Rush’s Rams

Elisabeth Meinecke has the top story at Human Events today. It’s about Rush and the Rams.

For all the fuss over Rush Limbaugh’s attempt to buy the NFL’s St. Louis Rams franchise, you’d think he’d been torturing dogs or accidentally firing pistols in nightclubs.

Oh, wait: those are the players. All Rush Limbaugh has done is work hard for decades to build his personality and radio empire to dominate conservative talk radio. Yet, less than three months after the NFL conditionally reinstated a convicted felon, some of its associates and fans are complaining because Limbaugh wants to buy the Rams.

This group of critics includes an assortment of football players, the head of the NFL Players Association (DeMaurice Smith), and, of course, the Rev. Al Sharpton.

You know, it says something pathetic about the left that Rush Limbaugh has been on the air 3 hours a day, 49 weeks a year, for over 20 years and they have to resort to made up quotes to hurt him and his business endeavors.

What is even more pathetic is that the NFL has shown greater tolerance for murderers, drug dealers, rapists, and dog killers than a talk show host.

The Rams go into Sunday a couple days short of a year since their last win. Instead of being embarrassed that they are earning nearing $2M a player on average despite completely sucking, they would find it embarrassing to have Rush Limbaugh being the person overpaying them. Go figure.

They want to see Rush, and all he stands for, fail. The NFL owners and management have other reasons to be concerned. Mark Cuban had some insight.

This isnt about Free Speech. Its about the NFL protecting their business. There is no reason to put it at risk. If Rush were to retire from his show, or become a local DJ in Sacramento, or just about anything else he may want as a vocation, then I dont think they would have any problem with him being an investor in a team.

Given the current set of circumstances, they would be crazy to approve him as an owner.

Controversy sells in a lot of places, but that’s not the NFL’s business model.

  • mustango

Rush is saying right now he won’t give up and I certainly believe that, but when you have as many powerful enemies as he does, willing to basically go to war against the NFL if they dare to admit him into the Owners’ Club, I’m not sure if that’s a battle that even he can win.

This is the sports league, remember, that took a Super Bowl away from Phoenix just because the state of Arizona hesitated to adopt MLK Jr Day as an official holiday. If they can do that, it’s hardly a stretch to think they’ll similarly be pressured into vetoing Limbaugh buying into the Rams.

If (when) that happens, we’ll have to see if Rush has a Plan B.

  • LibRick

some kind of direction and I agree that they have highly compensated players that don’t mind sucking for a living.

I don’t agree with Rush on politics but having listened to him over the years, I know he has a passion for football and is quite knowledgeable. Isn’t that what players who wish to win would want in an owner?

Leave the politics out and give the man a team. He’s earned it and I imagine he would sign some pretty hefty paychecks to make the Rams a winner.

  • WarEagle01

I can understand this coming from murderous drunk Rick Sanchez, or Chrissy Matthews and his leg, or Jesse “Hymietown” Jackson, but with the people who consider themselves “legitimate” journalists doing this. It’s mind-boggling. I mean, I knew it was bad. I guess I just didn’t think it was this bad.

Wow, just heard Rush talking about Chrissy Matthews and his leg saying that Rush should put a pellet gun in his mouth and pull the trigger. Stay classy, Chrissy.

  • tedpomeroy

He is spending the entire show griping about it.

He should be expounding on the Dem’s plans for Medicare.

  • Kyle-MI

If they are attributing false racists quotes to him, (although I am not a lawyer) sounds to me like a strong case for defamation. Rush certainly has the resources to hit back.

Olbie called out his critics as one of the worst persons in the world, and this article quoted him as saying that if they were going to start having character tests for owners, there would only be 3 of them left.

My God, (like Human Events also said), I can’t believe I’m about to say the next four words: Keith Olbermann is right.

The current NFL Commissioner makes the statement that he doesn’t see Rush as an owner… from the Reuters blog post: “Commissioner Roger Goodell has already cast doubt on Limbaugh?s viability as an NFL owner, saying that ?divisive comments are not what the NFL is all about.?

Its also been stated elsewhere that the NFL is fiercely protective of its brand and would blanch at what Goodell calls a ‘devisive’ figure being in a position of responsibility.

Well Mr. Goodell, apparently you haven’t been thinking about your brand recognition when you have reinstated convicted felons in the League now have you?

For example, Michael Vick should be nowhere near the NFL… not even a security guard at a stadium for his actions. The NFL players have always been considered role models for the youth of America. Can it be said that people make mistakes and they learn from their lessons? Sure they can… however the lesson that also needs to be taught is that there are consequences to those actions. In this case he went to jail for a few years, however, considering the role he plays to the youth who watch football closely, the price should’ve been much higher.. meaning you do heinous acts, you stand to destroy your future… instead they have the example of yea… you can still go to jail and ‘get paid!’

Frankly, I find the hypocrisy of any of those in the NFL making derogatory commentary on Rush’s bid for the Rams staggering given the recent acts on the part of the players AND the NFL.

I think Rush would bring some real class to the organization, and more than likely, much needed focus on the Rams themselves. So far everything Rush has touched has turned to gold… Goodell would be wise to consider that before putting his foot in his mouth.

    Good Day,
    Juggernaut

PS… Reuters was running an impromptu poll where 65% of the respondants felt that Rush is being treated unfairly by the NFL… On the wrong side of this one are we?

  • billyd

If you really want to get into how the NFL is looking the other way on vick. Just remember… Vick Bankrolled an entire dog fighting ring with the money he earned from the NFL. So by letting him back in, are they saying that they are ok with giving him more money? Money that he once used to break the law?

  • Illinicon

because they did know they were false when they started them. Hopefully he hires a PI to trace the source, although I think everyone with half a brain knows who it is already, Media Matters and George Soros. It would be nice if Rush could get a nice settlement or jury award from Soros and then donate that money to get as many Reganites as possible elected to Congress and state houses as possible.

  • http://www.werushdaily.com Rightshift

… just what other crimes might be financed right now with “NFL Money”… it boggles the mind.

  • Kyle-MI

I am somewhat aware of the public figure precedent for defamation, but this situation seems so blatant. These are professional news organizations that are suppose to fact check things like damning quotes. You and I know that they are jokes, but this is what they claim. If anyone with half a brain is able to find out that these quotes are false, then the only conclusion is that these professionals are knowingly publishing false quotes. Trying to deny someone ownership of a sports team because of their political views seems fairly malicious to me. Of course, finding an impartial jury is a huge problem.

    Fellow Patriots,
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Tex) She is trying to dictate to a private business on who can be an owner and who shouldn’t be. She is trying to hinder the liberties of a private citizen (Rush Limbaugh). Spread the word I know you probably already herd but sped the video around to keep people informed. Sheila Jackson Lee is a fascist and needs to be removed from office.

it appears to me that malice was the intent of repeating the rumors on the airwaves of news networks. Especially given the simplicity of the method that could be used to determine if the quote had any bearing on the truth. That is, the MSM has the time and resources to scour the archives of the Rush Limbaugh show for any justification to the claim made. It could be shown that intent of malice was indeed the intention of the MSM by quoting obviously bogus sources with no confirmed location of the evidence. It is a cricular reference that tails off into infinite with no real connection to factual evidence; therefore, it can be said that the media ran with the story with the intent to injure Rush financially, not to mention Chris Mathews inuendo the other night about fantasizing about the death of Rush to CO2 gas pellet.

  • DONTTREADONME

this country has devolved into a disaster. A country where people can not stand anyone else getting ahead, nor if you have to much screw your dream we do not like you.

They can lie with impugnity and with no accountability, this country has no justice left in it. Rather it has officially devolved into a constant shakedown by groups that pool there money for the sheer purpose of controlling you and forcing you to think what they want you to think. If they can’t make you think like them, they will make sure your kids are brainwashed into the way they want you to think.

A country that glorifies debauchery and psychotic behavior as diversity. Whats the point? You know what, you can have your NFL not much of a sport in my opinion, everything, I mean everything has been destroyed in 18 years, and only the last 8 years did I have a chance to do anything about it. Whats the point, the bar has been set, complain and use bogus quotes and you will punish those that you disagree with. Arrrgghhhh, PATHETIC. BTW, enjoy liberals you really did a wonderful job didn’t you, just classy jerks.

case law has defined as what malice means.

I am glad his bid failed (sarcasm off)…

Can he buy the Royals with George Brett instead? Please.

  • Slade

Rush has gone out of his way to make himself a controversial figure over the course of his career and he’s done very well for himself that way. Now he wants to buy into an industry that is completely uninterested in being in any way politically controversial. It isn’t really that surprising that they wouldn’t want to sell to him.

  • bk

because he might not play the game of “Hey let’s threaten to move if the taxpayers don’t pay for most of the new stadiums we’ll use to get even richer!” game.

  • booksum

I’m genuinely surprised that Rush didn’t see this sandbagging coming. The Sewer dwelling MSM and assorted Democrat Scum hate him with a passion and would eat glass if it meant they could harm and/or destroy him.

The St Louis Rams need money if they want to improve and ultimately suceed and are turning away a multi-millionaire who wants to pump money into the club. Rush Limbaugh is not leading the consortium, he will not be there as a spokesperson for the team, he just wants to put money into a sport which he loves. He has shot himself in the foot by creating all this controversy which has now ultimately blown up in his face. The Rams will need to find money from another fan it seems.

  • keivan

Rush is opinionated and provocative, which is what makes him so popular with some. These traits have led to his being wildly successful, but anyone who is like that is bound to be controversial, and the NFL hates controversy. They just want to make tons of money using taxpayer subsidized stadiums and be left alone otherwise.

I do find it somewhat interesting that the NFL has no problem allowing Keith Olbermann to do “Sunday Night Football”. Redstaters should watch him on this show every week and raise h**l over anything controversial that he says.

  • virgil

and the sport is still growing.

  • http://www.werushdaily.com Rightshift

I know this would be beneath him, and my lesser angels are getting the better of me at the moment, but this would’ve been the perfect trap for the MSM…

They’ve libeled and slandered him in the past and its done nothing but benefit his ratings and business, but now this same actions on the part of the MSM have destroyed a business deal where hundreds of millions of dollars were on the table, and they used fabricated quotes to do it. Now a Libel suit against the players involved has major teeth and the punitive damages would be enormous. Rush may end up owning a portion of MSNBC or CNN… now wouldn’t that be ironic? These same liberal reporters would scream bloody murder as security would summarily dismiss them with a toss out the door. LOL

Now there is a made for TV movie in the making… never mind “social justice”… here comes… “Poetic Justice” ;)

  • http://www.werushdaily.com Rightshift

… that blunt truth would be so controversial… crazy times indeed.

Black is white, up is down, in is out,… sounds all very Biblical to me since He stated this would happen.

  • http://impudent.blognation.us/blog kyle8

but it is virtually impossible for a celebrity to win slander and libel suits even with all the manufactured quotes.

  • http://hillbillypolitics.com Steph C

He has shot himself in the foot by creating all this controversy which has now ultimately blown up in his face.

Pray tell how it’s his fault that the MSM used fabricated quotes to torpedo his bid to be part owner of the Rams.

Or are you saying he should never have mentioned out of fear of what the MSM would… and did… do?

  • Warrior

like Carrie Prejean received when she answered a question in what the likes of Sheila Jackson Lee perceived as an unacceptable fashion? “Can you imagine a poor girl, scared already…” Yeah Ms Lee, I think we can imagine it. BTW, did you make a big stink when Perez Hilton was chosen to judge the pageant in which Miss Prejean participated? I didn’t think so…

And I love her opening comment, “Even though I’m for the first amendment and everything, but…” Yeah, but when it allows opinions to be voiced that contradict whatever the h*ll she believes. What a fraud…

And she doesn’t know why, “other than the big dollar, why Rush Limbaugh would be interested in the NFL?” Maybe it’s because he is a former sportscaster, or maybe a big fan? Indeed, the one thing Rush DOES NOT need the NFL for is “the big dollar.” Could this woman be any more uninformed?

    And this:
“I would hesitate to say, that he is not one someone who brings people together.” Good, she should hesitate to say it. However, I would not hesitate to say that SHE is not someone who brings people together.”

Now she wants “a criteria, a standard, a bottom line of integrity…and looking at values that are not political…” Oh Yeah? Since when has anyone in the professional civil rights leadership wanted anything like that? The Connecticut firefighters case? The Anita Hill facilitated “high-tech lynching” foisted on Clarence Thomas? The Freddie’s Fashion Mart fiasco in which innocent people were killed thanks to the shennanigans of the Rev Al? The Tawana Brawley Case in which respectable and innocent people were ruined? How about Henry Gates’ wild accusations? Any “integrity” there? What about the standard of Michael Vick? Maybe we could apply the “criteria” and “standard” used to falsely villify the Duke LaCrosse Team?

Frankly all this fuss over a bunch of coke-snorting millionaires who have often and accurately been dubbed the National Felony League escapes me. Heinrich Himmler wouldn’d be too tainted to own a gang of these overpaid thugs…
