First, we need to be clear on the facts — not the media speculation:
- Sanford did tell his staff and family where he was going.
- Because he was traveling without a security detail, it was in his best interests that no one knew he was gone.
- His political enemies — Republicans at that — ginned up the media story.
- When confronted by a pestering media, things went downhill.
- Again though, at all times there was no doubt that Sanford’s staff and family knew where he was.
Now, here is all you need to know about this whole entire story — the reaction from the erstwhile Republicans angry at Sanford for not being a fiscal squish and from the media all go back to their core belief that without Sanford manning the barricades of government at all times, the government will collapse and people will starve, die, and forget how to read and write.
That’s it.
But that did not happen. Life in South Carolina went on. The world did not end. Government did not go off the rails. That the media and politicians would react as they did says more about their world view than anything else.
It is refreshing that Mark Sanford is secure enough in himself and the people of South Carolina that he does not view himself as an indispensable man.
Sanford’s lies spread through his office and out to the rest of us.
The left is linking to this post to laugh at it. What they are missing is that most of us tend to give people the benefit of the doubt — even people like John Edwards.
We live in a fallen world and we ourselves are fallen. I am disappointed in Sanford, but not angry. The default for politicians seems to be unchaste. All we can do is work for ideas and try to find men of good character to fight for those ideas.
I think one thing I have noticed in the past five years is that Democrats and Republicans tend to elevate politicians to such a level that there is no accountability. It is insular. There is no support group, no small group of friends, and no authority that can guide, admonish, and correct politicians privately.
We have each other. I’m off in a bit to hang out with friends from my Bible Study. Sanford probably has none of that. I’m sure John Edwards did not. Nor Bill Clinton. Nor John Ensign.
What Mark Sanford did was wrong. He needs to go in a dark hole somewhere where no one can see him or hear him and rehabilitate himself. On the bright side, I doubt his indiscretions will affect the FisCon movement. The left is going to spend the next week making Sanford into the second coming of James Dobson to smear real marriage advocates and social conservatives — positions Sanford was rarely vocal on.
Blessed is the Lord God Jehovah who brings forth bread from heaven, water from rocks, and men like Mark Sanford from the dust of the earth. His will be done.

Governors just get in the way when there's an emergency.
Achance Tuesday, June 23rd at 1:03PM EDT (link)Every state has both its law enforcement agencies and its FEMA analog. It is law enforcement at some level that flips the switches to start an emergency response and the response plans just go into action. Of course, some states do it better than others; some have professionals in these positions, some have hacks in political sinecures, e.g, NOLA at the time of Katrina.
Usually, somebody tells the governor if it is a big deal and the governor goes on TV to make a disaster declaration. That declaration has nothing to do with the actual emergency measures already underway but is the means by which the local government can start transferring the response and, more importantly, the expense to the state government and ultimately to the federal government if the event merits a federal disaster declaration.
Then the governor hops in a helicopter or something and descends on the scene with an army of security, reporters, and hangers on who want to be seen and they gum up the works until the photo-op is over and they go back to doing what such people do.

Yes, his opponents took advantage of the situation, but that’s a given in politics. It doesn’t change the fact that the whole thing was handled badly by his staff. Their answers made him look questionable.
“It is refreshing that Mark Sanford is secure enough in himself and the people of South Carolina that he does not view himself as an indispensable man.”
On one hand, yes. I’d rather not hear from politicians unless absolutely necessary, and I’m tired of the constant media barrage from the White House. But Sanford will cut short his career if he keeps making ill-advised choices. It’s fine for him to take a trip, but he should have either taken one or two of his sons with him over his Father’s Day trip, or he should have called it a working vacation from day one, rather than imply that he’s leaving his staff to handle his elective duties.
The lesson to be learned in this dust-up is that perception does matter — if he wants to keep winning elections.

Sanford has fought the good fight
Adjoran Tuesday, June 23rd at 11:36AM EDT (link)He has battled the corrupt state legislature for years, trying to instill some sort of fiscal sanity.
South Carolina has structured its state government so the legislature has most of the power, unfortunately. The Governor is a weak office relative to most states, and all judges owe their seats to legislators. Such is a prescription for corruption, and that’s what we get. Republicans, Democrats . . . it matters little in the legislature, where everyone who plays ball will get some goodies.
If Sanford, having just lost what will probably be his last major battle with the thieves, wants to take some time away from it all after the end of the legislative session, why shouldn’t he? And why should the media expect to know where he is?
“What if there’s an emergency?” Then I suppose he would come back, don’t you?
The entire elected and appointed level of ANY government
Achance Tuesday, June 23rd at 12:13PM EDT (link)could take off for months and the only people who’d notice would be the lobbyists and reporters. Behind every one of the elected and appointed officials are career employees who actually know where the light switches and restrooms are and what the switches and levers of the government do. The very hardest think you could do would be to stop a large government from running; it would just plod along doing what it does indefinitely. This is a good thing in that it makes nobody indispensible and a bad thing in that it makes it very, very difficult to get a government to change its direction on anything.

lastrick Tuesday, June 23rd at 12:18PM EDT (link)>>His political enemies — Republicans at that — ginned up the media story.
Anyone who has visited Hot Air in the past 24 hours has seen me essentially repeating this stance against AllahPundit. And I wish I had had more support over there for this view which has been so clearly echoed here by Erick.
The story started with Jake Knotts, a longtime Sanford rival. And that should have been the end of it. “Who said it? Knotts? Oh, end of story.” If you’ve followed Lexington, SC politics at any time, you know this guy and his beef with Sanford (including the failed gubernatorial bid in 2006). So when sites like Hot Air and AoS run with this story, not only is it “carrying water for the Democrats”, it’s just downright BAD JOURNALISM. It would have taken anyone just a few moments to look at who started the accusations and realized it was a non-story. So my beef with AllahPundit is (besides the constant bashing of good conservatives) this was just another example of piss-poor journalism on Hot Air’s part.Wait until the entire story comes in before passing judgement.

Definitely Overhyped, But Handled Badly
DavidSage Tuesday, June 23rd at 1:10PM EDT (link)Maybe it was a screwup by Sanford’s staff, the way this was handled was really poor.
The fact that his wife was quoted as not knowing where he was, and didn’t check in on Father’s Day, casts him in a poor light. If both his office and family/wife knew where he was the whole time, they either lied to the media or really didn’t know where he was.
When asked about his whereabouts, why couldn’t they have simply said, “We know exactly where he is, he is reachable, but we’re not going to disclose his whereabouts.” The story would have died instantly.
A Governor does have significant duties, like off the top of my head being in charge of the National Guard. If you’re going to be out of reach, at the very least the Lt. Governor should be made aware. I think dropping off the face of the Earth is a luxury you give up when you are elected to such a high office.
I was really hoping Sanford would run for President, I feel he’s probably the best Governor in the U.S. That being said, I don’t think he’s ready for Prime Time after seeing how he handles the media. If he can’t handle the local South Carolina press, he’ll get destroyed by the national media during a Presidential campaign. You don’t give your opponents an opening like this, and Sanford had to know he had a lot of people gunning for him.

This is just too much weirdness for one who would be a leader or executive. I don’t mind the vacation part (although I’m a little concerned about going abroad with zero security), but leaving the chain of command subject to “reachability” is wrong, and leaving your staff AND family in the dark shows shockingly poor judgment.
I was also taken aback by the blunt statement that ’state officials’ would make any necessary decisions if Sanford wasn’t ‘reachable.’ It seems to me that the Lt. Governor would make decisions in the Governor’s absence, NOT unnamed ’state officials.’ Ecch.

If Mark Sanford can put all this behind him at a press conference then I will hail him as "a greater Reagan than Reagan"
ZootSuit Wednesday, June 24th at 12:35PM EDT (link)Meaning that Sanford’s ability to communicate above the din and drone of the MSM in order to get his message across would be greater than Ronald Reagan’s.
Let me say that I do not think that anything Mark Sanford did was in and of itself “bad.” There is absolutely nothing wrong with him going to Argentina for a little “R&R.” or whathaveyou. Moreover, I do not think he went to Argentina to get drunk, do drugs and/or have an affair. Until conclusively proven otherwise, I personally think Mark Sanford is completely innocent of such things (although, because of the way Sanford has handled this situation, defending him against such allegations is difficult for his supporters).
But the problem with Mark Sanford is that he evidently did not tell anyone where he was going and provide a means of communication. Quite frankly, what he did was STUPID!
The best thing I can think of for Mark Sanford in this situation is if he can honestly say that one of his staffers blatantly lied. That he did tell at least one (high-ranking) person in his Administration where he was going and how to contact him but that that person lied to the press and said that they did not know. But even then, that still leaves the question of why didn’t his wife know where he was.
Let alone the question of why he went to a foreign country alone in the first place.
I am sorry but I cannot think of a single legitimate reason for him to leave the country without his family and a security detail, without telling anyone where he was going and how to contact him in case of an emergency.

What amazes me is the ongoing Pavlovian propensity of conservatives to eat and discredit their own based on nothing more than the bleatings of a media that couldn’t embrace a conservative idea or leader if someone put them in a straitjacket together.

Oooooh, aaaaah secret drives along the coast in Argentina. Oh my, what intrigue, what fascination, what utter crap. Who cares? It is now a legitimate negative news story when some politician goes on a trip to clear his mind. I can’t wait until they start reporting the details on unplanned bathroom break!
What is this fascination with politicians vacations anyway? Just buy the National Enquirer and that should quench your thirst for this type of garbage. Honestly, unless Sanford comes out and says he was searching for the Yeti, don’t call me.

Oh, and a "Kowlaski"
Marcus_Traianus Wednesday, June 24th at 10:41AM EDT (link)Look at where the stories are sourced from. who is reporting and their motivations. That is the real story which always seems to be missed. But then, that would take a bona fide journalist, not partisan hacks and DNC acolytes.

You can be cool with it. I think its best to preserve some credibility by being a little honest. If a pol’s staff tells the world that he is in Appalachia, when he was in Argentina. Yeah, that does require a double take.
Not Dead Yet!
Oh wow. Lucianne? There MUST be something fishy
Marcus_Traianus Wednesday, June 24th at 11:05AM EDT (link)Funny how each potential “issue” is lately an excuse to pull a “Palin” on every Republican candidate? Further interesting is how the guys (even on his own side) with political aspirations are spinning this story? Yes, I know all the deep intellectual conservative centers of philosophy have picked up on this.
Unless, Sanford says there was something illegitimate or unethical going on I will stick with the rational, intellectual thinking and forgo the tabloid, DNC destruction allure.

"the deep intellectual conservative centers of philosophy"
Swamp_Yankee Wednesday, June 24th at 11:13AM EDT (link)No, its just a newsworthy story. Period. Pretending this is some conspiracy against Sanford is silly and gives a bad name to those conservatives who justifiably assert media bias (e.g. ABC and health care promo, phony pressers, ..)
This isn’t biased. Its just weird, which any rational person can see and I would think those who already stuck their head out for the Sanford by exclaiming that everyone knew he was hiking the App. trail would be a little shell shocked from defending one false story.

WOW. GC buys the tabloid line?
Marcus_Traianus Wednesday, June 24th at 12:44PM EDT (link)How interesting you now say Sanford was “reckless” and a “Ron Paul like flake”. Oh boy, what a little time away from the office will buy one in personal sanity- costs one much more in goodwill and personal support. Yep; that is the type of supporter I want watching my six.
Personally, I am not going to make excuses for anybody. But based on the current facts this seems to be a “tempest in a teapot”.
Oh and the reason he was not replaced is because;
A- That would have been a bridge too far under Article IV, Section 12
B- It would have been too politically costly for the executors and focus on them instead of this perpetual cowardly attack from largely unnamed sources
Again, if Sanford comes out and says this was something nefarious or unethical- then the facts change and so does my opinion. But until then, count me out of the flame-thrower party fueled by the DNC and Sanford’s other detractors.

Marcus, I said I USED TO think Sanford was
Mike gamecock DeVine Wednesday, June 24th at 1:56PM EDT (link)a Ron Paul like flake - this goes back to my days as a dem when sanford was voting against all budgets in dc and pork for his district and then to a certain extent due to the pig incident! But I voted for him and have come to love the man.
see my whole column both before his argentine revelation and my update
my conclusion of recklessness is narrowly based on facts that are very unlikely to be disproved by Sanford today. In fact I expect he will apologize to his staff.

Not Tabloid; Just The Facts
Swamp_Yankee Wednesday, June 24th at 4:18PM EDT (link)Like I stated, Republicans look stupid, when Republicans ignore the obvious. Sanford behavior was very odd. That should have been obvious.
Republicans got suckered into defending his everyone important knew about his “Appalachian Trail” hike. Ending up in Buenos Aires was not reasonable and no journalist worth his would not have asked questions. That’s not tabloid, that’s newsworthy.
Not Dead Yet!
Argentina? Wow...
wesmorgan Wednesday, June 24th at 9:15AM EDT (link)So, he just decided to go to Argentina. He’s out of touch AND out of the country? This is a bit more than “hiking the Appalachian Trail;” he definitely should have turned things over to the Lt. Governor.
How do you know he didn't?
izoneguy Wednesday, June 24th at 10:17AM EDT (link)The Gov. is not going to report such an action if he did. And the Lt. Gov. would not tell anyone if he did. Don’t believe everything you read from the MSM or from the internet.

His Presidential Ambitions Are Shot
DavidSage Wednesday, June 24th at 12:45PM EDT (link)Stick a fork in him, he’s done. I’m not sure he’ll be able to ever run for office in South Carolina ever again, much less on a National Stage.
Flying off to Argentina without telling your family and never checking in, even on Father’s Day?
Not alerting the Lt. Governor when your leaving the country, and cutting off all communication?
Having your staff tell the media your hiking in the mountains?
This is behavior of a reckless individual. We don’t know all the facts, but clearly there’s a lot of lying going on about where he was and what he was doing, and there was clearly a cover up.
I understand being upset at media bias, but we can’t look like fools defending people who have clearly made mistakes. We end up undermining our own cause.
Yeah right
Neil Stevens Wednesday, June 24th at 12:47PM EDT (link)Name one thing that happened badly as a result of this trip.
The Governor is not responsible to his staff. He’s not responsible to the press. He has a job to do for the voters.
What didn’t get done?
What’s Obama doing right now that’s not getting talked about because so many of us are buying into the press hype?

We Have A Hard Enough Time Without Defending These Type Of Issues
DavidSage Wednesday, June 24th at 1:38PM EDT (link)Regardless of how much I admire Sanford’s policy stances (and I do), I don’t want to get bogged down in issues like this when it comes to defending individuals.
Sanford was “my” front runner as far as who I was pulling for in 2012 nomination, but no longer. My conclusion from all of this is Mark Sanford is at best an idiot, at worst trying to cover something inappropriate up.
Did Sanford, a sitting Governor and aspiring Presidential nominee, think it would be a good idea to fly to South America without telling anyone where he was going?
Unless a REALLY good explanation comes out of this, I think he’s a reckless individual that can’t be trusted. This isn’t normal behavior from any person, much less a sitting Governor.
There were several opportunities to set the record straight, and every time it was met with a cover up. I don’t think Republicans should stick their neck out for people like this, and I certainly know I’m not. If this man had a (D) next to his name, my bet would be the same people defending him would be calling for his head.
There’s too much riding on the Presidency to put all our chips on this guy, and my guess when the dust settles is most Republicans will feel the same way.
You are correct, David Sage

Too rash a conclusion to call Sanford "toast"
civil_truth Wednesday, June 24th at 12:59PM EDT (link)He’s dug himself a hole, to be sure, but we’re still a long way from the 2012 Presidential race. Barring new facts, so far we’re talking about a character trait and “might have beens” - not tangible injury to anyone else.
To our knowledge, nobody drowned because he didn’t call the police, no subordinate was giving him fellatio - and politicians who have committed those actions haven’t seen their political careers ended. Nothing Sanford did here rises to that level of misconduct.
But Sanford’s actions are certainly going to be under a microscope going forward - and that’s an very uncomfortable spot to be in.
And Rightly So!
I don't believe Mark Sanford is "toast"
ZootSuit Wednesday, June 24th at 1:05PM EDT (link)I do believe, however, that he showed very bad judgment and did damage any presidential ambitions he may have but I think he can recover (with time and if he shows better judgment in the future).

Are you so blind to history that you cant remeber a few months back
mbauer Wednesday, June 24th at 1:44PM EDT (link)when we watched the country elected one whose pastor repeatedly and passionately damned America?
If you wanted to argue that Sanford doesn’t have a shot due to his lack of gravitas, or ability to make a cult of personality or something, I could buy that. But no single personal mistake seems to be enough to keep anyone out of the oval office.
Well, not if they have the media on their side.

The lesson of Mark Sanford's "hike"
ted40 Wednesday, June 24th at 1:47PM EDT (link)is that it makes sense to think carefully before rushing to attack *or* defend someone.
Before making any more confident pronouncements, we might want to ask ourselves: what *was* Mark doing in Buenos Aires, why did it require secrecy, and how likely is it that he’s going to be able to preserve that secrecy another 24 hours?
Also, why didn’t the governor’s lovely wife do a better job of covering for him? Just a thought.
EE, Totall Wrong...AGAIN!
neversaynever Wednesday, June 24th at 1:47PM EDT (link)Below are the “facts” so arrogantly stated by EE. Every one is dead wrong. Any chance EE will recant, apologize or otherwise admit to his hackery? No way. On to the “facts”:
First, we need to be clear on the facts — not the media speculation:
* Sanford did tell his staff and family where he was going.
* Because he was traveling without a security detail, it was in his best interests that no one knew he was gone.
* His political enemies — Republicans at that — ginned up the media story.
* When confronted by a pestering media, things went downhill.
* Again though, at all times there was no doubt that Sanford’s staff and family knew where he was.
so what that doesn't mean you should be rude nt

Don’t you have to be verging on victorious for this expression to apply?
