Is Robert Wexler Under Criminal Investigation?

Yesterday, unexpectedly, Robert Wexler (D-FL) resigned from Congress. No one saw it coming. One of the suggestions is that he may be up for the ambassadorship to Israel. But it makes little sense for him to resign before confirmation, let alone the nomination.

Based on a Charlie Crist campaign manuever, I’m wondering if Wexler might actually be facing an indictment and trying to get out of it.

Charlie Crist is closely connected to Alan Mendelsohn, a Hollywood, Florida eye doctor and big time fundraiser for Crist. Mendelsohn was on Crist’s gubernatorial transition team and is a close friend. Unexpectedly, authorities recently arrested Mendelsohn and several others in a serious corruption probe.

To distance himself from Mendelsohn’s taint, Charlie Crist, acting as Governor trying to save a flailing Senate bid, called for a statewide grand jury investigation of government corruption.

In the news article, there is this curious line:

Crist and Florida law enforcement officials said the statewide grand jury would not interefere with ongoing, federal investigations in Broward County and elsewhere in South Florida.

Wexler’s district is in South Florida and covers parts of Broward and Palm Beach Counties.

Hmmm . . .

Little bit of a stretch no?

nickinvirginia Wednesday, October 14th at 3:13PM EDT (link)

I read he quit because he is starting a Israel oriented think tank in DC, and the ambassadorship has also been thrown around. Other members of Congress have resigned to either go into lobbying or some other private sector job. Was it Hastert (?), who resigned early to join a lobbying firm?

I don’t like jumping to the conclusion of “criminal” once there is an unexpected resignation. The same rumors were thrown around about Palin’s resignation, and, up until this point, those rumors turned out to be false.

what we can not speculate? BTW see IJB comment?

DONTREADONME Wednesday, October 14th at 8:42PM EDT (link)

golly, it never stops. Since when are we not allowed to speculate or that only left for the left. Or is it only when you approve of it. You’re pathetic, As IJB said, waaahhhh. Go to the bed the adults are talking now.

nickinvirginia Wednesday, October 14th at 10:59PM EDT (link)

Read what I wrote, because I’m speaking about my own opinion. In no way am I saying that no one should speculate, however, personally, I like to have evidence before I leap to conclusions.

Asking for evidence before labeling people criminals is being a cry baby? And withholding judgment until the facts are sorted out means that *I’m* not an adult?

Speculate all you want buddy, but as I said, the same speculation went into Sarah Palin’s resignation. Speculation that turned out to be false.

So, yes, I will be withholding judgment, and no, that doesn’t make me a cry baby. It makes me the adult. :)

nickinvirginia- are you back again?

I would have thought that the replies you got to your comments on the “Taking down the Birthers Diary” would have taught you something about this site. Alas, not so much.

From your posts here, and reading your past posts, I am convinced you are “Nick Skias” who has some interesting posts at the RPV site. I may be wrong, but, I don’t think so. Your bio here says that you are a Libertarian. It seems that you haven’t yet figured out what you are, or, you are not what you claim to be.

In the last link you say-
“I believe there is a time to raise taxes. I believe there is a time to limit gun ownership. I believe there is a time to allow abortions.” So Mr. Nick, if you are the same Nick, how do you square raising taxes, and, limiting gun ownership to be in line with the Libertarian Party? How do you square any of that with the Republican Party, unless of course you are a McCain Republican, then I understand. In that case, you are posting on the wrong site. I think I can safely say that the majority of us here don’t believe in higher taxes, abortion and we surely are all for gun ownership rights. What say you? I will await your answer, though, you seem to hit and run.

No...no I am not...

nickinvirginia Thursday, October 15th at 2:17AM EDT (link)

I am not “Nick Skias” I have no idea who Nick Skias is. There is probably many people named Nick who consider themselves Libertarian.

But answering your questions to this other Nick:
- No I don’t think taxes should be raised. Taxes should pay for infrastructure, national defense, and to establish some bear minimum social safety nets for those who are unable to fend for themselves (i.e., orphans, the extremely retarded, demented senior citizens, etc.) I also like the idea of consumption taxes instead of an income tax, but I haven’t gotten a chance to look that into it.
- Gun ownership is a fundamental right. The State, however, does have a compelling interest to prevent convicts or people with mental disabilities from receiving weapons. I think that is just common sense, and so does the Supreme Court (See DC v. Heller).
- Marijuana should be legalized. It would decrease the cost of incarcerating non-violent offenders and would generate revenue.
- I don’t think the govt. should be telling gays they can’t marry, and gays marrying doesn’t effect me whatsoever, as long as any laws specifically rule out forcing religious organizations from performing these marriages (which would, in itself, violate the 1st amendment and has been specifically ruled out in states legalizing gay marriage).

….and no…I am not Nick Skias….

What do you think about government devalueing private property (as in 2000 friends of Oregon) to buy it for “environmental land” then siezeing it! They call it purchase, but after devalueing it, it’s been declared almost worthless! Then posting it –NO Treaspassing –public property! For Greens only!! I was taught that both the Articles Of Confederation and The Constitution prohibited government ownership of more than 2% of the land! Total ownership is Communism and partial ownership is Socialism! This concept is The Kings Forest A La England! I don’t think Teddy intended the Nat Park amendment to cover ALL of America!

umm

nickinvirginia Thursday, October 15th at 11:12AM EDT (link)

Well I haven’t heard of that case. I am in law school, and I took property two years ago…but I know that government has eminent domain, however, in order to take land from private hands they have to pay the fair market value. So, if they devalued land - i.e., the market didn’t devalue the land, but the govt. purposefully did - then I would not agree, obviously, and those land owners should have taken the govt. to court to get paid the fair market value.

As far as the Articles of Confederation, well, those don’t matter anymore after the Constitution was ratified. Also, I haven’t seen anything about the government not being able to own more than 2% of the land. The Federal and State governments certain “own” more than 2% of our land - Yellowstone, state parks, ANWAR, etc. - but I don’t know if you would call that “owned”.

If you think about it, all the land within the nation is “owned” by the nation, because then eminent domain would make no sense right? Because if the govt. didn’t have some type of control over the nation’s land then how could they literally take it? I can’t go to my neighbor and say, here is the fair market price of your land, now i am taking it. No he would need to sell it. the govt., however, can take it without the owner’s consent as long as they pay the fair market price. Now, I’m not sure this theory is what eminent domain is based on, but I think that’s the logic behind it…again, its been 2 years since i have taken property.

As far as govt. taking by eminent domain, it is something that usually creates a lot of hardship. I come from the Bronx, NY, and the Cross Bronx exprwy was literally built through an entire neighborhood. The NY govt. uprooted thousands of people, and disrupted the entire economy. The also purposefully built it between the black and white neighborhoods. It was the 60’s. NY tried to do the same thing to downtown Manhattan in order to try to buid a highway through, what is today, “the village.” It was practically the only battle Robert Moses lost in building NY’s infrastructure…and thank God, because the Village is a very cool and unique place in NY. Great music, great bars, and very ecclectic people….and now i’ve gone way off into a tangent lol

Forts, post offices, and customs houses are all

Achance Thursday, October 15th at 11:29AM EDT (link)

The Constitution specifically mentions. And, if you actually believe this statement, “If you think about it, all the land within the nation is “owned” by the nation,” you should seriously think about asking that law school for your money back. East of the Mississippi, “the Nation” owns almost no land.

In most of The West, the federal government is simply an occupying power. When statehood was conferred all the lands in the territories should have been conferred to the newly formed states but the federal government retain much, most in some, of the land. Less than a third of the land mass marked Alaska on your map is the State of Alaska; the rest is federal or Indian land. Almost 85% of Nevada belongs to the federal government. Public lands were once available for the common good as range land, commercial forests, mining and oil provinces, etc. They now are truly the King’s Forest not only off limits to development but off limits to all but the very well-heeled. My State is touted as having American’s wilderness crown jewels, but most of Alaska’s wilderness grandeur will never be seen by any but bureaucrats and the very rich.

As to the poster’s point about government devalueling land, it is done constantly. All it takes is a whisper of an eagle’s nest or some other critter or a bog that could be considered a wet land, and your land has just become worthless.

In Vino Veritas

thanks

nickinvirginia Thursday, October 15th at 11:50AM EDT (link)

The Constitution specifically mentions what? 2% ownership? Like I said, its been awhile since I took property, so let me explain what I meant by them “owning” the land. They have soveriegnty over it, and that would have been a better word to use. Without soveriegnty, eminent domain wouldn’t make any sense. Also, eminent domain can only be used if the land will be for public use. So, I agree with the concept, but I’m sure it is abused. The State is powerful, and they aren’t bulldozing homes in the rich areas to build that highway. There was some case in New Hampshire, I think, that Souter penned that had a lot of people up in arms, but I can’t remember what it was about.

Well when the the Progressive left got their Iron grip back in the early part of the last century

Richard Mullins Thursday, October 15th at 12:04PM EDT (link)

you could tell somethings wrong. The progressives decided to make land inaccessible to development because they thought that it was going to go away. That was a big mistake and now we many years later are paying the price. One look for me in East Texas would should how much land they own. I’m thankful that they don’t own more, but I’m sure they don’t anything else that the want to preserve. We would be better off if we could get rid of that iron grip but that’s easier said than done. With the last 30 or so years of listening to the Sierra club and other stupid organizations, it’s gotten even worse. Yes, the spirit of the Progressives are alive and well in America.

nickinvirginia Thursday, October 15th at 11:28AM EDT (link)

I think it does give me the best. I’m only 25, and I’m from NY, and never really bought into the whole social conservative thing. To me, it just doesn’t make sense and is incapatible with true Liberty. But I mean, the vast majority of my age group is socially liberal, so I’m certainly not an aberration,

As far as govt., it should be small and efficient. It should protect, but not burden. For instance, in the market the govt. should have a role protecting consumers from abuses, but other than that their hands should be off it. Judge Richard Posner of the 7th Cit. actually made this analogy - sort of - after the crash last year: You want your animals to roam as free as they can, so that they can get fat off the land. But you don’t want them running off that cliff, or down that sink hole, so it is necessary to fence them in to an extent. Likewise, govt. should prevent monopolies from stagnating competition, they should enforce strong anti-fraud legislation, and try to prevent asymetric information, so that the consumer can know all they can about the product (think SEC filings).

We should have faith in our govt., and elect competent leaders who will put policy above poltiics. Policy should be based on emperical data compiled by the scientific method. Govt. should be objective, but it isn’t. There was a reason why Washington was against political parties. And what I can’t stand is watching Democrats or Republicans refusing to join an initiative of the other party, because their party is against it, even when they know it is a good idea. Nothing gets done because each side is simply trying to stab the other in the back in order to win majorities in Congress, and then the whole cycle repeats. Its really tiring, and its certainly the reason why our govt. is so inefficient. People imply have preconceived conclusions because of the letter after their names, and simply won’t listen to objective evidence because of it. It makes no sense, and it happens on all sides of the aisle. I’m tired of it.

– unlicensed trapping and collection of insects and small birds and mammals
– local unexpected and violent wind currents wherever he goes
– To Wile E Coyote. DON’T GO IN THERE!!!! YOU *KNOW* THERE’S A TRAIN COMING!!!!

Wexler, much less fun. :(

I think it was Virginia, which isn’t abnormal (they’re all in McLean), but his residence in FL was his mother’s. which is abnormal. I expect the Congressman who live outside the DC metro area to live around the DC metro area, but their primary residence should be in their home district and be theres, or else they aren’t really representing their state.

Also, is it true you don’t need to live in the district to rep it? During the NY-20 race lastspring, I remember hearing that the Republican didn’t actually live in the 20th.
