We know the Presidential election.

But what other stories do you think were big this year?

What's the real story between Gov. Sanford and the unemployment

Achance Wednesday, December 31st at 1:08PM EST (link)

commission in SC? Somebody, GC?, who knows SC politics know the back story on this? I can’t see the Gov. letting 77K people miss their UI checks unless there’s something good and juicy underneath it.

Every time I read a story like this, it makes me glad we have the pure appointee structure for most of our government. We don’t have any elected agency heads on only a couple of commissions with real governing power. In what I know of this one, if the Alaska head of the unemployment unit told the Governor he wouldn’t agree to an audit, he’d be unemployed before he could finish the sentence.

the big story of year is that Packers doesn't have to worry about Favre anymore!

Cheetah772 Wednesday, December 31st at 1:21PM EST (link)

Isn’t it great for Packers fans that we have a real franchise QB in Aaron Rodgers?! In his first year as the starting QB, he has passed for over 4,000 yards, 25 TDs with 4 rushing TDs, just 13 interceptions, and a 94 rating! Oh my…what a surprise when he fell into our laps when Packers picked him with 24th pick in 2005….

Brett Favre who? He once agian leds NFL with 22 interceptions and only 21 TDs…

I’ll bet you Packers will be going to Super Bowl next year. Watch out for Rodgers and Co.! :)

All of that?

And somehow he still managed to miss the playoffs.

Yup, that’s improvement for you.

Aaron Rodgers can’t play defense. You’ll note that Brett Fav-uh-re is sitting at home as well, but that’s mostly his fault for throwing a ton of ints this year. The Packers defense seemed to take the year off, though not nearly as bad as my Broncos’ _efense.

I’d have to say Rogers was an awesome surprise. What a huge talent. I expect him to only get better the next few years as he gains experience. The future looks bright for the cheeseheads.

Because he is the answer to ever significant question. And I don’t mean his ill-fated presidential run.

I mean, Fred Thompson has become this generation’s magnet that draws all conservatism to a central point. You may think I am kidding, but I am not. Not since the 1994 incarnation of Newt have we had a person who is the focal point of conservatism.

I actually think the two biggest

kowalski Wednesday, December 31st at 1:43PM EST (link)

I actually think the two biggest stories of the year had a lot to do with robotics and technology. I’m not talking about social networking sites, although those were important:

I’m talking about the almost unqualified success of the USAF in using unmanned drones armed with missiles at standoff distances against terrorists.

And secondly,

The very very unwelcome counterpart to this use, which is going to be mileage taxes on automobile usage based on satellite and GPS technology.

To me, those are the two most important stories of the year.

The third most important is how the overreliance on mathematical models of risk allowed the entire financial system of finance capitalism to implode.

Computer modeling is never, ever going to be a substitute for common-sense thinking: lending money to people who cannot pay it back can never again serve as the basis for securitized debt obligations. And while credit-debt swaps may have initially freed up previously moribund capital, they did so at a profound and almost unrecognized level of risk.

The common assumption in both of these mistaken ventures is that things will always go up. They won’t. And nobody should ever believe again that they will.

The fourth most important story of the year

kowalski Wednesday, December 31st at 1:45PM EST (link)

Is the level to which the public is finally coming to realize that the dire predictions of anthropogenic global warming catastrophe are based on computer models that have no more inherent reliability (not to mention all of the bad and debatable measurement input data) are no more reliable than the models being used by the people on Wall Street to calculcate risk.

And probably less so.

And the fifth most important story

kowalski Wednesday, December 31st at 1:59PM EST (link)

And the fifth most important story is the continuing action of gun-grabbers across the United States to restrict private ownership of firearms despite the mountains of evidence that more guns in the hands of responsible citizens = less crime.

Everyone in the United States should be licensed to own a firearm, even if they don’t actually own one. The D.C. vs Heller decision affirmed it as your right, and everyone should defend it as such.

How about the continuing drip drip drip of bad news about nationalized health care?

The grieving widow of a man who died after a six-hour wait at an A&E department has demanded answers from a hospital trust.

Stewart Fleming, 37, arrived at his local hospital with his wife Sarah clutching an urgent note from his doctor saying he must be treated immediately.

But instead of being sent to the head of the queue, Mr Fleming had to sit and wait in agony as a virus ravaged his body, causing his organs to fail.

Looking back, I want to thank Erick, Neil and the “faceless Directors” for getting RS3 up and running. And especially thank Neil (as I’m sure EPU would agree) for his excellent work with the RecList.

Looking forward to 2009 and hoping that Republicans will find spines, a small government philosophy and the willingness to fight 24/7. I’ll miss Dick Cheney and … nobody else.

Hopes for Condi Rice to be NFL Commissioner (so we don’t have to talk about her POTUS candidacy anymore), and maybe a Senate run for John Bolton. And sincere hopes that we never hear the names Mike Duncan or Chip Saltsman again.

The Secretary of State Project

zuiko Wednesday, December 31st at 11:32PM EST (link)

I guess it’s paying off for them now.

The man overseeing the Senate recount, Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, was also endorsed by Acorn, and his election campaign in 2006 was funded in part by something called “The Secretary of State Project.” This latter group, founded by MoveOn.org’s former grass-roots director, exists solely to install far-left candidates as secretaries of state in swing states.
