You, Me, and New York 23

Over at the Atlantic, Max Fisher writes about my involvement in New York 23.

I’m happy to serve as a proxy for you guys, but we need to be honest — you guys did this, not me. I’m sure the Hoffman campaign appreciates your efforts. I very much appreciate your efforts.

At the vanguard of the grassroots campaign has been Erick Erickson, blogger and editor of RedState.

Erickson has made NY23 his mission. Erickson called the race “a Hill to Die On” for conservatives. He accused Scozzafava of “Funnel[ing] Campaign Cash to Family.” He slammed Newt Gingrich, Scozzafava’s most high-profile backer, writing, “Today Newt Gingrich Takes Himself Out of the 2012 Running [...] Gingrich no longer wants to nor can he be seen as a conservative.” Erickson called for Scozzafava to withdraw and demanded new national GOP leadership. He even raised money for Hoffman. The wider conservative world took note, and soon endorsements for Hoffman rolled in from Sarah Palin, the Club for Growth, Steve Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, even sitting Congresswoman Michele Bachmann.

What was a small Congressional race in upstate New York has become all-out war among Republicans, one which Erickson’s grassroots movement seems to have won.

I have said all along, the effort here is, in the best outcome a Hoffman victory, but as long as Scozzafava loses, I’m happy. Note though that Mr. Fischer makes a mistake that suggests he leans left — he calls Scozzafava a “moderate” when her record and positions suggest anything but. Ms. Scozzafava is very much a liberal.

Fisher goes on to write:

Republican leadership may be forced to accept Erickson’s message that moderate Republicans will be destroyed and only strongly conservative candidates tolerated. If they do, Erickson and his vast grassroots network will have altered the party’s electoral orthodoxy.

I’m afraid Mr. Fischer has not paid attention to my writings. I have been clear that I agree with the GOP to the extent that candidates should match their districts. I am not opposed to, for example, a Mark Kirk in Illinois, or a Mike Castle in Delaware, though I won’t lift a finger to help him. I understand that to get to 51% we have to have our share of Chris Shays’s.

But, in races like the Florida Senate and New York 23, when a conservative can win, a conservative should be supported. Conservatives are the base of the Republican Party.

I hope I have helped change the party’s electoral orthodoxy. Right now it involves telling the base to fork over the dough and shut the hell up.

We will no longer stay silent. NY-23 makes very clear that the GOP needs the conservative base more than the conservative base needs the GOP.

Awesome!

DerKrieger Friday, October 23rd at 10:18PM EDT (link)

It’s well past time that the GOP establishment was put on notice. I’m sick of them undermining conservatism. Almost every GOP failure since Reagan can be laid at the feet of moderates and RINO’s. The Left likes to demonize conservatism but seriously, when have we actually been able to implement truly conservative policy? For all the achievements of Reagan he still could have done a lot more had he not had to work with a Democrat Congress.

I want the attention seeking old guard to go quietly into the good night and leave the stage for good.

Erick - we couldn’t have done anything without the forum and action center you provide us here at RS.

I’m a proud Right-Wing Nutjob, and anyone thinking the “moderates” deserve a place at the table should go lay by their dish. Kirk in IL is a loser (don’t care about how blue IL is), David Frum is a loser. Colin Powell is a loser. Grahamnesty is a loser. John McCain is a loser. His daughter is a Democrat. Snowe, Collins, the house Cap-and-Tax 8 (including Kirk) are losers.

Conservatism is on the ascendancy.

2 More Big Endorsements for Hoffman

I just wish I could have contributed

TNJim Saturday, October 24th at 12:24AM EDT (link)

to the Hoffman campaign. I read somewhere that the average income of the average RS’er was around 80 grand a year. I’m nowhere near that. I’ll be lucky to gross 28 grand this year, before taxes. I’ve managed one contribution to the site this year although I hope to do some more before this year is out. I’m saving up for the battles next year, both the House races as well as the TN governor’s race. Plus I’m getting my foot in the door of my county GOP, to contribute my free time to the cause, even though fundage is a little short.

But I’m fully supportive of your efforts, Erick, and kudos to you for your leadership here at RedState. A big hat tip as well to Cold Warrior, whose precinct committeeman spearhead has encouraged me and others to pursue that route. Even if the committeeman slots are taken in your district the local party headquarters most likely can find a slot for you to fill.

A big round of congratulations to all who have helped the Hoffman campaign, as well as Rubio, DeVore, and many other worthy conservatives. Making the national GOP take notice that conservatism isn’t as down for the count as they thought it was is well worth all the effort.

Priceless. The Left has never understood what drives us. What we give and have to offer does not have to be bribed from us, we aren’t “paid” to carry signs, or help in campaigns or voter drives. Most of us would give all that we have to help another person, and yet we are not poor when we do that, but rich.

yourself in that category as well. You know what else defines us as opposed to the those on the left? Joy. We are happy people because we don’t have to force ourselves to believe in the unbelievable and to defend stupidity. The truths we know are immutable, timeless, and God-given.

I could almost feel sorry for those on the far left, but they’re too nasty to waste any time or emotion on. Besides, they’re too comfortable with their constant rage and wouldn’t know how to make room for the kind of joy we feel so often.

Thanks, penguin and janis.

TNJim Saturday, October 24th at 1:01PM EDT (link)

Love of country and family is what drives us to do what we can, be it donations of cash or time to conservative candidates. If those who showed such passion at the tea parties (still ongoing) and townhalls keep it up and turn that energy into joining their local GOP we can win in 2010 and beyond. The Hoffman surge and McDonnell is proof of that. I’m not counting Christie in NJ out either, for the same reason.

Janis, if you want to see the nastiness of the left on display and see the vaidation of your “constant rage” comment, get a twitter account and see how they troll the #TCOT, #IamtheMob, and other conservative threads.

On second thought, maybe you don’t want to see that…

"even sitting Congresswoman Michele Bachmann" endorsed Hoffman

ColdWarrior Saturday, October 24th at 2:39AM EDT (link)

Gee.

Rep. Tom Price (GA), Mike Pence (IN) and Sen. Jim DeMint (SC) all spoke at the 9-12-09 Tea Party rally in D.C. 99 per cent of those folks, all 2 million, and the millions who watched on C-SPAN, if scratched them deep enough, had conservative values deep inside.

Have Price, Pence and DeMint endorsed Hoffman?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Will they?

All they told the crowd at the 9-12-09 rally was, basically, “keep doing what you’re doing.”

Not. A. Word. about “gee, why don’t you all become Republican Party precinct committeemen? We could really use you! Gee, our party is at half strength, because in the 2008 election cycle only half the PC slots were filled. And the filled slots were split 50-50 between moderates and conservatives. And if you’ll come forward, and it really doesn’t take much effort, you could fill up the 50 per cent of the slots nationwide in the Party that were VACANT in the 2008 election cycle and thereby ensure the BEST, most CONSERVATIVE candidate wins in the 2010 Republican primary elections. Because then we’d half a strong majority of conservatives in the voting ranks of the Paty. And, therefore, you could elect more conservative leadership in the Party, because only PCs get to vote for the leadership. And, PCs can vote to ENDORSE the BEST conservative candidate in the primary elections.”

Why didn’t say this? Why won’t they now?

Because, maybe, just maybe, EVEN THEY might get defeated in a Republican primary by a more conservative challenger. (I will profusely apologize if Rep. Price, Rep. Pence and/or Sen. DeMint have, at this time, already endorsed Mr. Hoffman.)

Want a more conservative Republican Party? Then do something about it. Where it matters. As a voting member of it. As a precinct committeeman.

In a different world, Hoffman would have been sought out by the Republicans on principle alone. Now, if Scozzafava is found corrupt, or so weak she is no hope, will the Establishment Republicans pull their support and throw it to Hoffman, especially if Hoffman promises to caucus with them?

That would go a long way in proving we can change the party, which is what this is all about. If they hold, and Scozzafava stays, the dems will win, and my fears will be found to be right.

The last time the NRCC called me I made it abundantly clear, not a dime more until they openly and aggressively supported conservative candidates and principles. The response to this race is a shot across the bow for the Republican establishment and it is clear that the message is being heard. How the party elites respond is up to them. I only hope there are enough part leaders left with the scruples to understand they need to take the right action and bring the ship about so conservatives can fully climb back aboard and plot the proper heading.

“Republican leadership may be forced to accept Erickson’s message that moderate Republicans will be destroyed and only strongly conservative candidates tolerated. ”

He’s calling Scozzafava a “moderate”, not a liberal. Even her democrat opponent is more conservative than her. Scozzafava isn’t a RINO, she’s a Manchurian candidate foisted upon the party by ACORN. And the local GOP didn’t want to look like they “took orders” from the Conservative party so they accepted her. Petty, personal politics over the good of the nation. GOP=Stupid party, indeed.

It would be one thing...

harlan Saturday, October 24th at 1:07PM EDT (link)

…if Scozzafava was at least a “principled” liberal. Then the RINO RNC might have some small measure of cover.

But alas, she is not. She is both weak-willed and corrupt.

In supporting her, the RNC (both local and national) illustrates that it is as well.

Conservative Base?

wgsampson Saturday, October 24th at 3:15PM EDT (link)

I know what the conservative base used to be, and I proudly considerred myself a part of it. However, having been taken for granted, and ignored for almost two decades, I became an independent conservative. And, the more I read from individuals here and elsewhere, the more I realize I am not alone. So, how can I be a part of the Republican’s “Conservative Base” if I am not a Republican? I will no longer support the lesser of two evils - to do so would still be to support evil. They have to re-earn my support - they have to start walkin’-the-walk. Talk won’t cut it anymore. Armey, Bachmann, Pence, Palin, Tiahrt - they acted - against the party, but for America. I will support them - anyplace - anytime.

Quit your whining

Hooah_Mac Saturday, October 24th at 3:36PM EDT (link)

Seriously, the Republican party is our only means by which to implement conservatism, so get to work making the party conservative, instead of complaining about it.

5^, Hooah Mac.

janis Saturday, October 24th at 3:44PM EDT (link)

We’ve had the last year to stop the whining and get down to brass tacks. We’ve looked at the alternatives and there are none. Either we take back the party and implement the policies that we say we believe in, or all of us are lost.

Standing on your wounded feelings won’t help any of us, and it certainly won’t help you. Move yourself, man, and help us get the job done.

Not my point -

wgsampson Saturday, October 24th at 5:45PM EDT (link)

I just meant that the Republican party has to re-earn the right to call us the base. They way the “leaders” are acting (based on who they are supporting), people should be talking about the Republican’s moderate base - not any conservative base. After all, who do they want to get to come out and vote for Scozzafava - moderates - so that must be their base. I agree, that we just want to revitalize the Republican Party by getting it back to its conservative principles, that is why we are supporting Hoffman - not a Republican. That is why we support other local candidates that are conservatives. That is why we give Sessions, Cornyn, McConnell, Steele, et al. an earful every chance we get. And that is why we applaud Republicans willing to break with their party to do what is right. We hope that party leaders will learn, so that we can stand up and say proudly that we are part of the base - again.

Nope, the GOP in its present incarnation doesn't

janis Saturday, October 24th at 6:06PM EDT (link)

have to re-earn anything. They need to know that we’re coming for them and we will not stop until the last squish goes home to sell cars again. We’ve given them ample opportunity to get the message, but they refuse to think that we’re serious.

If you want to change this, then don’t bother with the earfuls to the ones who are the squishy leaders, become a part of the new wave that will wash them away by activism, not criticism alone.

Not enough

Hooah_Mac Saturday, October 24th at 6:19PM EDT (link)

You need to actively work inside the Republican party. There is all kinds of information elsewhere on this site about how to do that.

"the Conservative Base"

ColdWarrior Monday, October 26th at 11:19AM EDT (link)

Good comments here.

The only “Conservative Base” that really matters to the incumbents is the Conservative Base within the Party itself, in the precinct committeemen ranks. Because THAT “Conservative Base,” if it exists, can elect conservatives to the leadership positions at the local, county, state and national levels. And vote to endorse the conservative candidates in the primary elections. See my comments above.

Our problem, as conservatives, as I see it, is too many of us “took our ball and went home” or never got into the ball game of party politics to begin with. If you want to change the Republican Party, the real way to do it is from the “inside” of the Party as a functioning member of it, a member who can vote for the leadership and vote to endorse primary candidates. Only precinct committeemen (might have a different name in your state) get to do that.
Here’s an overview, for example, in Arizona, where, in 2008, TWO-THIRDS of the PC slots were VACANT and the one third that were filled were split about 50-50 between McCain-moderates and conservatives. Can you say “ineffectual?”
