James Galyean is a candidate running for South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District. Prior to that time, Galyean was an Assistant United States Attorney and also has some pretty direct connections to the War on Terror.
It was Galyean who helped helped write both the Detainee Treatment Act of 2005 and the Military Commissions Act of 2006. As a result, he has a bed of knowledge and massive amounts of contacts that others do not. And his contacts are telling him that, protestations to the contrary from the Pentagon, Barack Obama has every intention of sending GTMO terrorists to the Charleston, SC Naval Weapons Station.
After all, South Carolina did not vote for Obama, so he sees no fall out in sticking terrorists there. But Galyean makes some pretty convincing points that this is a bad idea.
In August 2007, a sharp Berkeley County Sheriff’s Deputy, James Blakely, pulled over two Egyptian men not far from the station. With the guns and explosive materials found in their car, they could have killed any number of people. And the brig isn’t the only possible target at the station. There are others, both programs and personnel.
SPAWAR is a naval project headquartered at the station that provides classified engineering and other support for overseas projects. Because of that mission and others at the station, over 10,000 people pass through the station’s gates each day. Think those cars would be attractive targets during a terrorist’s military trial at the station? With the media hordes camped outside the gates? What about a nearby daycare center used by the station’s families? Think that couldn’t happen? Google “Beslan.”
There’s also a nuclear fuel transshipment facility and a jet fuel storage tank farm inside the fence. You could throw a rock from any of them and hit the brig. Did I mention there’s over 600 million pounds of explosives stored there too? And reportedly a few nuclear weapons. Anyone want to risk an inbound Gulfstream?
Unlike a lot of the kids in the Obama administration, Galyean knows what he is talking about.

As someone who went to school there
itsallverbatim Monday, November 2nd at 10:15AM EST (link)as a young Sailor in 2005, I should point out that the Navy’s nuclear power training school is on the same base as the brig.
As is a DHS/Border Patrol schoolhouse, Army and Navy armories, the Navy mine school, an EOD unit and a Marine Corps reserve center.
Words can’t describe how angry I am right now.

obviously you don't get it
bk Monday, November 2nd at 10:28AM EST (link)Having them at Gitmo makes us less safe because then everyone hates us. Having them on US soil will make us more safe because then everyone will love us.
At least that’s what Obama, Biden, Pelosi, Kerry, etc. say.
Shall We Start a Pool?
farstar99 Monday, November 2nd at 12:07PM EST (link)How many days after arrival on U.S. soil before Obama’s al Qaeda brethren hijack a plane or use NBC blackmail to get them released?
(NBC is Nuclear, Biological or Chemical for the non-military)
There was talk about sending them to Virginia
Scope Monday, November 2nd at 10:21AM EST (link)because of the close proximity to Washington for their trials, and of course I’m sure because Tim Kaine, the current DNC chair would surely have bowed at the altar of Obama and the Liberals. Bob McDonnell spoke out against it early in his campaign. However, the odd year Governors race in Virginia (I’m sure) played heavily on both Obama’s and Kaines mind. They probably did not want to risk the already irritated Virginia citizens (where Obamas polling numbers have gone south) with yet another issue that would have only added to the Democrats defeat. If you think Deeds is polling low now, immagine if the GITMO detainees were coming to Virginia, as ordered by the Liberals, even if it was only a few of them. I’m sorry for the people of South Carolina, and especially that they have choosen such an explosive location (literally and figuratively) but, we are in the backyard of Washington, which can be as high a risk location for those that want to destroy America. Then again, that may also be the reason for rethinking their decision.
Virginia was considered
itsallverbatim Monday, November 2nd at 10:26AM EST (link)at the brig on Norfolk Naval Base (about 2 hours from DC by car, 25 mins by air, 50 mins by helo).
The Navy (which lets the Marine Corps run the brig and the correction center for naughty Sailors and Marines) told the Marine Corps to tell OSD no (Secretary Gates office).
The Secretary knew this would happen and presented other options to the National Security Council and Justice. That was when they settled on Michigan, this brig in South Carolina and Camp Pendleton in Southern California, which is 40 minutes outside of Los Angeles.

Are local citizens at risk?
LDahl752 Monday, November 2nd at 10:33AM EST (link)Not because of escapes. I’m wondering if there is risk that some terrorists will arrive in the closest civilian community, take a dozen or so hostages and demand their buddies held in the brig or prison or wherever be released. With our unreliable ICE people and questionable DHS Secretary, it could happen, couldn’t it? Am I imagining this?

Doesn't bother The O a bit. No sweat.
johnt Monday, November 2nd at 11:37AM EST (link)After all, the base is hundreds of miles from Washington, from the WH, from Mrs Obama and the little Obamas. No big deal. In any case the area is probably filled with people, if you can call them that, who cling to their religion and guns,
If true, and apart from cheap symbolism, what would be the point of the move?
Yes, it would expand the US courts jurisdiction, there would be more trials, more pontificating from the insane and suicidal left, most important it would give O Man literally years to, guess what, Blame Bush.

In a strange way, I would prefer them be brought to a liberal blue state
crosley Monday, November 2nd at 11:42AM EST (link)If these detainees are brought to a liberal blue state where you have liberal judges and legislators and ACLU lawyers, it would really blow up in Obama’s face.
The American people would see what a circus it was to bring these terrorists onto US soil, and suddenly Gitmo would be a very winning issue for Republicans. It would also force Obama’s hand to stop bring foreign terrorists onto US soil to give them “American-style” due process.
'zactly... send Gitmo detainees to Chicago
Hammer2008 Monday, November 2nd at 3:55PM EST (link)Hey they lost the stimulus effect of the 2016 Olympics, at least Obama could deliver on this maneuver!

Stick Them
xiphos Tuesday, November 3rd at 8:35AM EST (link)Stick them in the basement of the White House, guarded by…………… obama supporters.
Terrorists
dclamage Tuesday, November 3rd at 11:54AM EST (link)The Gitmo prisoners have to either be classified as Enemy Combatants or Spies (because they didn’t wear uniforms).
A show trial would either have to charge them as soldiers, which point they’re protected by Geneva Convention; or spies, at which point you can summarily execute them.

Where detained
willowhawk Tuesday, November 3rd at 2:13PM EST (link)After trial where will they be detained? If they are thrown in with the general population of the prison, they will become the leaders and teachers of the inmates, because, most of prison populations are becoming Muslim. Is this the secret idea of this administration? His personal army? Sounds crazy, but , so dose voting for a 2000 page bill no one has read, or pulling our defense system out of Poland or spending more money then we could ever pay back or stealing from those who have earned their wealth and give it to those who have earned nothing.
