You've reminded me of the old defunct 'how to get off a mailing list' mailing list
Finrod (Diary) Saturday, February 13th at 1:22AM EDT (link)Back when the net was a lot smaller than it is now, and mailing lists used much more frequently (early on, all there was was email and Usenet), one sysadmin somewhere got tired of people not knowing how to unsubscribe from a mailing list; these clueless types would annoy everyone on a mailing list asking to be taken off the mailing list, when the right thing to do was send email to the mailinglist-request address.
So he created the ‘how to get off a mailing list’ mailing list. This mailing list’s only purpose was to teach people how to get off mailing lists; every few days a message would be sent to this list telling the people on said list that they were on this list because they’d annoyed someone somewhere by posting to a mailing list asking to be removed rather than to its -request address. The idea was that people that weren’t smart enough to figure out how to get off a mailing list would just annoy each other until they got a Clue and figured out how to get off the list.
Unfortunately, there’s a large intersection between the set of clueless people and the set of people with Clout. It wasn’t long before someone with Clout complained at a high enough level and got the list shut down. The list was restarted many times by many different people, but unfortunately the end was always the same: some clueless person with Clout complained loudly enough and got the list shut down, again.
