Some guy named Tommy Christopher (is he the AOL writer who pretended to be John King to get on a call with John McCain so he could harass McCain?) has looked at my post on Chip Saltsman and come away convinced he must obfuscate the facts.
He quotes me thusly:
The columnist, an African-American, came up with the term and Rush Limbaugh had Paul Shanklin sing it in Al Sharpton’s voice. In the twenty years of Rush Limbaugh’s show, I venture to say there has never been a funnier parody.
There is absolutely nothing racist about the song, but the race baiters of the world love to think there is.
Then he writes:
He’s only about 100% wrong. First of all, the columnist did not come up with the term, something he would know if he had read the column.
Second, and most damningly, the song is not sung in Al Sharpton’s voice, or anything even close. Shanklin, a white “satirist,” sings the inflammatory ditty in the voice of an offensive, stereotypical caricature that sounds nothing like Sharpton. It is a pure minstrel show. Media types and Democrats may have been cowed into allowing this kind of thinly fig-leaved thing to fly, but that doesn’t make it any less foul.
I suspect this guy, who thinks I haven’t read the column in question, has not actually listened to either the song in question or much Rush Limbaugh to get it.
He writes
First of all, the columnist did not come up with the term, something he would know if he had read the column.
The column is here. Yeah, the columnist “did not come up with the term,” but he did for purposes of the song. Rush Limbaugh was inspired by the title of the guy’s column to have the song drafted. So in that sense, the guy came up with the term. The title of his column is “Obama the ‘Magic Negro’.” I’d venture to say that the majority of Americans who have heard the term had not until David Ehrenstein wrote his column.
On the other point,
the song is not sung in Al Sharpton’s voice, or anything even close. Shanklin, a white “satirist,” sings the inflammatory ditty in the voice of an offensive, stereotypical caricature that sounds nothing like Sharpton.
This AOL guy clearly has never listened to Rush Limbaugh and perhaps should stop pulling stuff out of his rectum to write about things he knows not.
1. For more than a decade, Rush Limbaugh has had ongoing parodies of Al Sharpton. They are all voiced by Shanklin in the same sound.
2. Rush introduced the song originally “as sung by Al Sharpton.”
3. There are various references in the song to it being by Al Sharpton.
4. Perhaps if the guy got over his outrage he’d recognize that Shanklin does a pretty good impression of Sharpton. Much as a caricature artist highlights particular aspects of a person’s face or persona in drawing a face, some vocal impressionists highlight various verbal ticks, pronunciations, etc. in doing vocals. Shanklin gets it perfect for Sharpton.
Maybe the AOL guy is confused because, in the song, Al is singing via a bull horn, compounding the parody.
I am used to hyperbolic lefties feeling compelled to write in an outraged manner about things to express how offended they are. But generally they try to write with a basic understanding of the facts at hand — a standard you’d think AOL would employ in its attempt to be a credible organization.
Funny: the AOL Political Machine’s motto is “cranking 24/7 to sort the spin.” By “sort the spin,” they must mean “provide boiler plate lefty talking points” because there really is nothing original or accurate in this guy’s write up.

This is a Dumb Conversation We're Having...
Section9 Tuesday, December 30th at 9:58AM EST (link)We are defending Paul Shanklin and circling the wagons around a parody that most black people would probably find offensive.
This is one of the times that Republicans got caught doing stupid things, and this was a very, very stupid thing. This incident is an eminent example of why the K-Street Republican Party needs to be
a. Horsewhipped.
b. Tarred, feathered, and run out of town on a rail.
The fact that Saltsman could do something so galactically stupid and then put both hands in the air and say, “who, me?” is only matched by the idiocy of the Base in defending him.
Thankfully, this increases the odds of good movement conservatives like Blackwell or Steele to become the RNC Chair.
Thank God. That’s the only silver lining in this incident.
Sorry Eric, but this Talmudic defense of Paul Shanklin and the Republican Party in this incident is proof that the Dems have won both the conversation and the news cycle.
Let’s not do something this stupid again, okay?

Streiff Tuesday, December 30th at 10:26AM EST (link)Isn’t “Talmudic defense” an anti-semetic comment? If it isn’t the rest of your post descends into self parody.
The notion that black political figures are off limits to parody is a rather silly notion and one that will make for a long 8 years if it is take seriously. The fact that supporters of Sharpton would be upset at a parody of Sharpton doesn’t strike me as being a real concern. After all, they haven’t instigated a fatal stabbing yet, nor have they burned now businesses run by interlopers.
I’d be the first to agree that if Saltman has no more political smarts than to not see how this was going to play out he has no business expecting us to take him seriously. On the other hand.gripping our ankles and reaching for the K-Y jelly at the first fatuous claim of racism doesn’t show any greater level of political awareness.

Why is this song becoming such an issue NOW?
Patricia_C Tuesday, December 30th at 10:01AM EST (link)The debut of this tune was on Rush’s show was seven months ago… back in late March of 2007.
I guess with all of their embarrassments, the liberals are getting a bit desperate to have something to complain about.
Don’t they realize that all of their griping has simply revived (and made even more popular) a song that had pretty much slipped off the radar?
“Even when you fall on your face, you’re still moving forward.”
Patrician, Chip Saltsman, candidate for the RNC chair, sent out over a hundred
janis Tuesday, December 30th at 10:30AM EST (link)Cd’s with this song and 40 other parodies to friends of his for Christmas. And now we have the results by having to hear the screeches of faux outrage from all the lefties over it. Thank you for your professional instincts, Chip.
I realize the song was on a CD sent out as a gift
Patricia_C Tuesday, December 30th at 10:58AM EST (link)But it isn’t like he sent the CD out as a gift BECAUSE this song is on it… and he didn’t flag the song for them as the REASON he was sending out the CD.
Until the liberals decided to make a big stink over it, this CD was being played IN PRIVATE by the recipients…
My question was…. where was the outrage when this song was playing several times a day, five days a week on a nationally syndicated radio program seven months ago?
“Even when you fall on your face, you’re still moving forward.”
I think the difference is that it was being played by an entertainer
janis Tuesday, December 30th at 11:01AM EST (link)on a radio show. This was, if you will, “endorsed” by someone who wants to be a leading light at a high level of the Republican Party. And the ongoing discussion since it happened tends to favor the view that Saltsman was an idiot for not thinking ahead to how this would be perceived by those who are always looking to find fault with Republicans.
I think it's all an excuse.
Patricia_C Tuesday, December 30th at 11:11AM EST (link)These same people who are complaining probably go home and listen to rap music that degrades whites & women and encourages drug use and the killing of cops… But an accurate parody of Reverend Al is unacceptable.
“Even when you fall on your face, you’re still moving forward.”
Of course it's an excuse. The point is, why give them one? n/t

We don't NEED to give them excuses...
Patricia_C Tuesday, December 30th at 11:45AM EST (link)They’ve become quite skilled at making them up on their own.
The song wasn’t offensive 7 months ago when anyone tuned in to Ruch could hear it… but because the song is on a CD that a republican leader gave as a gift… NOW it is offensive.
I call BS.
Of course, the liberals have no problem with Barack calling his grandmother a “typical white person” or with Oprah gloating about how proud her grandmother would be if she could see all of the “good white folk” she has working for her… And it’s funny when Joe Biden cracks jokes about needing an Indian accent to work at 7-11…
And, wasn’t Joe the one who considered it a compliment to say how clean and articulate Barack was for a black man?
And don’t even get me started on Senator Larry Byrd… or Jeremiah Wright… or Louis Farrakhan…

Defending Tommy Christopher
Socrates Tuesday, December 30th at 10:54AM EST (link)I usually like his stuff. In particular, I direct you to his seminal piece on the upcoming Presidential Balls.
On the other hand, it’s pretty lame to nitpick at for you saying that the columnist invented the term. He certainly popularized it.
And it’s also willfully stooopid not to hear Al Sharpton in the song. That is, even if you’ve never heard it before, the fact that the singer self-references as Sharpton is proof enough that the portrayal is intended to be Sharpton.
I hope this media dustup (not quite yet a kerfuffle) point out what a lousy article the original Ehrenstein thing was. He accepts circuendo the existence of a “Magic Negro” type in cinema, because there are a bunch of popular non-threatening black characters in movies, and then says that Obama is an example of that type.
The logic is:
Studios looking to fit a character into a script often chose not to portray blacks as having violent, shuck-jving, or other negative characteristics. Do you suppose they were trying not to be racist, or better, were trying to portray blacks in what they saw as a positive way? More probably, they were trying to have a believable script, and that precludes having characters who are unacceptable to the other characters.
But the reason this is an issue now is that it’s one thing for Rush to play the song before the election; it’s another for the Republican Party to do it after the election is over. Before the election, especially during the primaries, it was spot-on satire. After the election it’s just name-calling.

Ehrenstein's Magic Negro
Scope Tuesday, December 30th at 10:55AM EST (link)As I just posted on another thread, Ehrenstein is a homosexual African American. He was obviously angered at Obama for his positions on Gay’s. The original article (where this song came from) he tried to discuss how white Liberals were projecting the famous “Magic Negro” sterotype on Obama. He was mad at his fellow liberals for supporting Obama because of his own homosexuality. He also made references since then that because Obama named Warren to do the invocation at the inaugurtion, Obama is not his president. It seems that the liberal media claimed a whole different meaning to the article, as they always do, and made it into a white Republican racist issue. Mr. Ehrenstein being a flaming liberal never tried to explain his original intent, as he also believes that the Republican Party is “racist to it’s core.” It’s amazing how a story can change so drastically since it’s beginning.

EPU: I'm not kidding. TommyXtopher shows every sign of being a racist.
Martin Knight Tuesday, December 30th at 12:20PM EST (link)I mean, he probably thinks he’s not - after all, he voted for Obama, right? He’s the type I classify as non-racist in theory, but racist in practice,
From his post, it’s easy to glean that Black people are not really people to him. From his supposed outrage at the idea that Sharpton is not exempt from the usual treatment that every political figure is subjected to satirists since time immemorial, he shows every sign of not having a single black friend.
Me? I’m black and I have lots of friends from every corner of the world. One of my closest friends is from Pakistan, another is from Qatar, I was together with a girl from India for two years before we broke up, and yes, our group includes White people.
One of them, a white guy from Maine, is an amazing mimic and he always has us cracking up. He can do Obama’s voice, Jesse Jackson’s voice, Samuel L. Jackson, Apu from the Simpsons, Dubya, etc. One of the ways you know he’s comfortable around people of any racial background is the fact that no one is off-limits; White, Black, Asian, or Purple with pink polka-dots.
And oh yeah, he’s dating a girl from Sierra Leone.
To me, “consensus” seems to be the process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values and policies. So it is something in which no one believes and to which no one objects … There are still people in my party who believe in “consensus” politics. I regard them as Quislings, as traitors … I mean it.

No TommyX, this does not really help
MelZ Tuesday, December 30th at 3:12PM EST (link)Well it helps in a sense, you proved that when someone calls into question your “facts” you have to make stuff up to defend yourself. Let me explain…
In your recent article, in order to try and “defend” yourself and your previous writing you completely fabricated Erick’s.
The article for which we are commenting right now has one point and one point only, that being…the article TommyX wrote is without factual content. Erick proves this point by making two supporting arguements.
1) Concerning who gets cred for “coining” the term magic negro. You state Erick is wrong in rediting a columnist, he refutes you by saying…he was giving cred to the columnist who brought the term into this election…or this century for that matter.
2) Concerning Al Sharpton. You state in your previous article that the song is in fact not sung by a Sharpton impersonator. Erick refutes your “fact” with the fact that it is in fact suppose to be Sharpton….he further supports this fact with supporting information ie Rush, etc.
So, now instead of admitting that you were wrong….because the singer is suppose to be Al Sharton (which btw add to the humor of the parody) you claim that Erick is defending the song by saying “it is okay because it is suppose to be Al Sharpton”. Your article has gone from ignorant of facts to complete lies.
I don’t see above where Erick tried to defend the parody song by saying it’s okay because it is suppose to be the Reverend. He simply states that while you claim it is not…it in fact is.
The article written by Erick was neither defending nor condemning the song, but instead refuting your article for the factless piece that it was. I can’t see how you took his statement of Sharpton -proof to mean defense due to Sharpton.
Thanks for trying though.
MelZ

OK, I've officially had enough....
Susannah Saturday, January 3rd at 4:02PM EST (link)This has gotten ridiculous. For starters, as I’ve previously stated in another thread, Saltsman gave this CD as a private gift. It had 41 tracks on it and he probably forgot that “Barack The Magic Negro” was even on the CD.
Second of all, the song was a parody of a column by LA Times reporter, David Ehrenstein, in which he referred to Obama as a “Magic Negro”. I happen to think that Erhenstein’s column was tad offensive and stupid; however, I had no problem with Rush making a parody of Erhenstein’s column. But, what’s really mind boggling to me, is that neither the original column, nor the parody by Rush, generated much outrage at the time. However, now, some Republican official (Chip Saltsman) giving a CD that contains the Shanklin parody of the Ehrenstein column (along with 40 other tracks) is somehow way out of bounds? Gimme a break. This is ridiculous!
http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-ehrenstein19mar19,0,5335087.story
Third of all, are everyone’s Christmas gifts, from now on out, going to undergo this much scrutiny (or just conservative’s gifts), because I didn’t get the memo. Like say, for instance, can a liberal politician give his friends a subscription to The New Yorker, or would that be considered racist because The New Yorker did have a cover several months ago that some people thought was offensive (even though they were just trying to PARODY the whole “Obama is a secret Muslim” nonsense–link is below)? Can I give someone a DVD of John Stewart parodies, even though he did have one with a character called “The Race Genie” making fun of Bob Herbert falsely accusing the McCain campaign of racism (with the “Paris and Britney ads”) and of Obama with his “Dollar bills” comment–or would I be called a “racist” if I tried to run for office later? Oh, and can I give my friends a DVD of Saturday night live parodies, even though one of the parodies shows Al Sharpton getting shocked by a dog collar (link is below), or would someone call me a “racist” for that if I tried to run for office later? I’m sorry, but I don’t want to have to scrutinize my private Christmas gifts to friends and family members, for fear of being called a “racist” by some holier than thou, race-baiting weasel.

http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/clips/tv-funhouse-the-obama-files/229108/
And finally, Obama publicly admitted to having Ludacris on his IPOD, and Ludacris even wrote an extremely offensive song calling Hillary a b***h and saying that John McCain should be paralyzed, and we’re obsessing about “Barack the Magic Negro”? Please! Obama was a presidential candidate and is, now, the President-elect (not some party official), and he admitted to listening to a guy who regularly uses the words “b***h”, and “ho” to refer to women, not to mention, the n-word–and that’s OK. However, Saltsman (a party official–not a presidential candidate) privately gives his friends a Paul Shanklin CD (Shanklin is not even in the same ballpark as Ludacris) with one track making fun of an offensive column, and all hell breaks lose?! The hypocrisy of this whole situation makes my head want to explode. I can’t believe that we’ve even been suckered into playing along with this.

The fact is that Saltsman did NOT show bad judgment, as Erick said, and having made that “admission” against interest, fatally disabled him from being a credible advocate for the truth going forward.
Gamecock filled the void tonight on Unusable Signal.
It wasn’t hard. Why?
Because Gamecock doesn’t fear the PC police.
This matters

Lets be honest, starting with GC. I was ALONE last weekend
Mike gamecock DeVine Saturday, January 3rd at 1:40AM EST (link)defending Rush, the Shanklin Parody and Saltsman. And it hurt. So, it hurts even more that Erick gets attacked for defending same AFTER I did, unapologetically. In fact, I took on Erick and you all for NOT recognizing the bigger issue of the parody and Rush and the SUBSTANCE of same as bigger than Saltsman/Duncan.
I was attacked here at Redstate.
But tonight, it was Gamecock that defended Erick and Redstate.

Uh, excuse....
Susannah Saturday, January 3rd at 3:22AM EST (link)GC, you were not completely alone last week. I had your back (in two different threads). Remember?

Smile.
Suziguci - you came close
Mike gamecock DeVine Saturday, January 3rd at 4:52AM EST (link)But you did begin your comment with the caveat that Saltsman may have made a mistake, and that matters. I am not condemning you for that, but I am praising me for not saying that.
I was alone for 48 hours plus on the pure arguement, and I think that I deserve to me the martyr, and that Erick does not. I even called out Erick for his caveats.
For 48 hours I was vilified by regulars at Redstate who insisted on echoeing libs that Saltsman showed bad judgment.
He didn’t.
And beginning on Monday, we began to hear prominent conservatives echo me.
And I feel good now.
And come this Monday, THE MAN himself will speak.

GC appreciates Suziguci's support last week, but
Mike gamecock DeVine Saturday, January 3rd at 5:03AM EST (link)on one crucial fact, I stood alone until at least 6 am Monday and that is
There is nothing wrong with sending ANYTHING Rush has ever said or played on his show to anyone.
Period.
Ken Blackwell got it.
Gamecock got it immediately, instinctively, with ZERO caveats.
And I was sick most of the weekend because no one joined me at redstate.
But am I happy now, after 5 days of having major conservatives coming around and esp after Erick gets attacked as a racist, LIKE I SAID HE WOULD even when he added the PC police caveat about Saltsman’s judgment, and esp after winning the argument against liberals on BTRadio tonight?
Hell yeah.

MANY THANKS TO GAMECOCK
George Claghorn Saturday, January 3rd at 3:04AM EST (link)Quite simply, Mike, you rock.
I was listening to the show. Tommy was completely flabbergasted that you dared to call him out on his own turf.
He started making up stories about how drunk you were to distract from your argument.
But you didn’t let it get to you. And now he wants you to co-host a special show him as the conservative voice.
Way to go, Mike. On behalf of everyone at Redstate, thank you sincerely for defending us.
GO GAMECOCK!

For those of you who struggle with what goes on, who see retreat and capitulation, and who feel like not just your political opponents, but those who hold dear all those things you hold as blasphemous — be cheerful. Be happy. Victory is already yours.
You must just have the courage to not get discouraged and have the will to fight on.” – Erick Erickson at RightOnline
Thank you brother, and your affirmation means so much
Mike gamecock DeVine Saturday, January 3rd at 4:54AM EST (link)God bless
Your affirmation will make it much easier for me to endure the additional vilification that I expect tomorrow
here.
for shame
