During the Clinton years, Newt Gingrich and Ken Starr were household names vilified as Republican Torquemadas. During the Bush years, the Democrats turned the Republicans into the party of Trent Lott, Tom DeLay, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, and Mark Foley. It was this type of politics that candidate Barack Obama campaigned to end. In fact, Obama was often quoted saying we need to get away from ideology and work together. But that must have been the teleprompters talking. Not yet into his first hundred days in office, Barack Obama and his political advisors have proven themselves to be a most ideologically liberal administration practicing the politics of personal destruction against anyone who dares to challenge them — even their own. They would have us believe they are defending the country from Rush Limbaugh, Congressman Eric Cantor, and a relatively unknown private citizen named Rick Scott.
Sustained attacks on character as proxies for assaults on policy are a consistent left-wing construct. Conservatives have lately pointed out these attacks are derived from Rules for Radicals, the book written by leftist agitator Saul Alinsky, of whom both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are students. Alinsky wrote “the greatest enemy of individual freedom is the individual himself” and encouraged radicals to “go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions. (This is cruel, but very effective. Direct, personalized criticism and ridicule works.)”
That Barack Obama would participate in attacks against Rush Limbaugh and Eric Cantor shows how much a student of the left he is. In less than one hundred days, Barack Obama has proven himself to be the most ideological President in American history — far more ideological than his predecessor who dabbled in liberal pablum like “No Child Left Behind” and the prescription drug benefit. Obama has yet to propose and pursue any policy that is not a bedrock leftist idea. Use of the word “and” is necessary because Obama tends to propose some moderate policies, but he only pushes for those on the left.
As Barack Obama and his left-wing allies push left, they rely heavily on leftist agitprop and character assassination to obfuscate issues and distract from their policy objectives. Ben Smith, writing in the Politico, tells us Barack Obama’s allies meet every morning by conference call at 8:45 a.m. to build their talking points. The calls operate as a left-wing character assassination squad run by John Podesta of the Center for American Progress (“CAP”). Podesta was also Co-Chairman of the Obama-Biden Transition Project. In addition, CAP’s political wing runs a website called Think Progress, which coordinates online messaging among leftwing bloggers.
The character assassinations began less than a week after Barack Obama moved into the White House. Obama told Congressional Republicans “You can’t just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done”. John Podesta then attacked Limbaugh, distorting Limbaugh’s statement the he wanted Obama to fail if Obama a socialist agenda. Next, Americans United for Change ran advertisements declaring Rush Limbaugh the “real leader” of the Republican Party.
After attacking Limbaugh, Barack Obama and his minion turned their sights on Congressman Eric Cantor, the highly effective Republican Whip. Patrick O’Connor, writing at the Politico, noted, “At last month’s White House summit on entitlement reform, Obama painted Cantor as a poster child for obstructionism.” Anti-semitic attacks, which started when Cantor was named a potential Vice Presidential nominee in 2008, have returned in the form of robo-calls in Virginia. In 2008, the attacks, featured on the Democratic National Committee’s website, stated that “both [Jack] Abramoff and Cantor are Jewish.” The new attacks hit both Cantor and his wife. Americans United for Change ran advertisements tying Cantor to Rush Limbaugh.
The Politico, earlier this year, ran two articles about coordination between White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, James Carville, Paul Begala, and ABC News’s George Stephanopoulos. One article noted the four trade regular phone calls. Emanuel told the Politico the calls “are about what’s happening, what the implications are of what’s happening and what’s going on.” Another alluded to Carville, Begala, and Emanuel working to turn Limbaugh into a target. Shortly after Obama picked fights with Limbaugh and Cantor, Stephanopoulos reported Cantor had “repudiated” Limbaugh on This Week. In fact, Stephanopoulos had selectively quoted his interview with Cantor to make the case — leaving out that Cantor had actually reiterated Rush Limbaugh’s key points from Rush’s now famous CPAC speech.
Conservatives are not the only targets. Americans United for Change and MoveOn.org attacked Democratic Senators Evan Bayh and Mark Pryor after both expressed reservations about the White House budget. The groups have become what one reporter called “the White House’s chief third-party operation.”
Now Obama’s minion have begun attacking private citizens. Obama promised to lower healthcare costs. His preferred policy is to drive up private healthcare costs so public healthcare looks cheaper in comparison. Rick Scott, the former President and CEO of Columbia/HCA, founded Conservatives for Patients’ Rights to defend the free market healthcare system from the White House’s policy prescription. Instead of attacking his arguments or advancing their own arguments, the left coordinated an attack against Mr. Scott personally. The coordination began on one of Mr. Podesta’s 8:45 a.m. calls.
On March 3, 2009, Jonathan Cohn wrote at the New Republic that Scott is “public enemy number one.” Ezra Klein, who also coordinates attacks against the right with journalists on a private email list, then took to the American Prospect to attack Scott for business practices at HCA. Two days later, John Podesta, on Fox News, tried dodging a question Rick Scott had raised about the costs of Obama’s program by smearing Scott. On March 11th, Christopher Hayes parroted his left-wing brethren at the Nation writing, “Having Scott lead the charge against healthcare reform is like tapping Bernie Madoff to campaign against tighter securities regulation.”
As his record in both the Illinois General Assembly and U.S. Senate showed, Barack Obama has yet to deviate from his leftist ideological underpinnings. To distract the still center-right American public from an agenda he refused to discuss with them in detail on the campaign trail, Barack Obama has personally revived what Bill Clinton called “the politics of personal destruction.” While many conservatives talk, often eloquently and truthfully about Obama taking us down the road to socialism, his coordinated character assassination campaign against anyone who disagrees with him strikes of Soviet style politics. Saul Allinsky would be proud.

Hera Tuesday, June 16th at 10:18AM EDT (link)The lefts ideas like the “stimulus” don’t work and are opposed by the American people. So its not surprising they would have to attack opponents personally to distract from their own failure.
What do you propse?
briann Tuesday, June 16th at 10:30AM EDT (link)What can be done to return this country to where it belongs?
1) Maintain the “high road” and refrain from the personal attacks. This was McCain’s strategy in ‘08. We have to hope that the American people will eventually see ad hominem attacks as logically flawed.
2) Match the agitation. It is possible that we could get nastier/funnier personal attacks and take back the country. With the current media environment this will be exceedingly difficult, and it will likely lead the left to go to option #3.
3) Escalate the conflict. This is the territory of Bill Ayers and the Wethermen. I don’t think anyone wants to go there.
The only real hope for America is for the public to wise up and stop voting against who the MSM tells the funniest/nastiest jokes about.

The reason the left gets away with it is because they pay no price for it…we used their tactics against them in the 90s and won…that’s why the pissing and moaning from Democrats began after the 1994 campaign and continued in the 96 campaign about the loss of civility in Washington and the lack of decorum in the Senate blah blah blah…
We hoisted them on their own Petards and they squealed like stuck pigs.
Contrast that with the Bush years and the 2008 campaign when they’ve been allowed to do it un-challenged…They won in 2006 attacking a politics of corruption as represented by the Republican leadership despite the same number of Dems under investigations and the Republicans were silent.,…now we have even more Democrats under ethical clouds and there is deafening silence for the Republican Parties.
Why can’t we run on the politics of corruption as exhibited by William Jefferson, Chris Dodd, Charlie Rangle, Nancy Pelosi and on and on?
Oh yeah…we can’t do that because we might offend the moderates and independents we’re trying to persuade!

Spot On. It's the Chicago Way or Oblivion.
farstar99 Tuesday, June 16th at 11:14AM EDT (link)When you’re playing for keeps, you either play the same game the opposition plays, or they end you.
For instance, try reasoning with a pit bull when you want to take its dinner. Tell one of the Chicago Mafia who put Obama into office that while you respect them, you’re not going to give your business to them. I’ll send your widow flowers.
In other words, see how far any of that gets you.

farstar99 Tuesday, June 16th at 11:09AM EDT (link)1. The High Road lost us the election. It leads to failure. Especially when there is no justice, and when the press is just a propaganda mill for the enemy.
2. Match the agitation. That takes money and energy, neither of which the RNC “leadership” seems interesting in fostering.
3. When one side does all the escalating, the other side doesn’t escalate. It merely fights back, at a level that makes survival possible. If it does not then escalate beyond that, it perishes. We’re not even doing the fighting back part adequately yet.
Actually, I'm Quite Fine With Escalating...

Thugs at a dinner party.
Achance Tuesday, June 16th at 11:43AM EDT (link)Chairman Mao famously said, “A Revolution is not a dinner party.” Whether or not people want to actually face it, the people running this Country know a lot more about Mao and revolutions than they know about dinner parties. Obama’s oft-remarked boorishness is common for this sort; they refuse to behave well in polite company just to show that polite company how little respect they have for notions of polite and for the company. Think Saul Alinskys tactic of having all his followers gather for a bean dinner before going to public meetings.
Unfortunately, those fat, avuncular, slickly coiffed old men running the Republican Party know all about dinner parties. They just don’t know anything about people who come to dinner parties for the sole purpose of stinking up the place. Comrade Obama’ thugs don’t give a damn about this Country and really don’t care if the stimulus stimulates or Obamacare insures the uninsured. If Comrade Obama says the stimulus has stimulated the state-controlled media will parrot what he says and the economy will have been stimulated and we will go from having the worst economy since the Great Depression to have fully recovered from the Bush Disaster Years. It’s only your lying eyes seeing your neighbor out of work. All it will take is a few speeches about how everyone wanting work is working and how the out of work are just malcontents who don’t believe in the changes in today’s workplace and society. Reality will be what Comrade Obama says it is. The important thing about the Stimulus package was that it stimulated Comrade Obama’s political infantry, the non-profits and the unions, the rest is just scraps to keep the lumpen proletariat hoping.
In any event, most of the posts in this thread are along the lines of “what to do?” I don’t know, though I have some ideas and some experience with conflict with Alinsky disciples. What I do know is that there is almost nobody in the officeholder and leadership cohort of the Republican Party who has shown one scintilla of skill or understanding in dealing with well-trained communist operatives. I don’t even know who “we” is any more. I don’t think “we” is the Republican Party as we know it if “we” are talking about rising from the ashes. The dinner party culture in which leaders are cultured in the Republican Party simply does not produce the kind of people who can deal with truly nasty people; they can’t even stand to be around people who are on their side and who can be nasty.
Among the first posts in response to this would normally be somebody admonishing me that we can’t lose our souls and sink to their level and how two wrongs don’t make a right and all that stuff from the dinner party days. We have a simple choice: we can have a dinner party and sit at our linen covered table and wait for the thugs to crash through the door and the comrade from ACORN will tell us how many people are going to be living in our houses put us on TV to apologize to the people for the wastefulness and greed exhibited by all that opulence at our dinner party. Or, we can learn how to deal with thugs and, if necessary be thugs ourselves from time to time.

Well said...
Stephen Halsey Tuesday, June 16th at 1:00PM EDT (link)I think we all know what we have to do….it’s that we have all been too principled in our upbringing to fight in the manner that may be necessary to win. It was said here on occasion during the campaign when it was clear that Obama was playing to win and McCain was playing nice and many commentors wondered why the GOP wasn’t fighting harder, esp. given all of the ammunition that Obama had given us. It should come as no surprise that Obama is practicing what he learned growing up and what he practiced for years in Chicago. I’m just glad that moderators here are finally willing to post about it.
But……it would have been more profound to have pushed the Ayers, Aliinsky, Wright, Frank Marshall Davis connections last fall when it really mattered. Yet those connections were routinely dismissed as fringe issues with the focus more on policy issues. However, when there was very little spoken policy difference between what Obama was saying and what McCain was saying (at least that’s what the MSM watching masses heard…), then the ‘fringe’ issues needed to be pushed front and center. Do you think if people really knew that Obama hung out daily ‘reading poetry’ with Frank Marshall Davis, or taught Alinsky tactics at Alinsky’s Chicago institute or had close relationships with domestic terrorists or sought out Marxist professors in college that even 30% of the public would have voted for this Marxist?
Bottomline is that this was all out in the open for people to see and what he’s doing now should come as no surprise. And the GOP’s response (or lack thereof) should come as no surprise either.
The Left plays for keeps.
They play to win.
The GOP seems more interested in catering to the middle and moderate squishes. This has to stop and if the American people, with the aid of the GOP leadership don’t wake up soon, they are going to be very surprised at just how far Obama and the Left are willing to go to implement their vision of a Marxist utopia. Just look around at every country where Marxism has been tried and it always ends badly, with death and bloodshed. Like Achance said above, our tactics must change, even if it gets unpleasant or even seemingly unprincipled. Playing to win doesn’t mean you have to forego principles. It can also mean that you believe in your principles enough to wage a vicious war to defeat the enemy. And right now the Left is our, and more importantly, this country’s enemy.
Think back to WWII and how we chose to end our engagement with Japan. Do you think any less of us because we dropped two atomic bombs, killing thousands and thousands of innocent Japanese civilians? In war there will be, and sometimes must, be collateral damage. You have to break the will of the people in order to win. That’s what happened with the Japanese. And it’s what must happen to the Left. They must know crystal clear that we will use every means necessary to fight them and defeat them. Remember, numbers don’t lie. Some 40% of American’s identify themselves as ‘conservative’ while 20% viewed themselves as ‘liberal’. The numbers are in our favor and I think we’d have even more support if the people saw that we had real fight in us. Look at the groundswell that forced that buck-toothed, no-talent hack at CBS to apologize…..twice. Many on the Left are bullies and it’s a well-known Alinksy tactic to portray more power than you actually have. This is an Alinsky rule that the GOP and conservatives must exploit because the numbers are on our side.
The future of our country depends on it.
Hit hard. Hit fast. Hit often.

This is the single most important aspect of our problem
johnCV Tuesday, June 16th at 3:49PM EDT (link)We must acknowledge -right now, from this day forward, that the Left is our enemy, not our opponent. If we believe that the Constitution is the only document that this country is founded upon, that our traditional values are the glue that holds this society together, and that the rule of law applies to everyone equally, well, then we must adapt any tactic to prevail. Sounds harsh, but there it is. We are battling an enemy that has adopted this strategy for decades and has no qualms about destroying the children of thier enemies ( all the while bemoaning the ‘politics of personal destruction’).
Anything less than this will result in our failure and the destruction of this country.
Look what Palin did to Letterman.
Section9 Tuesday, June 16th at 12:26PM EDT (link)Not only did she fight back against an Alinsky style attack, her supporters were mobilized to go after his sponsors.

Why the RNC isn’t going after the Inspector General issue hammer and tong is a huge mystery-you can probably put it down to general incompetence.

“At last month’s White House summit on entitlement reform, Obama painted Cantor as a poster child for obstructionism.”
This coming from the party of obstructionism? The first two and last two tears of the ‘Bush Administration’ were dominated by the Party of Pelosi and their stranglehold in Congress, the middle four, obstructionism ruled the day with their threats to filibuster judicial nominees, opposing SS reform et cetera. And yet, if the economy is still in the tank in 2010, it will still all be the fault of the evil GOP.
Which has what relevance to this diary? The way to combat this is to not let them and their lapdog media get away with redifining the past. When they claim that the financial situation is a GOP thing, point out that the economy was swimming along until 2007. The deficit had been steadily decreasing since 2003, after 2007 it skyrocketed. When they blame greedy bankers for the housing crisis, point out that it was ACORN intimidating them into making these faulty loans-and Obama’s direct involvement in their activities.
