Reality Check on Joe Wilson

SC02_110.jpg

The left has made a lot of hay over Joe Wilson’s opponent’s stellar fundraising since last Wednesday. But what about Joe and what about his district?

I’m told that Wilson now has collected just under $2 million dollars online and has “mountains” of mail to be opened with lots of checks there. As I said the other day, a lot of the people who’d be most inclined to give money to Joe are people like my sister and the secretary at her church — they are ‘thank you note’ and stamp activists who’ll send Joe a nice note and check in the mail.

Those notes are just showing up and the pile of mail is flooding Joe Wilson’s office. They can’t keep up from what I hear.

But what about Joe Wilson’s district? It’s one thing to make hay out of his opponent’s fundraising, but looking at the Almanac of American Politics, it appears leftists are wasting their money.

The voters of the 2nd Congressional District have returned Joe to Congress regularly with over 60% of the vote except in 2008, which was a terrible year for Republicans. Even then, Joe Wilson beat his opponent 54% to 46%.

His opponent in 2008 was Rob Miller, who is his opponent this time too. This happened for Joe in 2004 and 2006 when his opponent was Michael Ray Ellisor.

For leftists who think they can get closer in 2010 than in 2008, consider the trend in the 2nd Congressional District. In 2000, then Congressman Floyd Spence still received 54% of the vote. In big election years, which 2000 and 2008 both were, the Republican drops to the mid-50′s in the 2nd, but still wins.

The 2nd Congressional District of South Carolina has a Cook Partisan Voting Index of Republican +9. The leftists may have lined Rob Miller’s pockets, but conservatives across American are keeping Wilson flush with cash.

Wilson will only grow in popularity in his district and will now have gobs of money to throw to other campaigns — a generosity that Wilson is known for among the Republican Conference.

For once I agree with Roger Simon of Politico who called the Wilson debate a “Rude Herring” that is distracting the Democrats from health care.

But as long as the Dems are fixated on this, they are not ironing out the details of the bill, nor are they persuading consituents of its merits.

So, I guess people should just keep propping this up. There is no way Wilson loses that seat in 2010. Wilson, wilson, wilson, Blah, blah, blah.

Just look at what they do (or want to do) with our tax money.

    Republicans are kicking @ss! Ginny Brown-White(Fla) & Candice Wilson(Migh)
Rocked it. Common theme: Joe apologized, President graciously accepted.
Let’s move on. Clyburn was the only D that spoke– sounded completed moronic. 15 minute vote in progress.

We WANTED the netroots throwing away their money, remember? Every dime that they give Wilson’s opponent is a dime that isn’t going to the DCCC or DSCC. They’ve, what, given $1.5 million already? That’s at least three seats right there.

We could have gotten them up to 2.5 million at least. But noooooo…

    ;)

Liberals are just throwing money away on a safe Republican seat. Since resources are finite, this takes a few million away from races that are true toss ups.

I guess you could say the same about Republicans sending money Joe Wilson’s way also, I would much rather that $2 million go to conservative candidates in tight races. $2 million is a huge sum for a South Carolina House seat, in addition to the funds he’s already raised.

My guess is even if Joe Wilson didn’t raise a penny from this episode, he’d still win his seat by 10 points in 2010.

Maybe Wilson will use the extra money for a PAC to help other Republican House members.

I’m glad to hear that Wilson is generous! I think within 2 weeks we will all see that Joe is very safe, and he will start writing out checks to the NRCC and candidates in the tough races.

He’s a new hero to the Right.

In fact I saw several Palin-Wilson 2012 signs at the march. Heh.

I Wilson cant win this seat with 2 million in the bank, maybe he doesn’t deserve to win. GOP has other races to address. Plus, the other guy will look like he is being funded with carpetbagger money and does not have the district at heart.

is Michael Johanns of Nebraska, for sponsoring the anti-ACORN resolution!

It would seem there are some courageous people in our ranks who should be boosted for national office beyond the non-starters of Huckabee and Romney.

Wilson could be one, Johanns another.

I would think that the right thing to do would be to encourage the useful idiots. Money is a scarce resource; any money given to whatever numbnut is opposing Rep. Wilson is money not given to a more “worthwhile” cause. We should also stop giving to Rep. Wilson at this point, speaking of strateigery.

Who’s up for setting up a Facebook group dedicated to the “defeat” of Joe Wilson?

  • redtillimdead

Joe Wilson will probably have over 2-3 million CoH, about 1 millions for his own election, 2 mil at the most. The rest he will spend helping other Republicans

  • Raven

Spending money on Wilson’s opponent that might save another election.

Boy, wouldn’t it be nice if they lost an election or 2 elsewhere because of the money they are spending on these 2 and then lost these 2 as well?

I could have sworn someone else posted that same feeling somewhere when discussing Reid. I’m pretty sure…

Joe Wilson’s District (SC-2) is actually the 2nd most vulnerable district held by a Republican in the Deep South, with the first being Cao’s New Orleans District.

Also, 7 Democrats in said Deep South Represent districts that are more Republican than the 2nd in presidential elections, so I wouldn’t count him safe based on just his district.

Though the likelihood of the Democrats winning here is very slim in 2010, simply because health care loses politically in suburban Columbia, and the general anti-Democratic trends of the coming year.

If Wilson’s action during the president’s address to Congress turns out to have been a good political move, then won’t other politicians start copying Wilson and doing something similar at future presidential addresses? Wilson’s success indicates the need for the House to strengthen its rules so that we don’t start resembling the British parliament.
