RedState Endorses Roy Blunt for Missouri

Roy Blunt has worked his way into the top ranks of Republican leadership in Congress. He has been trusted by Republican Presidents for many years with candid advice. He is relied on even now by Republicans in Congress as they struggle to keep the team together in opposition to the siren calls of compromise with the Democrats.

More critically, Congressman Blunt is now seeking to become the next United States Senator from Missouri. As we fight to take back Congress, we need men like Roy Blunt on our side. Winning the open senate race in Missouri is necessary should we want to take back the Senate and, at a minimum, prevent the Democrats from having a filibuster proof Senate.

Today RedState is pleased to endorse Congressman Roy Blunt for the United States Senate.

RedState has an interesting relationship with Congressman Roy Blunt (R-MO). There are many times we find ourselves on opposite sides of issues, generally fiscal and earmarks related. There are many other times we find ourselves standing shoulder to shoulder with Congressman Blunt — supporting our soldiers, defending life, and opposing President Obama’s ridiculous healthcare scheme.

Roy Blunt is a good friend of this site. We have passionate disagreements on issues, but our friendship is unwavering. We can agree to disagree on issues because we know that in the grand scheme of things, we are with each other in the fight for freedom. We hope that as Congressman Blunt speaks with the voters of Missouri, he realizes the importance of ongoing work to reduce the size and influence of the federal bureaucracy. The Senate needs more reformers; Congressman Blunt can only benefit if he decides to be one of them.

In the particular race at hand, the contrast between Congressman Blunt and his opponent, Robin Carnahan, could not be more striking. Congressman Blunt opposes the Democrats’ cap-and-trade plan. Ms. Carnahan supports it. Congressman Blunt opposes the Democrats’ healthcare plans. Ms. Carnahan supports those plans. Conversely, Congressman Blunt supports regulator reforms that will allow people greater access at lower price to private health insurance. Ms. Carnahan opposes that. Congressman Blunt supports a strong military. Ms. Carnahan opposes that. Congressman Blunt supports letting every person decide their destiny. Ms. Carnahan believes the government should play a critical role in how you live your life.

Please join us in supporting our friend Congressman Roy Blunt as the next United States Senator from Missouri. Winning Missouri must be a priority for us in 2010 and with your help Roy Blunt will win.

He strongly supported the ICE effort particularly in Southwest Missouri.

Roy Blount is not my idea of the perfect candidate, based upon a number of positions he has taken. But if he has no viable and electable conservative challenger in the primary, and I’m assuming that’s the conclusion of the directors, then it would indeed be foolish to ship ammunition to the enemy camp by working against him.

If, on the other hand, a true conservative challenger with the ability to win
enters the race, the whole dynamic changes, from my perspective.

Bottom line: Half a loaf is always better than none, if full loaves are out of stock.

Blunt gets pretty good ratings from conservative groups (I think Christian Coalition was 97%, NRA “A”, etc.). He opposes universal healthcare, cap and trade, has a good record on the Energy Committee and certainly is pro military.

So what are the “cons” and what was Steele’s beef when he slammed him on the radio?

  • jjj3279

Roy Blunt is no conservative. Roy Blunt voted for TARP, one of the worst bills in the history of Congress. Roy Blunt, as GOP whip, pressured Republicans to vote for TARP.

Liberals used TARP to take over the auto industry. Barney Frank and Maobama will use TARP to take over the rest of the financial sector. Anyone who supported, voted for and lobbied for TARP is responsible for our slouch towards socialism.

Roy Blunt is the type of Republican that is killing this party. It’s unfortunate that he’s the “conservative” choice for MO Senate, clearly the republican party hasn’t learned anything since ’06.

  • RedBeard

If the choice is between a Republican who is only wrong some of the time and a Democrat who is wrong most of the time, the choice is clear.

I argued this point endlessly during the presidential campaign, trying to get a few disaffected McCain-haters to go to the polls and vote against Obama, but they were too blinded by idealogical purity and anger to see that by staying home they would be aiding the enemy.

  • bs

OK, so he voted for TARP. There are a number of conservatives who are attuned to the financial services industry who assert that TARP did exactly what it was intended to do – stabilize the financial markets. We don’t know what would have happened had TARP *not* been passed, but it could have been bad.

So what else do you have, other than that one bill?

I have little stomach for 100%ers, as I’ve stated in the past. You are one of them, apparently.

  • IJB

If anyone tries that, there will be almost no Republicans left!

There were good arguments for and against TARP, and at the time it made a lot of sense to a lot of people, including a lot of smart people around here.

In short – it’s a terrible choice for a litmus test.

But, then again – I’m generally suspicious of people trying to make that stick on Blunt, as I suspect they’re nothing more than Steelman bots/mobys in disguise…

As for Blunt, he doesn’t even really qualify as “someone who’s wrong some of the time” – fact is, Blunt is “wrong” on very, very few issues that matter.
(My bigger issue with him is actually his relative lack of telegenic-ness…)

  • jjj3279

TARP stabilized the market? LOL They can’t account for 350 BILLION of it and what’s worse, they don’t care! Banks sent money overseas or paid executives. None of the TARP money went where it was “supposed” to go.

Just wait til next year, with Barney Frank’s regulations that will “reshape” US Finance. Taht should give you chills. Roy Blunt gave him the cover, with TARP, to do it.

I’m not a 100%er but I think there are some issues we shouldn’t forgive or forget. It sucks that Roy Blunt is the “best” the MO GOP could come up with.

No dice. First, remember that the House Republicans were the only group that opposed TARP – and that meant going against their party’s President and in the face of threats that the world was coming to an end and precipitous stock market declines and everyone screaming that they would be held responsible for the destruction of America. Remember the total panic that the political establishment was in, and it was remarkable that the House Republican held out as long as they did.

Only under extreme duress did they yield, adding some safeguards which Bush in craven fear of his “legacy” failed to avail himself of, opening the door for Obama to abuse TARP to start his socialist revolution with thuggery against the banks who received TARP money and his using it to take over GM and Chrysler.

And the House Republicans have stood unified against Porkulus and the budget bill.

So your attack against House Republicans is totally misplaced as they are the group that that has stood strongest against Obama. Blunt may have chinks in his armor dating to when the Republicans had congressional majorities, but on TARP and subsequently, Blunt and his fellow House Republicans have been our best friends in Washington

As usual, saw that I wasn’t in the correct place one second after posting.

I’d love to see every “republican” who supported TARP voted out of office. I don’t care if it’s John Thune or Tom Coburn, they betrayed the country. They shouldn’t be in office.

Big spending, big government=FAIL. Fiscal conservatism=WIN. The GOP needs to wake up and realize the party (and the country) is sick of the federal government *wasting* our money!

As for the good arguments for TARP… um, good arguments? 500 economists said it was a disaster. The only ones advocating for it were liberal economists. It should have been a warning to everyone when Nancy Pelosi and Barney Frank were salivating for it.

FYI, I’m not a Steelbot. I’m not from MO, I know nothing about her.

There is no conservative option. That’s my point. It’s unfortunate that conservatives have to suck it up and support a big spending, big government “republican”.

You’re here a day and looking to defeat Republicans? I don’t think so. Homey don’t play that.

  • Aaron Gardner

while offering no actual Conservative to show support for.

I don’t think this is a good line for you to walk.

Let me assure people that Roy is a traditional common sense conservative.

No, his record isnt perfect, and he has posted here and directly told the district where the GOP went wrong. Then, he went to set things right.

I would challenge people to look into the legislation and the whys.

The orginal intent of the TARP bill was to be modeled after the late 80s S & L bailout program which would clean out toxic assets. It morphed into something else.

Whats more, for those who have forgotten, Roy Blunt and the House GOP was lucky to even get any negotiations and stopped elements like the 20% kick back to ACORN. People forget that?

Im guessing that some how people also forgot who actually wrote the bill. Right?

In the end, this endorsement pleases me not just because of the person or situation, but because it is well deserved.

  • bs

You should have been in Atlanta to see Rep. Blunt on the Skype feed. Too bad he couldn’t make it there in person. I was thrilled to hear Erick “pre-announce” this endorsement that evening. It is well-deserved.

Blunt will not have an easy time of it against (Where in the World Is) Robin Carnahan, but Missourians should realize that he is diametrically opposed to Barack Obama’s socialist policies and Robin Carnahan’s inevitable parroting of the TOTUS/POTUS’s Marxism.

  • Paul Seale

family comes first and i had a number of things to deal with. just call me the antisanford. :)

  • wanda

We do not need Roy Blunt or Robin Carnahan. These are old political families with old ties to the old ways of politics. No more ineffective politicians. If Roy Blunt was serious about representing us, he would be having townhall meetings all over the state. Where is he? Where is his opponent? Neither of them are out listening to the voters. They are hiding, playing political games.

  • http://briansimpson.wordpress.com Brian Simpson

I guess we should put you down as not voting?

    Offer solutions.

Or stay out of the way.

    {Bonus: Can you even name the only announced opponent to Blunt in the Republican primary? If you can, congratulations. You are probably in the 10% of Missouri voters who will even know who he is when it comes time to vote in the primaries.}

    Are you even a Republican?

There’s no glossary of terms for this place and apparently no way to query anyone but here.

A moby is a lowlife social reject who has nothing better to do with his worthless time than to come onto sites like ours and pretend to be Republicans while either a) acting in a way that is meant to embarass us, b) spreading D talking points to make us fight amongst ourselves, or c) just cause trouble.

It’s named after some no-talent (presumably… people with talent usually have names instead of corporate marketing campaigns) ‘musician’ called upon his side to do the above, having recognized deep in his heart that the left is devoid of substance, of fact, of reason, or anything else upon which to stand and make a case.

It’s the most blatant form of bad faith posting and gets an instaban.

  • jccbin

Since I had heard of the guy-who-makes-money-playing-records-and-calls-it-a-concert “Moby.” The description fits perfectly. Nuff said.
