There is a game of distractions being played in Washington, D.C. right now. It is both intentional and designed to minimize conservative strengths.
We must not play the game as the left would have us play it.
Here is how the game is played.
The President pushes cap and trade to the Senate while also advancing socialized healthcare.
As those balls advance, the Attorney General makes rumblings about prosecuting individuals who engaged in enhanced interrogation techniques.
While conservatives get distracted by the Attorney General, the administration claims Dick Cheney refused to disclose a CIA program and the Democrats will investigate.
Tomorrow Sonya Sotomayor begins her confirmation hearings.
By throwing all of these balls around, the left hopes to distract the right. Our natural inclination is to be distracted by the shiny national security balls. Some of us will fixate on Sotomayor.
Meanwhile, the leftist agenda makes it way further through Congress. Already, some Blue Dog Democrats are leaning toward supporting socialized healthcare. And the right is suddenly intrigued by the Cheney story, which is as much about distracting us from Nancy Pelosi’s lies about the CIA as it is to distract us from coming policy.
Don’t play the game.
Sonya Sotomayor will be confirmed. Ignore that ball as best you can.
Dick Cheney will need some help, but we don’t all need to focus on that ball.
The interrogators will not be prosecuted. It is a ruse. Do not be distracted.
Cap and Trade and Obamacare are the balls in play. Keep focusing on them.
We cannot afford to be distracted from these two policy initiatives. They are trying to distract us. We must target Congress on healthcare and cap and trade.
It is a telling point of the game’s existence that the Democrats have not revealed the terms of their healthcare legislation. They want us fully distracted by these other matters before they do and rush it through.
Our singleminded focus right now must be on defeating healthcare reform. These other balls can keep bouncing off the walls.

I Disagree
IJB Sunday, July 12th at 1:48PM EDT (link)You fight *all at once*.
None of them are truly distractions – they’re all different ways the Left seeks to destroy the country, and us.
If we focus on just one, they’ll pass all the others, and they win.
They need to be bloodied on *every single one* of these things.
If we can’t do that, we deserve to lose.
I disagree with you

Erick, the occasion of the the nomination of a Supreme Court Justice is not a distraction
Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Sunday, July 12th at 2:03PM EDT (link)I agree that we must continually focus on the assaults on the poor and middle class that is cap and trade/health care, but even if we knew the future and that Soto’ will be confirmed, that would not argue for paying little attention to the matter.
Even if Soto’ is defeated, any replacement nominee would rule just as onerously as Soto’ would, but nomination hearings are also rare times when we can educate the public on the difficult issue of how libs use the courts to usurp liberty and tie that fact in the public mind to the democrats.
And it just so happens that Soto’ statements coupled with Sessions replacing Hatch as point man presents us with a great opportunity to brand the dems and make major political points that would make it more likely we win senate seats in 2010 and the oval in 2012 and can preserve and expand the conservative majority on the Court.

Is there also a risk of doing damage to long term prospects for the Republican brand in the Hispanic community by making attacks on Soto not based on principled objections but instead ones that cross over the line into personal attacks?
I’m not a fan of Soto, but as a net change on the makeup of the Supremes, she’s not that much a change. Same will be true when Ginsburg steps down or any of the other big time Liberals.
Hey maybe as a new lightweight Liberal, conservatives on the court will be able to hammer home on an intellectual basis some of the stupidity of the Left.

I’ve been watching the commentary leading up to these hearings and I’m hearing some good saber rattling from R Senators and it’s all issue based. That’s good and proper and I support that 100 percent.

No matter what conservatives say, the MSM will attempt to call conservatives bad names. Would that the so-called “conservative leaders” on the Judiciary Comm. would watch a few of these videos and study them, including those of Daddy Dick.
Sotomayor should be grilled on her views, her judicial opinions and her view of judicial ethics — as to the latter, she has not steered away from “controversial” subject matters.
We need to fight EVERYTHING the Debtocrats are thowing at the country. Seriously, is there even ONE thing they have done, or are doing, that is good for the country? I can’t think of one — I understand even in Afghanistan, Teleprompter Boy has foited Rules of Engagement on our troops that make it almost impossible for them to effectively fight the insurgents.
The nice thing about being attacked from all directions is that no matter in which direction you shoot, you’ll firing at the enemy. We need to fight on all fronts. If we lose Sotomayor, fine, but we need to be able to tell the American people that our side tried to protect them from her incompetence and racist, non-blind brand of “justice.”

Frankly, she’s replacing a hard-left justice in Souter, and it is, at worst, an even trade. She could actually wind up less liberal than Souter in the end.

Wind up less liberal than Souter?
TNJim (Diary) Sunday, July 12th at 3:08PM EDT (link)You’re far more optimistic than I am, bs. We can only hope. But like most here I believe she will be confirmed. Even so, I do think the Republicans on the committee need to lean on her and they can do that simply by bringing up some past decisions of hers, as well as inopportune quotes.
The emphasis was on "could"
Bill S (Diary) Sunday, July 12th at 3:20PM EDT (link)because I don’t think she could be any more left than Souter. There’s nowhere to go but up.
And your point on the GOP committee members is what I had in mind. They bring up the past decisions and quotes and make her squirm and hope she says something stupid.
Think back on past confirmation hearings. Which ones do you remember? The only ones in the public memory are Bork (and that one is almost forgotten to history, except for the “verbizing” of his name), and Thomas. Bork was defeated by a Democrat-controlled Senate, and Thomas was confirmed by a Democrat-controlled Senate, even with all the crap they threw at him. Even if we were to bash the hell out of her, she’ll STILL get confirmed.
We have a nominee that has no discernable opposition from the Ds, and only moderate objection by the Rs. Unless something missed in the vetting process comes out by surprise, there is not even an infinitesimal chance she won’t get confirmed.
There are two issues on the table in DC right now that matter: health care and cap/trade. It is critical to the survival of this economy and the long-term health of this country that those go down. Every bit of our efforts must be focused on those. If Sotomayor skates through or gets blasted in the process is irrelevant. Her presence on the court is not going to make one iota of difference in how cases go through for the foreseeable future.

This woman is undoubtedly going to be cofirmed, but in terms of using her to brand the Dems in upcoming elections, that may be a good thing. Frankly, I think Sotomayor may end up being as potent—and defining—a symbol against the Dems as Jimmy Carter’s “malaise” speech was for years after he gave it.
On a personal level—-as a white male—I get enrraged each time I hear her famous comment repeated. And I’ve got to believe that there are others out there like me, who are sick of race and identity politics.
On a broader level, we’ll be able to ask why the President who promised a post-racial politics that would bring us together (“we are not red states, or blue states….”) chose to make this woman his first choice for the Supreme Court.
But, to your point: we can only do this if we wage a vigorous debate in the confirmation hearings, go on record, and put this on the public’s radar screen. LIke all the other debacles, we have to make sure Obama is joined at the hip with this woman once the hearings are over.

You are right that it MUST BE FOUGHT but we cannot allow the MSM to consume all the focus on it while other ObamAgenda items get rammed through. We must juggle all of it, but focusing on the things (and even the SoSo nomination/hearings aspects) the MSM wants to avoid. It is about balance and avoiding the ultra-distractions.

But that is exactly how they got the Houe Bill passed.
That stupid ABC townhall was on a Wednesday. They began setting the legislative calender Monday and Tuesaday, plus Iran was gathering all the headlines. In the end, there was nothing we could do about Iran, just watch Obama piddle away and drop a few bombs. The ABC thing was months before any meaningful vote.
But only 47% now favor Soto appointment. I’m conflicted there.
Watch the legisalve calender,. Does anyone know when summer recess beigns? Cap and Trade is likely to come up summer recess. The House may try to sneak a vote on healthcare before then

SY, I also noticed the near
redneck_hippie (Diary) Sunday, July 12th at 2:10PM EDT (link)concurrence in time of the Obama infomercial with the vote on cap and tax.
These 2 abominable bills to me seem like they are trigger-ready: At a propitious moment, Pelosi pulls, whether they are finalized or not. Witness the spectacle of the management amendment materializing at 3 am on the day the House voted for the entire bill without having read either it or the amendment.
In my mind the two bills are inextricably linked because C&T is the only conceivable way the Ds can get the real health insurance scam fully enacted and paid for. And just as nefarious, the shiny object of “free health care” is intended to dupe the masses into thinking they will get something for nothing, even if a few are cynical about cap and tax.
SY, see my earlier comment to EE and plus, EE should understand that the damage the court

Everything is Worth Fighting, But Their Are Tactics Invovled
Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Sunday, July 12th at 2:26PM EDT (link)Yes, Obama diddled on Iran. Yes, the ABC/infomercial was dumb. But in no way should Republicans, both in politics, or in activist circles should have focused on that anf not the House Cap and Trade vote.
No one was talking about it until the Thursday before the vote. Everybody got their cues from tallk radio which was all health care and Iran. The Dems toyed with us like pet cats.
The kids at Kos call the tactic flooding the zone. They push a number of issues at once, hoping that something will slip through.
hey know if the people actually focus on any one issue, they will lose momentum.
It takes time to mobilize talk radio and the editorial boards and to get the ground troops to fight back with all the info the public wont get from the press.
But Soto hearing are just before the summer recess, which is scary. Keep your eye on the legislative calender. As soon as you see dates for amendment filings. Cease everything else and focus on the bill being pushed.

Agreed; but I think the Dems stumbled badly last week
jonreagan (Diary) Sunday, July 12th at 2:05PM EDT (link)I totally agree with your analysis—primarily, because once an entitlement program gets passed, it will never be reversed. Ever. Should Obama-care get passed, it’s government control and defecits for as long as we live.
But I think last week will go down as a turning point. Biden/Romer/Tyson talking about “Stimulus II” seemed to put a chill on everything they’re trying to do. Finally, people are wondering: if they “misread” the economy and got the diagnosis wrong, how could they have gotten the solution right? And if they’ve screwed up the biggest challenge that they faced so far, why should the people trust them on Health Care or Cap & Tax?
This is increasingly looking like a clown show, and I think they’re now on the defensive in a big way. The conversation now is not whether they’ll increase taxes, but on whom and by how much……and that’s not a conversation they want to be having right now, in “the worst recession since the Great Depression”……again, their own words.

Jack_Savage (Diary) Sunday, July 12th at 3:42PM EDT (link)This gives Republicans a perfect, absolutely perfect opportunity. All of these “distractions”, as well as the real issues before us fit extremely well into a narrative of Liberal Rogues and Radicals.
Soto? Liberal radical, legislating from the bench. A rogue, whose opinions are routinely overturned and whose narrow view and self-identification as a wise Latina woman completely undermines her ability to even remotely understand cases involving other ethnic groups.
Holder? Rogue AG, puppet of the Liberal Radicals, trying to make those who protect us criminals. Very possibly unfit to hold office.
Cheney? A bizarre obsession of Liberal Radicals, frightened because Pelosi KNEW. A well that the left has gone to time and time again, since they are unable to provide jobs and economic security to America.
Cap and Trade? Destroying our way of life in the name of Liberal Radicalism and the the hoax of the century. Aren’t we a little tired of making Al Gore rich?
Socialized Medicine? Dismantling the greatest health care in the world so Liberal Radicals can control everything you eat, drink and do.
Solution? If you care about your freedom and safety, help Republicans defeat a rogue judge. Help Republicans reign in a rogue AG who is bordeline incompetent. Help Republicans find out who TRULY knew what, and when – drag Pelosi back into the spotlight with an investigation led by Republicans and their staff. Help Republicans fight rogue environmental activists who want to legislate us back into the stone age, and rogue bureaucrats itching for control over your life and health through control over your doctors and medicines and treatments.
Send out the Special Forces. Spring the ambushes. Fight the unconventional warfare that won us our freedom centuries ago. Walk out of the chamber. If it IS a crisis, ACT like it is a damn crisis. Fight, fight, fight and fight some more, start the narrative and stick with the narrative. Use the code words – “shocked” and “dismayed” and “unprecedented” and “gravely concerned” and all the rest.
Not Blue Dogs, not “conservative Democrats” but Rogues and Radicals from now on, period. Really?
Nick Haynes (Diary) Sunday, July 12th at 4:03PM EDT (link)I tend to read your posts, and I like them quite a bit. But on Soto, she could be caught tomorrow on video robbing the non-profit gift shop of a care facility for wounded veterans that double as Big Brothers and Big Sisters, while taking a whiz on the Declaration of Independence, and she would still get at least 54 votes for confirmation. If conservatives like Thomas got through in a Dem majority, there is no way they’re going to toss one of their own. The absolute most we can hope for is unified Republican opposition and to pick off two or three Democrats, and that is only if the above scenario played itself out.
I was recently reading a piece somewhere (can’t remember where). One of the lessons that the Dems learned from the HillaryCare battles was that they only focused on healthcare, which gave Republicans a stationary target. Erick is right: they’re hoping that, by giving Republicans some low-hanging fruit every now and then, they’ll be able to get their major agenda items through.
What does confirming Sotomayor change? Besides the fact that there will be a Latina woman in that seat instead of a Caucasian man…nothing. Sotomayor and Souter are fairly interchangeable. This just effectively extends that liberal vote to a few years beyond Souter’s lifetime.
As far as Cheney goes, they’re not going to go after him, because a.) they already had the perfect reason when he was in office and there was a “reason” to oppose him without looking petty and vindictive, and b.) if they bring that too much to bear, it will sink them just as quickly as it might sink Cheney.
Build a narrative, yes. Work towards painting a broad picture, yes. But, focus the majority of your effort on cap-and-tax and healthcare. Those are major changes from the current system, and if passed and signed, will be around far longer that Sotomayor or Cheney.
If you’re not networking, you’re not helping.

You make good points Nick
Jack_Savage (Diary) Sunday, July 12th at 5:00PM EDT (link)And many thanks for the kind complement.
Let’s just take one of the items. I agree with you (and Erick) on Sotomayor. Confirmation is a certainty. The Court will be no different with her confirmed. But to make a long story short, we need to make it come at a cost. We MAY be able to make it come at a dear cost. Since we are in the minority, we can only inflict small cuts, so we need thousands of them. We can defer to her because she is a woman and a minority – just like Democrats would do – or we can say that we are showing her the respect of a rigorous confirmation process.
SHE is the one using identity politics, both in her decisions and through her affiliations – just like Democrats. SHE is the one who suggested she would be better able to judge because she was a certain race and gender – the position of a Democrat. This is antithetical to our concept of justice, and she should be called on it. The supporters who are going after the firefighter should be called on it, during the hearings. Does she support that action? Do Democrat Senators?
Sotomayor should not be the focus – the concepts she represents should. Let’s ask her to help us get to the truth, as she sees it. For example, only Latinas can judge Latinas? Really? Only blacks can represent blacks in congress? Do we believe that as a country? Does it stand to reason, then, that only whites can judge or represent whites, and in that case Obama can never represent me? What do you think, Judge Sotomayor? This can be done with one or two R Senators at most, at little cost to us.
Republicans can’t stop her, but they can gravely wound what she represents. She has to come at a cost to Obama and the Democrats, even if we are just nickle and diming them to death. So be it. Don’t drag out the hearings, don’t filibuster, but ask the questions – not so much of her, but of liberals in general. Draw distinctions. This costs Republicans nothing, and makes Democrats defend what they know Americans despise. Engage in every skirmish fully, then make the Cap and Trade / Socialized Medicine hills the ones to die on, with filibusters and the like.
Our tack – we gave you Sotomayor, even though we were “concerned” and “alarmed”. We won’t ask Holder to resign, even though he is “bizarre” and “confused” and “scattered”. We question their “obsession” and “fetish” when it comes to Cheney, and wonder why they continue to “take their eyes off the economy with these hateful attacks on broadcasters, firefighters and former officials.” They expend resources, they play defense, we cut, and cut, and cut, all together, with one voice, everywhere there is a camera or microphone. It costs nothing. Nothing.
Then, when they get to Cap and Trade, and Socialized medicine, Americans realize they can’t be trusted, it isn’t about jobs, and if they need an answer right away, the answer is “no”.

Sound Advice for Republicans
Joe Cor (Diary) Sunday, July 12th at 4:58PM EDT (link)But why don’t Republicans borrow from the Dem playbook? Throw a few shiny balls around for Dems to chase.
How about relentlessly pressing Nancy about what she actually heard in her CIA briefings? How about demanding an investigation, and possible impeachment, of Justice Ginsburg for expressing support for eugenics? How about relentlessly pressing Obama to reveal what we learned in enhanced interrogations?
These are all legitimate issues, and pressing hard on them would take, at least momentarily, the eyes of Dems off cap and trade and socialized medicine. The more time Democrats have to swat these things away, the less focused they are on their agenda. The less time they have to strong-arm reluctant Democrats to vote with them. The less credibility they have with the American people. The more likely they will make a big mistake that will throw them off stride.
And in Republicans’ case, these shiny balls are all legitimate issues. They should be raised. It is their duty to press on them. So good policy, and the national interest, also could result in good, effective, smart politics. The best defense is a very aggressive offense.

Kenny Solomon (Diary) Sunday, July 12th at 6:45PM EDT (link)When the UN sticks their noses in (not if…. because it is coming, whether it’s this time or another) and an actual vote is taken, I see the following things occurring…… No, I’m not smoking wacky tobacky or drinking.
1. Obama orders a ‘yea’ vote for a Palestinian State ; Hillary casts the vote herself in The UN main chamber and announces that all aid to Israel will be cut off if Israel objects or puts up a fight ; Israel will most assuredly walk out of the chamber before the vote and maybe even withdraw from The UN and refuses to recognize the UN mandate.
2. Israel then calls the vote itself an act of war against a sovereign nation, declares “it’s on”, expels the US Ambassador, recalls most if not all of their own ambassadors and turns the IDF loose on those who want to eliminate the nation and Jews.
3. Iran immediately stands up for their Muslim Brothers and attacks Israel with everything they’ve got and maybe even a nuke or two they will be given as a “good luck gift” (from the Norks or Russia).
4. The world catches fire.
5. Obama will call a press conference, say only that he’s “deeply concerned” and then heads out to play hoops with his buds.

fuzzisliipers (Diary) Friday, July 17th at 5:12PM EDT (link)i often confuse this blog for a pragmatic, realistic, mature political discourse.
this is a horrifically hypocritical and uneducated thesis on what you interpret as the “liberal agenda”.
yeah yeah yeah, im a freedom-hating/socialist/un-American liberal; but at least ive done some reading and some soul searching about morality and ethics.
to actively combat a second-option healthcare program, and to distort the facts behind it (i.e. “its gonna ruin small businesses”, “its gonna tax everyone poor”, “its a government takeover of healthcare”) is morally reprehensible at best. Even from the perspective of “Jesus-is-lord”; the ethics behind supporting those who are too meek or poor to support themselves is pretty righteous… i dont understand the conservative abhorrence to it.
oh, and Sonya is pretty moderate, considering the conservative bastion the supreme court has become. the supreme court is supposed to be a proportional reflection of the nation’s demographics… and unfortunately, white males are not the only people here. …nor are they the only ones who are capable of displaying patriotism.
and divulging the secrets of a CIA program that was kept from congress with Cheney’s blessing seems to be a pretty noble task. Consider the Tom Clancy movie “Clear and Present Danger”… the things that are hidden from congress, by the CIA, probably aren’t inert, ethical, or aligned with the American public’s morality (which is pretty important, considering that’s who the federal government represents).
i honestly feel like im talking to a child when i discuss politics with those of the conservative cloth… a child with autism, who is only capable of yelling out “socialist!” or “you hate freedom!” or “liberals only tax and spend!”… its really obnoxious. I honestly wish conservatives would stop their fetishistic obsession with our founding fathers, and simply follow their lead… preferably to a book-store, or library, or somewhere they can read and learn.
i say this not out of malice, but of compassion… because while we’re on the topic of “distraction”, id live to discuss the republican tactic of turning the poor/blue-collar/rural/religious against himself. Every election cycle, the “average-joe” is forced by his party to focus on issues that really dont apply to his security and happiness; things like abortion, gays, church-and-state, socialism, ect. …instead of things like unions, healthcare, privacy, taxes, social-security, and foreign policy.
someone who condones the perverse “distraction” of his ideological-fellows every four years shouldn’t throw stones in his glass house. …but not that it really matters… since none of the things listed above really count as diversions.
this is really stupid

kyle8 (Diary) Friday, July 17th at 5:29PM EDT (link)you are not bright enough to realize what we do, which is simply that all the things you described about the health care bill are lies.
I have been around long enough to know that if a lefty says a program is not going to take away your options, it will,
if they say its not going to hurt business, it will.
if they say it will cost x amount, it will really cost x times 4 or more.
You see, we know the truth, that all the so called compassionate liberal programs have failed to reduce poverty or done anything to help people, because that is not their real purpose, their real purpose is to create more dependence on government.
You need not to search your soul, but to wake up and start reading a little bit of right centered recent history.

You probably are already gone back to KOS
Leopard1996 (Diary) Friday, July 17th at 6:28PM EDT (link)But let me enlighten you on a few thing jackass.
1. Your “Health care option”, we have had people actuallly read this bill, and from what I can see, if I don’t keep my job then I have no other choice than to go on the government plan which may be nice for a while, but when it becomes untenable, (like every other government program), then my options and options for about everyone else are going to get cut.
2. Divulging secrets to congress from the CIA. Maybe one of the reasons that the CIA may be playing close to the vest is that you have constant leakers from the people in congress, (namely Steny Hoyer), and don’t want their people getting killed because of the leak. Thanks to your people, all our enemies need to do is read the New York times, and get more intelligence than any counter intelligence agency could provide.
3. Everytime I check out the lib sites, I feel like I am reading mealy mouthed college kids that wouldn’t know their ass from their elbow if shown a map, so go screw about feeling like your are talking to a child.
4. From every campaign I saw conservatives do address all the issues that you are talking about. Maybe if it wasn’t for the massive inflation of wages and benefits that unions go for, depite the condition of the company, the average joe would be able to afford more things that are American made, instead of us buying a majority of our stuff from China. As far as healthcare, if doctors didn’t have to worrry about Mr 700 dollar haircut John Edwards, talking in a babies voice and getting a mulit million dollar settlement due to nothing but tugging heartstrings, maybe the doctors wouldn’t have to pay ungodly amounts of malpractive insurance that have to be pushed on to the patient. As to regards to “privacy” I like my right to privacy to bear arms, however, it is liberal scumbags such as yourself, who want to take that away from me in an incremental fashion. As far as foreign policy, the Obama apology let me blow every dictator tours have done nothing but show that our current leadership is weak, and they better take what they can now, because they don’t know how long this free lunch is going to last, and for social security, everytime that a conservatie tries to address the issue fairly for everybody, (I am 35 and don’t expect to see a dime of social security even though I have been paying into this system for about 21 years, (Had first job at 14).
So in conclusion jackass, when you are willing to have an honest discussion come back, until then GO SCREW.
