EDITOR OF REDSTATE

. . . — — — . . .

Barack Obama spoke at West Point tonight on the issue of Afghanistan. In 4608 words, he did not once mention the word “victory” and the closest he came to using the word “win” was those three letters appearing in the word “withdrawing.”

True to form, Obama spent most of his speech decrying the Bush administration going into Iraq. He said — a lie — that “Commanders in Afghanistan repeatedly asked for support to deal with the reemergence of the Taliban, but these reinforcements did not arrive.” The historic record shows that George Bush never denied commanders in Afghanistan the support they requested.

The historic record shows that Barack Obama is not even granting McChrystal the General’s preferred troop level. McChrystal wanted 40,000 troops to 80,000 troops. So Bush gave the Generals in Afghanistan everything they wanted, despite Obama saying he did not, and Obama is not giving his General what was requested, despite claiming he is.

The historic record also shows that Barack Obama, despite his denials tonight, very clearly dithered on General McChrystal’s request, waiting more than ninety days to make a decision and prolonging action for at least another thirty days — mischaracterizing McChrystal’s request in an effort to save face and, yet again, defend himself from Dick Cheney.

That Obama even had to say “there has never been an option before me that called for troop deployments before 2010, so there has been no delay or denial of resources necessary for the conduct of the war” is proof of just how powerful and resonate Dick Cheney is. How many times now has Dick Cheney gotten the best of Barack Obama? I’ve lost count.

The man who publicly opposed the surge in Iraq is now committing to a surge in Afghanistan, while still attacking the policy in Iraq. The key part of the Iraq strategy that Obama is attacking was the open ended surge in Iraq (nevermind that Obama refuses to use the word “surge”).

Proving yet again that he is a rank amateur, Obama intends to have a surge of 30,000 troops in Afghanistan, but concurrently announce the timeline for their withdrawal. This is akin to announcing to burglars exactly the time at which you intend to depart your house and also announcing you intend to turn off the burglar alarm. Al Qaeda will just wait us out. They’ll only need to wait a year. The men who spent years planning 9/11 are more patient than this President who wants instant gratification in a never ending campaign.

And that is, at the end of the day, what this was — not the speech of a Commander-in-Chief to his troops, but a campaign speech at time of falling poll numbers because of his dithering, trying to blame the other guy.

Only, there is no other guy now. There is only Barack Obama. A man who sees no special role for America in the world and a moral equivalence between good and evil.

Note this curious line from Obama’s speech:

And we must make it clear to every man, woman and child around the world who lives under the dark cloud of tyranny that America will speak out on behalf of their human rights, and tend to the light of freedom, and justice, and opportunity, and respect for the dignity of all peoples. That is who we are. That is the moral source of America’s authority.

Notice he is actually saying we will do nothing. We will talk and we will keep the light on — the policy equivalent of operating a Motel 6. Our President views the nation as he is himself — a smooth talker with no actual action. Barack Obama wants an America that talks a good game, but won’t actually get its hands dirty.

Lastly, Barack Obama said, “We have not always been thanked for these efforts, and we have at times made mistakes.” What mistakes exactly? And why tell our soldiers that, in essence, they have made mistakes?

In the years after 9/11, George Bush made sure no terrorist attacks have occurred on American soil. The naive fool who replaced him seems to think the preferable policy is to preemptively announce we have no ambition for victory while broadcasting the code for the burglar alarm.

Since taking office, Barack Obama’s casualty count is nearly DOUBLE that of George Bush’s worst year as Commander in Chief. God help our troops. It’s amateur hour still at the White House.

Winning for our Dictator In Training Pants will be the complete collapse of The USA’s economic and social structure……. Victory is when he signs that lil’ bitty Executive Order that suspends The Constitution and Bill Of Rights.

  • throwback59

say was “Terrorist.” “Al Qaeda extremist” were arrested in the US, etc. He went out of his way to avoid using the “T” word.
“Extremist” is a much softer word, heck, I’ve been called an extremist for simply being a Conservative.
You can’t win a war against terrorist if you can’t even use the word terrorist.

  • momo

but a terrorist attack in the first 10 months under Obama. He opens his mouth and all I hear is blah blah blah!!!

  • ericstenner
  • Tbone

more troopps to help those already there to pack up their stuff to come home. It is also very kind of him to give the Taliban 18 months of leave. I am sure that they will use this sabbatical for self enlightenment. However, unless they all become Lutherans during that time, I am afraid that come July 2011 they will revert to their old ways.

Which one of the following does not belong in this group?

    A. Saddam B. Omar C. Osama D. Obama.

The answer is D. Obama. He has no leadership skills.

  • DONTREADONME

D is definitely the case. It just took this dumbs617 90+ days to go 75% of the Generals original number. Of course the General asked for more than he would get in the end. Plus this guy has absolutely know leadership skills what-so-ever I could have come up with this plan in 25 minutes, wow he took 90+ days I guess that makes my IQ 250,000 according to the MSM gauging of intelligence.

  • http://www.voterubio2010.com nelsa

I looked at the transcipt from the LA Times and found the word terror or terrorism about 5 times in the transcript.

I must have fallen asleep when he said it. I will have to sacrifice and view the tape.

  • redneck_hippie

I listened to the first few sentences and heard “successful conclusion” where the other words were supposed to be. Successful conclusion is completely relative and depends on who is determining the meaning. The bad guys will hear “conclusion” and dance in the streets.

    What an indecisive, pandering jerk.

Kudos to double EE for the writeup. This, next to Toby’s graphic sums it up.

I really mean it since doing everything he can to win it is not there. I’m starting to think many that we should get out since we aren’t committed anymore to win. It’s getting all too plain now.

  • bobmontgomery

The scholar Obama apparently doesn’t realize there was a World War One American foreign policy began with FDR..Obama believes the nation of America needs “building’, not Afghanistan.Although saying there has been no delay, by the time the 30,000 get positioned in-country, 6 months will have passed.Obama lied when he said generals repeatedly asked for reinforcements and Bush didn’t give any.
Obama used the first person “I” too many times to count; at one point he used it ten times in less than a minute.
….This fellow is what is popularly known as a ‘piece of work’.

You either play to win or you get out, anything else is disastrous. But what do you expect from Democrats? That’s just how they roll.

    Altogether now:
One two three, what are we fighting for?
Dont ask me I don’t give a damn
    Next stop is Afghanistan…

Another knock-em, sock-em, pull-no-punches piece, and this man clearly deserves it. He’s a disgrace, and played into Cheney’s court.

Hopefully, we will hear from Mr. Cheney soon. God watch over our Troops.

during the Bush Presidency period. Yes the few skirmishes here and there, but prior to 0bama’s inaugural Afghanistan was won. The trouble really started in Afghanistan about 4-10 months ago, could be a coincidence that 0bama took office, but I doubt it. This president has military morale at about 15-30% levels of the Bush’s levels. Then again that is a % less than voted for him, then again I just compared apples and oranges..

    Wasn?t Wall Street closed for a week following 9/11? Didn?t 9/11 send the markets into a free-fall?

What Obama broadcast to our enemies:

?Over the past several years, we have lost that balance, and failed to appreciate the connection between our national security and OUR ECONOMY. In the wake of an ECONOMIC CRISIS, too many of our friends and neighbors are out of work and struggle to pay the bills, and too many Americans are worried about the future facing our children. Meanwhile, competition within the GLOBAL ECONOMY has grown more fierce. So we simply cannot afford to ignore THE PRICE of these wars??

?But as we end the war in Iraq and transition to Afghan responsibility, we must REBUILD OUR STRENGTH here at home. Our PROSPERITY provides a foundation for our POWER. It PAYS for our military. It UNDERWRITES our diplomacy… That is why our troop commitment in Afghanistan CANNOT BE OPEN-ENDED…?

?Al Qaeda?s base of operations was in Afghanistan, where they were harbored by the Taliban ? a ruthless, repressive and radical movement that seized control of that country after it was ravaged by years of Soviet occupation and civil war, and after THE ATTENTION OF AMERICA AND OUR FRIENDS HAD TURNED ELSEWHERE?.?

??We have at times made MISTAKES??

?? As a country, we are not as young ? and perhaps NOT AS INNOCENT.?

i.e. We’re weak, we lack the will to continue, and we?re guilty as charged.

What a motivational speech for our military and those young men and women sitting before him.

    Typical Obama.

  • http://www.erickerickson.org Erick Erickson

    Much appreciated.

  • skorrent1

Was “Islamism”. I heard him claim that he made the Muslim world swoon with his presence, but I heard not one mention of the ideology that motivates the threat to our existence. “Violence” is not a motivation, it is a tactic.

His insistent focus on AQ is perhaps an indication that he still does not comprehend the extent of this asymmetrical conflict. He talked of the Iraq War (bad) as distinct from the Afghan War (good). Does he not understand, or just not admit, that the first six years of low violence in Afghanistan was because of the enemy’s attempt to defeat us in Iraq? As we brought the level of violence in Iraq down from near civil war to mere gang violence, the enemy shifted their attention to our flank (and rear?).

War is a two-sided game, you know.

  • DONTREADONME

0bama is a dunce, who taught him economics, Keynes? Good luck getting the cost of our wars any where near 0bamas tripling the budget deficit value in less that a year.

I guess that whole GDP number he likes to trump up will go way down when he cuts off Government spending on weapons and expendables, of course he will replace it with welfare programs.

  • Richard Mullins

In fact I think he flunked it, otherwise all this spending for not wouldn’t happen. Well at least last year’s Zombie effect is wearing off.

What else does he do besides talk and light a candle?

This was simply a closer for his line about ‘ordering the end of torture’ or some such nonsense. Your ‘human rights’ will be safe as long as The O-I-Won can draw a breath to start another speech.

  • redneck_hippie

called WLSam this morning. She said the talk around the Point was that Obama picked McChrystal specifically because of his special forces chops. Her son was saying Obama expected a small special forces commitment to do the job in Afghanistan. Instead, the 40,000 troop request was made because the war required boots on the ground as was true and when McChrystal put the request which was against Obama’s wishes, Obama was livid. I had thought most of the anger of Obama had been due to McChrystal going public. What the West Pointer’s mom said does make sense, though, as far as the reason Obama would have hand-picked him, to limit the number of forces. Just conjecture, of course.

bless their hearts, but, many bought into The Obama Dream in 2008.

Enlisted soldiers and Marines seem less concerned with the C-in-C’s political views and strategy. Grunts (the ones in my son’s unit, anyway) could not give a rodent’s derriere about politics. Many of them refused to send their absentee ballots back home. They are all about getting the job done and leaving policy decisions to others. That’s the reality.

Semper fi and an Army hoo-ah.

  • http://guyaverage.blogspot.com guyaverage

Our military is in the face of danger, and the rest of us are in danger as well. This speech did more to raise the morale of the enemy than anything else.

  • http://guyaverage.blogspot.com guyaverage

I would have to say that the Grunts who refused to send their absentee ballots back home bought in as well, even if they didn’t mean to.

Elections have consequences, especially for those who put their lives on the line to protect all of us.

Thanks to your son for his service to our country. Thank you for your sacrifice and courage as well.

  • sharonmcp

Did you notice he said we’d begin pulling out of Afghanistan in July, 2011, with the qualifier, “taking into account conditions on the ground”?

When July 2011 comes around and Afghanistan’s not stable enough to leave, though I pray it will be, he can then proclaim to his whining liberal base that he never said we’d “definitely” pull out in July 2011.

Just another Obamaism for the Wiggler-in-Chief to give himself some some wiggle room and not be pinned-down to a definitive action.

Scope: I didn’t watch the speech, but you might take a look at this.

  • bk

    He was almost completely silent.

  • Scope

Thanks mschmitt for linking that article. I guess it can explain why Obama took so long in making his decision on Afghanistan. He has been listening to far too many people, all with conflicting ideas. I have a major problem with civilians now having a say in fighting wars, or rather, as they call them, overseas contingency operations. I have a major problem with setting up still another agency, appointed by Obama presumably, and taking every responsibility away from the Department of Defense and the Pentagon. I was under the impression that the Pentagon was responsible for any Wars we were involved in. If they are inefficient or ineffective, get new leadership to run it as it should be. They obviously would not be elected Congressman or Senators, and, will actually skirt around anything the House or Senate tries to pass as legit legislation. This means that even if we can overtake the Congress in 2010, they will already be rendered powerless. This is getting more and more freightening as the days go by. Every single day there is something else I discover is taking place that most don’t even have a clue about.

I switched over from Scrubs on Comedy Central during a commercial to see if ABC was playing Charlie Brown yet (of course they weren’t because 0zero was still droning on) and the producer cut to a shot of the cadets. There was a blonde female cadet sitting there and you could tell her eyes were getting really heavy. When she finally shut them, the camera quickly cut away. Frankly, I wouldn’t blame any of those cadets for taking a snooze. They take, on average, about 21 credit hours per semester, and need to fit in all that classwork with 0430 PT, drill, and all the other military stuff. Sleep when you can is something any good soldier learns early in his/her career.

There body and facial language speeks volumes.(TRUTH) obama on the other hand, well his lips are moving, you know the rest.

You NEVER announce a timeline. Even if you have set one, you NEVER let the enemy know what it is. This is one of the essential rules in fighting a war or a battle to victory. If any of you still held a belief that this ‘rank amateur’ could rise to the role of Commander-In-Chief, I hope it’s finally gone now. This was a purely, one hundred percent, weaselly political decision that will only end in failure. The soldiers charged with leading and fighting over there have had their hands tied buy this setting of a timeline. War is an ever-changing set of circumstances that requires constant adaptation by those who are waging it. Our Fearless Leader has no clue how to lead a war effort because (1) he has never studied the history of warfare [he knows political 'warfare' which is quite a different thing] and (2) by his past speeches and writings he has shown that he does not even believe we are in a war in the first place [hence his belief that terrorists should be prosecuted like regular criminals].

Let us not forget that Barack Hussein Obama is someone who has spent all of his life viewing the world through a funhouse mirror?everything is distorted, nothing appears as it actually exists. He, literally, has no clue of how wars are fought and won, and. most importantly, the intelligence to realize when a war exists. Our Fearless Leader is an ignoramus of the first order [many Leftists are].

Have also tied the hands of our finest, when life and death is a split second decision, our guys and gals have to remember the new rules. Certainly! this has cost ,and will cost, many more of our bravest, trying to follow rules, when the enemy has no rules!! A formula to fail, for sure!.
American’s deserve better than this, we need the rule makers to show our finest how its done, by kicking in a few doors, themselves, following the same rules, they set up.
Its being micromanaged by people, who have no combat experience, same as Nam. Do as Abe Lincoln did fire the people who won’t win and hire someone who will. A modern day Grant,or Patton.

and realize that Obama is a Muslim and Muslims hate America, and Obama hates America. That is why he does and says what he does about us. He goes overseas and apologizes for us, he gives rights to illegals and terrorist, he does everything he can against our country while he pretends to care…that is to fool us to think he is actually a president who wants to better America when in actuality he is doing everything he can to destroy it. He is the enemy within. If people dont wake up soon and impeach this enemy of our country, he will eventually completely destroy us. He works for us, we put him in the whitehouse and we can take him out of it…so everyone wake up and insist on impeachment, march on Washington and let them hear our choice and remove this hitler wanna be from our White House.
