Thanks to Neil, Steve, and Henry our site is now smoking fast and can handle significantly more traffic.
The other day I got an email from “DaveinBoca” who really went on a rather insulting tangent about site operations. I understand his frustration, but geez — while we hate 500 errors, let’s get serious — our traffic is fantastic these days. Growing pains are a good thing.
DaveinBoca said he’d never, ever, never come back before throwing in a few personal shots at me. Oh well.
For the rest of you, thanks for your continued support. And we really could not have done all this except for Neil and the gang at Eagle. We very much appreciate it.
Consider this an open thread.
UPDATED: I forgot to add Prashant who, I’m told, like Henry is now sleep deprived because of his dedication to helping us.

It's really the Eagle guys

I helped, but that’s really it. I helped, I wasn’t in the lead on this.
I mean, I went to bed last night. The guy who really DID this, didn’t.

penguin2 Monday, August 17th at 11:20AM EDT (link)You all do a fantastic job and let us say thanks. It is one of the few things we can do, besides taking the messages and lessons learned here at RedState and putting them to work in the world.
As far as ‘DaveinBoca’ it annoys me that people cannot be patient and realize the good out weighs the ‘bad.’ I don’t know of any other site quite like this. People often note how they come back again and again for that very reason. Whenever, I’ve heard Rush mention RedState, which has been with increasing frequency lately, the site immediately slowed to a crawl, but I was thinking positive about it. Not annoyed. I knew that traffic was heavy and that was a good thing.
Well anyway, Neil, take a bow and accept our compliments.

diakrioi Monday, August 17th at 12:15PM EDT (link)My 14-year-old switched to Ubuntu more than a year ago and talked me into it when I bought a new computer a couple of months ago. I am very pleased with my decision. Most of the day-to-day things (word processing, spreadsheet, etc.) work very much like they do in Windows. If you have to go mucking around with settings or install software that is where things get very different.
I should add that I am comfortable working with UNIX since I do that in my job. It also probably helps that I’ve moved a lot of things that I do off of the desktop. For example, I get all of my email thru Gmail now and it never gets downloaded to a client computer.
The last linux disto I used was SuSe 9.0
Richard Mullins Monday, August 17th at 12:23PM EDT (link)but that was on a much different system than now. I’m not sure how it would support it(using mostly onboard except for Video and Wireless) but I really need a 64bit distro(using Vista ultimate on a AMD Athlon x2 4850e based system with 8GB of RAM).

Great job, Neil and the folks at Eagle!
TNJim Monday, August 17th at 11:56AM EDT (link)First time in a few weeks I’ve been able to get on the site at this time of day and have it be so fast to load! From what I can tell so far it’s all working great! Let’s see what happens now when Rush mentions us again. That’ll be the real test!.
As I mentioned yesterday now would be a good time to hit the contribute button. Bandwidth costs money, as do high capacity servers as well as the maintenance thereof. Neil, you may have went to bed last night but I know there are times that you haven’t. Caleb wrote a piece a few days ago called Support Independent Conservative Journalism where a couple of links to donate to Neil can be found.
As far as DaveinBoca is concerned, well, some folks just don’t understand the internet. When you start out small and your traffic gets big temporary problems can occur. You guys just didn’t sit back and hope the site hits didn’t fall back to “normal”, you rolled up your sleeves and got to work to keep this level of traffic as the new “normal”. But such moves, especially to a 5 server system from a single box take time to prepare for and get it right. Neil dropped a few hints over the past few days that such a move was in the works, I guess Dave didn’t have the patience to wait for all that to come to fruition. Tsk, tsk. Personal attacks? Really? What a child!
Again, kudos to all involved, and RedState rocks!

TNJim, I don't even have the knowledge on the tech,
penguin2 Monday, August 17th at 1:08PM EDT (link)but I got it. See antisocial below, Erick posted a warning early evening about proposed shut down; but even then I just wish people could be more appreciative of what we have. This site runs without income from all of us who use it. We are lucky.
And I was thinking about ‘wolfgang’ who asked about linking. Maybe he doesn’t know the’link’ does not show until After the post goes through. This stumped me at first. Thinking I didn’t have a link and then I would just delete it…

TNJim Monday, August 17th at 1:25PM EDT (link)When you type out your comments and diaries your links and hyperlinks just show as the code, YouTube embeds, images, that sort of thing. It’s only after you click reply to this or publish that the site software automatically translates it into something you can click on.
You mentioned yesterday about trying hyperlinks next. I use FireFox’s text formatting toolbar for that. You copy the link from your browser same as before, then in your comment you highlight the text you want to make a link out of, click the link button in the toolbar (each tool in the bar will have a small text box come up when you position your cursor over it that tells you what it does), then a small box will appear where you paste in your URL. Click OK and your highlighted text will have the hyperlink code wrapped around it. Click post comment when you’ve finished and when the page reloads there’s your nice, shiny hyperlink! Super easy and great for lazy people like me!

Brian Johnson Monday, August 17th at 12:21PM EDT (link)The upgrade is a result of our deep-pocketed insurance company backers and Rush Limbaugh’s own money to keep the angry mobs riled up (heck, let’s throw in “Big Oil” and “Big Tobacco” as well.
