Jim “Wellington” DeMint: Winner

Jim DeMint declared Obamacare to be Barack Obama’s “Waterloo.” It was. And like Napoleon, Obama is defeated (for now at least). Like Wellington, DeMint has been throwing the punches and scoring the points more effectively than many of his colleagues, which has them privately perturbed at the senator’s growing popularity among the GOP base.

Not a week goes by without an anonymous aides from a Republican leader or the NRSC attacking Jim DeMint. But while these anonymous aides’ bosses were quietly helping Scott Brown — only after tea party activists flooded him with money — Jim DeMint was publicly supporting Brown, sending out emails from the Senate Conservatives Fund (“SCF”) encouraging SCF supporters to donate to Brown.

Now DeMint has another scalp from the Obama administration and another huge win. Shortly after the Christmas Day attempted bombing of the Delta flight, the Obama machine began an offensive against DeMint for putting a hold on Erroll Southers, the White House’s nominee to head the TSA.

DeMint had tied up the nomination despite Southers sailing through committee with little opposition. Had DeMint not held up Southers, we would have never known the White House never fully vetted Southers. Further, video came out of Southers claiming “Christian identity” groups like the KKK and pro-lifers were a bigger national security threat than Islamic terrorists. While Media Matters desperately tried to spin this out of the way, Southers was trapped by his own words, including a plea for the U.S. to ditch Israel as an ally.

Today, with the Democrats losing their filibuster proof Senate majority that hasn’t done them any good anyway, Erroll Southers has withdrawn his nomination.

Jim DeMint: Winner.

It was at The Battle of Nations that the tide in Europe at long last turned inexorably against Napoleon, but it was at that first battle that the Prussians turned on him and deserted the Grande Armee.

It was the first great defeat after his withdrawl from Russia that broke him (aside from Wellington’s victories in the Peninsula, that is).

Waterloo would come two years later.

DeMint declared health care Obama’s “waterloo”. Let’s not over think it and instead go with the man’s own comparison.

as Minority Leader, I can’t locate it and I think it would make good reading. Thanks.

Maybe the White House chef can whip up some gravy or some sort of sauce to make the crow that Obama will be soon eating taste a little better.

This is no time to be magnanimous and “senatorial”. Yes, I am talking to you, Graham and McCain. Now is the time to put our boot on their necks, and push downward.

Start calling (loudly) for investigation of a whole bunch of those ‘czars’. Get after Dodd, Rangel, and other known crooks who still hold high positions. Publicly call for them to (at least) surrender their committee chairmanships. Get it into the headlines.

And pretty much plan to no-bill every judicial nominee coming. I assume they’ll all be like Sotomayor and Hamilton, or worse. Just shut it down.

  • tankertodd

When ABBA comes up with a peppy, catchy tune called “Leipzig” we can change it. Until then, it’s “Waterloo.”

And I bet I get that tune in your head for the next 10 minutes…

  • tankertodd

I would never donate to the NRSC but I need to consider the Senate Conservatives Fund. I like them. They fight.

I, too, am looking for the same letter. Alas, it has eluded us up to this point. Someday, someday….

In fact, I’m sure McShame is all over telling Brown how he’s going to show him the ropes and be his patron. And, from what I’ve seen of Brown so far, there’s enough ego there that we might be taking Brown’s name in vain right alongside McShame a few months from now.

  • jenniferjmilleresq

When we contributed time and money to his election here in his home town, we knew he would be one of the very few in Washington totally true to his convictions.

However, his skill, courage and toughness in holding back the Obama tide and pushing forward conservatism in spite of the super majority and in spite of the paralyzed and compromised leadership in his own party is remarkable, even to his strongest supporters. He’s carrying all the water up there right now as far as I can tell.

I remember the Waterloo remark and it was spot on. No one was calling Obama out like that back then. Wonderful news about Southers.

Thanks for getting the word out about what’s going on up there.

I met one of Jim DeMint’s staffers after the 912 rally. He was very nice and thanked us for coming to the rally. He and his staff have shown a lot of support for grassroots efforts. I like that, and the Senate Conservative Fund will be on of the places I contribute (over the NRSC). I get suggestions from Red State on places to contribute. I will continue to do so as long as I am able.

  • E Pluribus Unum

I get that impression too. In this specific case we’ll just have to enjoy the benefits – he’s the 41st Repub against health care deform and Cap-n-Crap, and is making some noise about national security. Otherwise pretty moderate.

I just hope he treats Dems like crap and aligns himself with people not named McCain and Graham. I can live with whatever else.

My my, at Waterloo Napoleon did surrender
Oh yeah, and I have met my destiny in quite a similar way

The history book on the shelf
    Is always repeating itself

    Waterloo
I was defeated, you won the war
    Waterloo
Promise to love you forever more

    Waterloo
Couldn’t escape if I wanted to
    Waterloo
Knowing my fate is to be with you
    Waterloo
    Finally facing my Waterloo

My my, I tried to hold you back but you were stronger
Oh yeah, and now it seems my only chance is giving up the fight

And how could I ever refuse?
I feel like I win when I lose

    Waterloo
I was defeated, you won the war
    Waterloo
Promise you’ll love me forever more

    Waterloo
Couldn’t escape if I wanted to
    Waterloo
Knowing my fate is to be with you
    Waterloo
    Finally facing my Waterloo

So how could I ever refuse?

and sent Brown tons of staffers.

They were just smart enough to do it under the radar because if the race became the national Republican party vs. the national Democratic party, in Massachusetts, Brown was going to get crushed.

  • ReaganConservative3

Should he decide to run in 2012, he would automatically be one of my favorites.

His next win should be as Minority Leader, that is until November 2010, when that might well become Majority leader

Last night showed every state, every district is in play as long as we have the RIGHT candidates and they actually fight to win instead of playing not to lose.

  • thurman

I was all aglow and excited to get online to gloat more about Mass, and then saw this little extra jewel about Southers resigning buried under the headlines.

I guess rather than bury it on a Friday night they decided this would get even less coverage today?

    It’s like Christmas in January.

DeMint is a juggernaut right now, the man can do no wrong.

Senate Majority Leader DeMint sure has a nice ring to it…

I think they see him as a potential majority or minority leader in the future and his potential rivals want to bring him down a peg. I have begun to admire his tactical skills and principled stand he has been taking w/o waiting for the polls to find out which way the wind is blowing.

I’m cautiously optimistic as it is unfair to put pressure on one individual to effect much change in DC. They are few and far between. We’ve sent many well intentioned people to DC to soon see them brainwashed to become part of the machine.

To get real progress we must look at politicians as raw material and the system is the machine that produces a product. Its hard for them to effect much change on their own. Real positive change comes from changes to how the machine works and the processes tweaked to produce a better outcome or product.

  • Section9

    …six months from now.

His problem, of course, is that the D’s are going to dig up Teddy to run against him in 2012. Or someone like him, since Teddy is, well, rather ripe right about now.

So he has to bring home the bacon and bring home the pork for the Bay State in a way that looks as if he’s producing jobs for Mass. He also has to do it in an “Open and Transparent” way.

It doesn’t matter that Democrats do their business in cathouses. What matters is that Republicans aren’t allowed to do it.

The problem, as Art has sagely divined, within 24 hours of Scotty’s victory, is that to win in Massachusetts, Brown has to be a “Maverick”.

On the upside, his speakout to McCain last night was a way to let Romney know that he thanked him for the support, but Scott Brown was not going to be Mitt Romney’s poodle.

    Still, a potential muddle.

    Two words: “Jesus wept”.

  • Aaron Gardner

Who’s to say that DeMint wont be able to cozy up to Brown and keep the mavericks at bay?

  • E Pluribus Unum

The Scott Brown thought is interesting, but I’m going to go with Morrissey on that one.

  • aesthete

and DeMint’s opposition was sound, but must we continue to say that Southers said anything to the effect of, “‘Christian identity’ groups like the KKK and pro-lifers were a bigger national security threat than Islamic terrorists,” or that he issued a “plea for the U.S. to ditch Israel as an ally”? It diminishes our credibility to make such claims when the evidence just isn’t there. At this point, I have to assume that Erick is, in good faith, forwarding a claim from someone that he trusts without having fully verified it.

  • fpete13527

Sen DeMint epitimizes what a conservative senator should be.

What will it take for the GOP to understand that he sets the standard for what we want….NOT THE HUFFINGTON RINOs???

  • Carol Tarasewicz

Sen DeMint should be proud of this, good riddance to Southers.

NRSC and RNC are big losers in the Brown election. I will give to candidates, and maybe Senate Conservatives Fund because of Senator DeMint and his help with Scott Brown.

  • ringthelibertybell

Jim DeMint needs to be elected as the next Republican Leader of the Senate, if Republicans gain 10 more Senate seats after November.

    Jim DeMint all the way.

  • JadedByPolitics

to be the Senator who gives the rebuttal to the Idiots State of the Unions!

  • eburke

he’s golden as far as I’m concerned. As Swamp always reminds us, we ain’t gonna get a Jim Demint elected in MA so as long as he votes w/us on the biggies – judicial nominations, tax cuts, no health care, and if he doesn’t preen before the cameras when he has the need to wander off the reservation, I’m good with him.

Right now, far beyond just winning the MA senate seat, he has scared the sh** out of the Democrats and the ripple effect spreads far beyond just one senate seat and the health care debacle.

So, I think I’ll just bask in this awhile longer.

  • http://bourque77.blogivists.com/ karenmartin

who also backed Brown. I’m rooting for my Senator to become Brown’s mentor.

  • 10ksnooker

One of very few with the stones to tell the truth and get it out there.

Do we need a leadership hosing out?

  • obladioblada

Hopefully Brown’s win scared the same out of the GOP. This was not a Republican win. Brown’s platform resonates with voters, not the party ID.

  • Section9

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Mittens was thanked and McAmnesty was thanked.

    Never a good sign.

  • Aaron Gardner

Nothing you said precludes Brown and DeMint from getting cozy.

Just because Brown thanked them for their support last night doesn’t mean he will be their lapdogs.

If he cuts his throat and goes maverick, so be it, he won’t be getting $300 dollar donations from people like me who did so, in part, because the SCF [read that DeMint] gave their support to him. The man hasn’t even been seated yet and some of you are already planning to primary him. At least let him actually mess up first.

The most important thing is that we lean on him before he goes astray. This is a failure of many “activists” outside of the electoral cycle…they quit paying attention between elections.

  • Aaron Gardner

It’s just not an establishment win. Brown’s platform is, for the most part, the Republican platform, hence that R after his name.

    Just wanted to clarify that.

I just haven’t seen much evidence that the (R) means much beyond promoting the party. (And I do keep up with the issues, sometimes obsessively so. And no, I don’t believe the “party of no” BS.) Hopefully the GOP will work through it’s identity crisis before the midterms. We were ecstatic in ’94, but the new boss turned out to be too much like the old boss.

We’ve contributed to Rubio, Brown and a list of “the person running against Democrat XYZ”, and the check book is still open. I’ll know that our faith is renewed when I cut a check to the party.

  • Praying

My gawd – they’re all terrible! I don’t care what order they are dealt with, as long as they’re promptly removed. Of course, I realize that none of Obama’s “Czars” ever really go away – they just go to some Soros-run think tank to plot the next step in the destruction of America from within, but at least they won’t be directly involved in policy formation from the white house…

  • Praying

“Saving Freedom” I highly recommend it! It’s a pretty quick read, and just full of common sense. Something that has been sorely lacking in Washington of late.

The more I hear of Sen. DeMint, the more impressed I am. How ironic that S.C. can boast two senators on completely opposite sides of the “R”!

  • sapwolf

And if Jim is Wellington, then through her salvo of “death panels”, I think Sarah is cavalry General Buford at Gettysburg.

Buford recognized if he did not take a stand to slow down Heath’s boys west of Gettysburg, the rebs could have got the high ground east of town and it would have Fredericksburg all over again.

Enjoy! Then it is off to storm the ramparts with Rubio and crush Crist.

But Stonewall Jackson’s “Waterloo” which hit the charts in 1959. Did I just date myself?

  • http://www.BTWsociety.org racvt

the establishment GOP was in on helping Brown early on, sending operatives and cash.
I believe I read this in “Politico” (father, forgive me…)
However, the GOP strategy apparently was to NOT let that out, as it would probably be the kiss of death for Mass voters to see Brown’s run as “nationalized” by the GOP. So apparently they dissuaded others from announcing their early involvement.
If this is so, I would like to see it confirmed by RedState. I may have concerns with Mr. Steele, but wish to give credit where… IF…. credit is due.

  • llightsaber

Thanks, Jim, for all the work you’ve been doing on behalf of the American people and the risks you’ve taken to restore Conservative values to mainstream America. I, along with millions of others, recognize the heat you’ve been taking from our own party (which is why I no longer donate to the party, but instead to the individual) and for that “inconvenience” we appreciate you alll the more.

By the way: The next to go is Chuck Schumer. Hopefully the letter to my local newspaper tomorrow will bring out someone from the shadows to run against this contemptible elitist. There will never be a time when he is more vulnerable. If Massachusetts can do it then, by God, so can New Yorkers.

Thanks again, Jim. We know you’re “the real deal.”

  • realskinny

that million dollars a day coming in last week made some impression on Brown. It didn’t come from McCain or the NRSC. If Brown has any sense he’ll know he wasn’t sent to DC to join the go along to get along crowd.

  • mosander

He admitted “I am one of you” to a group of muslims. My guess is he had some idea of a botched effort in the works.

  • http://hillbillypolitics.com Steph C

I just can’t help myself. BHO is not a muslim. He’s not a Christian, either. What he does is use both religions, and any other that might give him an edge, to advance his political aspirations and agenda.

It suits him to pit groups against one another because if we’re fighting each other we’re not noticing what’s going on right “over there.”

    Jim DeMint –
Is Jim the only man in Congress that has any balls? He is the only one to stand up to Obumer. Are all the others afraid to speak their minds and question the actions of our great leader? What did we elect to keep America the strongest nation in the world — apparently some pussy-willows that are hell-bent to see America fall into the cess-pool.
Jim calls a spade-a- spade and makes no bones about it. He sees the person for what he really stands for and is not afraid to speak-up. With out Jim to fight for us, We are in a would of hurt. Jim, you have our many thanks.

  • muffin

We’d be in a world of hurt without him.

  • bs61

I agree – he seems to be the real deal.

I remember him being interviewed during the 912 march, and he said that to him, it looked like the calvary arrived! That he has been fighting spending along with Pence, even during the Bush administration and getting a lot of flak.

Despite attacks over his Waterloo comment, he seems to speak from the heart and definitely loves this country.

The only other guy I’d consider is – that is if he wins this election: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VP2p91dvm6M

I’m tired of the same old polls about Huckabee, Palin, Romney – I want better than that!

  • bs61

Love your quote, I saved it to remind me at the polls.
