Rumors Surface That Leon Panetta is Resigning

I’m hearing a very credible rumor that Leon Panetta has dispatched a resignation letter to Barack Obama on vacation.

Panetta is said to be extremely angry about the possible prosecution of CIA officers doing their job and has decided to resign in protest.

The rumor is unconfirmed, but given the sourcing I think it is safe to treat it credibly.

UPDATED: Spencer Ackerman, cast in the role of news guy, says it is not true.

Checking my spam folder, I find an email from George Little at the CIA saying it is not happening.

How can that be when we were assured he was happy as a lark?

This kind of sucks. I was hoping for intra-administration war.

If Clinton goes next, can anyone say ‘Democratic Primary 2012′

I'm surprised

That he’s an American first and a democrat (and loyal Obama administration employee) second. If so, then good for him. We’ll just have to keep close watch on this.

Or it's a distraction.

The decision to investigate and prosecute CIA officials went over like a lead balloon. Panetta’s resignation gives Obama an out to “change” his mind.

Then again, perhaps you’re right and he is an American first.

Panetta changed his view after running it

Richard Mullins Wednesday, August 26th at 3:28PM EDT (link)

There is something about the CIA that makes haters into non-haters and Leon Panetta was one of those people that changed. Never got OAD(Obama Association Disease) and learned to be honorable.

Panetta sees the info unfiltered

Doubtless Rahm The Ballerina only thinks certain things are important enough to bother da boss about.
Panetta I’m hoping got a wake-up call to reality.

I’m just a little leery of it because of the timing among other things and I’d rather be alert than lulled into complacency on this or any other thing.

If true, I don't blame him. Actually, he'll have earned my respect.

ciscoguy Wednesday, August 26th at 3:22PM EDT (link)

They want to prosecute his agents and tie his hands on how he can collect intel, yet lay responsibility on him when/if they don’t thwart another attack. I’d quit too.

Panetta resigning does no one any good

RedBeard Wednesday, August 26th at 3:08PM EDT (link)

Not if he just takes his ball and goes home. But if he plans to be noisy once freed from the constraints of being an administration man, it might get interesting.

Standard-bearer for grouchy curmudgeonry since, oh, 1975 or so.

If he resigns now it speaks volumes

bk Wednesday, August 26th at 3:11PM EDT (link)

He wouldn’t have to say another word.

Yes, but...

stixxxnstones Wednesday, August 26th at 3:17PM EDT (link)

…volumes aren’t enough at this time. Nothing breaks through the Great Wall of Kennedy unless it’s earth-shattering. A mere resignation won’t do that.

He'll need armor

RedBeard Wednesday, August 26th at 3:17PM EDT (link)

If he remains quiet, watch as Team Obama marginalizes him via well-crafted and cleverly aliased attacks on his character and his job performance. He needs to speak out and make his case or risk being vilified in absentia.

Standard-bearer for grouchy curmudgeonry since, oh, 1975 or so.

Well yeah...

stixxxnstones Wednesday, August 26th at 3:34PM EDT (link)

…But here’s the thing:

He’s in charge of all the secrets. Any dirt that can be had, can be found by the CIA in under a week. If a guy wants to ride quietly into the night, AND has you by the political cajones…you let him ride quietly into the night, if he promises not to nuke you.

That’s armor. If he uses it to pre-emptively against his detractors, it’s game on, no holds barred.

Panetta and the CIA Domestically

Ausonius Wednesday, August 26th at 3:54PM EDT (link)

I briefly had my toe in the CIA decades ago, and can verify that they have all kinds of domestic connections - for very good and obvious reasons!!! - all the way down to local post offices!

They know all sorts of things domestically: the odds that Panetta has found out certain big things internationally to change his mind about the War On Terror are good.

But from what I could tell, he would have to be more of a long-term head to glean anything of interest (i.e. a “secret”) on a domestic politician.

And the CIA is not free of liberals: recall that they were occasionally sabotaging W. Bush during his 8 years with various leaks. And their information has been off target!

Of course, who knows? Even CIA liberals have their limits: perhaps NObama has pushed too far this time.

time for some convenient leaks...

JLenardDetroit Wednesday, August 26th at 3:57PM EDT (link)

perhaps it’s time for all those files on Bill Ayers et al actual connections to Obama and the other Obamunists in the Administration get leaked! There are known/admitted Communists in this admin, it’s time their antics at undermining America come out in full.

I disagree. If your boss stands up to his boss on your behalf for something this serious...

and his objections are summarily dismissed, there’s no better way to send a message than for him to quit.

Politically it would be awesome...

Erick Brockway Wednesday, August 26th at 3:46PM EDT (link)

But the blow it would cause at Langley might not be worth it.
Imagine working at CIA. The thought had to cross your mind to just give up and leave after about January 20.
Then you saw a fighter take over the Agency, and you thought “Maybe I’ll stick around, see if he’s for real.”
Now months later he pulls the plug in protest; do you stay or go?
Pull the ripcord, baby! Go deal with industrial espionage at twice the money.

High Turnover

kowalski Wednesday, August 26th at 3:51PM EDT (link)

The Obama Administration begins its churn before it is even filled out. More reason for Americans to understand that it was a mistake to elect him in the first place.

I'll believe it when I see it

lthurwitz Wednesday, August 26th at 7:12PM EDT (link)

I think the CIA needs to do some house cleaning. Their have been abuses that have made us less safe and there are allot of career CIA who would love to see some of the bad eggs fired and possibly prosecuted. I think Panetta is going to be right there with the broom.

I will be amazed

student Wednesday, August 26th at 11:26PM EDT (link)

I will be amazed if Panetta has the integrity and courage to stand up to this evil, stupid and radical action by Obama and his stooge Holder but I wll be impressed if he does. Using the legal power of the administration to try to persecute people you have policy differences with brought down the Athenian democracy (trial of Alcebiades), the Roman Republic (charges against Julius Caesar) and innumerable modern third world and some larger democracies. Following this the Republicans can conduct show trials against the Democrats for their economic crimes and corruption. Tit for tat. Holder is playing with fire. Obama launched this effort to distract attention from his absurd healthcare and cap and trade policies - red meat for the uber-lefts to distract them from his failure to nationalize the healthcare system. If Panetta acts with courage - as Elliott Richardson did - he can win in 2012.

Eric Holder

avgamerican Thursday, August 27th at 12:15AM EDT (link)

Eric Holder was a defense attorney for terrorists before he became AG. His agenda is to attack the former Bush Administration. Perhaps Leon Panetta realizes this and has to his credit drawn a line in the sand in the name of national security and the greater good.

Is he courageous enough?

antisocial Thursday, August 27th at 1:35AM EDT (link)
