What does it mean to be “Hispanic” these days?
Apparently the Portugese Supreme Court Justice Bejamin Cardozo is not hispanic, but Sotomayor, who descends from Puerto Rico, an American Colony, is.
Are Brazilians hispanic? Doesn’t seem like it, despite Brazilians being Portuguese and Portugal being on the Iberian Peninsula — which in Roman times was “Hispania”.
Miguel Estrada somehow was an insult to hispanicdom and had his life ripped to shreds so they could keep the supposed “first latino” seat warm for Sotomayor. (And, in all seriousness here, what is the difference between “hispanic” and “latino”?)
Mel Martinez loves to paste on his thick latino accent when talking liberal talk about immigration issues, but somehow Rubio doesn’t make the cut as a true hispanic.
I am confused.

it is confusing Erick, I have discussed this
Doc Holliday Friday, May 29th at 11:18PM EDT (link)before and have heard Gordon Liddy discuss it a few times.
First of all, the word itself basically means “of Spain”. Ironically, if you are a Spaniard, from the country of Spain, you are considered white of European descent, so you are not “hispanic”. Since there are few real Spaniards living here, probably in the area of 1 percent of the Spanish speaking population, I guess it does not matter if Spaniards are considered hispanic or not, meaning the modern term hispanic of course.
It seems one is considered hispanic if they are natives of Spanish speaking countries in the Western Hemisphere. Of course there is no race of Hispanics as they can be black, white, or pretty much any color. If there had to be some qualifying racial standard, you would have to have some amount of Native American or African blood. I have heard white europeans from Argentina and Chile are not considered to be hispanic or Latino by others who claim that designation.
I don’t see how someone from Brazil could be hispanic, unless you consider Portugal is part of Iberia. Maybe Portuguese are Iberic lol. I would say Dominicans are Hispanic though not the Haitian’s that share the same Island, as they don’t speak Spanish.
Anyway, that basically sums it up. This is not my opinion, this is what those who use the term in America think. Obviously there is no Hispanic race, it is just a wide ranging group with some similarities, mostly a common language.
BTW, even though Hispanic Latinos are called Spanish a million times a day in this country, they are not Spanish. If they are Spanish because they speak that language, we are English, since
we speak English.
See how much easier this would be if everyone in this country considered themselves to be Americans?

exitsfunnel Saturday, May 30th at 12:46AM EDT (link)I think that in it’s current sense, Hispanic refers to any peoples of Spanish speaking origin. Who has suggested that Rubio doesn’t qualify as Hispanic? Aren’t his parents Cuban?

I believe the US Census...
AHL Saturday, May 30th at 9:10AM EDT (link)defines “Hispanic” as an ethnicity, independant of race. This is why you hear so much about white hispanic vs non-White hispanic.
From wikipedia:
The Census Bureau defines “Hispanic or Latino” as “a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race.”

its_a_right_wing_thing Saturday, May 30th at 10:36AM EDT (link)Erick,
First off, what these RedStaters are telling you is correct. I’d agree with Doc Holliday’s evaluation but you can’t argue with the wiki definition.
A Hispanic would be a term used to describe a person’s identity, one which is centered around a Latin or Spain origin and culture.
I however, see all these terms, Hispanic, Latina, Chicana, as purposeful confusing words to keep “Gringos” out of the loop. The less we know, the better as far as I see it and that is what I believe the other side wants us to adop so they purposely keep updating the terms so we feel guilty and are forced to use them just to fit in.
This way, they can tell their story, like Sotomayor’s life story from Puerto Rico and we just have to sit back dumb listening knowing we can’t even contribute to the conversation since we are largely if not exclusively ignorant of their culture and their desired terminology. Democrats “correct” ability to use these terms interchangably shows their “compassion” “dedication” and “commitment” which swings voters and their loyalties.
It makes us look bad which they can use against us, being the stereotypical clueless xenophobic party and the Democratic party as the party of hope, change, and diversity. Its a perfect political ploy.
To me, “Hispanic” is just the latest; a polite, more socially-acceptable classy way of upgrading the latest PC term to the Latin culture similar to the ways ethnic terms evolved for “African Americans” over the years and have now become common place and the PC police expect us to use them in our vernacular the same way we now describe the other cultures.
Thanks for the Estrada reminder as I had forgot all about that. No mention of Cardozo either but the MSM isn’t going to report on that as they want to champion the Bronx/immigrant sappy storyline which the masses will eat right up as a success/empowerment story of the American Dream. it will help them in 2010.
The court was diversified in my opinion, just for the sake of being diversified with no merit. The One had a mandate to make it more representative of the U.S. and the heck with the qualifications. Expect the next nominee to be either an ACORN affiliate, a member of Black Liberation Theology out of the Chicago Machine, or a Black Muslim. Those are my predictions.
Jay Nordlinger makes a very interesting observation about "Hispanic"
olsmithie Sunday, May 31st at 12:16AM EDT (link)“An interesting word, and concept, “Hispanic.” I have many Cuban-American friends, in South Florida and elsewhere. They rarely call themselves Hispanic, and they, in turn, are rarely called Hispanic. Why? Well, it’s kind of a political term, isn’t it? It relates to the grievance culture, to affirmative action, to apartness. “Hispanic” is not so much E pluribus unum as “diversity” and “multiculturalism.” “Hispanic” is for those who don’t want to melt into the pot.”
That about sums it up!
