BREAKING: Kay Bailey Hutchison Will Not Resign

I am hearing that Senator Hutchison has decided not to resign from the United States Senate to pursue her bid for Governor of Texas.

A statement is coming shortly. My understanding is that she will pursue the race for Governor still, but I’m told this is a recognition that she probably can’t make it out of the primary.

I’m told a statement is forthcoming.

By the way, this move keeps Ted Cruz from running for Attorney General and keeps Michael Williams out of the Senate. Sucks for the conservative movement across the board.

Thanks Kay!

COMMENTS

  • Third Street

That said, as much as I’d rather see Michael Williams in this seat than her, I’m kind of relieved she’s staying put, because it greatly reduces the odds of a Senator Bill White.

  • izoneguy

    She is wishy-washy and weak.

She will not be able to hold her Senate seat either…..

Meanwhile – Perry keeps racking up the endorsements.

  • Third Street

    Bring on Williams!

  • http://www.WILLisms.com WILLisms

Step one to not filing at all.

    …for next year’s energy debate.

Ach, well, he can run in 2012, I suppose.

  • ktsub

Bill White (D) mayor of Houston, has a huge and ever expanding war chest for the US Senate race, and it would have been a really bad time (Spring 2010) to expend cash. This may keep White away from a sprint election, when he would have a huge funding advantage.

Sad for Ted Cruz, he is really a future star of the party, hope he runs for another statewide office, but I assume he will defer to the current A.G. (his former boss).

KBH is a conservative and will keep the seat warm until 2012, never had a tough campaign until this primary.

  • JimofAustin

Why does this stop Ted Cruz from funning for Attorney General? Did I miss something?

  • AceInTX

She did it in 2000 and 2004.

Both times she signaled a run for Gov, people ramped up their campaigns to run for Senate, (it was Bonilla in 2004, I did search for office space in San Antonio for one of the candidates who was going to run to fill Henry’s seat) got everyone’s machinery running…and backed off at the last second.

What sucks is, she’s wreaked havoc down ballot every time she’s done this because there are lower level office holders who have spent funds and started running to fill the spots above them!

  • ktsub

Greg Abbott will probably run again for AG, Ted said he would not primary him.

  • ktsub

Saying she is still resigning, just after the primaries. Who knows what she is doing, if she looses, heck she might still around till 2012. Crazy Kay, who knows, when she resigns that is when she will resign, she has said all this before.

Could he take KBH out in 2012? Why do we have to wait until 2012 to get someone like Williams on the National stage? Sorta kidding ’bout the Palin/Williams thingy… the way National politics are these days, you lose once and you’re done.. although 110% of me wants to be Nobama go down in 2012.. or BEFORE (not gonna happen).

I have sent $$ to Micheal Williams from here in PA. I’ve seen videos and I am IMPRESSED. I will continue to send $$ periodically because he may need it in the future.

  • houtxconservative

    1. Hutchison retires and Williams wins the nomination for Senator.

    2. Perry avoids the costly primary and easily wins re-election.

    3. Hutchison does the right thing and uses her money to elect more conservatives to the state house to build on our slim majority (We’ve got to get a strong voter ID bill and redistricting passed.)

  • conservativewsense

    1. Hutchison’s cooler than Williams.

    2. Perry’s creepy, on a personal level, and is one of the more irresponsible governors I’ve seen in recent history with all of his nonsensical… teaparty-esque… “not what you do if you want to govern as a majority” rhetoric (seriously, who talks about succession?)

    3. We need more women in the GOP. Go Sarah. Go Nikki Haley. Go Meg Whitman. Go Carly. Go KBH.

  • conservativewsense

    PS… This site sucks now. I’m a pro-life, pro-gun, low-tax, low-reg, strong national defense conservative.

Yet unlike the masochists in our party, who collectively gather in forums such as RedState and concentrate their passions on mastering the art of complaining rather than solving real problems from a “getting elected” standpoint, I support a transformation within the Republican Party from bomb-throwing jackasses like Perry to more sensible, grown-up voices like KBH.

  • JoeG

    N/T

  • proudgop

The last thing that needs to happen is Republican money in the state going to this race or even NRSC money

  • Menlo

    KBH is a conservative

Maybe compared to Obama, but she still deserves the name “Kay Barely Republican.”

  • pilgrim
  • Leopard1996

Do you really want to be the jackass to take a dump on the floor on this site. You thoroughly misread the people on this site including myself. The problems that some people have with maybe a Kay Bailey Hutchinson, or some others that tend to blow with the DC elite is that when they vote with the Dem and libs and the legislation turns out to be screwed up, it’s bi-partisan, but if by some miracle the the same legislation turns out to be some sort of success, the Dem and libs ain’t saying work one about it being bi-partisan. Hell the Dems pretty much co-opted civil rights despite the fact many Dems (Papa Gore, Clinton’s mentor, and other dems) did everything under the sun to stop it. But the media whores totally dismiss the GOP/Conservative contribution to that.

  • penguin2

and “unlike the masochists in our party, who collectively gather in forums such as RedState.” You asked the perfect question, pil’.

  • chbroussard

You’re right — Kay Barely Republican. I called her office today to see where she stood on anti-Christian judicial nominee David Hamilton. Her office said “she hasn’t taken on state on that particular candidate.” That’s pretty much the answer I expected. She’s wishy washy on everything. A simple NO would have been reassuring and should have been a no-brainer.

  • Repair_Man_Jack

  • chbroussard

Didn’t this country just elect a guy to the presidency because he was so “cool”? How’s that working out for ya?

  • navychick1993

But what is it with all the trolls today?

  • eburke

    1) Based on…..?

    2) So you’re bagging on the teapartiers who have been in the forefront of the movement to stop the health care madness…Perry is “creepy” why?…(liberal’s use emotional rhetoric…conservatives deal in objective facts)…and not only did Perry not talk about “succession” (he merely indicated that he understood why people would start talking about it), I think the word you were actually looking for is “secession” (conservatives also know how to spell)

    3) and while we’re at it…Go Nancy! Go Babs Boxer! Go SciDiFi! Go Hillary! (I mean they’re women too and as long as you’re practicing identity politics, which btw, is yet another liberal trait….)

I’m thinking a better screenname would be ‘conservativew/oanysense’

    Or, more likely ‘liberaltrollwho’snotverygoodatit’

  • Leopard1996

And estimate that my man Conservativewsense is a bonafide douchebag

  • eburke

ummm…not sure how to break this to you Mr. 9 day, 6 hour wonder, but, uh, it would take either 2 minutes and 26 seconds of perusing this site, or an IQ above a french fry at room temperature, to realize that an unending, unrelenting theme of the site that you’ve come to hate after, ummm, 9 days and 6 hours, is to ‘solve’ the problem by remaking the Republican Party by electing conservatives.

Sheesh, if you’re going to moby, at least work at being *somewhat* familiar with the landscape. You’re giving all of your moby/troll libtard compatriots a bad name.

  • eburke
  • chbroussard

Sorry, I hit the post button before I proofread my statement. It should have said “she hasn’t taken a stance on that particular candidate.” My mind doesn’t work as fast as my fingers!!

  • penguin2

I wonder if Neil keeps count….he might have bagged the record.

  • Leopard1996

But again to Quote Aaron Gardner

“The douche is strong in that one”

  • eburke

My mind ain’t what it used to be or I’d be able to remember exactly what precipitated this but someone posted a diary a few weeks ago (I want to say EPU or AceinTx) about some hot-button libtard issue (either something on Bush or FDT or the war) and the mods gakked about 8 or 9 in the space of a couple of hours. Blew up some 2 and 3 year sleeper accounts in the process.

Was kinda of entertaining to watch.

What’s sad is this clown’s not even very good at it. (Well, actually he sucks but who’s quibbling)

  • gunnerbs

    It’s “secession”, you dolt.

  • freetexan

Seriously who talks about secession? More people in Texas than the MSM will ever report..for now.

I’d describe the current level of support at a medium simmer. Pass Cap & Trade and Obamacare and watch the simmer become an exploding pressure cooker.

Texas will not roll over to the Federal Government on those issues. It could get very ugly.

KBH not resigning may be a good thing. I’m hoping she’ll just finish out her term and retire.I would like to see Michael Williams go for the big ticket in 2012. Can you imagine Williams in a debate on ANY topic with Obama? :)

Since you hate RS so much, I’ll just close your account now.

  • DONTREADONME

I am just messing with everyone that clicked on my comment to argue with me. Friday the 13th, hahahaha

  • pilgrim

We might still have an argument. It is not the end of the world IMO if KBH wins the primary in TX. Rick Perry has been governor for 8 years, and that is a reasonable amount of time to be Governor for anybody. Williams can be elected US Senator in 2010, and Ted Cruz can be elected State AG in 2010. It does not sound like the end of the world at all to me.

    New Rasmussen Poll out today
    http://www.rasmussenreports.com/

    Perry 46%
    Hutchinson 35%

57% of Texas votes say Hutchinson should stay Senator while running for Governor

  • DONTREADONME

I would say that KBH should have stuck with the Senate, I am unsure to why she desires the Governors office. Do not get me wrong I would love to see Williams take the Senate seat, I just can not square her ambitions with moving to the Governors mansion over staying within the Senate. In the end, her ambition may result in a strong conservatives in the Senate.

  • aesthete

    I love that quote.

  • Richard Mullins

that’s nice, but his immigration stance of late is going to cause some problems with the Leftest Democratic Party of Texas. The Harris County Democratic Party is a polar opposite of the Harris County Republican Party.

  • Richard Mullins

or course she like to have a sure thing and running against Perry now isn’t a sure thing. I’m sure that KBH would love to have Radnowsky(sp?) to run against here so she can clean up real good.

  • Richard Mullins

and a primary battle with Rick Perry is not a sure thing. She’d do a better job if it was here vs Patti Radle as the Democrat nominee(not very likely since she only likes San Antonio city Council Races).

  • lkdavis

She is afraid to be out so she won’t do the right thing and get out of the way. She knows she will probably lose and be unemployed… which wouldn’t be a bad thing.

  • vamoose

I’m not a fan of one-foot-in-the-boat candidacies. It radiates the lack of character, lack of confidence, and risk averseness of the politician. That’s not what I look for in office holders and there are already enough of them in the senate: McCain and Kerry. If Virginia is the campaign model the GOP is to follow in 2010, then GOP candidates should remember that Bob McDonnell resigned as attorney general 9 months before the election. Things worked out pretty well for him AND THE GOP CANDIDATES FOR DOWN-TICKET OFFICES.

  • ss396

She said that she will not resign her seat until after the March ’10 primaries. In other words, she’s covering all bets – as she is coming to realize that being a Conservative and being a Republican ain’t necessarily the same thing these days. She could very easily be out of a job if she resigns too early.

So we will have a do-nothing Senator for the primary season. Oh well, what else is new?

By the way, Houston (soon to be ex-) mayor Bill White is now contemplating a run for the Senate instead of the Governorship.

  • http://travismonitor.blogspot.com Freedoms Truth

    http://travismonitor.blogspot.com/2009/11/big-un-bombshell-kbh-to-hold-on-senate.html

Those who think this is bad for conservatives have it wrong.

First, we need KBH’s vote in DC right now, we cant afford a single Republican off the bench.

Second, KBH is behind in the primaries. I predicted she wouldn’t resign because I predicted Perry would lead the primary and win. This is KBH’s acknowledging that. If anything, not resigning make’s it easier to vote for Perry, as GOP voters ‘play it safe’ and not let the Dems mess with us (Sharp and White were raising money for US Senate runs).

The Dems have a WEAK WEAK Gov field. Whoever wins on GOP side is a shoo-in in November.

I would add that KBH will leave the senate in 2012 when her term ends. She may then make a run in 2014 or retire.

THIS IS BAD FOR THE TEXAS DEMOCRATS WHO WERE AIMING FOR THE US SENATE RACE. Also a LOT OF GOP MONEY NOW CAN FOCUS ON TEXAS HOUSE RACES instead of getting eaten up by several crazy races at the state-level. With a full plate of GOP incumbents and a GOP wave year, the Dems are toast in Texas in 2010…

If we re-nominated Gov Rick Perry, which is the better conservative choice right now, then TEXAS GOP CAN FOCUS ON TEXAS HOUSE AND SENATE RACES … and defeating lib Dem US Reps Chet Edwards, Lloyd Doggett, Gene Green and Ciro Rodriguez. We have a LOT of opportunities to focus on and one less US Senate seat to defend and to worry about is good for us.

2012 may see another shot by the Dems at the Senate seat… we shall see. They tried in 2002 and it didnt go well.

Bottom line: THIS IS GOOD NEWS FOR THE TEXAS GOP. We avoided a GOP trainwreck of multiple crazy races. The Dems are going to get KO’d in 2010 here.

  • http://travismonitor.blogspot.com Freedoms Truth

See my other post – I called this back before even KBH knew she’d have to go this route.

I think this is good for the GOP – we avoided multiple trainwrecks at once.

  • http://travismonitor.blogspot.com Freedoms Truth

“Saying she is still resigning, just after the primaries”

will KBH resign if she loses primary?

    I dont THINK so!

  • AceInTX

I’m of a mind the Texas GOP needs to invite Kay to Retire…this is the third time she’s done this and screwed good people every time!

and I hope Williams takes her on anyway…he’s already ramped up his campaign…I think she’d be vulnerable because she’s proven her indecisiveness…he could use it a s a cudgel to get her out of the way…and I’d say GOOD RIDDANCE!!

  • Third Street

Now I’m hearing that she’ll resign after the primaries, but if she’s going to quit her office whether or not she gets the Gov nomination then why the hell not just do it now?

And why the hell would she make herself look even more opportunistic and weak by floating this news in the first place, when according to one poll she’s already trailing Perry by ten points?

If she doesn’t resign her seat then there won’t be any election for it next year, which, as you say, leaves all of these people who have ramped up campaigns twisting in the wind.

What a mess this woman has made.

  • AceInTX

I thought she’d announced officially she wasn’t resigning…If I have to read into what she’s saying is…she wants to hold onto her Senate Seat if she doesn’t beat Perry in the Primaries?

I mean…if you’re not committed to running for governor…then don’t run for Pete’s sake. and stop signalling you’re going to do something till you’ve made up your mind to do it…like I said…this is 3 times now she’s made a false start and thrown down ticket candidates through the ringer. I can’t say she was the reason Henry Bonilla lost when he did…but it couldn’t have helped to have his campaign thinking Senate run right up to the last minute…and that’s Kay’s fault…

Like I said…she should be politely asked to retire and spare us any more of this foolishness!

If she doesn?t resign her seat then there won?t be any election for it next year, which, as you say, leaves all of these people who have ramped up campaigns twisting in the wind.

What a mess this woman has made.

I couldn’t have said it better…and I’ll say it again for emphasis…this is the THIRD time she’s pulled this crap….it’s beyond infuriating!

  • JadedByPolitics

There is absolutely NO REASON for him not to do so!

This is about knocking off another liberal Republican with a very nice and exciting Conservative candidate! To hell with what KBH wants this is about US…hehe!

  • Third Street

Like I said above, there is no race if she doesn’t resign. The next regular election for KBH’s seat is in 2012, so that would be Williams’ earliest opportunity if she stays put. And if she runs for re-election in ’12 that gives Williams an even steeper hill to climb, as it ain’t easy to successfully primary an incumbent senator no matter how ridiculous she is.

  • AceInTX

That said…she’s mucked things up for the party one time too many and I hope you’re right that Williams will challenge her anyway. and I don’t think the party should back her either..but I’ll bet they will.

This needs to be done in the back rooms…she needs to be told she’s had her last opportunity to pull this crap and the money just won’t be there for her if she doesn’t step aside and make room for Williams.

Normally I’d be against such dealings…but she’s screwed too many people over the last 9 years or to be entitled to any loyalty….incumbent or not.

As I said above…I don’t know what extent her shenanigans played in defeating Henry Bonilla…his seat is now held by a Democrat, (I’m sure redistricting had a part in it’s loss)…but it couldn’t have helped that the last time Henry ran…his whole campaign was set for a Senate run and he had to switch back to a run for the house when Kay pulled a switch after signaling a run for Gov.

  • AceInTX

    Collins.

She’s not a rock ribbed conservative but she’s not quite a RINO either. Luke Warm is the term I’d use for her.

  • AceInTX

So…if she wins the primary…then Williams get’s a shot…but the takes out a successful conservative governor. if she doesn’t beat Perry in the Primary…she keeps her seat leaving Williams and all of us who have put so much effort into this hanging in the lurch….

As I see it…no matter what happens…the Texas GOP takes it in the rear…and the only one that can benefit is Kay!

  • AceInTX

    I’m mad as hell!

  • Swamp_Yankee

Maine is a +18 Obama state. Complain all you want, but they still vote in accord or slightly to the Right of their constituents. Getting two Senators in a +18 Obama state to vote against ObamaCare is plus.

Texas is a conservative state. KBH’s voting record is in accord or slightly to the Left of her constituents. That is the mark of a true RINO. It takes couraqge to vote conservative and risk your poltiical career in Northeast. Its doesnt in Texas or Utah. KBH and Bennet are pathetic compared to someone like Mitt Romney, who ran a center-right administration is the most liberal state in the country.

Texas should have two conservative giants in the Senate. They should have the Right’s Ted Kennedy. Instead they give us Coryn and KBH.

  • AceInTX

I’m talking about a scale from far left liberal to far right Conservative, ( Your talking about whether they represent their constituency like Snowe and Collins in Maine which the fit…vs Kay Baily in Texas which she clearly doesn’t.

Many of us vote for her consistently because she’s not in our faces when she leaves the reservation on us…but what she’s done in 2000, 2004, and now is destructive and she needs to be called on it!
