What’s wrong with fine if you don’t do this? I know in many communities now people have to actually pay to have their trash removed. My sister in MA has to pay for these bags and those are only bags that can be on sidewalk.

Caveat: I was against the whole ordinace in th first place and that’s the problem, BUT the $ 500 part is much ado about nothing and mainly the liberal AJC trying to make a hit on conservative Gwinnett.

Since they’re putting teeth into the recycling law with up to a $500 fine (which can be levied every 24 hours a “violation exists” according to the Ordinance), it sounds like they’re planning to sock it to a lot of residents and businesses to make up for a tax shortfall.

It would also be interesting to know about the relationships that exist between the waste haulers and the people on the Board of Commissioners, now that the county is preparing to slap a $500 per day fine on people for noncompliance. Sounds like someone in the waste business is going to get a lot of new customers, courtesy of this Ordinance.

Usually the way I’ve seen it work is that the state promulgates a regulation like the “25% reduction in solid waste” law, and that sets the wheels in motion. In order to lay the groundwork for complying with that regulatory initiative, someone has to get rich! In this case that looks like it’s going to be the waste disposal companies that get approved and submit reports and pay regulatory fees to the County.

Who runs those companies?

Are they going to have people inspect the trash to make sure there are no recyclables? If they don’t do it as they pick it up, how will they identify the violator? How can they be sure who in a household did it?

Violations are going to be awfully hard to prove.

Ok, now this is just ridiculous. this would be ridiculous even for an illuminati liberal county. A fine that high for something that is supposed to voluntary, something that is more of a social choice, not a clearly and widely accepted one. We’re not all eco-conscious people who would rather sacrifice our afternoons sorting through paper bags, plastic bottles, and cans, than do… well anything.

From a county that makes the FIRST offense of a barking dog punishable by up to 3 YEARS in jail and a $1000 fine. The Soviet Socialist Republic of Gwinnett is true to form.
