God help us. Another Obama advisor is defunct in the head.
Robert Spencer has the top story at Human Events today about this one.
Dalia Mogahed, Barack Obama’s adviser on Muslim affairs, appeared on British television last week, where she said: “Sharia is not well understood and Islam as a faith is not well understood.” How have we misunderstood Islamic law? We have associated it with “maximum criminal punishments” and “laws that… to many people seem unequal to women.” The Western view of Sharia was “oversimplified,” said Barack Obama’s adviser on Muslim affairs; most Muslim women worldwide, she said, associate it with “gender justice.”
Here’s some gender justice straight out of the Koran, the Islamic holy book that forms the basis of Sharia. As I explain in my book The Complete Infidel’s Guide to the Koran, the Koran declares that a woman’s testimony is worth half that of a man: “Get two witnesses, out of your own men, and if there are not two men, then a man and two women, such as ye choose, for witnesses, so that if one of them errs, the other can remind her” (2:282). It rules that a son’s inheritance should be twice the size of that of a daughter: “Allah (thus) directs you as regards your children’s (inheritance): to the male, a portion equal to that of two females” (4:11).

It's a good thing
chimikes Tuesday, October 13th at 11:10AM EDT (link)we have the bible to set things straight:
1 Corinthians 11:3 “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ and the head of the woman the man”
1 Corinthians 11:8-9 “For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man”
and 14:34-35 “Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.”
Ephesians 5:22-23 “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands as unto the Lord for the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church…”
I could keep going on but I think the point is made. It is very easy to look through any religious text and find absurd, hateful and bigoted sections. None of the western religions can claim a monopoly on sexism, they’re all pretty equal in that regard.
Yeah, the Christians have shown their distaste for women...
DONTREADONME Tuesday, October 13th at 11:29AM EDT (link)the Catholic Church actually tells the men that women can not speak at church or sing. You didn’t hear the Pope actually put out a fatwah against the women infidels that dare argue with their husbands or appear out in public without the escort of a male. Just utter bigotry coming from the Catholic church these days.
“The UN is right? you can’t be any more “un”; Than you are right now, the UN is undone, Another mushroom cloud, another smoking gun, The threat is real, the Locust King has come, Don’t tell me the truth; I don’t like what they’ve done, Just give me ammo for the United Abominations”-Megadeth
BTW, that was sarcasm-nt

Now where is the context...
manfred Tuesday, October 13th at 1:38PM EDT (link)I know it is here somewhere…
First of I think you have a warped view of equality. Equality does not mean we all get to be pro football players or be beautiful women. Does the Bible set roles for Man and Woman? Why yes it does. Does it say one is better than the other or worth more than the other? Nope.
And I think you entirely missed the flip side of Paul’s message. For the man to act as Christ then he must lay down his whole self to serve his wife and family as Christ laid down his life for the church. This relationship model only works when Christ is in the mix and that is the context you are missing.
I can go on and on about chapter 14 but I do not want to start a religious debate.

Except that the Letters by Paul
Cargosquid Tuesday, October 13th at 3:08PM EDT (link)are not used as the rule of law today. What western religions can make a claim on is the fact that, unlike Sharia, western religions now promote freedom and equality.
You're right
chimikes Tuesday, October 13th at 11:38AM EDT (link)just ask any of the female priests, bishops or cardinals about gender equality in the Catholic church.
I know it has to be fun to take a few
Streiff Tuesday, October 13th at 12:14PM EDT (link)instances, that you don’t apparently understand beyond using them as proof texts, and claiming a major tu quoque victory.
All you’ve succeeded in doing is demonstrating your own profound ignorance.
Are you seriously contending that Catholics or Orthodox restricting their priesthood and deaconate to men, or for that matter the Armed Forces restricting women from being assigned to the combat arms, is somehow equivalent of making a woman’s testimony worth less than a man or governing a woman’s inheritance, or requiring the use of the hijab, or not allowing women to drive, or limiting the education of women?
“A man does what he can and endures what he must.”
Equality is as equality does...
Read Chesterton in New Improved Jersey Tuesday, October 13th at 12:35PM EDT (link)The ordination of female/gay/lesbian/transgender/agnostic priests and bishops seems to be going just fine for the mainstream protestant denominations. Not. But going there would be tantamount to a threadjack. The subject is Sharia Law.
The bible passages you cite (out of context) have manifested in Western Culture via men living and dying, willingly and bravely, in the defense, security, and protection of women - not just their wives and daughters, but women..
Sharia Law, OTOH, no so much. See OP for reference.
“Nature is not our mother: Nature is our sister. We can be proud of her beauty, since we have the same father; but she has no authority over us; we have to admire, but not to imitate.” - G. K. Chesterton, “Orthodoxy,” Chapter VIII.
next time try reply to this, coward...
DONTREADONME Tuesday, October 13th at 4:16PM EDT (link)I would appreciate it if you would reply to someone speaking to you rather than cowardly putting your having to have the last word elsewhere. BTW, we like our Bishops and Priests to be men and our nuns to be women, but of course to you you only see division and groups. Thats how a liberal and statist thinks.

Now I know you're not cherry-picking
aesthete Tuesday, October 13th at 4:37PM EDT (link)No female priests in one denomination of many out of Christianity! The horror! (Esp. when you consider that there are several women among the canonized saints in the Catholic church.) Meanwhile, Iran’s religious police are hard at work stoning gays and drowning women who won’t “submit”–same difference, right?
