Late last week, servers at Britain’s Climate Research Unit, a part of the University of East Anglia, were hacked and over 172 megabytes of data dumped onto the internet for public access.
The data paints an ugly picture of scientists operating as political hacks orchestrating smear campaigns against global warming dissidents, deleting files rather than make their data publicly available, and manufacturing data to prove their case when the actual data does nothing of the sort.
The University of East Anglia has confirmed the authenticity of the documents. With that confirmation, we see global warming for what it is — a scam perpetuated by scientists intent on gaining access to money.
Even the Washington Post has felt the need to cover this story. The Australian Herald Sun was one of the first to cover the story. They note:
The 1079 emails and 72 documents seem indeed evidence of a scandal involving most of the most prominent scientists pushing the man-made warming theory - a scandal that is one of the greatest in modern science. I’ve been adding some of the most astonishing in updates below - emails suggesting conspiracy, collusion in exaggerating warming data, possibly illegal destruction of embarrassing information, organized resistance to disclosure, manipulation of data, private admissions of flaws in their public claims and much more. If it is as it now seems, never again will “peer review” be used to shout down skeptics. This is clearly not the work of some hacker, but of an insider who’s now blown the whistle.
Ed Morrisey, at Hot Air, and others have done significant digging into the emails and documents. The highlights are:
- Prominent environmental scientists organize a boycott of scientific journals if those journals publish scholarly material from global warming dissidents.
- The scientists then orchestrate attacks on the dissidents because of their lack of scholarly material published in scientific journals.
- The scientists block from the UN’s report on global warming evidence that is harmful to the anthropogenic global warming consensus.
- The scientists, when faced with a freedom of information act request for their correspondence and data, delete the correspondence and data lest it be used against them.
- The scientists fabricate data when their data fails to prove the earth is warming. In fact, in more than one case, scientists engaged in lengthy emails on how to insert additional made up data that would in turn cause their claims to stand out as legitimate.
Andrew Bolt of the Australian Herald Sun has sifted through the emails and finds some surprises that, at first, he was not sure were authentic, but have now been confirmed to be authentic. One, from Kevin Trenbeth in Bolder, CO, to a group of fellow global warming scientists, admits “that [they] can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that [they] can’t. The CERES data published in the August BAMS 09 supplement on 2008 shows there should be even more warming: but the data are surely wrong.”
Another, from Professor Phil Jones at the Climate Research Unit, admits he “completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline [in global temperatures].”
This is damning stuff.

Science is the big loser in all of this because “peer review” will never again enjoy the same credibility. The question of ulterior motives will always be present.
Although, Science may once again, hopefully sometime in the not too distant future, be based on fact rather than consensus.

Chemical Sam Monday, November 23rd at 4:16AM EST (link)but one of the contributors was particularly fond of cutting and pasting text right out of the IPCC publications as scientific chapter-and-verse. I actually started reading the latest IPCC agitprop one day, and found the same text, and called him on it. That was about the time that person disappeared.
Peer review was losing its credibility when I was in graduate school. And the weakening system was partly to blame for allowing unsubstantive work, reviewed by colluding peers, to flow unchecked into certain journals which by default became sympathetic to the AGW cause. Those journals that IPCC regularly draws from have completely lost their credibiility with me, and I do not trust the quality of the work nor the intergrity of the editors. The authors’ motives themselves are particularly suspect.
What a friggin’ waste.

This is actually not the first example of this
Next93 Monday, November 23rd at 9:43PM EST (link)If you look into the Nuclear Winter scare of the 80s/90s, you’ll find a similar pattern; a whored-up computer model that “prooved” a pre-determined political agenda, and anyone who came forward to denounce it was painted in the media as a war-mongering lunatic.
The big mistake that the nuclear winter people made was that they didn’t find a tie-in to big money and power. The people who pulled this one apparently learned from that mistake. They bought complicity from the scientific world through a system of federal research grants designed to punish dissidents and reward the faithful, they set the moneyed class up to make a fortune through crony capitalism of cap-and-trade and “green job creation”, and they bought off the political class by giving them the opportunity to create a water empire in which they could reward the politically reliable and punish everyone else on a whim.
It’s my firm hope that once the dust settles from all of this, the world will have learned an important lesson on power, trust, and credibility.

Dear Ray, Mike and Malcolm,
Once Tim’s got a diagram here we’ll send that either later today or
first thing tomorrow.
I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps
to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from
1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline. Mike’s series got the annual
land and marine values while the other two got April-Sept for NH land
N of 20N. The latter two are real for 1999, while the estimate for 1999
for NH combined is +0.44C wrt 61-90. The Global estimate for 1999 with
data through Oct is +0.35C cf. 0.57 for 1998.
Thanks for the comments, Ray.
Cheers

My understanding ...
skorrent1 Monday, November 23rd at 12:27AM EST (link)Of this Jones email is that what he refers to as the “real temps” are the recorded data from the (highly suspicious) land temperature stations (most likely to be corrupted by local heat sources), and that Jones was attempting to modify the longer duration proxy data because they did not show recent warming.
He may have had good intentions if he truly believed in the “real temps”, but his subsequent efforts to hide his machinations and “lose” the original data to avoid review are clearly unscientific, unethical, and indications of fraud.
You and I have a different definition of "good intentions"
Next93 Tuesday, November 24th at 12:22AM EST (link)I learned in freshman lab that making up data to make your results look like you “beleive” it should is Simply. Not. Acceptable.
In the lab, we called it “fudging”, in the real world, it’s called fraud. I don’t see how that can be defined as “good intentions” regardless of what you “beleived”.
Anyone who knowingly abets this kind of manipulation has no right to call himself a scientist.

E Pluribus Unum Sunday, November 22nd at 10:55PM EST (link)I have said, FROM DAY ONE of any discussion regarding the AGW Hoax that I participated in, that
(a) not only could they not demonstrate conclusively that MAN had caused global warming, they had not even established that in fact global warming was occurring.
(b) the first rule of any kind of evidence in any setting is, is the source trustworthy? IPCC, a UN-funded bunch of scientists on various government doles, was miles and miles from passing the objectivity smell test. If a warehouse full of putrid, rotting mackerels passes the smell test, then so does the IPCC.
Every conservative that gave ground without knowing for sure whether the lefties had solid data, that said “well, OK, there’s global warming, but there’s no evidence that it’s man-caused” acted the fool.
That’s right, a bunch of people, including here at RedState, acted the fool.
So here’s the lesson. You DO NOT take the word of lefties for anything. Get the facts yourself. That means you, Doug Hoffman.

skorrent1 Monday, November 23rd at 12:05AM EST (link)Can’t we conservatives even admit that the climate has warmed a bit since the end of the little ice age? Even if we hasten to add that we’re still cooler than the MWP? What’s that about babies and bath water??
If we have good data then ok
Beaglescout Monday, November 23rd at 10:14AM EST (link)Barring good data, then no way on Earth.

'admit'? That's my whole issue
E Pluribus Unum Monday, November 23rd at 6:02PM EST (link)I know you’re mostly kidding around, skorrent1, but that’s the whole thing. Who said? One whose authority do we have any of that data?
Well of course, it’s a fairly safe assumption that the earth is warmer than the last ice age, since there are no standing glaciers in Florida. But I still make them prove it, with some reliable data, from reliable sources not named “United Nations”.

I have been a staunch opponent of AGW or "Climate Change"...
Chemical Sam Monday, November 23rd at 4:02AM EST (link)…since the time I watched Al Gore go on the Charlie Rose show and claim with a wave of his hand that the science was settled, that we are the source of the problem, and that we were all doomed unless we reshaped the world in his image.
I’ll admit, it’s been shocking to me how many people believe AGW proponents and third-hand propaganda over a Ph.D chemist with counterargument after counterargument at the ready. That and ten years of earth-cooling data, record snow and ice, and people still think that Al Gore is right, simply because he claims he is. Many my contemporaries were caught up in the madness.
Now I don’t my trust and respect are greatly diminished.

"technology guilt"
E Pluribus Unum Monday, November 23rd at 6:06PM EST (link)I think alot of the reason that good, smart, reasonable people have fallen for this is some misplaced “technology guilt”. We have fixated in our minds huge smokestacks belching out cubic miles of smoke and tar, littering the cityscape, and causing acid rain that kills all the living things in Lake Erie.
So we are apt to beat ourselves up over things that are not true. Scientists come along with “data” saying that we’re dangerously heating up the planet, and people just go along with it, don’t even put up a fight or raise the smallest skeptical eyebrow.

I have a small incident o narrate
antisocial Monday, November 23rd at 10:20AM EST (link)In October some green colleagues organized a environment discussion. They were stunned by my laughter. I pointed out that I don’t believe their theory at all. Their theory does not hold up, because I don’t see average temperatures rising. So either the theory is completely wrong or the data is completely wrong. Until somebody can prove AGW to me I don’t believe the garbage.
And yes there is no thing as scientific consensus. It is all about scientific fact. And I don’t believe in BAD science (read fudging).
It was fun trashing the hybrid technology, CFL and other nonsense.

Next93 Tuesday, November 24th at 12:35AM EST (link)AGW is actually good science IF you ignore the troubling issues that the data doesn’t match the claims, that they’ve never made a prediction based on thier models that matched reality (even when they try to project backwards), that the pattern of atmospheric warming doesn’t match the model they theorize, that the model doesn’t explain why other planets are also warming, why there’s a better correlation between sunspot activity and temperature than there is between CO2 and temperature, or how a natural system with an inherent positive feedback mechanism could have lasted for millions of years without some perterbation causing a runaway.
Disregard that, and it’s a lovely theory - except that after a decade and billions in research grants, they have tons of “evidence” but STILL have no actual proof.

It's very easy to see which Journals are guilty...
Chemical Sam Monday, November 23rd at 3:36AM EST (link)of the perversion of the peer-review process.
Just examine the citiations at the end of any IPCC publication. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences is a favorite. What a joke. They publish presentations, basically often by virtue of the fact that they were presented somewhere. There’s an often-cited Geoscience and Climate journal in there, too. Four or five big ones.
Over and over again, the same people publish in the same journals. It happens a lot, but it’s usually among competitors in a tight field, in which the choice of true peers are limited. Usually there’s some payback going on between rivals which prevent publication. In this case, peers are colluding, and only positively reviewing articles that agree with their doctrine. This has never happened so egregiously in the past, except perhaps in an agitprop manifesto in some communist bloc country somewhere.
The peers that are given the articles to review are never revealed. It’s supposed to be random and anonymous, and when it isn’t, you have a hijacked journal.
Never have I seen Physical Review, or some other journal which requires concrete mathematical development, been cited. Not once. It’s a glaring admission of a lack of evidence of any actual thermodynamic, physical or chemical rigor. Statisical analysis and arbitrary modelling is all they have, and when it’s done poorly, or willfully fabricated, it’s worse than useless. Too bad these frauds never released their algorithms, they might have been caught earlier.
This little episode has done severe damage to the scientific community and the trust it must engender in the public eye. It may be a generation before that trust is regained.

Now the people who yell the loudest, or achieve the greatest (government) funding, win. Up until the point where the math and the science no longer work, that is. Utterly meaningless, and chilling on the scientific process

Not destroyed Sam, invaded.
The_Gadfly Monday, November 23rd at 8:07AM EST (link)We can take it back. We can fix what is broken.
And what is broken is the peer review process. I understand the thinking behind it, but it is not scientific. Science is about publishing hypothesis, method, data, and analyzing the results. The objective is to make repeatable the experiment so that others can confirm its results. Although a proper peer review process can make a good first filter for a publication to weed out whacky submissions, it cannot substitute for enabling repeatability.

On repeatability...
mschmitt Monday, November 23rd at 8:17AM EST (link)… this is an excellent point, because AGW data has always been repeatable, because they all made the same… (known fraudulent) corrections. Eg., adding series data is exactly what got NASA busted a few years ago:
http://waterbuffalopress.wordpress.com/2007/08/13/warming-data-skewed-by-y2k/
… they’ve been doing this for years, either by collusion or by destroying their own data to “make it right.”

Agreed. I just don't like the fact that as a professional chemist I have to fight to wrest Science back.
Chemical Sam Monday, November 23rd at 2:48PM EST (link)I also agree with mschmitt, because repeatability to these people means producing the meme, chanting the mantra, broadcasting the conventional wisdom, and “getting ahead of the issue”.
Naturally it’s experimental repeatability and self-consistent treatment of data that I’m after, and I have never seen it from these clowns.
My way out of a recession or depression: Start a new company and start making some serious money! The lab is now ready! — http://www.criterionchemical.com
I understand Sam.
The_Gadfly Tuesday, November 24th at 12:20AM EST (link)I use to work as a DTP guy for a science journal that was respected within it’s niche. While not directly involved in the peer review process, it looked like crap to me. Authors suggested reviewers who were most often selected to do the peer review. But the saving grace was that all the stuff I listed above was always included in the article. And that meant the conclusions could (and probably would) be checked by a moderately competent chemist or biologist.
I don’t want to say much more than that. I think I’ve been vague enough that they can’t be identified, and the methods are good. I’m more certain of that because they were used to confirm things for sales, and if either party were regularly getting screwed for bad methods, it would be worth making a stink about it.

climate skeptics, as you call them, don't have any claims that require substantiation
Chemical Sam Monday, November 23rd at 3:14PM EST (link)AGW proponents, on the other hand, not only claimed, well in advance of any actual causal link, that not only was the Earth warming, it was the doing of Mankind.
Skeptics in this case would like to see the math that you all used to arrive at this conclusion. We’ll take the time to look for a counter, if necessary, when you cough up the goods.
I, too, am a scientist, and would like something that has some slightly better mathematical rigor than a collection of temperature data spanning all of100 years if that, the last 30 of which is satellite data.
I’d like to see a model that reflects some sort of natural reality. Instead of carbon dioxide as an independant variable and temperature as a function of CO2 concentration, as the models are invariably written (incorrectly), I’d like to see carbon dioxide in an equilibrated rate equation, as a function of plant and animal concentrations, variable sunlight, variable cloud cover, and yes, even human contributions. Then it would be correctly written, and could therefore be plausibly evaluated.
Such a model is relflective of a very complex system. Unless all the contributing factors are taken in their true proportion, and the answers create the historical data (aka the data with which we COMPARE, not GENERATE, models, we’ll never have a chance to find a predictive model that won’t have to be scrapped every time the Earth does something Gore and Hansen didn’t predict, like cool down.

The fact that these people threatened to boycott scientific journals who published articles by skeptics and then criticized the skeptics for not publishing and you aren’t concerned about the damage that does to science in general and climatology, to the extent it is a science, in particular speaks volumes for your own ethics.
Congratulations. I’m sure you fit in fine with these guys.

Temperature and CO2 levels are dependant variable based on many other independant variables.
Chemical Sam Monday, November 23rd at 3:27PM EST (link)The AGW has been falsely correlating the two for decades.
The ordinate (the dependant variable) must be a unique function of the abscissa (the independant variables).
You can’t write an equation based on a correlation, the constant of which is the “forcing constant” for CO2. It’s simply not correct.
CO2 already has three constants, called molar absorptivity constants, for each of the three narrow manifolds of infrared light that it absorbs. They are constant over a wide range of temperature, and no amount of data manipulation can change that.
Why aren’t the correct constants ever evoked in any of the models, instead of forcing constants?
Could it be that any of these people have never actually obtained an IR spectrum of CO2.
I have. I’ll bet you haven’t.
This difference in experience is enough for me to dimiss the concept of forcing constants and all work that flows from it without any consideration whatsoever, never mind all the other little manipulations that have plagued this field from the onset.
Why do you adhere to these lies? Because enough people paid by Al Gore claim it’s true?

Carbon dioxide does, in fact absorb light in three narrow bands in the infrared.
Chemical Sam Wednesday, November 25th at 11:02AM EST (link)BUT…water, which is far more prevalent in the atmosphere asborbs infrared light as well, and so does ozone, and methane, and the oxides of nitrogen. The common thread, and forgive the technical part here, is that any atmospheric molecule that has a vibrational state that engenders a change in dipole moment can directly absorb infrared light fromt he sun.
Of course, all that visible light, which is far more energetic, passes right through unclouded sky and warms the ground directly, espeically trees and oceans, but never mind all that energy, nothing to see there, move along..,
Oxygen, nitrogen, and argon, do NOT directly absorb a photon in the infrared spectrum…ideally. For those of us who studied spectroscopy we know that, they can, and do, constantly collide with all the absorbers in the atmosphere, trading rotational energy, and on occasion, collide hard enough to deliver enough energy to cause greenhouse gasses to RE-EMIT infrared light. The whole atmosphere is in fast equilibrium on the molecular level. On a macroscopic level, one gets pressure differentials, and phase changes like clouds, but those are in constant flux as well, based on how The main crime of climate scientists is that they neglect all these processes in the atmosphere (and terrestrially) that occur, that don’t suit their political ends. Hence their models suck, and eventually cannot perform any predictive role.
To answer the causal part your question, you might have to look at it the other way where the rise of CO2 is the effect, rather than the cause. The rise of carbon dioxide can signal a decline — a completely reversible or even periodic decline, mind you — in the ratio of plants to animals in the biosphere. That may be a natural or articifically induced condition.
In fact, naturally, this happens yearly without fail since the beginning of Keeling data acquisition. The famous Keeling curve, neglectfully smoothed over with an average line by climate change frauds to accentuate the general upward trend, shows the effect I’m describing when taken in its unadulterated form. Every spring, the plants of the Northern Hemisphere wake up, bud and produce leaves, and take the CO2 levels down 6 or 7 ppm, in the span of three months. That dive includes the deciduous plant life that begins its autumnal slumber in the Southern Hemisphere. The whole annual process is buffered by a largly constant oceanic contribution to atmospheric CO2.
Now, the general upward trend may be real, but it may not necessarily be cause by Mankind. Of course, the uncertainty about the cause has provided the AGW proponent with a fearful cudgel, allowing a false correlation with CO2 and global temperature rise to stand without a positive refutation.
Taken to an extreme an ice age, or a meltdown might occur (Ice Ages have for sure, meltdowns never have, of course). A good model, written to account for the physical processes that naturally occur might shed some light on the underlying cause. But the current protocols never will.
Remember: Bad statistics and mathematics produce worse-than-useless answers. Bad statistics and mathematics run on a supercomputer arrive at the same, exact worse-than-useless answers at breakneck speed. Good for an Academy Award, but not for much else.

All life on planet depends on CO2
izoneguy Wednesday, November 25th at 11:08AM EST (link)http://www.canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/10987
At what point does misrepresentation of facts become lies? A general definition of the word lie is “an intentionally false statement”, but this applies to a single statement and the key word is “intentional”. A single misunderstanding or a misstatement can occur, but what if there are a series of misstatements from an individual or group? What happens when many statements are proved incorrect, but they continue to repeat them or fail to acknowledge they were false?
There is a long and growing list of statements by promoters of human CO2 induced global warming that have proven incorrect. Yet they continue to push their claim by ignoring the evidence and diverting attention with new specious and spurious claims. Most politicians and mainstream media continue to believe because they don’t understand or don’t want to understand for political reasons. However, even they must understand when the predictions are consistently wrong. Science is simply defined as the ability to predict, so the failure invalidates the science even if you don’t understand the science. People who persist only have a blind belief and as the adage says, there are none so blind as those who will not see.
What a terrifying basis for devastating and totally unnecessary energy and economic policies.
