The Palin Trip to Georgia

I was going to post-jack Josh’s post, but instead I’ll go all ego and put up my own post here.

Governor Palin will be in Georgia on Monday. In fact, she’ll be 30 minutes from my house at 1:30 p.m.

So anyway, I’ve decided to buy my wife a shotgun for Christmas. I could use Governor Palin’s advice on this as I’ve never bought a gun before. It will need to be a manly gun because I will take ownership of it once the three year old decides boys are not as yucky as she thought.

This is all to ask, rather shameless, can Christy and I get tickets or face time or something? Please?

By the way, I voted today for Saxby. Even in Democrat leaning Bibb County, the early voting numbers look good for Saxby. Let’s keep it up and keep the Dems from getting to 60.

    Great first shotgun

It is a 410 which will make is good for your wife to handle and easy on the shoulder.

  • aaronbg

just use the scroll button on the pic to see the different versions of the 500 series.

  • Erick

She’s definitely getting one. I just don’t know what type, etc.

    This is handy info.

  • kowalski

…And if she’s only 30 minutes away, that’s 30 minutes you should use to get an interview. 60 seats is no kind of number for the Democrats to have in the Senate, so c’mon people, dig deep and support Senator Chambliss.

I’m from Massachusetts and I know that there’s nothing I can do to change the electoral balance in this state right now, but that’s no reason for me to allow Saxby Chambliss to lose.

As far as the shotgun is concerned, I’d recommend something from the Mossberg “Just In Case” series. Waterproof case, survival kit and very wieldy. I’m sure Governor Palin could handle one and I’d actually like to see that picture.

  • JustLeaveMeAlone

20 gauge, double barrel, side by side. Any model.

    thoughtfully,

    The other Sarah P :)

If you go with a .410 shotgun to minimize the recoil, then do yourself a favor and also pick up a Taurus Judge, which takes Colt .45 ammo along with .410 shotshells. Really a unique defensive handgun particularly if you have a shotgun to match.

  • zeebeach

That was my first (as a 12 year old girl), a gift from grandpa so I could hunt pheasants with him and not just walk along with no firearm. Great memories.

  • Dave_in_Fla

I thought you were a powerful and influential member of the new media?

  • Skanderbeg

BTW, Erick, it’s a really bad time for gun-shopping.

What with the new crew ready to roll in and possibly do what you might expect, gun dealers are being stampeded.

I’ve got a great local dealer I’ve known for a long time, and the best they can do right now is wait-list me on a particular model that I finally decided to pull the trigger (pun intended) on getting. All I really care about is landing one before the new clowns try to ban them (again).

  • jdripper

Mossberg for home defense the 500s are marvelous.

  • towdogInCal

It’s perfect. The barrel swaps easily for a 12ga short barrel and stock comes off for a pistol grip. Instant riot gun, scares the hell out of daughter’s boyfriends when you’re cleaning it.
Swap again, insert a wooden dowel in the mag and you’re off dove hunting.
Actually the 500 was what we used for years in the military.
Get pictures when she gets to the coffee shop!

  • Scope

Is there any advertising for the Palin rally? Is she going to be in a vary large area? I saw her in Richmond before the election along with more than 20,000 others. I was about 15 feet from the stage. I don’t know why but I thought she was taller. You’ll love it, as she was electrifying in VA and really knows how to get a crowd pumped up. She could hardly get three words out between all the cheers and chants.

As far as the 3 year old- Are you going to try the 10 page questionaire before the shotgun?

  • Scope

I don’t know how much of a Palin supporter you are, but, have you seen this Draft Palin 2012 Fla. website. It may be someone you know. My only suggestion for the site would be to take McCain’s picture off the site- it won’t speak well of Palin for the future.

I like them because, uh um, their a customer of mine :) I agree with Skanderbeg, gun companies are not in a recession.

  • ATLconservative

Rally here (north metro Atlanta) at 4:00 on Monday. No word yet on an exact location, though.

If she can get me to begrudgingly vote for McCain, she can get me to begrudgingly vote for Chambliss.

  • paulag1955

Erick, if you haven’t already, sign up for Twitter before you go. Then you can post online what’s happening at the event from your cell phone. You know, for those of us who can’t be there.

  • KevinM

All depends on the purpose for the shotgun. If it’s home defense it’s tough to beat either a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870. On size, I would go with 12 gauge, but if she’s small, 20 gauge would suffice. Regardless of type and brand, get familiar with using it, even a single shot is better than nothing.

  • VanishingNYRep

As we all know from reading RedState, Gov. Palin made herself the most accessible to the press than the other 3 national candidates. This was surpressed by the biased media who didn’t want to contradict their story-line that she was an idiot.
After the appearance or rally with Sen. Chambliss, Gov. Palin should have a news conference and show them what she can do. She’ll be great.
    Go Gov. Palin!

  • Snake45

I own three Mossberg 500s and a Remington 870 and there’s no question whatsoever that the Rem 870 is the better gun. A 12 gauge 870 is about as close to an “all around gun” as you can get, and you simply cannot buy a finer pump shotgun at any price. The Mossy 500 is a good *gun, but handle both for 30 seconds and anyone can see and feel that the Rem 870 is the *superior weapon.

Someone at AR15.com said this a couple years ago, and I quote it often: “If the Remington 870 is an option, the Remington 870 is the solution.” Amen! Thus endeth the lesson.

  • ScottWP

I so love my Mossberg 590 (with bayonet lug), but methinks maybe I should explore the Rem 870…that’s quite a reco you’ve made there…

Besides, can a man really have too many shotguns? (note to self: don’t ask wife this question…)

  • JohnRichardson

Specifically a Remington 870 with a Knoxx Spec Ops recoil compensator. You can get one pre-installed or just buy a Rem. 870 or Moss. 500 and order one for it from Knoxx

  • Erick

but if she’s small, 20 gauge would suffice.

    She’s 6 feet tall.

to demonstrate her great charisma and ability to connect with people. Gun rights and card check are great issues for her to talk about, as well as the importance of a workable Rep minority in the Senate.

I expect her to start staking out her own ploicies and positions now that she is free of the constraints of being part of a ticket.

I am cautiously optimistic re Chambliss and Coleman.

  • Snake45

…as I said, I have three M500s too–two of them for 20+ years and one for 30+. They’ve given good service and good value. But the smoothness and tightness of the 870 makes the Mossbergs feel like cheap rattletraps.

The difference in price between the two isn’t that great, especially if you can find a clean used 870 (which is likely to be even better than a brand-new one). How often in life can you move up from “good enough” to the best for so little money? Hardly ever.

ALSO, anyone owning a “social” shotgun (or planning to) should buy and read Massad Ayoob’s book Stressfire II. It’ll tell you everything you need to know to get the most out of your lead dispenser, and is almost as good as taking Ayoob’s combat shotgun course (LFI-II) in person, which I have also done.

  • Grim

    I have both a Remington 870 12 gauge and a .410 Mossberg 500.

    500 vs. 870:
The 870 is a better gun; however, the control layout on a Mossberg is better for a first timer. The thumb safety and rear slide release is simply easier to use (at least for my wife).

    12 gauge vs. .410:
While the .410 is a great gun, I don’t recommend the .410 for home defense. It simply doesn’t have the power.
The 12 gauge is also a great gun, but it kicks fairly hard. Your wife might not like it. My wife is OK with it.

I recommend you let your wife shoot a 12 gauge pump and see if she’s comfortable with it. If she’s not, I’d recommend dropping down to a 20 gauge (but not a .410). The shortened youth models are easy to handle.

If you want to kill a drug-addled intruder, use buckshot. If you want to make them mad, use birdshot. Birdshot leaves a nasty wound but it won’t immediately stop a determined attacker. A well placed shot with buckshot should result in a DRT (Dead Right There) every time.

My 12 gauge is outfitted with a Hogue youth synthetic stock and an 18″ barrel for more maneuverability inside the house. 18″ is the shortest barrel you can buy legally. Because it is so light it kicks like a mule. I normally have 2-3/4″ 00 buckshot in my gun case.

I vote for the Saiga 12. Sold here by the Russian American Armory. It is a magazine feed semi-automatic shot gun. It also comes with a 20 round drum for those who want to make Paco the Sunshine Boy piss his panties.

Its modeled after an Ak-47 and is very comfortable to shoot. I shot it a few times this past weekend and its definitively on the acquisition list.

here. 20 ga for light birding and such, 12 ga for “bear insurance.”

Winchester Super X3 shotgun.Shoot 12 shells in 1.5 sec. Good for squirrels.

  • Achance

I think that Saiga 12 would really look good on the gun rack in my truck! Never seen one around here, but you can buy most anything that goes bang in Anchorage.

  • Snake45

…is that it’s likely to end up on the upcoming “assault weapons” ban list. The common 870 and M500, probably not.

The upcoming AWB won’t be like the last one, where they just stopped manufacture of new ones. The new ban will require re-registration in order to be legally “grandfathered” in, and this registration will later be used as a confiscation/turn-in list. Good luck to them rounding up all the used Mossberg 500s and Remington 870s in circulation, which between them prolly run to double-digit millions.

  • Snake45

…that ObeyMe wants to ruin the firearms industry and talk radio, two segments of the US economy that are doing QUITE well right now and not asking for any handouts at all.

  • Hugh_Taylor

I strongly recomend that you speak to Hamp Dowling at the Eagle Gun Range here in Macon. He teaches a course for the famliy on home defense and gun safety. My wife and I attended and it was well worth the time spent. Bought her a 20 gauge pump Mossberg with a strobe light on it.
Also see that Mike Huckabee will be in Macon this Friday Nov 27 at Barnes & Noble in Riverside Crossing. He has a new book re: fair tax, etc.

  • itrytobenice

Shells are too $$$$. If she wants it a little softer on the shoulder, get a 20 gauge. You can reload the shells with a light load and get the same effect as a 410.

Or she may be like me and content with the 20 gauge.

My dad got hubby and me a Browning Citori Grade IV 20 gauge with a 28 inch barrel, which is a sweet little thing.

Now hubby is looking at a Benelli Super Sport 12 gauge, and young son wants a Benelli Coroba. Both of them are probably going to reside in our humble abode by the next time bird season rolls around. They are both engineered to have less kick and less climb.

  • stephenhalsey

a RedState gun thread! I can’t remember ever seeing one here.

Congrats Erick on weaponizing. I’ve done the same thing myself. I purchased a 9mm CZ 75b pistol a while back and just recently purchased a Mossberg Special Production 500 Tactical shotgun. I’m looking to add an AR ASAP before HR 6257 gets cranked up by the Marxists on January 20.

I’m quickly of the opinion that you cannot have enough weapons or ammo right now.

Here is a very informative video about shotguns and home defense, it’s about 5 minutes.

the pencil-necked, testosterone challenged metrosexual types will find it scary. If the Saiga guys would just keep some nice warm wood on theirs, like an old AK, that would be a “friendly-looking” weapon.

This is what I want for Christmas. I have been a very good boy this year.

    Good, I got someone’s attention.

This was just part of the diatribe I received Thanksgiving weekend from a close blood relative.

Said relative worked tirelessly for Obama the last month of the campaign in Michigan and it was rattled off like a talking point of many many things Sarah doesn’t know or do.

    I was stunned.

  • kudzu630

You can find them running from $400 to $700 depending on the caliber (12 or 20), kit attached (scope, grips, stocks, etc…) and magazine.
