LifeLock Emails RedState

[UPDATE]: From comments, it is reported that Embassy Suites is likewise disavowing any direct relationship with the David Letterman show. – Moe Lane

With calls to boycott David Letterman’s sponsors firing up over his suggesting Sarah Palin’s 13 year old daughter be raped, we have received an email from Lifelock, one of the targeted sponsors. See below:

From: Jason Ovitt
Date: June 11, 2009 10:51:57 AM EDT
To: RedState Contact
Subject: In accurate information propagated on your blog

At no time has LifeLock ever sponsored David Letterman or any other national CBS talk show. It is possible, however, that depending on where you live that your local station inserted one of our advertisements into an open slot. We have no control what these stations do with the open slot or where the station places our approved advertisement.

I would like to assure you again, that we have no affiliation with Mr. Letterman’s show.

Sincerely,
Jason

The corporate suits are passing the buck to the local stations. So what should we do?

    1. Tell the corporate suits not to advertise on local stations which carry Lecherman until he delivers a no-excuses apology to the Palins.

    2. Contact your local See-BS affiliate. You know what to say.

The sponsors are wetting their undies already, and this thing has just begun.

I just received this in my inbox in response to an e-mail to Embassy Suites.

“Thank you for your email. Embassy Suites is not a sponsor or advertiser of the David Letterman show. Several online ads appeared on a series of web sites, including cbs.com, among many others. These ads have since been taken down. The appearance of the ads on the CBS network web site does not suggest we condone or agree with Mr. Letterman’s views or comments.

    We sincerely appreciate your email.”

Just got off the phone with my local CBS affiliate. They tried to deflect me to the main CBS site. The local channels ARE responsible for what goes on their airwaves. So, file an FCC complaint, promise a boycott and DEMAND a real apology and a publlic rebuke from the CBS suits. Mention Imus, that seems to scare the he** out of the local affilates.

…from my company account, telling them we are no longer booking with them for buisness travel (which we have in the past, no more).

    Their response.

Thank you for your email concerning Best Western advertising on
television. We apologize for your dissatisfaction.
We appreciate you taking the time to write and thank you for your
    comments.
Best Western International is not affiliated with any network channel,
or programs shown. Advertising time is purchased through a media agency,
    not the actual network.
We at Best Western are aware that every traveler has many choices
available when selecting accommodations. We are honored you chose Best
Western, and we will continue to do our best to be worthy of your
    selection.
    Thank you

and tell them if they didn’t buy time on local stations which air Letterman, I wouldn’t have to deprive them of my business.

    But that’s just me.

it is not necessarily the “broader point” we should take away from his comments that he meant….

He meant, and to be fair, he is correct with slot advertising. Ads can be Local Station, National sponsor Broadcast level, Slot Ads [meant to be inexpensive and/or progressive pricing time-slot rotations], cross-network/stations even if down with specific TV service providers, etc…. He may be technically correct in his comment and that it is NOT LifeLock’s intent to ever be amongst Advertisers… HOWEVER, it is THEIR CHOICE in how they choose to spend their advertising money (they may NOT have ever intended any Ad show up on CBS) but the CONSEQUENCE of their Advertising strategy DID YIELD THAT HAPPENSTANCE!!! They ARE NOT, therefore, immune from criticism and boycott…. If they want to be away from the “Controversial” shows they need to “Target Advertise” even though it is more expensive!

The “Broader point” that I elluded to is: ANY/ALL Advertisers that show up at just about any time or place on CBS is a legitimate target for the scorn so we can ensure they pressure their Advertising departments/agencies to AVOID DL and related shows that go way over the liine like this by employing better Advertising tactics. THEY ARE NOT EXCUSED because they specifically DO NOT work their Advertising so as to avoid DL and/or CBS in their Contracts! They can spend more and steer clear and have our business or be cheaper in their Ad budgets and run the risk and deal with our avoiding their products/services.

Again, bottom line is, LifeLock is NOT EXCUSED!

that is the addition part of the bottom line…. so do NOT entirely let LifeLock off the hook (as I’ve read elsewhere)…. Just “adjust” the message knowing what I laid out above and that their Ad did run due to their Ad strategy and therefore they ARE ON THE HOOK (to some degree) STILL and that WE expect them to contact CBS and the DL Show and let them know how “displeased” they are to be fielding our calls because of DL’s patheticness.

  • http://www.ssce.net/Web-Articles/Web-articles-indexed-authors.html#authors-l JLenardDetroit

very good point well worth repeating over and over and over…. The situations were different (not gonna re-hash it all, wish I had a link to the other discussion on it) but IMUS was nuked (mainly because of the RACE-baiting) but these comments of DL’s were DIRECTLY AIMED at individuals and one being an underage-female (Ruetgers team were ALL ADULTS, though young) while Imus’ remarks were off-hand general reaction to what Bernie said… DL’s remarks wer 100% PRE-MEDITATED (pre-written, probably run thru in rehearsal, etc…) each and every one of those SEPERATE jabs they took!!!

Let CBS know we want a SUSPENSION at least!!!!!

  • DamnCat

LifeLock, Best Western, et. al. had better tell their media buyers what show NOT to book thier ads on, hadn’t they?

Sorry fellas, we don’t care HOW you buy the time – onlt whether you DO or DO NOT.

ugh… let’s be sensible folks… I know some people don’t know how some advertising works but geez….. A Rep Gov Assoc Ad showing up at DL website is probably a GoogleAd (or other such traffic engine) that is KEYWORD RELATED!!!! Is it a surprise to ANYONE? that the word PALIN is popping up in DL site traffic to/from the site and that “PALIN” would be a KEYWORD attached to the Rep Gov Assoc????? Hence the Ad showing up.

Don’t know what I mean, see the link Josh gave and read comments
