EDITOR OF REDSTATE

Charlie Crist Gets Desperate. Senator George LeMieux Appears To Be Involved In the Rubio Attack Too.

Charlie Crist is the front runner in the Florida Senate race. He is also the incumbent Governor of Florida. By any reasonable measure, including fundraising, the Florida Senate race should be his for the taking.

Except it is not happening for him. Charlie Crist is becoming so desperate that his campaign has descended to farcical parodies of Nixonian tactics. The campaign has decided to attack itself and blame Marco Rubio. We know this because, when caught, their lame cover up proved they were behind everything.

Let’s review from the very beginning.

Marco Rubio announced he would be running for the United States Senate.

Then Charlie Crist got in.

The Chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, Bob Greer, decides to invoke a little known and rarely used rule of the Florida GOP to deny Rubio ballot access in the primary.

Local parties across Florida revolt. Rubio stays in.

Last quarter, Rubio has pretty crummy fundraising numbers relative to Crist. Crist ignored him.

But then something happened. Rubio kept inching up toward Crist in the polls, closing a 40 point gap to right about 14 points. Then his fundraising efforts kicked in and he raised around a million dollars last quarter. Crist is now panicked.

The lame attacks of a man who has never had to run a seriously contested primary kicked in. How they campaign handled the attacks and cover up of the attacks suggests Crist is running an amateur race.

It all started on October 24, 2009, or 5 days ago.

Someone created an account on YouTube and uploaded a video of that Hitler clip that has been circulated endlessly and turned to parody.

Three days later on October 27, 2009, someone created a website called truthaboutrubio.com. That website went live on the morning of October 28, 2009.

Concurrent to all of this going on, Charlie Crist’s errand boy, Senator George LeMieux, who Crist appointed to the Senate to presumptuously keep his seat warm, began telling Senate colleagues to stay tuned as damaging information was going to start flowing about about Rubio. He advised Senators not to go the way of James Inhoffe and Jim DeMint in endorsing Marco Rubio.

The star feature of the website was the Hitler video, with a poll, a post, and a twitter feed accusing Marco Rubio of being behind the Hitler video.

RedState readers scoured the source code of the website and found Rich Heffley’s name and a path directory to his computer associated with one of the image files on the website.

We and a reporter from the St. Petersburg Times called Heffley and within minutes the site was taken down.

Charlie Crist was asked by a reporter yesterday, October 28, if he’d seen the website. Crist said he read about it on the Sayfie Review, a website operated by my friend Justin Sayfie. Interestingly though, Crist knew details about a site that had not even been online for a full day (created on October 27 and launched the morning of October 28) — details like all the articles used were “in the public domain.” How could he know if he’d just read about the site on another website? And even had he perused it briefly, how did he know all the content was in the public domain — something that wasn’t even true?

Eventually, the website came back online.

Heffley’s name was scrubbed. The Hitler video content was also gone.

RedState pointed out that the Hitler video had also been scrubbed from the site and the site violated the copyright of every major news outlet in Florida by running those news outlets’ full content without permission.

Again the site went down. This time the server was not even accessible.

At some point early this morning, the site came back thanking RedState for all the attention and, this time, all the news articles were abbreviated with links to the full text. The website has not denied any of our findings, nor has Rich Heffley.

To add to Charlie Crist’s problems, we know now that Rich Heffley, his campaign consultant who mysteriously was the one major player in the campaign not mentioned in the Hitler video, and Charlie Crist both pay rent to the Republican Party of Florida, operating both the consultant’s office and the campaign office out of the RPOF’s headquarters in Tallahassee.

There was no disclaimer on the website — a requirement under FEC law. Likewise, depending on the arrangements made in the RPOF headquarters, there could be serious coordination issues regarding both the creation of the Hitler parody and the anti-Rubio website.

Importantly, it is equally damning that Senator George LeMieux, hundreds of miles away in Washington, began, at the same time this started happening, began telling his Senate colleagues that damaging information about Marco Rubio was about to start coming out.

What we know is very clear: Charlie Crist, the man who would be Senator, is getting so desperate that his campaign has resorted to exceedingly amateurish attacks and coverups in an effort to derail the Marco Rubio Express.

We also know something else very clear: Looking at the attacks Crist is leveraging against Rubio, there must not be much there. They are of the half-hearted, limp wristed variety that typically do more to show Rubio’s integrity than hurt him. One example is that Rubio, who is anti-gambling, has taken less than $5,000.00 from gambling interests while he was Speaker of the House of Representatives. Did Rubio then change his position on gambling? Not in the least. Compare that to Crist who, depending on the wind, has a different position each day.

If that’s an attack on Rubio, more please.

…are the details of this hit job known to anyone but RedStaters?…i.e. to Florida voters?

Or will it all remain under wraps until after the election?

I’m sure, when the dust settles, Charlie will be the first to come out and admit it’s an outrage. Then again, perhaps he should just keep his mouth shut,

  • RedBeard

…incompetence. We have a right to expect a dirty tricks enterprise to be run better than this one has been.

The fact that Le Mieux stupidly went around telegraphing the initiative is sophomoric, at best. It’s like a kid bragging about knowing ahead of time that a friend is about to throw a cherry bomb into a toilet at school.

Come on, Charlie! How do you expect us to have confidence in your ability to be a typical self-serving member of Congress, when you can’t even get the basics of mud-slinging done correctly?

  • Richard Mullins

kind of way. I’ve look at it closer and it seems very clear.

  • AceInTX

of course…we can’t afford to luxury of principles can we? Isn’t that what the old guard Viche establishment been telling us?

If Crist had a core of principles and a simple standard of integrity and honesty…none of this would have happened yet.

And what’s so tragic is this…the NRSC is now tarred with the error they made in jumping on the Crist Bandwagon…and no matter how far he sinks…or how incompetent and desperate Crist and his lackeys get…the NRSC will be to arrogant to admit their mistake and withdraw their support

Rubio is a strong candidate, not going to be easy for Crist to lie about his real positions.

Crist is a crick, I will not vote for him under any circumstances.

“The lack of a disclaimer on the site though – that?s a pretty big deal.”

As I think Sean already knows, the FEC’s disclaimer regulations are unconstitutional, and aren’t law. In 1960, in Talley v California, the Supreme Court ruled that disclaimer rules violate the First Amendment. Anyone having trouble with disclaimer issues in a campaign, feel free to contact me, gtbear at gmail, robbin stewart.

But can we really stop our war on Charlie Crist? I’d prefer Rubio, I think he’s the better candidate and the future of the party, but contrary to what anybody around here wants to say, Crist is not the second coming of Lincoln Chafee. At worst, and I mean at worst, he’s the second coming of George Voinovich. He’s very conservative on social issues, pro-life, pro-2nd Amendment, pro-traditional marriage (no, idiotic rumors that he’s gay don’t matter), anti-race preferences, and very strict on crime and punishment issues.

At worst, and I mean at worst, a moderate on fiscal issues, and probably a center-left on environmental issues. Other then supporting the stimulus, which I admit was a boneheaded move that I totally disapprove of, but which also made no difference since he couldn’t vote on it, he’s excellent on fiscal issues. He correctly touts his high marks from CATO, they don’t give those high of marks to just about anybody.

And Crist most certainly has run a competitive primary before. When he ran for Governor, he beat Tom Gallagher (I supported Gallagher) who was also a statewide official and who had a long history in elected office. You’re just flat out wrong to say he’s never run a competitive primary. Gallagher wasn’t liked by the right as much as Rubio, but he was considered the more right-wing candidate.

I’m not saying don’t give money to Rubio. I’m not saying don’t vote for Rubio, but for God’s sake, Crist is still the odds on favorite to win the primary, and he’s hardly the worst thing that’s ever happened to Republicans or conservatives. We don’t need to demonize him. It’s silly and juvenile.

of George Voinovich.” Wow, talk about damning with faint praise. Or, actually, no praise at all. Given Voinovich’s completely ridiculous behavior when George Bush nominated John Bolton for the ambassador to the UN, Crist deserves to lose the election for the Senate on the basis of your recommendation alone.

We need not one more squish in the Senate, we need about 15 less on our side, to be replaced with honest, ethical conservatives who will vote their principles and not sell them out to the first lobbyist who comes knocking. As for your only real negative on Crist, that he’s center-left on the environmental issues, well, have you ever heard of the cap and tax bill and just how devastating it will be for us economically? That’s just what we need, to send one more vote to the Senate for that travesty. No thanks.

  • RedBeard

RedState didn’t start this episode. Neither did I. Neither did Rubio. This episode is entirely created by Crist and Company.

If anyone needs to stop a war, it’s Crist.

  • Hooah_Mac

Fiscally moderate or liberal will sink us fast. The fiscal issues will drive 2010. We need to be able to draw distinctions. The social issues matter, but they will not win elections in 2010. Also, if you put pen to paper you will discover that environmental issues = fiscal issues. Cap and trade is not about fixing AGW (even the greens acknowledge it isn’t happening – that’s why they call it climate crisis or whatever their focus group phrase of the day is) it is about destroying the American economy to make the country and the world safer for marxists.

If Rubio wins the primary, the party can make a case on the fiscal issues. If Crist wins, people will have a hard time swallowing our claim that the Republicans learned from previous spending mistakes. It is that simple.

  • seandparnell

If this site was paid for by the Crist campaign (and I think Erick has put together a fairly plausible argument that it was), then candidate committee’s involvement must be disclosed. Disclaimers by candidate committees are in fact constitutional.

Now, it’s possible that this was a truly “independent” site, but let’s just say having your top campaign consultant’s fingers all over the site does not lend itself to that interpretation.

Oh, and in 1960 there was no FEC. I’d love it if there were still no FEC, but that’s another matter.

  • zbigreddogz

You are either totally and completely ignorant of their records, or stupid.

That’s not an insult, that’s just the facts.

But you can do your own homework.

I’ll give you one hint though: Voinovich’s ACU ratings are DOUBLE what Chafees were. DOUBLE.

For what it’s worth, I totally agree that Voinovich was wrong on Bolton, who I consider not only to be a one of the best foreign policy minds in the world, but a hero.

But you don’t win often if you castigate as being no better then the enemy a guy who’s on your side 70% of the time.

Along with being a moderate, and bolting on important “all hands” votes, filibusters, and filibuster-beaters, he was in the Gang of 14. Bad, bad, bad. He was also another notorious Sunday-morning talk show whore, who went to the leftist media and bashed Bush and conservatives every chance he got.

I don’t equate him in the details with Chafee. But I do pile them both in the same “utterly worthless to the Party and movement” trashbin.

Voinovich is 70 lifetime, but that has dropped dramatically lately:
    2008 – 52
    2007 – 48
    2006 – 56

So he was once pretty conservative, but the last few years his numbers are barely better than Specter’s. Through 2002 his lifetime ACU rating was 81. He’s been softening as time has gone on.

I guess you could say he has “grown” into the perfect NRSC candidate, since their goal seems to be an ACU rating of 50.

  • Jack_Savage

“But you don?t win often if you castigate as being no better then the enemy a guy who?s on your side 70% of the time.”

Let me come up with a quick parable:

Friend: “Geez, Jack – what happened to you?”
Jack: “Got sucker punched at a Redskins game, then beaten nearly to death while I was on the ground.”
F: “Wasn’t Charlie Crist with you?”
J: “Yep – standing right beside me.”
    F: “What did he do?”
    J: “Nothing”
    F: “That bastard.”
J: “No, no – he’s not bad. He’s on my side 70% of the time.”

  • janis

And it’s true: That other 30% of the time is the real killer.

  • http://www.the41stvote.org rcov092

that is John Cornyn’s wishfull thinking. Te Primary will be decided by Republican voters, most of whom will be from what you call the “highly motivetd” base.

So far, in straw polls among the most “highly motivated” Republicans in 12 County GOP straw polls, Rubio has smoked Charlie Crist in every one. If he loses in Pinellas (his home county) I do not know how Crist can justify staying in, 4.3 million dollars notwithstanding.

If the FEC opens and investigation (not likely due to the administrations liking of Crist, he would be done for sure. This is the crassest, most inept, sordid attempt to fight back I have seen in a long, time…from a Republican.

  • simplyright4me

There seems to be not a dimes worth of difference between the RINO’s and the Socialist (Democrats). What would happen if the conservatives did in fact take several seats in the house and senate as independent conservatives. Could they not then replace the precious moderates and then be the apple of the eye of the Republican party? I know what I am trying to say but I am not saying very good. McCain and his antiquated buddies are always pressing for the moderate vote. It seems that the reason why is because their numbers can make the difference between wining and losing. So why can’t the Conservative Party move them out and in escence taking a controlling vote without having a majority. Of course the majority would without question be the most desirable but in the mean time may be this would work. Sorry but maybe someone else can understand what I am saying and make more sense out of it.

New York has crazy ballot access laws, where the party line you’re on has no real connection with what party you’re a member of. As a result, a Republican like Hoffman can run on the Conservative line in New York.

Most states don’t work that way, so in most states that plan can’t and won’t work.

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

They had no primary e lection there, which is why such a horrible candidate became the official Republican.

In regular elections with primaries, that’s not the case, and third party runs become the product of sour grapes whiners.

Nobody wants to be one of those like the Ronulans who backed Bob Barr.

A message to the GOP or the Republican Party. The New York’s 23rd is just the beginning. As a party member every time the NRSC and the NRCC solicit me in the future, I will be sending off a contribution to Miami and Mr. Rubio. Mr. Greer, are you listening?

MILLER CALLS ON GREER TO RESIGN AS FLORIDA GOP CHAIRMAN

Congressman Jeff Miller (R-FL-01) issued the following statement today:

?Jim Greer has shown on numerous occasions that he is incapable of running the Republican party of Florida (RPOF) and refuses to remain neutral in contested primaries. Mr. Greer has failed at managing the financial, political, and public relations aspects of the state party.

The latest scandal involving a RPOF operative and the use of a fake Twitter account to disparage a duly elected county Chairman is just another in a long list of management failures. Further, Greer has shown a bias in the primary of the United States Senate Seat in publically supporting Governor Crist and has repeatedly ignored calls from county party organizations for neutrality. This behavior is inexcusable and Florida Republicans deserve better.

At a time when Republicans across the country are energizing and unifying to defeat the Democrats in 2010, Greer is dividing and deflating Republicans in Florida.

I call on Mr. Greer to resign as Chairman of the RPOF.?
