I’ve been asked to comment on the RNC’s new website.
Here is all I care to say:
It is not as bad as some would have you believe and not as good as the RNC would have you believe. But don’t miss the big picture — it is more than a website, it is a platform with a real and usable API. Therein lies its potential.
I can’t bring myself to spend more bits or bytes on it.

If it needs changes, let’s contribute some constructive ideas.
We can’t leave any stone unturned in trying to recapture the initiative. The party polling gains of late have, I’m afraid, been the result of unhappiness with the Dems, not an endorsement of Republicans. We need to change that.

Norton Raised Over a Half Million In Sixteen Days
Swamp_Yankee Wednesday, October 14th at 12:25AM EDT (link)Thats more than Buck and Frazier did in three months. Bennet has a 2.3 million dollar war chest, but may have a nasty primary. I believe Frazier’s highest office was city councilman. Even if he is good and you like him that’s a huge jump. I cant see anyone running for US Senate without some solid state experience.
I am learning more about Norton, but she is a force and is already beating Bennet by as much as nine in the polls. It could be an easy pick up. I know she may be considered an establishment candidate, but her fundraising says she’s popular.
Frazier needs some seasoning and exposure. The House is a good place for a term or two. Maybe he can eye Udall in 2014.

But hey, she’ll be sure to vote for the next stab at a HLA or FMA, and that’s all that really matters, right? I mean, it worked out so well for Marilyn Musgrave in CD-4.

Of course I read the comments.
NightTwister Wednesday, October 14th at 10:46AM EDT (link)I’m a blogger here in Colorado and I know how things work. Do you think I just fell off the turnip truck? I’ve had people I know very well tell me flat out that Frazier is pro-choice. I’ve talked with him personally, and can tell you there would be no difference between his votes and those of Norton on life issues. There’s a huge struggle right now between the single-issue values voters and the fiscal conservatives in this state. One side or the other is going to win out here.
Do I have concerns about Frazier? Yes, I do. I had intended to address those concerns, but now there’s no reason to do so. I live in CD-4 and he’s likely running for CD-7 or Lt. Gov. What I do know about him is he’s a fiscal conservative and wants smaller government. That’s what we need most of all right now. I also know that Jane Norton will be a big government Senator like we had in the Senate from 2000 to 2006. If that’s what you’re looking for, Jane’s your gal.
As for me, I’ll be supporting Ken Buck, a strong fiscal, social, and law-n-order conservative.

NosferatusCoffin Wednesday, October 14th at 12:40AM EDT (link)I have been a programmer for over 20 years, have been doing web design for over a dozen years and run a small web design business myself.
My take on the new site:
- They committed a Cardinal Sin right off the bat. You should never have to scroll down below the fold to get to content. Bad design there.
- The menu dropdowns are both not needed and are way too large. They should list horizontally, not vertically and should not take up so much space when hovered over.
- The color scheme is very blah overall. White, grey/blue and red is not a good combo. It should be a vibrant red, white and blue. Those colors are both the most pleasing to the eye as well as being the most flexible to work with.
- The sidebar is clunky, the margin padding too wide and the text for the dates compared to the actual content text do not mesh well.
- A better font and font size could have been used. This is most apparent in the posts and comments themselves.
Frankly, I could have been a better job on this with a couple of free weeks of notice. It looks like that they used a canned Wordpress template and only tweaked it a little bit.
I have not tried to join the site, (not that would I ever join the RNC, I told them to go to Hell awhile back as they will never get a dime from me as long as they are the frontmen for the McGOP), but seeing that several people are already having performance issues with it, that makes all of it’s shortcomings look all the worse.

A helpful suggestion would be to include voices from the current multiple debates over conservatism in the pages. Frum, Douthat, Larison and Postrel just had a good conversation the other day with some good things to say.No need to agree or settle on one but to let the voices be heard.
Not bad
ciscoguy Wednesday, October 14th at 12:51AM EDT (link)It’s a good, modern looking site that fits in with the idea of re-making the Republican brand and cleaning out all of the statists masqurading as conservatives.
I like Michael Steele. I wish he could articulate his points more like someone like Charles Krauthammer, but he’s pretty good and has his moments. Democrats have had a death grip on the black and other minority votes, and he’s the right person to try and connect with them and learn they’ve been voting against their interests (you could even throw the LGBT in there, if they value economic and national security over homosexual marriage, of which our president is not a proponent, lest anyone forget).
We really need to hammer them on the truth about African-American issues and explain how Democrats have simply transferred their subservience from slave owners to the state. Remind them that it was the Republican Party that was founded by the abolitionists. Remind them that MLK was a Republican. Remind them that the pro-abortion politicians they vote for result in a slaughter of black babies at a disproportionately high rate. Remind them that there are black students just like Sasha and Malia who are denied the opportunity to go to their school because Democrats like Obama are beholden to teachers unions. Ask them how much good Democrats have done them in liberal strongholds like Chicago. I wonder how many black kids got mowed down in the Chicago streets while I wrote this. Ask them if they want this country’s finances to look like California’s.
The pervasive thing about the statist’s message is everything they want to “give” people, but people don’t care enough to examine all the strings attached - and those are things the statist certainly doesn’t want to reveal. We want to give them opportunity - they want to give them a check. We need to start exposing them for what they are - freedom robbing slavery merchants.

blaze422 Wednesday, October 14th at 7:08AM EDT (link)Why does the list of accomplishments of the Republican party end in 2004? The “Heroes” section is laughable with the overt attempt to show all our great minority heroes. The “Faces” of the GOP at the top left of page is also curious … why so few caucasian faces?( If you go to the drop down page of faces they can be found (LOL)) Some Madison avenue kid will soon add the obligatory kid in a wheel-chair. Couldn’t they find any lesbians etc etc?
I confess that I raced thru the site, maybe their is more meat there…I saw pablum. For instance, I think the “what we believe ” should be prominent not just a tab on a drop down.
I realize this is beta, but not impressed. If I directed any of my liberal friends to the site, it would be a waste of their time.
Pakistan and the Taliban
bk Wednesday, October 14th at 7:17AM EDT (link)This isn’t worth a diary, but since this is an open thread…
Via Reuters:
Since Obama recently said that there is a rightful place for the Taliban and his goal is to basically have a draw with Al Qaida, shouldn’t the US be expressing outrage at this Pakistani assault?
Another GOP fail IMHO
bk Wednesday, October 14th at 7:46AM EDT (link)As someone else pointed out, there is WAY too much wasted space at the new site. We’re used to dealing with a ton of stuff on a screen, be it almost any other website in existence or while watching ESPN, FNC, etc. It makes it look amateurish to me.
On to open thread territory, I’ve said this a bunch of times here before, but I can’t freaking believe that the GOP is never reminding people about Obama’s campaign lies about health care premiums, especially since the insurance industry report gave them a great opening to bring it up. I just sent the following to Cornyn’s office. The GOP is blowing it as usual.
Especially with the report that Obamacare will drive health insurance premiums through the roof - which, as the GOP Finance Committee members pointed out yesterday, the CBO could investigate if allowed to do so by Democrats - why isn’t the GOP reminding people of yet another broken Obama campaign promise? On multiple occasions (see examples from two debates below), he promised that the average family would see a $2,500/year reduction in insurance premiums under Obamacare. So even if premiums stayed the same, which they obviously won’t, that’s already a $2,500 increase for us working families over what he promised. WHY ISN’T THE GOP REMINDING PEOPLE OF THIS ALL THE TIME? Is there anything that would hit home with the average working American more than to be reminded that Obama is already taking an extra couple hundred dollars a month out of their pockets even before adding the increases from Obamacare?
From 2nd debate:
“So here’s what I would do. If you’ve got health care already, and probably the majority of you do, then you can keep your plan if you are satisfied with it. You can keep your choice of doctor. We’re going to work with your employer to lower the cost of your premiums by up to $2,500 a year.”
Video: between 49:30 and 50:00 here
Note that right after that he mentions that people will get the same kind of plan as he and McCain have, but of course the Democrats have voted down all amendments to put the Democrats in the same plan they are foisting on the rest of us.
From 3rd debate:
“So here’s what my plan does. If you have health insurance, then you don’t have to do anything. If you’ve got health insurance through your employer, you can keep your health insurance, keep your choice of doctor, keep your plan.
The only thing we’re going to try to do is lower costs so that those cost savings are passed onto you. And we estimate we can cut the average family’s premium by about $2,500 per year.”
Video: between 55:30 and 56:00 here
Again right after that he makes it sound like the plan for the public will be equivalent to the plan for Congress.
Excellent point.

Had some time this morning
Trelaina Wednesday, October 14th at 10:13AM EDT (link)and wandered around the site. Apparantly the old login I had on gop.com is gone, so I had to re-register. There is no link that I can find to the state GOP websites (one link says “states” but it links to some sub-social group which for my state has 8 members). That seems to me to be a big hole in their strategy. If they want more people involved, great, but they should be encouraging local level participation.
Donate button is nice and large though
On a related note, I finally found an email for a GOP committee chair in my county and contacted them (I’ve had phone numbers forever, but I’m lousy about picking up the phone and calling *anyone*). Hopefully this will be the start of my getting more involved….

The new site is fail.
onlyme Wednesday, October 14th at 2:28PM EDT (link)The site takes over a minute to open on my 3 meg symmetrical connection, the banner is a field of red, nothing to break it such as GRAPHICS except a few faint stars and a HUGE DONATE button. The space between the banner and actual content is huge, I have to scroll down to see content that should be visible in the tab. When I tried to get the jobs page, it was inoperable. It is still inoperative 24 hours later. Why would jobs be under housekeeping anyhow? Sounds like the GOP wants all workers to be maids, butlers or janitors. NOT professional.
The favico (the little icon that represents the webpage in the address bar) looks like a little monkey! When I try to register and click on the continue button on page 2 it does not advance, just kicks me back to the main page. The header on page 2 says that it has created the membership, but unlike any reasonably well written website it does not show me as logged in when I am kicked back to the main page instead of getting redirected to the 3rd page as should happen.
I use IE 8, and it does eventually render tho yesterday it was down off and on all day. It seems to me that whoever was paid to create this has not earned their money. It is unfinished, unprofessional and of limited use. Where is the DIGG or STUMBLEUPON recommendation button? Why so much unrelieved RED? Where is the US FLAG, the CONSTITUTION, the BILL OF RIGHTS?
I am truly unimpressed with this effort. Disgusted with it might be a bit more accurate a description. Has the GOP fallen so low that the national committee can’t even get a webpage to work? How much money was wasted on this half-finished debacle anyhow?
