Senate GOP Folding Over Health Care Reform [updated]

I am told quite reliably that in a meeting today on Capitol Hill, Republican Senators began to rapidly move toward concessions on health care because they are afraid they cannot hold their members. Some Republicans are now thinking of supporting a government program.

Go to the action center and start calling.

Already, Senate Democrats are looking to pass healthcare by attaching it to unrelated legislation — the back door Brian Darling has repeatedly warned us about.

Republicans are starting to waver on this.

Call now. Tell the GOP to stand firm in opposition to the Democrats’ health care plans.

[UPDATED:] I’m hearing this evening from both some Senators in the room and staff that the fears of GOP caving are overblown and we should not be concerned.

First the NRSC funds RiNOs, now the existing RiNOs want to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

I’d call my Republican Senator if I had one, but I don’t. Some of us here in Colorado plan to change that in 2010.

  • Marcus_Traianus

Funny, I was in DC last week and a source on the Hill told me there was no way this would get passed with a public option- Reconcilement Process or otherwise.

Now they are trying to pick off the Republican slackers because the votes in their own party are not there.

    Despicable.

Any word on who or why? We can probably speculate some, but i want to know who these folks are, and if they are being supported by the minority leadership in this decision.

  • bags64

Republicans are afraid they cannot hold their members in line?

I’m sure Lamar Alexander is one of the waverers.

  • Third Street

and I’m not even slightly worried about him caving.

Mary Landrieu will vote no because the Dem leadership will allow her to; indeed, may require her to. Her next election is 2014, the year AFTER Obamacare would take effect, so this atrocity will be very fresh on the minds of Louisiana voters. If I were Harry Reid I’d take every possible step to protect her, knowing I had any number of Republican squishes available to make up the vote.

The Butt Bombing Democrats have given the stupid Republicans the detonator and the dummies are ready to push the button and blow up our health care!!!! Time to start calling people!!!!!

It must be those Republicans who wished they lived in Hawaii.

We’re screwed, folks. Our people in the Senate are helping.

Any fake republican (a real Rep. would not vote for it) voting for this castrophy should be thrown out of office ASAP.

Both my Senators and Rep. 09 here in VA are Liberal Dems licking Obama’s feet so their votes are in Obama’s bag.

VA the past two election cycles have gone Dem with some real fishy smelling election precinct counting. The major liberal population centers on the east coast and northeast around DC are always holding out untill the last to report. VA is all computer voting so their is no excuse for this stink in VA elections.

  • Power_Pro

I just called Senator Alexander’s office shortly before reading the comments here.

He has been and continues to be opposed according to the staffer I spoke with.

  • Achance

No point in contacting Begich; he’s in the tank for Comrade Obama, and nothing I say would influence him anyway. Aren’t you guys all glad we got rid of that nasty, porky old Ted Stevens?

What is to be gained out of folding?

Are they thinking that the union thugs might support Republicans in the next election if they support this measure?

It can’t possibly be that they think it is a good bill.

I’m Going Rogue. Rogue! I tell you.

I hope people in the Senate are listening. Please hear this well:

Rumor has it that Robert Byrd has actually been dead since 2003, and was quietly replaced at that time by a fully-articulated animatronic puppet programmed to mouth lofty-sounding things about the Romans and the Constitutional role of the Senate and then call out an electronicized “yea” for every piece of America-destroying legislation anyway. (The Dem leadership has the puppet sent off to the hospital every few months so as not to arouse suspicion.)

  • Swamp_Yankee

Ever since the townhalls ended and the recess was over, liberals have been gaining momentum, while conservatives have been resting on laurels. Not sure what happened. you could sense them moving forward agressively.

i was more confident about Corker than Alexander.

  • janis

on 99.7 FM in Nashville. He’s not voting for the Health Care thing, and doesn’t think it’ll pass. He’s against the cap and trade thing, and for nuclear energy.

  • peg_c

DeMint is my fave senator now, esp. after seeing and hearing him in D.C. last month during the miniscule, not-worthy-of-coverage (according to the idiots in the Drive Bys) rally and march. We saw and heard him and Pence at the Armory on 9/10, too.

Must be nice having a senator you can respect.

  • peg_c

according to Rush today. Obama holds Medicare up as the standard. Ha.

  • sybilll

I, too, was confident about Corker, not so much on Alexander. When something hot like this happens, I can never get through to either, but, at least Corker responds, when I resort to e-mail. Thanks for the info.

Rubio will have exactly what he need to get over the top and possibly win the nomination. Right now, KBH and Cornyn will most likely vote no but the reason for KBH is the fear of god when it comes to the Republican primary for Governor.

  • farstar99

    I’d rephrase that.

  • mschmitt

The alternative honestly hadn’t even occurred to me. At this point, all LeMieux/Crist can possibly do is help me decide on the number of zeros in my next donation to the Rubio campaign.

…The collapse of the current political order in this country.

    It absolutely would mean that.

Whether that would mean the collapse of one or both of the current political parties, or something much darker than that, I couldn’t tell you.

But the ‘center’ would not hold if this happens.

And, if it happens, every politico in this country better get lots and lots of bodyguards…

  • http://hillbillypolitics.com Steph C

Just those reliable few the Dems always count upon. However, for a group of politicos that are usually so poll driven, they’re going to vote against the American people who they swore to serve.

Or perhaps it will be the people who declare war on the Senate via the elections. No matter who does the declaring it’s not going to be pretty.

  • JustLeaveMeAlone

If ANY of my CongressCritters vote for this, I will work against them.

Tomorrow, you guys be loud !

Call early and often and everyone !

Less than a month ago, we had all of Congress running scared. They are now being sweet-talked and wined and dined by those that have something to gain by government care; only the people who had to go back to work will be the losers.

Put those job tasks off, come down with pig flu symptoms !

You and those you care for will live with the passing of this, I think one day here and there of filling inboxes and voicemails is a great return to keep your healthcare, yours.

  • The_Gadfly

as revenue neutral. With that as cover the usual suspects are returning to their natural habits.

There is some bad news in the CBO bill, but the fringe media will bury that. CBO says illegals will be covered. They also say that even after fully implemented we will still 6% of the population (18 million by my calculation) without insurance.

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/10/07/cbo-release-cost-report-sweeping-senate-health-care-reform/

This has to die in the Senate, the rules are too easy for Comrade Pelosi to manipulate in the House.

  • JustLeaveMeAlone

I’d say more, but we have rules here about language.

  • Praying

Well, RINOs. I just got done calling Alexander and Corker’s offices – I don’t trust them at all on this. Just what we need. ALL THE RINOS MUST GO! I was not politically active until 1 year ago – please forgive me for 50 years of apathy. But more and more people, like me, are waking up.

  • Praying

Since he is trying to remake the Republican party, why don’t we point out how stupid it is to negotiate with evil liberals(Democrat party)? Why does this have to be my team? This makes me so sad.

  • Spartan4Life

    Dear Senator McCain,

I am writing you even though I no longer live in Arizona. I am writing you because you purport to be some kind of leader of the Republican Party. I am writing you because the word on the street late in the afternoon today is that Republican Senators are about to fold a winning hand and hand the Democrats a victory that the American people will have shoved down their throats and made to chew on for the next 30 years.

I have tried to tell people you are way to smart to let that happen. I am sure you have correctly seen that the American people do not want more big government solutions to Health Care or the other challenges we face. The American people by a wide margin favor market based reforms which put individuals more in control of their own lives and well being. I am sure you understand that.

I am not saying defeat the Democrat Party just for the sake of claiming victory. Defeat them because they are wrong. Please reward my faith in you.

  • crosley

I can understand (but don’t condone) a Republican giving in on an issue if it’s incredibly popular (like say increasing the minimum wage), but this health care bill is incredibly UNPOPULAR. There is no “political” plus for a Republican to vote for this.

When you look at the polling, even a majority of Democrat voters are against it, and a HUGE majority of independents and Republicans oppose it.

Couple that with the fact that I don’t see any Republican, even in a really liberal state, lasting through a primary if they join Obama on this issue. It’s an instant career-ender.

I think this bill will end up like amnesty, where all the elites said it should pass with bipartisan support. When it came time to vote, however, it crashed and burned and lost by a huge margin. Politicians (even really liberal ones that wanted it to pass) didn’t want to face angry constituents.

  • Spartan4Life

If there is one thing we can count on from the Republican Party it is to do really stupid stuff.

If our team(think of the Detroit Lions if they played politics) knew what the Hell they were doing we wouldn’t be in this pickle.

  • durman

and called Senator Voinovich of Ohio and checked his take on the public option. His staff assured me he would not be voting for any “health bill” with a public option.

Not bad… Seems like most of the time, retiring Republicans tend to screw us.

  • ranthony

I seem to recall you going to bat for The One and issuing a line to the effect of “this does not contain Medicare cuts.”

However, a hundred and 27 billion smackers would beg to disagree.

Not that I’m surprised any, mind you.

  • Spartan4Life

Here’s how this is going to go down. The Senate is going to pass the “deficit neutral”(hahahahhhahhhaaaa) Senate bill, which doesn’t have the “public option”(hahhhaaaaaahhhaaaa). Then this is going to conference where the bill that will be agreed to will look mostly like the House bill. They may change the wording to make it seem like it is some sort of compromise but it will be Big Government Health Care, alright. It will go back to the Senate, they’ll get a couple of liberal Republicans to go along, and, Voila!, we’ll have Socialism and America will be on a slow road to obsolescence. Thanks Democrat Party!

  • drfredc

If one is led by RINOs chasing socialism, it shouldn’t be a total surprise that one ends up without enough intelligence on how to unstick your horn from the butt of the donkey ahead of you and head off in a different direction.

Most of them believe the unwashed masses will not actually get involved in the political process as precinct committeemen (and of course they won’t tell you about the ffact that half of the PC slots nationwide in our Party were vacant in 2008).

They’ll take their chances that the status quo will remain as is. Half the precinct committeemen slots in the country will remain unfilled. Apparently not enough of the sign holders and costume-wearers at the Tea Parties, and the shouters at the town halls, have bothered to take the next step and actually join the Republican Party as precinct committeemen. And I’m not surprised. Most of the people I ran into at those venues don’t even know what a precinct is. They don’t know who elected Michael Steele. They don’t know the difference between a legislative district and a congressional district.

    And the congresscritters know this.

The only thing they fear is a resurgence of participation by conservatives in the precinct committeemen ranks. Because they know precinct committeemen are instrumental in deciding who wins the primary elections. Apparently they don’t see any huge surge in participation. So they’ll take their chances and vote whichever way they think will allow them to survive a primary challenge in a Party that, on average, across the country, remains split about 50-50 in the PC ranks between conservatives and moderates, and is at only half-strength because only 50 per cent of the available PC slots are filled.

They won the primary the last time under those circumstances. Therefore, they figure, they can vote whichever they think is best for their reelection prospects, the Constitution and their oath be damned. Because, if the status quo remains, history tells them they have about a 95 per cent probability of being reelected.

    Thank you.

They have zero credibility in this debate. They would sell out their own mothers to protect their little fiefdom. They are an insurance company themselves.

They love the cuts in Medicare Advantage. Because Medicare Advantage has been kicking their literal butts by providing market based solutions. All those people forced off Medicare Advantage will now have to buy AARP supplemental insurance.

AARP is the biggest whore in the brothel. I am 53 and immediately toss anything they send me right into the circular file.

  • http://www.theprecinctproject.wordpress.com ColdWarrior

implored all the conservatives in the audience to become precinct committeemen to fill up those 50 per cent of the slots that are available?

    Oh, they didn’t say that?

    I wonder why?

Because even they are afraid of a HIJACKING of the Party by real conservatives — even they fear getting tossed out in a primary by a real conservative alternative. And their friends in the internal Party leadership slots getting booted in the internal Party elections in which the PCs — and only the PCs — vote.

    Thank you.

No he wouldn’t vote for it, the financial impact was too draconian, especially in this weak economy. Sounded good. Then he started talking about how he did think, however, that some legislation needed to be passed in the future to severely curtail carbon dioxide emmissions so he would be working faithfully with members of the opposition party to draft and pass such legislation.

Graham was ralling agnaist the Bacus bill and the CBO scoring of the bill on Cavuto. He was rightly pointing out how the CBO score is based on the bill staying as writen and being implemented as such, which he doubted would be because nobody would vote to keep the medicare cuts or the taxes on medical equipment going. If GOP Senators were really folding I think Graham would be one of the first to change sides. Though those who have fence sitting GOP senators representing them should keep the pressure on.

If the GOP caves in here they are just begging for a third party to materialize in 2012 if not 2010. I changed my voting registration to no party affiliation back when they controlled congress and went on a spending spree. Just being not as bad as the Democrats just isn’t good enough.
