Save Taxpayers, Not GM

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX), a member of the Republican Study Committee, has had enough of Congressional bailouts.

Right now there is $350 billion left of he $700 billion Congressional bailout funds. He has an alternative to more bailouts: a two month tax holiday.

Gohmert’s tax holiday plan is elegant in its simplicity: every American taxpayer would pay no federal income or FICA taxes for the first two months of 2009. For the typical American family — earning about $50,000 a year — that would mean they would keep about $2000 that would otherwise be paid to the government.

Gohmert’s plan doesn’t pay for Wall Street bonuses or let banks use bailout money to buy other banks or pay dividends. It doesn’t rely on bureaucrats to pay money out to the right people at the right time or try to stimulate the economy with token payments to people who don’t pay taxes.

Gohmert would like to hold the holiday in January or February of next year. It would cost approximately $332 billion, still cheaper than using the rest of the bailout money for a bailout.

Freeing individuals from two months of federal taxation would be a substantial benefit to families and the economy. “Those who can’t catch up on their mortgage get one-third of their money back each month and then they’ll be able to catch up on their mortgages. They’ll be able to refinance their mortgages, they’ll be able to buy stock that they can’t currently buy,” Gohmert said.

He added, “Somebody earning $72,000 would get a couple of thousand dollars back a month if we allow them to get back both income tax and FICA.”

You can sign our petition to support Congressman Gohmert. As events unfold and the legislation is drafted, we will email petition signers with the names and phone numbers of Congressmen to call to support the Gohmert plan.

Best of luck there..

You’re gonna need it.

I can’t figure out why this idea reminds me of frozen turkeys, penguins, and lead balloons.

Looks like grandstanding to me.

Karl Marx has just gotten himself elected President of the USA and this good congressman thinks we are going to take Karl’s free candy store away?

On top of that, *This is the most important reason this will not work; * Karl Marx is not about to let people find out what its like to get their entire pay check for even just one payday let alone a month or two. He will protect the Second and Third Planks at all cost.

But hey, I’m all for this idea myself…

Big problem/benefit there.

itrytobenice Monday, December 1st at 11:39AM EST (link)

Problem for them, benefit for me. If Americans ever see a whole entire paycheck, rather than the tax decimated one they are taking home now, there could be rebellion in the ranks.

The Ds won’t ever allow it. Plus, all those people who don’t have jobs wouldn’t get any benefit at all, and you know we couldn’t have that.

Best of luck to him. I’m on his side. But we sure don’t have a majority.

The problem with America is stupidity. I’m not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don’t we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Yeah, let the kids pay for it.

A little fiscal responsibility is apparently too much to ask from the present Republican GOP brain trust, and has been for eight years. I wonder why the Dems, who don’t even pretend to have any, kicked the GOPs butt last month.

My favorite vote

I enjoy my day every time I get to vote for Gohmert. He is the perfect representative for this area of Texas. If you haven’t seen it yet, find his bill on what should be done if GITMO is closed. Gotta love this guy!!

good idea... not going to happen.

Redman_Blueworld Tuesday, December 2nd at 6:34PM EST (link)

This would be a financially sound move, but unfortunatly, we live in a nation of greed and illuminati socialists. This won’t eve happen. Plain and simple. Politicians are currently dreading the oil and gas condition, because they know it won’t last, and they’ll be blamed for the prices when they go back up. The same with this tax holiday, people will love it, sure, but they’ll hate the federals government for reinstating their taxes.

Good idea... But if it catches some momentum...

Taking the risk of looking like a dork, I faxed over an idea very similar to this to my congressman, Tom Petri (R) WI, around the time of the TARP debate.

Quite a number of people have received some math-error-filled chain emails along the lines of this idea too.

But! But, can this concept get enough momentum that the Dems won’t be able to ignore it? Maybe. Will it ever pass? No, Pelosi won’t even let it come to the floor. End result… a conservative win?

Why stop there?

deltar Wednesday, December 3rd at 1:23PM EST (link)

Let’s just forego any pretense of economic conservatism completely. Just stop taxing the public entirely. All expenditures can be paid with borrowing.

The thought of a 2-month tax holiday is so stupid it could only have come from Congress.

Wouldn't help me unless ..

they dropped the top amount you can pay for the whole year.

Of late, I’ve been fortunate to have a tax holiday every november and december.

This is a superb idea. I’d much rather have a two month tax holiday than sit back and watch Washington dole my money out to poorly run automotive companies that support the elections of the liberal illuminati. This is the kind of thinking - and action - that the GOP needs right now, and for the next four years of retooling.

What are you doing here with that link?

DONTREADONME Wednesday, December 3rd at 3:28PM EST (link)

Let us examine that link you have there? Hmmm, I have some interesting news for you, that plot is misleading… Let me see here, now who was running Congress during the 80’s? Now let us look at the W. Bush years hmmm? interesting it appears to plateau right before the Democrats took Congress again… Then what does do? skyrockets wow, do not write five-ten comments over the last year and pretend you have something of value to say.

One last thing, that plot is a two dimensional, notice it compares a ratio of GDP to Debt do not try to put together a intrinsicly dynamic (multiple variables) plot and pitch it as the President was the sole hand over the economy.. Wow, take some statistics courses and learn to better adjust your facts into a nice deceivingly outrageous package.

Simple Question of Dollar Earned vs. Dollar Given

DONTREADONME Wednesday, December 3rd at 3:37PM EST (link)

I think this idea is good, let people that produce something of value and earn the money, rather than loan to corporations that may never turn a profit ever again to pay it back.

I think the earning makes the dollar more valuable then handing people money. I think that “Ducktales” video I saw the other day on I think it was reason.com says it best the difference.

However, I agree with the others here, hell is still 10,000 degrees with the smell of tourists in the air.

I agree Sgt.

I’m in Tyler, and though I initially voted for John Graves in the primary when Louie first ran for Congress, I’ve been pleased with him. He’s surprised me, and I’m glad he’s up there for us.

He grandstands sometimes, such as when he came to a local church here and spoke for twenty minutes about how all of his correspondence has “in the year of our Lord,” but I suppose all politicians are entitled to a little of that now and again.

nice to see some more fellow texans

I agree with that. He can be a little proud of himself. But he is also a normal guy when it is one-on-one with him. We have agreat Representative in Gohmert.

I will only receive two paychecks next year

bluechiplaw Wednesday, December 3rd at 4:43PM EST (link)

That will be my strategy if this passes. I’ll receive one paycheck in January for half my salary, and one in February.

But I’ll spend like a drunken sailor to make up for it!

Great plan

Elizabeth Christian Wednesday, December 3rd at 10:36PM EST (link)

I love this plan and it would be awesome if it passed but someone would have to pick up Pelosi and Harry Reid and carry them out of there and probably have a psychiatric evaluation done on them if this passes. They would lose it - I hope it sneaks through some how or another that would be awesome. I like bluechiplaw’s idea get our whole years salaries in January and February ; ) That would rock and the dems really would lose it. No wealth for them to spread around!!!

Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.
