RedState Endorses Karen Handel for Georgia Governor

Joining our long list of conservative candidate endorsements like Tom Coburn, Jim DeMint, Marco Rubio, Mitch Daniels, and Bobby Jindal, RedState is pleased to add Karen Handel, our choice for Republican gubernatorial candidate in Georgia.

Five years ago, RedState decided we wanted to push a project — pick a state and get voter photo identification passed as a law.

Given the number of us from Georgia, it was a natural fit to work there. We worked with the state legislature and encouraged activists to push the law. It passed. Unfortunately, Georgia had a Democrat Secretary of State who was intent on opposing the law.

Four years ago, we stood behind Karen Handel as she ran for Georgia’s Secretary of State. She stood with RedState on voter ID laws. She fought for the laws and implemented the laws. But she did not stop there.

Karen Handel has also been a leader among this nation’s Secretaries of State in pushing for citizenship verification. She knows what’s at stake.

During George H. W. Bush’s tenure in office, there was one staunch and vocal conservative in the White House — Vice President Dan Quayle. And the only person further to the right than Dan was Marilyn Quayle. Karen Handel served as a Deputy Chief of Staff in the White House, working for Mrs. Quayle.

Before becoming Secretary of State, Karen Handel was Chairman of the Fulton County Commission. Fulton County is the most heavily populated county in Georgia — it is Atlanta. And it was broke. Under Handel’s tough leadership, Fulton County prospered with a balanced budget.

Throughout her tenure, Karen Handel has been an unapologetic budget slasher. She is pro-life, pro-family, and pro-business. Refreshingly, she’s also not a wild-eyed populist, but believes in conservative reforms to effect not just smaller government, but more efficient and less intrusive government.

During her time in the Secretary of State’s office, she has not just been a champion of voter identification reforms, but also business reforms to make it easier to set up businesses in Georgia. She has worked to cut out ridiculous regulations and worked to streamline government filings. She has also worked hard to foster greater transparency and access to government documents online.

Georgia is considered one of the reddest of the red states. But it has yet to elect a governor who has always been a Republican. Even Georgia’s present governor, Sonny Perdue, did not become a Republican until a couple of years before running for governor. It shows. His instincts remain largely those of a conservative southern Democrat.

Unlike several of her opponents in the Republican Primary, Karen Handel is a life long Republican and conservative — not part of the good ol’ boy Republican establishment, but a Republican we can stand behind without being embarrassed by and innately, intrinsically conservative.

When RedState needed a champion, Karen Handel was there for us. RedState will now stand behind her as she seeks the Republican nomination for Georgia Governor. We encourage you to give what you can to her campaign.

Now that Mark Ritchie has accomplished his mission—creating an environment in which ACORN could elect a US Senator—now it’s time for him to go.

“No more voter fraud” can be a winning argument for our side, if we have the will to make it.

I always thought that this websites mission was to endorse true Conservative candidates for office, but now, it appears that you’ve pulled an NRSC and endorsed the second least Conservative candidate. Just wow… This is probably my last post here. You guys know where to find me if you want to speak with me again.

I’m sure we’ll be so much the less without you…

Funny, you’ve endorsed John Oxendine, a man who was once caught rounding up mental patients to go vote for his man Al Gore.

Redstate is consistent in its endorsement of conservative candidates. You support budget slashers who are also pro life, pro business and pro tax cuts. These are the true conservatives and should be supported. Karen Handel deserves your endorsement.

We haven’t changed in 11 months. We’ve changed from 3 years ago, as we’ve become more activist, but we haven’t changed in the last year.

My only conclusion is that you’re an attention whoring idiot.

I had wanted to ask Karen Handel about Georgia interstates, but alas we were running out of time and Liz Cheney was going to speak next. Too bad for me.

Instead, I’ll talk about it here. The Atlanta metro area is growing at an astounding rate, more than 100K people a year move here every year. But the metro area isn’t seeing enough progress on its interstates. The Outer Perimeter was cancelled, which is a shame because the current Perimeter stopped being a bypass years and years ago. The Stone Mountain freeway was supposed to connect to Freedom Parkway downtown, GA 400 and I-675 were supposed to connect, and Langford Parkway wasn’t just supposed to go just from I-285 to the south end of the Connector, it was supposed to connect to I-20 on both ends.

Granted, there is some progress being made or at least planned; there’s talk of building some kind of expressway from the Dalton area on I-75 east to I-85 since the Outer Perimeter was canceled, there’s the horribly malnumbered I-3 planned from Savannah to Augusta and presumably all the way to Knoxville if the ecodroids don’t get it stopped, and there’s Interstate 14 planned to go from Augusta to Warner Robins to Columbus and points west. I’ve also read rumors about reviving Langford Parkway and extending it as per its original design, and bringing back connecting GA 400 and I-675, via a tunnel. And of course, there’s the Revive 285 project, but parts of it are not even scheduled to start on construction until 2021, by which time Atlanta will have grown by another million and a half or so.

Anyways, this is a lot more detail than I would have gone into in person. Maybe I’ll get a chance to ask her where she sees Georgia’s road network going next year.

If anyone wants to endorse a second governor candidate, Jason Atkinson in Oregon could use your support. He will be announcing shortly, and he?s a good conservative.

I?d suggest checking him out, first.

It seems a bit too soon to endorse Karen. The race is young and there are very credible candidates here. What distinguishes them in just coming to light. I like Karen but I’m looking for the best not just good. Our party is sliding backward with too many who are not solid conservatives to the core, too many that are willing to hold power rather than hold integrity.

May the best conservative man or woman win.

and with Redstate support she is on top of my list. Anyway you or me to ask her on the FairTax issue. Oxendine mention about a tax reform in Georgia and I would love it if she run on the FairTax. If she go this route, then I am 100% in for her and even donate to her campaign.

I would love some Georgia insight on who – Deal or Handel – is best able to beat Roy Barnes.

I think the GOP wave election will help make that a reality, but the fact that Barnes did a good job in his earlier term is a factor in his favor.
