So spake the One and his minions.

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘press on’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” Calvin Coolidge.

Yeah. Recession is over. Depression is here to stay. nt

Being a citizen of the world,

I’m happy that Rio de Janeiro will benefit from having the Olympics. After all, the Olympics haven’t ever been held in South America.

A couple points

Neil Stevens Friday, October 2nd at 2:09PM EDT (link)

The IOC is a corrupt, anti-American body. I’m glad their filth won’t be giving us trouble again like we had in SLC before Mitt Romney fixed it.

The Olympics creates economic activity in the same way breaking a window creates it. It’s a dislocation, not an actual growth of the economy.

Plus a failure for Obama and his radical left-wing agenda is a victory for American prosperity. The more he is weakened, the better.

Want to run for conservatives? Give.
There Is No Crisis

And where was he when his ilk were rooting for failure in Iraq?

ciscoguy Friday, October 2nd at 3:08PM EDT (link)

We root for Obama’s failure so that Obama may prosper (and yes, the Olympics would be nothing but an expensive headache). They root for high death tolls to win elections.

Well put Neil!

throwback59 Friday, October 2nd at 4:19PM EDT (link)

I was going to say the same thing. Your first point also describes the UN (w/o the Romney part). I’m sure most Americans wouldn’t miss either organization if they never again were on American soil.
Paul is right on our march to irrelevance though. We haven’t been able to keep Obama from getting Cap &Trade, Health Care Reform, Immigration reform & closing Gitmo in his first 8 months. Yup, he got them all right away without any trouble.
Irrelevance, Indeed!

I take no joy in the sense of defeat felt by half the normal, every-day Chicago residents who wanted the Games to come to their city, even while I’m certain it was in their best interests.

Many of us Chicagoans

illinoisconservative Friday, October 2nd at 4:45PM EDT (link)

would have liked to have the Olympics here, but not at the expense it would likely have escalated to. Every major project in Chicago projects comes in for at least double the original estimate..We have some of the highest sales and other taxes in the country and we just don’t need more to fund this (all while lining the pockets of Daley’s friends).

I take no joy either.. but I do say.. “phew!”.

They might as well have awarded the games to Detroit by giving it to Rio

BlackConservative Friday, October 2nd at 4:46PM EDT (link)

For all of everyone’s talk about the crime and problems in Chicago, giving it to Rio is the equivalent of saying no to Chicago because of problems and then giving it to Detroit. Chicago has its problems, but it is a beautiful American city. Rio is nothing if not more than a cesspool for crime. Chicago would have done well.

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven.-Jesus Christ

BlackConservative Saturday, October 3rd at 12:33PM EDT (link)

Kidnapping, murder-its all there. And in fact, I’ll even link you. Rio is known for its high crime rate, especially crimes against…wait for it…tourists! Say what you want about Chicago, but as someone who lived in Chicago, it is a very safe city. There is horrific crimes that happen in almost every major city. Chicago is not a only a beautiful and clean city, tourists are more than free to walk down our beautful streets with no fears of crime. Rio is South America’s New Orleans, criminals, looters and kidnappers.

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven.-Jesus Christ

Yes. Crime is a problem.

Flagstaff Sunday, October 4th at 12:39AM EDT (link)

But life is about more than crime. And safety demands more than just observing crime statistics. I imagine that Munich in 1972 was considered a pretty safe city to be in for the Olympics. As for Detroit and Chicago v. Rio, I bet they are both safer than the Brazilian city, and I bet Detroit’s crime statistics are better than Chicago’s.

Pilgrim’s picture shows another reason Rio will have problems with the games, though–it is mostly hemmed in by the ocean and the mountains. Not high mountains, but inconvenient ones when it comes to building more stadia.

I understand they fell through on their promises to build more hotels for the Pan American Games, too. Don’t know when that was.

But here are the real considerations. First, Rio wasn’t chosen instead of Chicago. Chicago was eliminated for whatever reasons, and Rio was later picked to host the games.

Second, most of what would be built to accommodate the games in Chicago would be a waste of money. The buildings, etc., would not be cost effective relative to future needs. How can I say that? Because if they were, they’d be built without the Olympics. In other words, we would be diverting money from whatever else it would be used for to build Olympic structures that would serve no preferred future purpose.

Third, we don’t have any money to waste on bread and circuses. Every dollar we would spend on the Olympics would be borrowed from the future earnings of our children and grandchildren and their grandchildren. In effect, we’d be taking money that should be used for their benefit (it’s their money, after all), and spending it on a movie and popcorn. Not my idea of responsible government, or responsible parenting.

about those inconvenient hills...

pilgrim Sunday, October 4th at 11:56AM EDT (link)

You may notice in the photo on my previous comment some housing on left side up in the hills. This makes for a convenient break between the olympic village area that probably will be set up on the beach and the criminals living in the favelos in the hills. I agree with you that Rio is not safer than Chicago and Detroit. It just looks a lot different, and has a more beautiful picturesque harbor.

It is a great advantage to a president, and a major source of safety to the country, for him to know that he is not a great man.Calvin Coolidge

Compare the two harbors.

Rio certainly does not look like Chicago or Detroit. They have slums in the outskirt hills called favelos. They will have a problem to solve with the criminals up in those hills, but I believe they can manage this problem.

Here's why Obama's / Chicago's failure doesn't bother me

Jack_Savage Friday, October 2nd at 3:11PM EDT (link)

First, I feel sure that due to the total financial catastrophe that the corrupt Chicago Olympics would have been, the American people would have been called on to bail them out. It is the new American tradition - massive transfers of wealth to Blue Cities. As American taxpayers, we have to look at this as dodging a big bullet.

Second, I hate bullies. Hate them. Chicago has certainly produced or given shelter to quite a few of them, from Capone to Daly to the Jacksons to Wright to Ayers to Farrakhan to Emmanuel to Obama, not even counting the run-of-the-mill mob and union thugs. I am glad to see them get a collective crack across the bridge of the nose with a baseball bat, because it is only them that would have benefitted - not the good people of Chicago. I hope this is but one of many in the near future, not only there but in other cities run on fraud and corruption.

It is sad that the normally hapless Europeans felt that they had be the ones to deliever the whack. Maybe they are more able to recognize corrupt frauds and tyrants than we are, since they have seen more than their fair share.

Olympics in Chicago=Redistribution of Wealth

JHancock Friday, October 2nd at 4:11PM EDT (link)

If you look at the majority of cities who host Olympic games and World Fairs, they rarely ever break even on the investment. So…who wins then?? The answer is LABOR. The building of an Olympic village and the temporary influx of visitors for a region may not generate enough tax revenue for a state to justify it, but lots of blue collar workers get government money that comes from the pockets of their countrymen. So essentially Olympics in Chicago=government redistribution of tax funds to construction in Chicago at our expense. For the country, it’s break even at best in terms of overhead costs vs Olympic income. But for labor its lots of new jobs and construction–so basically the Olympics would have been a bailout of Chicago construction companies.

Ask any company that exhibits at Chicago's McCormick Place about corruption.

Common_Cents Saturday, October 3rd at 1:56PM EDT (link)

Standard trade show budget for any company is a few hundred dollar stack of fresh $20 dollar bills. That is the only way you get anything done by the union guys there. They ride around in golf carts 2 to a cart. They’ve lost some major trade shows to Orlando and Vegas because of the complaints.

Dear Mr. Waszak:

Third Street Friday, October 2nd at 4:13PM EDT (link)

It might behoove you to consider what Chicago’s chances might have been had not the full force of Obama’s singular arrogance come raining down upon Europe.

Alienating our traditional allies, you could say, Mr. Waszak.

It is no accident that not only did Chicago not win in the face of an unprecedented lobbying effort from the President of the United States, the sausage-shaped First Lady of the United States, and a liberal talk-show host the size of Iowa; it came in dead last.

Just who lost the Olympics, Mr. Waszak? Who screwed the pooch on this great job-creating opportunity and prestige-builder for Chicago and the U.S.? Granted, none of it would actually have happened for another seven years, but it could still have been a benefit, because the way your President is going it’s not unreasonable to expect this recession could still be going on in 2016, is it, Mr. Waszak? How’s all of this Hope working out for you?

You see, Mr. Waszak: less than nine months in, your President is the most colossal and immediate failure in the history of the office. Every day, he makes a greater ass of himself, and every day more people in America and around the world are opening their eyes to who this man really is and the truth of the crippling, narcissistic evil that he represents. Every day, more people are rejecting him, you, and everything you stand for. Every day is another rip in the tattered, garish circus poster of Hope and Change; every day another ray of sunlight breaks through The Magic Of The Man and falls upon the core of the dark, filthy, hateful lie that is Barack Hussein Obama.

How’s that working out for you, Mr. Waszak? It wasn’t supposed to be happening this way, was it?

I know how it’s working out for me: I’m grinning from ear to ear. Because you and your kind will know irrelevance, sir; for most of the rest of your lives, you will be more familiar with it than any of us could ever possibly imagine. The pain that our country has to endure in the short term will make us stronger in the long term, and the long-term prospects of those of you who thought you could tarnish and destroy everything this country ever represented are very, very poor indeed.

Your children will live under conservatism, Mr. Waszak. We…. will bury you.

“WE” didn’t lose the bid for the Olympics - Chicago did. Don’t you remember, your Prez has been going around the world apologizing for what a sorry country we are - why would anybody want to hold the Olympics here?

In any event, no doubt most of the money generated would have gone to Chi Town mobsters, er, politicians, for furthering the careers of NAMBLA sycophants like Kevin Jennings or neo-communists like Van Jones. No thanks.

And this,
“The [sic] would bring in well needed jobs, ya know. Since this country is in a recession and all.”

You know genius, if you and Prez Obeyme were really interested in jobs, you would end the capital gains tax, end the death tax, cut marginal tax rates, cut 50% of the non-sensical red tape on small businesses, repeal Davis-Bacon, cut special treatment for unions out of ALL govt contracts, restore the pre-JFK ban on public employee unions (especially the NEA and AFT), return to the dream of Martin Luther King by eliminating minority based set-asides and quotas, reform all labor tort laws of the last fifty years, etc, etc, etc, or any ONE of the above.

But you aren’t really interested in jobs, are you? Just self-aggrandizment and self-righteous proclamations about “justice”. What a bunch of creeps…

Hey Paul!

Since the IOC is comprised mostly of Europeans and since Obama’s been dissing our European allies (I hope their still allies to us, the American people, if not Obama) while cozying up to dictators as well as telling the world how rotten we are why wouldn’t they vote Chicago into last place?

I’m not cheering so much for the USA losing an Olmpic bid, I’m cheering for President Arrogance getting his hat handed to him for once.

Karma sucks, don’t it Mr. Pesident?

In addition, Poland is part of Europe (can anyone in the Obammie admin read a map?) The mostly European members of the IOC are acutely aware (having suffered in similar fashion themselves for many years) of the death and destruction brought about by socialist dictators and Chicago style bully boys like Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin and Krucschev. They are in complete sympathy with the Poles and their continuing struggle against Soviet aggression.

So, Prez Obeyme, your recent snub of Poland on the 70th Anniversary of the Russian invasion has now come back to haunt you. Let’s see, how did your former “pastor” put it, “The chickens have come home to roost.”

Karma does indeed suck…

We Are Not Cheering The Loss Of The Olympics...

we are happy that a huge deficit will not be created in Illinois (or in DC for that matter) to build the venues from which we will all have to watch the steroid pumped hermaphrodites run their races.
