We have a lot of readers and fans in Tennessee (not to mention Leon) and after reading this article by A.C. Kleinheider I think it is time for all of us nationally to focus a bit on Tennessee.
For the longest time Tennessee has elected squishy moderates state wide. Howard Baker was conservative, but in a “compromise his mother to advance his goal” sort of way. Arguably Lamar Alexander is even worse, refusing to do anything that does not advance bipartisanship, even at the expense of core conservative goals. Hell, Alexander is not even and does not consider himself to be, a conservative.
Bob Corker, who I know and like, is definitely and defiantly to the right of Alexander, but even Corker is more a pragmatist, willing to compromise on big and small issues — no doubt affected by his time as a mayor. I’m finding that municipal politics can skew one’s perspective on the need to work across the aisle.
Tennessee has never elected to state wide office rock-ribbed movement conservatives. They’ve elected George W. Bush types who have conservative inclinations, but are not conservatives. As Kleinheider puts it:
Republicans will run Tennessee but which Republicans hold power and in what capacity will make a huge difference. Traditionally, Tennessee Republicans have talked a conservative game, but there’s a difference between being conservative — adjective —and being a conservative — noun.
A movement conservative, for example, has never won a statewide primary and gone on to win a general election.
But as Tennessee grows further right and expands its Republican domination of the state next year — the GOP just took the State House and have expanded its margin in a special election — and becomes the entrenched party of power, we’re going to see more and more actual, factual conservatives moving up.
That brings me to two races.
The first is the Tennessee Governor’s race. Zach Wamp is not what I would call a movement conservative. He is a conservative and would govern conservatively, but he’s not a firebrand conservative. That actually makes him a terrific fit for Tennessee to embrace a statewide conservative in a state that traditionally has not. Compare Wamp to Haslam. Again from Kleinheider:
The moderates seem to be trying to rectify that with Bill Haslam’s gubernatorial campaign. Haslam is a true moderate — more so than either Corker or Alexander. Haslam is also much worse at cloaking his discomfort with rigid right-wing ideology. He seems reluctant to utter even the most cursory red meat rhetoric that conservatives want to hear. . . .
The big question is how much a Gov. Haslam would be like our current governor. Would he be just an anomalously successful figure, an outlier in his own party, or would he work to bring moderate Republicans like himself into state political power?
That is troubling to me. In fact, many of my Tennessee friends tell me there is little discernable difference between Haslam and the present Democrat in the Governor’s Mansion, Phil Bredesen.
As Tennessee begins its crawl to the right, I hope they’ll look favorably on Zach Wamp.
That leads me to Zach Wamp’s seat. Robin Smith, who many of you who attended our Atlanta Gathering met, is running to replace Wamp. Among Tennessee’s Congressional Delegation, Marsha Blackburn leads as the conservative. She has no real ideological soulmates among the Tennessee delegation. Kleinheider notes:
A movement conservative, for example, has never won a statewide primary and gone on to win a general election. There have been congressional members (Ed Bryant, Marsha Blackburn), but every time conservatives have stepped up for statewide office they have either been defeated in the primary (Bryant) or in the general (Jim Bryson, Van Hilleary).
Some consider Rep. Blackburn an extreme member of the congressional delegation. If former Tennessee Republican Party chair Robin Smith gets elected in the Third District, Blackburn will have an ideological soulmate with her in Congress.
Robin Smith is definitely one of us and right on all our issues. I’m excited to see good conservatives like Wamp and Smith stepping up. Haslam has a political dynasty behind him. His daddy thinks he should be Governor. We can stop him by supporting Wamp and we can give Marsha Blackburn the backup she needs in someone like Robin Smith.

Eh
drothgery Monday, October 19th at 2:20PM EDT (link)Oregon State and Oklahoma State fans are just being nitpicky to make a point on that. Same goes with South Carolina fans insisting they’re the ‘real’ USC. The overwhelming majority of college football fans associate OSU with Ohio State, USC with Southern Cal, and don’t use UT for either Texas or Tennessee.
We call ourselves the UT Vols.
TNJim Tuesday, October 20th at 12:34AM EDT (link)UT has always meant the place in Knoxville. Regional off-shoots like in Chattanooga and Martin are UT-Chattanooga and UT-Martin. But here simply UT means the Vols. I think Adrienne has a good point. There wouldn’t be a Texas if not for the sacrifice of Tenneseans like Davy Crockett.
Sorry kyle8, it isn’t hunting vest orange. The regulation orange for hunters is much brighter than the orange Tennessee uses. I think the exact shade is even licensed and patented.
But admittedly, we usually ask on Saturdays “Who’s the Vols playing today?”
rather than “Who’s UT playing today?”
This season, it’s more like “I hope the Vols don’t lose again today.”

Yes there is alot going in TN politics
toni100 Monday, October 19th at 12:52PM EDT (link)And yes, it is Robin Smith. She is the former State Chair of the Tn GOP. Robin is a Conservative. She knocked heads with Sen. Lamar Alexander a number of times not only during the 2008 Presidential election but also in the 2006 campaign of Harold Ford Jr. Robin isn’t politically correct enough for Lamar’s RINO tastes.
The good news is Robin is running for Zach Wamp’s Congressional seat and the bad news is Zach is running for Governor. I’ve personally nicknamed Wamp ‘Zip Zag Zach’. What ever is politically expedient. Haslam (who is also running for Gov) is a big government, anti-gun (who suddenly got religion when he entered the race in Jan’09 but had been a member of Bloomberg’s anti-gun mayors group) taxer.
Oh and the other bad news is that Lamar Alexander’s minions are now running the Tn State GOP making it another RINO waffling toothless group. It’s very disappointing after having Robin in charge.
I’ve already eliminated supporting Haslam and Wamp for Governor. I am supporting Lt. Gov Ron Ramsey. I wish I could say it’s because everything Ron does I’m in agreement with but he’s a far better candidate than the other 2 choices.
There are also a couple other races which might be interesting and that is Bart Gordon’s seat in District 5(contested GOP primary with 4 or 5 in the race). It looks like 2 of the candidates are viable - Lou Ann Zelnick and Kerry Roberts.
Kent Greenough is taking a whack at Lincoln Davis (District 4 and my district). I was a supporter for Kent back in 2008 and am thrilled he’s trying again. He’s a strong and knowledgeable conservative. But it is also a contested primary and the Democrats always come in and vote for this nut (Don Strong) in the primary. This is a really tough district (24 counties, no large cities, all rural and I don’t even know the number of media markets). Lincoln did make a recent strategic mistake though, he voted in support of Charlie Rangel in retaining his chair of Ways and Means.
Oh and one last thing, Adam Kleinheider of the Nashville Post professes himself to be a libertarian but I’ve yet to hear of him voting for anyone other than a Democrat. And yes, he has admitted who he’s voted for in a few elections. He voted for Harold Ford Jr over Bob Corker and Dem Gov Bredesen over State Senator Jim Bryson (a strong fiscal conservative).
I'm with you, toni100, about Zach Wamp. He's not
janis Monday, October 19th at 1:13PM EDT (link)my choice either. As with you, I’m supporting Ramsey for now unless someone better shows up. What a disappointment it is for Tennessee to be so red, yet to have so little in the way of staunch conservatives to vote for for the governor’s office. And how much I wish I could vote for someone like Ed Bryant for that position. Or Marsha Blackburn.
And Bart Gordon’s in the 6th district, which is where I live. I detest him.

Toni100, you are correct, Marsha is a good conservative
raider1 Monday, October 19th at 6:54PM EDT (link)Toni100, you are correct. marsha is a good conservative.
I live in the 6xth congressional district of Tennessee.
When Don Sundquist and the Democrat-controlled Tennessee legislature passed a bill allowing illegal aliens to obtain Tennessee driver licenses, Masha, along with Mae Beavers and Donna Rowland, led the fight to immediately repeal it. She and Donna worked long and hard to get that legislation repealed.
I know because I attended some of the hearing where Marsha (in the Tennessee Senate) and Donna (in the Tennessee House) were fighting to repeal it.
Marsha led the fight to oppose a Tennessee income tax. I only was able to make it down on one occasion from Cookeville to go to the anti-income tax protests, but on that day Marsha was out there with the crowd and I had the honor of saying hello to her.
I wish I had Marsha representing me instead of Bart Gordon.
Of the four (4) serious candidates for GOP candidates for governor, I will probably vote for Lt. Gov. Ramsey. He is a good conservative and is strong on illegal immigration. I believe he will support additional legislation to address illegal immigration in Tennessee. He strongly opposed driver licenses for illegal aliens. I know some at RedState feel differently about the subject of illegal immigration. I know, for example, that Moe Lane has blogged in the past his support for amnesty for illegal aliens. I recognize that there are differences of opinion on that subject among Republicans and that some, like Moe Lane, support amnesty for illegal aliens. However, I cannot vote for a candidate that is weak on illegal immigration.
Bill Gibbons might as well be a Democrat. I have not heard him speak. However, two Republicans I know separately heard him speak and both said he is in the wrong party. Bill Gibbons as DA for Shelby County (memphis) supported driver licences for illegal aliens. I will vote for him only if he is the nominee.
I will not vote for Mayor Haslem in the primary. I have not heard him speak. However, I heard a young man representing him speak at a Republican dinner several months ago. It was brought to the young man’s attention by multiple individuals (I didn’t even have to say anything publicly, though I mentioned it to him privately after the dinner) that he had mentioned nothing about illegal immigration. The young man said Mayor Haslem believes we already have sufficient laws on that subject. Most in the crowd strongly disagreed.
Rep. Wamp would be my choice after Lt. Gov. Ramsey. He does have a very good record on illegal immigration and he is more of a conservative than Gibbons or Haslem.
In 2007 (I believe that was the year), I enjoyed seeing a crowd in Cookeville let Lamar Alexander know exactly what they were thinking about an amnesty proposal.
Well if Marsha Blackburn is contrasted with Don Sunquist, then yeah she's conservative
Richard Mullins Tuesday, October 20th at 12:29AM EDT (link)h*ll even when I lived in TN-07(good lord what a panderer of the senior vote), I could tell that Sunquist was moderate(thankfully, I only lived there for 3 1/2 years).

Richard Mullins, what conservatives do you admire in TN?
raider1 Tuesday, October 20th at 5:08AM EDT (link)Richard Mullins, do you believe Marsha Blackburn is a conservative?
What conservatives do you admire in Tenenssee?
Do you want Marsha to have a primary opponent?
Do you oppose her attempt to win the GOP nomination in 2002 win she first ran for Congress?
did you oppose
raider1 Tuesday, October 20th at 5:10AM EDT (link)Prior post should have said “Did you oppose her attempt to win the GOP nomination in 2002 win she first ran for Congress?’
Negative, I don't oppose smart people
Richard Mullins Tuesday, October 20th at 10:31AM EDT (link)and Moderates in Conservative clothing like Don Sunquist are not smart people. You should know me better than that.

Well I do admire her, it's just that the congresscritter back 2 reps ago was a moderate
Richard Mullins Tuesday, October 20th at 8:13AM EDT (link)and that’s all. I do notice that she and my congresscritter(Ted Poe) do seem to vote alike and both are conservative. I wouldn’t get mad over some votes unless they were simply egregious. BTW, the title and the rest of the post was snarky(Super snarky).

Examine the Record
terryef Monday, October 19th at 2:38PM EDT (link)Erick-
I’m just loving your piece on Tennessee. You’ve got most of it right. And Robin can use all the Red State help she can get. She’s the real deal.
Wamp is most assuredly talking the conservative talk. He sounds convincing. But I must say, his record should be closely examined by Red State. As a three-term party chairman with Wamp as my Congressman, I know plenty about his record.
He voted for TARP, was McCain’s pet promoter for the horrible McCain Feingold, voted FOR the Rangel funding when other GOP members voted no, BROKE a pledge to term limit himself, BROKE a pledge not to take PAC money (that’s not really an issue for me, but don’t make a pledge if you don’t intend to keep it), support for PAYGO (http://www.nationalreview.com/nr_comment/staff200404020835.asp),
and then there’s Club for Growth and their amendment tests on outrageous pork spending. Back in 06 (just as one example,) Wamp scored a big ZERO. Harold Ford Jr. got over 60 percent!
I could go on and on, like his vote against earmark reform, his vote for the Democrat price-gouging bill, and on and on. But suffice it to say that before you offer any endorsements, I beg you would do some more research.
By comparison, you may end up finding him the lesser of evils, however, more research is warranted.
When it comes to conservative, I inherently trust Ben Cunningham of Tennessee Tax Revolt. Not too long ago on a post at his site taking Congressman Wamp to task on a vote, Ben stated:
“Congressman Zach Wamp is consistently the most anti-freemarket Republican in the Tennessee delegation.”
I couldn’t agree more.
Zach Wamp Needs More Scrutiny
1SGinTN Tuesday, October 20th at 3:01AM EDT (link)Thanks for enlightening us on his record. It was timely, too, because I was about to get out my wallet for a donation to him. I have heard him speak; he does SOUND good, and probably has a sizable following because of it. This really brings home to me my shortcomings in knowledge regarding local politics versus my emphasis on the national/international scene. Thanks, terryef, for the wake-up. Being out of the country means I have to try harder to keep informed. Any suggestions?

toni100 Monday, October 19th at 10:18PM EDT (link)I was at that meeting in Cookeville. In fact my friend Sherry was the on one who interrupted Alexander during his speech and the room erupted. It was such a wonderful moment to see Alexander with that look of ‘get me out of here’! It was a great morning/afternoon. My blog post got picked up by Krikorian on National Review and the discussion on Rush about the event about my friend Sherry was awesome. Alexander absolutely hated it. He’s such a wuss and RiNO.
I've said before about Alexnader
TNJim Tuesday, October 20th at 12:49AM EDT (link)sometimes I think he’s shilling to take over for McCain as the GOP’s chief apologist. His support for Sotomayor did it for me. At that point, I washed my hands of him.
I hope we can get a good conservative opponent for him in the primary when he comes up for re-election. Blackburn would be good.

Ramsay isn’t the greatest thing, either, guys. He’s done some things in his job as Lt. Gov that I’m not happy with but I guess we could do worse in the long run. Given the other choices, it can’t be absolutely terrible, can it?

mickeywhite Tuesday, October 20th at 7:59AM EDT (link)Jim my Democrat Fair Tax friend. You can have Marsha. What is the difference between a tax and spend Republican like Marsha and a tax and spend Democrat like Bart? 500 Billion?
So Marsha will spend less but she is still spending. and spending …. and spending…
I want someone that will represent me by sticking to their oath to the constitituion. Jim, you may not care that your representative votedfor the Bridge to Nowhere, but it is votes like that that add up. She came into office after 2002, ( i voted for her that only time, as she did help with the state incometax) but after her first term I saw that she was just another GOP Stooge. and she has not failed me in that respect.
She is not only the queen of pork, she wants to take our liberty, and our freedoms. just go look at her votes.
Mikey,Mikey Mikey that kind of logic
Richard Mullins Tuesday, October 20th at 10:38AM EDT (link)gets us full out and out liberal Democrats in some districts like TX-23. Really, if you lived in TX-23 in 2006 you would have gone with the rest and tossed out Henry Bonilla and replace him with the Racist Ciro D Rodriguez.
