor, poor and bringing the middle class down.

“President Obama said the first bill he’d sign if he got elected was the Freedom of Choice Act. That legislation is stark raving nuts. Without the ability to filibuster, he’ll get it,” Senator Hatch pointed out. The law would repeal the Partial Birth Abortion Ban, end parental consent for abortion, and mandate taxpayer funded abortions. “The Democrats will vote in lockstep,” he said. “They’ve sold the country down the river” and are “more interested in power” than solving America’s problems.

Turning to the Presidential campaign, Senator Hatch pointed out “the Democrats have chosen as their standard bearer the most liberal member of the United States Senate. He’s number one. His running mate is number three. Bernie Sanders, the self-declared Socialist is number 4. If you think they’re going to come up with any fiscal conservative positions, you’re nuts.” He continued, “Obama will take more from people who pay taxes and give the money to people who don’t. Clinton said he’d take care of the middle class and then the Democrats passed the largest tax increase in history,” Senator Hatch pointed out. He said Obama would do just the same.

So what can we do? Senator Hatch would say go to the NRSC’s website: http://www.nrsc.org Donate. Get Involved. Fight the fight and spread the word.

The potential ramifications are just too great with a filibuster proof Senate.

The NRSC website is well done and they have even added donations through PayPal.

I am hoping and praying and begging that people will get involved and fight the fight. Not only on the national level but at the state and local levels as well.

It’s time to start holding all levels of elected officials accountable.

Any idea on how the Senate would look if the election were held today?

Are any of the Senate Races close and trending in our direction?

  • Swamp_Yankee

A RINO is someone who has a voting record that is left of their constituency. Period. That should be memorialized. Having moderate voting record that is to the Right of your moderate or left leaning constituency does not make you a RINO.

We need Gordon Smith right now. The guy is running in Oregon for goodness sake. No he is not a solid vote, but he is an ?R? in Oregon. What do people expect, Tom Coburn?

We sure could have used Heather Wilson right now. She has wide appeal in New Mexico, a purple state. So she is liberal on a couple of issues. Again, New Mexico is not Oklahoma or Georgia. Pearce has given us nothing.

And don?t rule out John Sununu. He is the youngest member of the Senate, an MIT engineer, and effective legislator, a discerning and conscientious conservative, and a tireless worker and campaigner. He?s one of our best and brightest and some throw him under the bus because he is a New Englander. He is a solid Republican if not perfect. He may not have the down home charm of a Southerner, but he is a good guy, a good Senator and a good Republican. FIGHT.

I say this as a full spectrum conservative from Massachusetts. Our politicians have to compromise. It’s the only way to win in Blue and Purple states and sustain Congressional majorites.

at 538 for Senate race summaries.

The site is controlled by a lib, but he’s really more a statistician than a liberal.

He has the odds of the Dems getting 60 seats at about 30%.

You can also try CQ Politics’ Senate map. And Electoral Vote. Neither of which is all the optimistic, either. But thengiven the way the polls are, it’s not surprising.

  • E_Pluribus_Unum

His mealy-mouthed capitulation not only to the Dems but the RINOs has been part of how we got here.

God for him, now that the butt end of the Titanic is up in the air, to grab a bucket and start bailing.

    Bah!

I’m glad everyone on this site has such short memories. The NRSC was vilified in 2006 on this board non-stop. Just mention the word “Chafee” here and you would’ve been flamed off the site forever.

And I am sure the NRSC still has everone’s pennies from the all too helpful “not one penny more” campaign championed here.

Now, we have a post talking about saving the “RHINOs”, voting for the Rhinos, and giving to the evil NRSC.

So, our backs are up against the wall facing down one of the most liberal/socialist politicians in a generation, and Rhinos are now OK?

Which is it Redstate — NRSC or not? Political Expediency or Principles?

Good name calling too. Stay klassy.

Battle plans do change. We were allied with the Soviets in WWII and then in a cold war with them for over 40 years. It’s all about limiting damage, especially in the Senate. Can you not see that a potential Obama presidency + a 60 vote super majority in the Senate is not problematic. If McCain is elected, same thing. Pelosi with a strong House majority and Reid with a veto proof Senate could just go around him whenever they wanted to.

  • aceintx

Sadly I’m not very confident that it would do any good anyway because I don’t believe the Republicans in the Senate have the principles, the desire, or the intestinal fortitude to mount a filibuster of anything the Dems shove down their throats anyway…we could count on the usual suspects, Graham, Snow, Collins, Specter, etc. lead by our current nominee to “Reach across the isle” in search of “Bipartisan Consensus”

We need deparately to stop the Dems from getting to 60…but even more…we need to clean out the bums on our side who can always be counted on to help the Dems when the chips are down!

  • alexmiller

This is a stupid conversation. In 2006 did we not face the possibility of a strengthened Reid-led Dem Senate as well? We did.

Yet this board went to the mat to send the NRSC pennies(!) because they backed Rhino Chafee for political expediency. What’s the difference now – The One is running?

My point is that this board is all over the place, political expediency or principles — what do we stand for?

2006 the threat wasn’t so bad, or so scary, so it allowed us to stand on our high horses and judge the NRSC unjust for its support of Chafee (which was wrong btw).

But now the threat is all to real, and a Dem super majority is really, really, really, really, really bad so the hell with Republcian principles, what is the quickest, most expedient move we can make now? Love a rhino and donate to the NRSC.

Can we have it both ways?

First time they can’t do something, they’ll just remove the rule. After all the posturing about Republican threats to do it, it won’t matter. The MSM will support them too, saying something like, “it’s high time we removed the roadblocks to change”.

  • aceintx

I’m not one that’s on both sides…the NRSC has noone but themselves to blame for their current dire circumstances…and Orrin Hatch is a little late sounding the alarm don’t you think?

After all…Has the Dem’s in the Senate confirmed a single bush appointee to the Federal Bench since the gang of 14 sold us down the river? I think the answer is no…they’ve blocked everything and where has hatch been since he’s on the judiciary committee…where’s Specter?…where are the rest of this cowards and pandering boobs?

And I respectfully disagree with Erick where Ensign is Concerned…All I’ve heard from him is endless excuses about how bad the atmosphere is for Republican candidates and we don’t have a chance…coupled with endless requests that we send money to an endeavor he’s already given up on…

As terrified as I am of an Obama Presidency coupled with a Veto proof majority in the Senate and Dem gains in the House…there’s a part of me that wants to scream out that you’ve gotten what you’ve asked for AXXholes!

that have set the tent ablaze and are currently bowing before the alter of the golden child in an effort to lick some crumbs from the floor at their master’s feet?

The one good thing that will come out of this election is that the Republican rank-and-file will finally take back the party and we will emerge with new party leadership.
