EDITOR OF REDSTATE

Landing After Leaping

“I believe in a God, one God, who brings forth bread from heaven and water from rocks and men and women like you and me from the dust of the earth, stitching us together in our mother’s wombs.”

On December 13th, I told you guys my wife and I were making a leap of faith.

I often question my faith. There are some days I wake up and don’t feel very Christian. There are some days I wake up and go the whole day without really even appreciating all that God has done. Prayer becomes rote and routine, a habit done before I can fall asleep, but without much meaning and often times a burden to be overcome before I can sleep. Nothing more — and then the guilt for thinking it so.

But these last three months have made me appreciate both God and you. Your prayers have sustained my family. They have comforted us. Many, many people have emailed me to tell me how much that post meant to them personally.

Because of that more than anything else, I would be remiss if I did not now share with you, as Paul Harvey would say, the rest of the story.

God leads us all on journeys, sometimes where we want to go and others where we do not. For those of you who felt that original post spoke to what you are going through, I hope knowing God is working in my life will be a comfort for your own life with some reassurance He too is working in your life.

See, I’m landing now from that leap of faith. Putting my foot on the solid rock I find myself on a new path — one I never, ever would have expected or even guessed at back in December.

My wife is now a stay at home mom. The worries about making ends meet have been offset by the first pay raise I’ve gotten in years, though for the first two months it was a painful near ulcerating struggle.

RedState is growing by leaps and bounds. The Morning Briefing is one of the most influential emails on the right and our sponsorships are sold out for a year. I thank God for the successes of this site and for each and every one of you.

Changes are now coming both into my life and, relatedly, here at RedState. I feel like today is probably the last normal day I’ll have for a while. No, I’m not going anywhere. It’s odd. People keep telling me I have grown beyond RedState and I should consider moving on. I don’t see it and I don’t think so. RedState and I are joined at the hip. Where RedState goes, so do I go also.

If God in his wisdom sees it otherwise, I suppose he will open a door through which I will walk and he will close it before RedState can go through too, like the final scenes in The Last Battle. But that has not happened and I honestly hope it does not.

But I am landing now from that leap of faith. My feet touch the ground this week and off I’ll sprint, somehow trying to race a race I never expected to run and also endure the race set before us we are supposed to run — trying to balance being a faithful witness glorifying God in some way, though I am not sure how yet with this new path. I thank the Lord for his grace and blessings and I thank each of you for all your prayers and best wishes.

Some changes are coming. All for the better. All thanks to your prayers.

I believe in a God, one God, who brings forth bread from heaven and water from rocks and men and women like you and me from the dust of the earth, stitching us together in our mother’s wombs. He sustains all life. He holds the universe in the palm of His hand. He is the King of all creation and of you and me. He is active and ever present — not abstract or passive. He is not my co-pilot. He is firmly in the driver’s seat. And as the hymn says, “He leadth me, He leadth me, by His own hand He leadth me.”

And He is leading me on a fascinating journey I hope very soon to share with you in greater detail and also, in a way, to take you on that journey too. In the mean time, I covet your prayers for me and my family. I cannot tell you how much I value your friendship and kind words these last few months — the bits and bytes of compassion from kindred souls across this series of tubes are as real as those I encounter daily here in Macon.

Thanks again,

for your witness and honesty. God is real. May He guide you and lead you as you seek to know Him and follow Him. Have you read The Holy Wild by Mark Buchanan? It sounds to me like you are stepping into the Holy Wild as he describes the true walk of faith. I will pray for you and your family.

  • JadedByPolitics

that is the MOST ridiculous thing I have ever heard! Erick Erickson is Redstate! I have to believe those who say that do not haunt these hallowed internets and know the influence that this site has and the way in which a grassroots SOLDIER such as yourself has to have a VOICE in new media!

I am glad that all is well within the Erickson’s life as they should be :)

  • NeoKong

What you have done here at RedState is a miracle. With your leadership and guidance we will put this country back on an even keel again.

  • marshmom

Sometimes that leap of faith is the hardest thing in the world to do because it requires that we go against what we know and give our life over to God, but God requires that we do that so that we can, in the end, give him the glory he deserves.
I am so glad that things are working out positively for you and your family. God has put you exactly where he wants you and he is working through you to reach out to others. May God continue to bless you and your family!

  • penguin2

trepidation, but like you Jaded, just can’t see it any other way – RedState is Erick Erickson and we are with him and RedState. Those that say otherwise, “do not haunt these hallowed internets” as you said, Jaded.

Erick, whatever new steps you are taking, I have no doubt that we will be with you. There are others here that say similar things about how many of us have been led to RedState and we stay because the connection was meant to be. I have faith that while I may not know the reason, I believe that God in His Wisdom does.

God Bless you and your family, Erick. May God also Bless the Contributors/Moderators, members and readers, and aid us in continuing to make RedState the unique community it is.

  • Brian Hibbert

He will always lead you to a way to serve Him, if you let Him.

It’s something that I didn’t learn until I was a bit older than you Erick. My prayers will include a request that whatever leap you made will glorify the Lord.

People get crazy ideas that the front man is bigger than the band. Most of those front men who have big egos go off on their own and fail.

Fortunately Erick you’re smarter than that. :-)

  • ocleverone

Bless you and your family, Erick. You all will always be in my prayers and thank you for not only your daily efforts but your witness as to what the faith in God can bring.

Redstate is one of the key sites I visit multiple times per day (including my own) to try in my own way to quilt together as many people of like minds and hearts as possible.

God bless you and your family…and God bless the U.S.A. as we try to save her.

  • pathfinder81601

Thanks for sharing. Cast all of your cares on HIM, for HE cares for you. Continue to stay in a right relationship with God and don’t worry or fret. Even if you make “mistakes”, even these will turn into stepping stones to get you to your ‘promised land’. I am 63 years old and have taken some giant leaps of faith. Every single time, God has brought me out into a new and spacious place. Abba Father, enlarge the cords of Eric’s tent.

  • conservos

and I believe he has raised great men and women to help us when people are in crisis. (Remember, he said the gates of hell would not prevail against his church?) If you study the founding of our country — those were great men who were born and led, right at the right time, for us.

I believe you are one of these great men, Erick.

Thank you for all you’ve done, esp. your service to this country.

I pray God protect you always and bless your mind and the work of your hands for his greater glory.

Bless you and yor family — how neat about the fruits of mom staying home. Wonderful, isn’t it? :)

When’s your book coming out? ;)

  • partyof1

into a higher level of activism. It should go without saying that you are an outstanding general for the troops.

Really admirable of you all to go the stay-at-home Mom route. No matter what the sacrifices, I’ll always believe that’s the best way.

I’ve heard you on the radio a couple of times, and always wanted to call to suggest you do it full time. You may think the market is saturated with right wing talk show hosts but so many of them are posers — talk show hosts first and conservatives second. And it would totally dovetail with RS. Show prep doubles as morning update – score! And you’d have an instant audience.

It’s not Biblical, but for some reason the following verse had been going through my head as I worked overnight last night, then I read this post. Strange.

    I met an old cowboy.
I saw the look in his eyes
Something tells me he’s been here before ’cause,
    experience makes you wise

    Here’s to wisdom. And Providence.

  • Tbone

    I needed this.

  • fpete13527

Erick, whatever your new stand is I support you and your family completely.

What you have done with RedState has been more impactful than any 100 people or organizations put together. You and RedState have done more to take this country back than anyone or any group……by leaps and bounds!

God bless you and your family and again I am with you 100%.

  • jsmiddleton4

My experience is what feels like a leap now when you look back, you’ll wonder why you even thought of it as a leap.

Here is my best illustration of faith. And I was shown this on a trip as the Holy Spirit said quite clearly in my head, “Hey, look… that’s faith…”

I was driving part of our youth group from east of Modesto into the Bay area to see a baseball game. Was headed across one of the bridges going from Oakland into San Francisco. The part of the bridge on the San Francisco side was covered in fog. I could not see the exit. I could see the entrance clearly. I could see cars coming at me on the other side of the bridge. Could not see any of the footings, pillars, support structures nor any part of the exit of the bridge.

However I did not hesitate a second to drive onto my side of the entrance to the bridge even though I could not see all the way across. It was at that moment the Holy Spirit nudged me and said, “Hey, look…that’s faith.”

John 1:14 “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

I have seen the entrance to the bridge. And what I have seen has also come from the fog, from the unseen, into what can be seen.

I will without hesitation with full abandon enter on my side.

As Paul noted, the greatest spritual gifts given by God are faith, hope, and love. It is clear that He has given you all three in abundance (and, not just those). Moreover, as Jesus taught in His parable of the talents, when He gives gifts, He wants people to use them. Your leap of faith, your hope for the future, and your obvious love for your family, your God, and your country are a lesson to all, and particularly for those of us who are people of faith.

It is clear that you are using your gifts in His service. There will be a cost, of course, because any worker for God will be opposed. There will be some battles lost, and there will be pain in service.

God may have called you to move in the world of politics. That is important, and it is good. But there will be success — successes that you will never even know. It will be through the lndividual lives you touch. Jesus worked through individual tansformation. He did not say “Go out and change the government.” He told us to transform the world one life at a time. The rest will follow. Paul did not call for abolition when he returned Onesimus to Philemon. Instead, he pointed out that the obligations of individual relationships in Christ made it irrelevant by being more important than mere societal norms.

No matter what happens, remember that you have *already* affected many lives, including mine, and *already* there is great good in the world that has spread because of you. Every person’s life you’ve made better, you’ve made better by Christ in your life. Nobody will ever be able to take that away. Already you are a good and faithful servant.

Know that you are in my prayers, and I am in sure in the prayers of thousands as you walk down this path.

    God bless you, Mr. Erickson.

I’ve been at RedState for more than 4 years and seen it grow from a “pass the tin cup” site to a real voice in the conservative movement. I am so glad you share your Faith in God boldly. It is necessary.

I see RS continuing to grow. I tell all my Twitter people to follow RedStae for the straight scoop on the theme park we lovingly call Washington.

Maybe it’s time to write a book about your journey, EE.

  • mwmom

This is a reminder on our journeys that our God is faithful, and the help us keep the faith in all that we do, both spiritual, and political.

I will continue to pray for you and your family, this wonderful RedState community and our country.

  • teresakoch

and speaking from experience, I can tell you that while things may be hard financially at first, you will NEVER regret the decision that you and your wife have made for her to be a full-time mom.

Take it from this child of the late 60′s – someone who lived through the beginnings of the women’s movement – we were always told that a woman could not find true satisfaction simply by staying home with their children. We were told that anyone who did that was wasting their mind and their potential.

I’m here to tell you, nothing could be further from the truth. I have a college education, but I have been a stay-at-home mom for the past 21 years, and I wouldn’t trade that experience for the world. I have never felt like I wasn’t valued for my intellect or my abilities, and my life has been very rich indeed.

Your children will benefit so much from this, as will you and your wife. After that first year, you get used to the difference in pay. Surprisingly, there generally isn’t a huge difference in the salary, because you aren’t paying for child care, extra meals out, extra income and social security taxes, etc. You’ll adapt.

Thank you so much for this post and the one that preceded it. You truly do have a gift, and we all thank you for sharing it with us every day. Good luck, and here’s to continued success!

  • mbecker908

Thank you for your leap of faith, and thanks to your wife too.

  • redneck_hippie

to see you broadening your reach to broadcast as a way to cast your net. I always felt you were doing it purely as a representative of RedState and not as a career-enhancer as most would do.

Thank you for re-iterating your commitment to the rest of us. It means a lot.

  • graceia

Driving into the fog as an act of faith…beautiful.

  • Castor

Erick, as mere mortals we may not understand why sometimes, maybe most of the time. As one who has been led out of the valley of death when the cold war heated up, I felt His presence. I pray that He may guide you to help all of us in our crusade to save our beloved Country.
Please pray today for our friends in Columbia who are going to the polls in this very minute for congressional elections which will determine the next chapter in the fight against Hugo Ch?vez and his commie thugs.

  • daveinalaska

“If God in his wisdom sees it otherwise, I suppose he will open a door through which I will walk ….”

Erick, let me first tell you that your original post that prompted your testimony today, did touch me like many others. However, I take one exception with your comments.

I have read your and other thread leader’s comments about Sarah Palin and how she should not run for President, is not ready, and so on and so forth.

Sarah many times when asked if she will run, has told us if God opens that door she will walk through it.

My question to you is while you are praying for God’s direction for YOUR life, were you also asking Him about Sarah’s “doors?”

Do not misunderstand me, I am certainly NOT trying to knock the wind out of your blessings, I am only asking that could it be possible that God works in Sarah’s life too?

  • http://cwclarkassocs.com Lectric_Chuck

Your words offered up some positive encourage for our church today as I led off with a word or two from your post.

Later, our Pastor taught from f Genesis and the story of Joseph and his brothers. Joseph was steadfast in his behavior and let God’s plan work in his life even from prison.

A humble heart is a welcoming place for God’s Spirit and a starting place for creating a significant life. It is a good thing to bend the knee to the Creator.

Keep up the good work on Red State!

  • jsmiddleton4

That picture has organized a great deal of “issues” in terms of Christianity. Like how folks who want to tear it down attempt to destroy the credibility of the bridge access we can see. The credibility of the Bible is always a first step in attacking our faith. They attack the bridge parts I can see.

Part of the reason I was not hesitant to drive across that bridge is I saw cars coming at me from the fog. The cars coming at me told me the bridge went through the fog on to the other side. It is not surprising then one of the first attacks people lodge against Christianity is to remove Christ’s deity and to destroy the truth He came from the Father to us, the Incarnation and virgin birth always get attacked as well. It destroys the truth of some one came towards me from the fogged in side.

then, other things equal, we would go on. The site would lose something, but others would step in to the vacuum to make up the difference. Perhaps it would even be bigger without him. More likely, of course, is that it would not.

But that’s hardly the point. Redstate is not about a career for Erick or building up Redstate’s readership or influence, except as a means to an end. The end is promoting conservative Republican ideas and influence and putting candidates into office who agree.

The minute we stray from that path to start promoting Erick’s career or Redstate qua Redstate is the minute we start losing it all.

I could go on, but I just want to add my support, prayer, and give voice to my utter respect for the path Erick has chosen and the way he’s chosen to tread it.

  • janis

At a time when so many are reticent to even mention God, you lead the way by making sure that we all know that you look to Him as the true leader. As so many have already said, you and your wife’s decision to put your children first will bring you the gratitude of not only your children, but someday your grandchildren.

Good parenting echoes down through the generations. My assumption is that you had a mighty fine upbringing yourself to be the man you are today. It’s a privilege to be a small part of the work you do. Prayers always, for you and your family, and most surely for this country in peril.

  • Obis_Sister

Thanks for sharing – I’m blessed to call you my friend. If Congress was full of fine men like you, we wouldn’t be in this mess we’re in now.

You and yours will continue to be in my prayers. See you in Austin, if not before!

…working together to educate within the home.
It is truly a blessing to have such freedom to educate (look at the State’s prohibition of such a freedom in Germany and Sweden).
Consider the possibilities. With such great responsibility and sacrifice comes incredible reward – much more than we ever could have imagined going in.
Would be glad to encourage you in this direction…

  • retail1

with this post. Thank you for all you have done to keep me (a simple working tax paying woman in Florida) positive through these rocky political times. Reading Redstate is the first and last thing I do each day. I have learned so much and look forward to learning more.

I wish you sucess, peace and the love you deserve with your work and life.

  • pac_NY

to see the many good brothers and sisters in Christ on this site. I know we all pray that our country will not be forsaken.

I know, too, of the leap you speak of Erick, and it has seemed to me in my own life as I grew in my faith and understanding of God’s Word, that the more I commit my and life and trust to God, the more blessings I receive; believing God’s hand has brought me those blessings has been the only proof I ever needed to know that God is indeed intimately involved in our lives, and that He cares for us. As is written.

The first time I ever read this site, I joined RS as a member right then and there – and the first time I ever joined any site. I have been reading it several times daily since; RS has been a great blessing to me in being able to access such excellent political content by some very astute contributors. I still say it is the best conservative site I’ve ever read.

I think you are very wise, Erick, to recognize that God is working in your life and that you submit to go where He leads. I know He will lead you were you need to be at all times. He has a purpose for each of us regardless of our circumstances and place, and I believe we’re all very grateful that you are with RedState!

I wish you and your family continued blessings from the Lord.

And thank you, Erick, for your post. Your testimony gave me strength at a needed time.

I can do all things through Christ which strenghens me (Philippians 4:13),

and everyone who keeps RedState running and a force for the conservative way.

RedState keeps me going…lets me know how many voices are out there saying the same things I am saying. In addition, there is so much inspiration here….it is a great help to me as I struggle on my particular journey.

Keep it up. We will be there for you on your journey, whereever it may lead.

  • katnandu

I just read your December post, along with this one. I have to say it was meaningful for me. I have been home raising 5 children for 25 years and even though I was steadfast in that decision, I am feeling a little lost in my late 40′s now. I know that sounds selfish. Your words have inspired me in ways I can’t really explain. Thanks…By the way your kids will really benefit from your decision, no question about that!

    Eric,

I’ve been reading RedState for a couple years now, and it’s one of the first blogs I read daily (along with Newsbusters). I love how you are unashamed to be a conservative and a Christian, and I enjoy seeing the impact you’re having.

However, with this series of articles, I have to admit, I’m feeling like it’s Fred Thompson’s campaign all over again, with the announcement about the announcement about the announcement

  • http://www.deadfishwrapper.com wonder95

And yes, I did just misspell Erick. Sorry.

  • penguin2

I’m sure you know it, but sometimes it is nice to know others can really understand what raising and loving a family is all about. You sound like a very unselfish person. One thing you will discover here in the RS community, is that we all have had doubts, concerns and questions about what we are doing, where we have been and where are we going next. Everything happening on the political front affects the personal and home front, as well.

If you stick around here, it won’t be long before you will find new paths to take. Watch out for someone named ColdWarrior, he will get you signed up to be a precinct committee person in a heartbeat. That is, if you are not doing it already. :)

  • shushu1

Thanks for all you do and for Redstate. I wish only the best and brightest of futures for you and your family.

    Redstate is making a difference!

for what you do for God and country! I appreciate very much your candor and I hope it gives other Christians here the encouragement to know that even though we aren’t perfect, we know the One who is, and we can still impact the world around us.

RedState is one of my very favorite websites. Thank you (and all those who post their thoughts and insights) for helping me become better at articulating what I believe (as a Christian and as an American.)

    Bless you!
