Beware the person who got her job only after all the other competent people and Scott McClellan left the building.

Dana Perino does not like Matt Latimer’s book.

For those who don’t know, Latimer is writing an insider’s account of the Bush White House. It is the first from an unapologetic conservative. Latimer’s credentials as a real winger can’t really be messed with. He is one of us.

And he is making some news.

Dana Perino has run to National Review to call him a liar without using that word.

She had a much more muted response to Scott McClellan’s book. That’s a shame.

Speaking of, a friend sends this great clip of Dana Perino. She didn’t know what the Cuban Missile Crisis was.

Call me dense, but

is there a point to this post?

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘press on’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” Calvin Coolidge.

In the battle of Bushies v. Conservatives, I stand with the conservatives.

up Erick. There absolutely is a point to refuting the Bushies. They are still relevent and will try to support the establishment RINO against the conservative come 2012. They have done enough damage to the Republican brand

Whole heartedly agree, as well.

Dana Perino disapproves handling of fish

katesmith Tuesday, September 15th at 8:25PM EDT (link)

Some media types went to Alaska a couple months ago to interview Sarah Palin. Mrs. Palin was observed handling fish in conjunction with a business she and her husband have. Discussion ensued including Dana Perino saying on TV in effect serious politicians should not be seen handling fish.

I have no illusions that I’m to the right of W and Dana Perino but I like Dana. I think she was a great press secretary. I don’t think Fleischer or Snow outperformed her… or at minimum the gap in performance level was minimal if they were better. She’s great compared to Gibbs without a doubt.

The quotes from that book don’t sound like W. It smells more like trying to generate book sales a la Tom Ridge. I don’t know the dude.

Just think it’s an unfair swipe at Perino. Point could have been made without the dig.

I agree with dforston.

While I don’t agree with everything Dana Perino says, and certainly had my disagreements with many of the things President Bush did, she always struck me as a more-than-competent Press Secretary on a par with Snow and Fleischer. If you don’t like “the Bushies” then, yes, let’s nominate, work for, and elect solid conservatives. But we’re going to need to bring the middle along, and we won’t do that by creating enemies where they don’t exist.

BTW — I believe KO used these excerpts on Countdown tonite to further attack our side of the aisle. Can we please stop supplying ammunition to our real adversaries?

If you think about it Matt sounds right...

Dana is going overboard….

Here is a piece by Byron York…
http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/politics/Questions-about-Bush_s-conservative-principles-8243811-59271787.html
——————————–
The revealing moment, described in “Speechless: Tales of a White House Survivor,” occurred in the Oval Office in early 2008.

Bush was preparing to give a speech to the annual meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC. The conference is the event of the year for conservative activists; Republican politicians are required to appear and offer their praise of the conservative movement.

Latimer got the assignment to write Bush’s speech. Draft in hand, he and a few other writers met with the president in the Oval Office. Bush was decidedly unenthusiastic.

“What is this movement you keep talking about in the speech?” the president asked Latimer.

Latimer explained that he meant the conservative movement — the movement that gave rise to groups like CPAC.

Bush seemed perplexed. Latimer elaborated a bit more. Then Bush leaned forward, with a point to make.

“Let me tell you something,” the president said. “I whupped Gary Bauer’s ass in 2000. So take out all this movement stuff. There is no movement.”

Bush seemed to equate the conservative movement — the astonishing growth of conservative political strength that took place in the decades after Barry Goldwater’s disastrous defeat in 1964 — with the fortunes of Bauer, the evangelical Christian activist and former head of the Family Research Council whose 2000 presidential campaign went nowhere.

Now it was Latimer who looked perplexed. Bush tried to explain. “Look, I know this probably sounds arrogant to say,” the president said, “but I redefined the Republican Party.”
——————————-
Redefine he did!!!! Look where we are….

Sounds like Bush to me….

I don’t think anyone in the middle would want to vote for drunken sailors.

Note: I think Bush was better than Jimmy Carter or Obama….. But I don’t think he was great… I am neither a Bush fan or a Bush hater….

I give President Bush props for Chief Justice Roberts, Justice Alito, and his prosecution of the War on Terror (particularly the surge in Iraq), and negatives for signing BCRA, the expansion of Medicare/Medicaid, and approving the the auto bailouts (among other things). There was a response in the NRO Corner to Dana Perino’s post saying we should all take a deep breath and wait for the book to come out prior to judging it — I think that’s good advice which I intend to take.

The Bushies

michigan Tuesday, September 15th at 8:43PM EDT (link)

are only a click above the McCainiacs. Maybe.

Half the harm that is done in this world
Is due to people who want to feel important
They don’t mean to do harm
But the harm does not interest them.
Or they do not see it, or they justify it
Because they are absorbed in the endless struggle
To think well of themselves.

T. S. Eliot

Perino didn't read it very closely

JTAnderson Wednesday, September 16th at 1:29AM EDT (link)

Both “examples” she used in her NRO post are just incorrect.

From the excerpt:
The president, like me, didn’t seem to be in love with any of the available options. He always believed Hillary Clinton would be the Democratic nominee. “Wait till her fat keister is sitting at this desk,” he once said (except he didn’t say “keister”).

Also from the excerpt:
“I’m trying to remember if I’ve met her before. I’m sure I must have.” His eyes twinkled, then he asked, “What is she, the governor of Guam?”

Clearly Perino either didn’t read very carefully or is deliberately misrepresenting what Latimer wrote to set up two straw man arguments.

Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

this fight is incomprehensible to me and I bet I am not alone.
Dana Perino seemed to be okay as Press Secy.
She was a lot better than the Jerk Tony Snow. Yes, I know he died. He was a jerk about Ramosd and Compean and he was a pro-amnset squish GOPer.
He didn’t live with the fall-out from illegal aliens.
So lets snatch defeat from the jaws of victroy so some insiders can mae 4,875 bucks on their great book.

Loyalty

skat Wednesday, September 16th at 1:53PM EDT (link)

I agree - why ridicule Dana Perino? As I understand it, Dana convinced President Bush to more vigorously defend his policies and administration. Not only was that a move in the right direction, but it was long overdue. Was she absolutely the very best press secretary in the history of the US? Probably not, but I think she did a good job.

Frankly, I admire Dana for immediately coming to the defense of her former boss. Obviously her admiration of and respect for President Bush is mixed with a dose of affection. I doubt that Dana agreed with her boss on everything, who does? Still she has enough class to put herself in the fight against this attack. I know when I’m angry, quickly reading something, quickly responding, I may not get the exact words correct, etc., but that isn’t intentional.

I don’t know anything about “Latimer”, but I am sick to death of people using their positions to make a buck. I don’t consider disloyalty to the President, who HONORED YOU by giving you a job in the White House, admirable. If Latimer disagreed that strongly with President Bush, as well as feeling that ineffectual, Latimer should have resigned. Latimer could have worked for the policies he supported and the President could have had a loyal staff member. Instead, Latimer chose to stay in the White House, gathering any unfaltering material he could so he could get rich and famous attacking President Bush. Tacky, disgusting, shameful!

I am a very conservative Republican. I disagree with President Bush on many things, but there was much he did that was wonderful. If Latimer , exhibiting self-promotion, disloyalty, dishonor and perhaps, perhaps a little fabrication, is hailed as “ONE OF US” and is considered one of the best and brightest - we’re in trouble. I thought Red State upheld moral values. How would anyone at Red State, including posters, view someone who betrayed their trust, used their position to gain info, and then wrote a self-promoting, money-making book?

Frankly, it's disgusting

irishgirl Wednesday, September 16th at 4:33PM EDT (link)

If you’ve had a job in the White House and then you go out and spill your guts by writing a “tell all” book, you’re a loser. I don’t care what side of the aisle you’re on. And no, I’m not a “Bushie”. I just believe people should have some couth and some dignity.
