Is the Obama Administration Behind An Astroturf Anti-Tea Party Website?

“Cass Sunstein has favored the government using outside parties as government propaganda agents to paint their opposition as fringe and undermine their credibility.”

Astroturf is the act of professional interest groups designing campaigns that appear to be grassroots efforts, but are not. It is what the left has accused the tea parties of being. Only more and more it looks like the anti-tea party movement is truly astroturfing.

Writing on January 15, 2010, Glenn Greenwald at Salon noted Barack Obama’s new head of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, Cass Sunstein, had championed creating fake websites and using outside 501(c)(3) interest groups to act as alleged independent champions of government policy and to “cognitively infiltrate” opposition websites, etc.

In other words, Cass Sunstein has favored the government using outside parties as government propaganda agents to paint their opposition as fringe and undermine their credibility. Kind of like what has been happening with the tea party movement – lots of SEIU members pretending to be tea party activists causing violence in front of TV cameras.

Sunstein advocates that the Government’s stealth infiltration should be accomplished by sending covert agents into “chat rooms, online social networks, or even real-space groups.” He also proposes that the Government make secret payments to so-called “independent” credible voices to bolster the Government’s messaging

Considering Sustein’s recommendations, it is not far removed to speculate the Obama administration is behind a new anti-tea party website called The Other 95, which defends the government from tea party criticisms and attacks the tea party movement as fringe.

The website purports to be authentically grassroots, though one must wonder when the last time was any grassroots activist took the time to defend the government.

The designer is affilated with MoveOn.org and other leftwing sites and causes.

But most notable, the donations page makes donations out to Democracy in Action. Democracy in Action is not for individual activists to use. It is for small and medium sized 501(c)(3) organizations and others on the left. Among its clients? ACORN, True Majority, NAACP, and others.

Hmmmm. . . .

Let’s also remember that Center for American Progress, led by Obama’s transition team director John Podesta, has regular 8 a.m. phone calls to coordinate activity on the left.

It’s a play right out of Lenin’s handbook, forget Alinsky, to call the authentic “inauthentic” and then create something inauthentic demanding it be called “authentic.”

website owner, now being investigated by the school board that employees him as a teacher, is singing about his connections?

  • Superheater

This is why Obama and his minions are in fact, as bad as advertised. They don’t even stop to think about anything other than their agenda.

By what authority do they engage in deception to attempt to marginalize their own citizens? I’m sure they would recoil at the animated caricatures of Japanese and Germans during World War II, even though it was done by a Democrat administration, BUT AGAINST NATIONS AT WAR WITH US.

Seriously, once this guy is out of office, there needs to be investigations of these government “officials” to assess the criminality of their actions.

  • philbo

Maybe Cass Sunstein is modeling a Democratic answer to the Republican propaganda website Townhall.com? Just wondering.

A government that hires people to spread government propaganda to benefit government against its own citizens. I never imagined I would live inside one of Orwell’s vivid imaginary worlds…but here I am.

For a free society to remain free there must be a way to limit the involvement in government and positions of influence of people devoted to the enslavement of the masses to government. These people have spent generations worming their way into all the institutions of power and influence in our society and are now in the process of destroying us from within. I know eternal vigilance is the price of freedom but how are to remain publicly vigilant against these moles without being accused of McCarthyism? For every Van Jones, Cass Sunstein, or Bill Ayers there a thousand other nameless faceless socialists eating out the core of our nation out of sight and out of mind.

  • RedBeard

…what aspect of Townhall.com is being run in secret. Looks pretty straightforward to me.

But then, perhaps I just can’t see the hidden control center run by Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Halliburton, et al.

“Is the Obama Administration Behind An Astroturf Anti-Tea Party Website?”

A parallel question would be, “Is there any reason, given the Obama mob’s agenda, staff, and past performance, to assume they are NOT behind an anti-tea party website?”

If it walks like a duck, etc. etc.

  • earlgrey

Does anyone have any good news today. Seems like Obama is getting more brazen and obvious about his dislike of the American people and the fabric of the country.

I was hoping more would notice and change their minds about him and it seems like we are the only ones noticing or caring. Polls haven’t changed much since HCR was forced on us. I was hoping someone might have something hopeful to share.

  • loupgarou1317

I went there (had to use a gallon of eye bleach after wards) their true colors showed by ONCE AGAIN calling us “Tea Baggers”……I know they will not grow up, but get over it, that makes it TOO EASY to figure out that it is a FAKE!!!

  • http://thesandsinstitute.org Vassar Bushmills

I know private conservative sites that do the same thing…infiltrate, covert, etc…with a different purpose, of course…but no one on the Left has ever smelled them out…and as paranoid as they are, they’re even watching for them.

This is either sheer incompetence or something else.

Isn’t that one of the names being floated for a future slot on SCOTUS (post-Stevens)? Yikes.

I take it as a POSITIVE SIGN all this Obama and WH backed hit back against a genuine We The People movement,. THEY ARE RUNNING SCARED, FOLKS! Let’s rock em on their heels further. Research Dr Mannings Columbia Trial on Obama’s missing years, the info available on Barry Soetero in Indonesia. Post, blog, question, tell your friends. Make as much of a CLAMOR as possible….
Let’s get them to hit back ewven harder. The more they polarize America, the more folks are OPENING THEIR EYES to what is really going on…
Go ahead Dems, paint us as racists, and every black conservative gets THAT MUCH MORE PRESS!

  • disintelligentsia

He’s a good friend to BHO and he would make a scary justice. He’s very much an ends-justify-the-means kind of guy. He’s in favor of government paternalism – that “we the people” just don’t know what’s good for us and we need to do as our betters tell us. He sincerely believes the government should have unbridled power.

  • Justin_Case

    sponsored by elected officials?

  • jsmiddleton4

You do know the left really believes that the reason their ideas are so unpopular is that their ideas are not getting “out there”. People just don’t understand and IF they did, we’d want to be leftist.

So the idea that Obama wants and needs and is behind any leftist web site should surprise no one.

He can not, and the left can not, allow themselves to believe the message is out there and we have rejected it.

Their message is not out there or the right has perverted it will ALWAYS be their m.o.

  • grandma

and that’s why he isn’t sleeping too well.

Do you think he might be able to enlist the services of Daniel Webster to get him out from his contract?

  • renny

They have not noticed that the Crash the Tea Party business was immediately hacked and Jason Levin outed and that they can put up fake sites, but they will only attract fake viewers, like college kids and their looney profs.

Real people from Indiana or Iowa aren’t going to be pulled into supporting krap and trade and card check, et. al., by some idiot website. Movealong and kos and Huff already prob. have all the members they are going to get.

The tea parties and compatriots, on the other hand, are expanding and will continue to do so, because there are more people who have never marched and never gotten angry and never tried to be something of an activist than there are the angry left that is the same people angry at everything all of the time.

They are the ones who actually believe that: tax rates have no effect on business or personal decisions, welfare does not create dependency, you can tax, spend, and borrow your way into prosperity, minimum wages are not a tax on business, a weak greenhouse gas that is a small percentage of our atmosphere is going to doom us, and that appeasement brings peace and security.

They really believe all of that! That is why I will never concede anything to a lefty, they are not really all that bright.

  • http://thesandsinstitute.org Vassar Bushmills

…but who knows.? These are supposed to be the internet version of dark ops. It really is easy to move about unseen. Who the hell tries to set up a rabid, right wing astro-site uaing a known MoveOn designer?

Your’re right, it could be stupidity.

  • lukematthews

. . . that it is our own government declaring war on its people. It appears that controlling and directing the lame-brain media outlets like the New Obama Times, Washington ComPost, and the broadcast networks just isn’t enough to scam the rest of us. Now they are trying to marginalize and fake-out the rest of the media outlets. Have they no shame or integrity? It is becoming abundantly clear that they do not.

  • Scope

and they know we all are not stupid. People are more educated now, politically, than ever before. They have an agenda, and it has nothing to do with we the people. It is foolish to believe otherwise. Everything is being done on purpose. If anyone is stupid, it is Obama and his administration to think that the Americans will lie down and let the Marxist do whatever he pleases. That of course depends on what dirty tricks they have up their sleeves for future elections.

  • jdkchem

about the obama administration? You can report back to boy wonder that simpleminded “wondering” fools nobody but the fools that follow his brand of socialism.

    http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/01/16/krugman/index.html

What will make it impossible to effectively call out wrongdoing by future corrupt administrations (by which Krugman seems to mean: Republican administrations) is the willingness of some people to tolerate and defend corruption when done by “their side.” The next time we have what Krugman calls a “genuinely corruption administration” which, say, secretly pays people they’re holding out as “independent” experts, the administration’s defenders will say: “how can you possibly object to our doing this when Obama did it, and not only did you fail to object then, but you defended it?”

love of country, knowledge, will, and righteous action on our side. It will mean knowing the candidates and never voting for anyone of any party who is not on our side. It means constant monitoring of incumbents and voting them out of office in the primaries when they begin to stray, no matter how “important” or “effective at bringing home the bacon” they are. It means never buying a newspaper that does not print all the facts without political spin. It means never watching a TV channel that pushes propaganda instead of facts, including those that push propaganda as entertainment. It means never buying a product from a company that donates to the Left, so that we starve them of the money to undermine this country. It means holding the bureaucrats feet to the fire, and making Congress de-fund and disband any government entity that becomes harmful to the citizens or country.
It means staying awake and aware when things look as if they are going good, because even the best of us can be seduced by the power of office. So, we the citizens must help them stay on the path, and not allow them to stray. If they do stray, we may give them a stern warning and ONE chance to get back on track, and if not, replace them. Down the road, we may want to enact term limits, and limit the time Congress is in session, and only pay them a decent wage for that time so they are forced to earn a living under they laws they pass. We definitely must pass an amendment that prohibits Congress from exempting themselves from the laws they pass. We should insist all laws have a simple, clear title that describes the purpose of the bill, and that all the content of that bill be only for that purpose. We must insist that the pork barrel be stopped. We must insist that the government adhere to the letter and spirit of the Constitution–limited central government, and then do all of the above at the state level also. There are other things, but this would be a start.

  • davesinsanantonio

How do you tell a Communist? Well, it’s someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It’s someone who understands Marx and Lenin.
The more they get their message “out there”, and their tactics too, the more the people really understand. What they in their arrogance cannot accept is that the people have brains, and sometimes are willing to use them. Any one of them may be smarter than anyone of us (just kidding, folks). But, none of them is smarter that all of us together. Since it is part of their leftist religion that any one of them is smarter than all of us together, they will never believe that we can “get it” and reject it.

  • http://impudent.blognation.us/blog kyle8

why be a Marxist? I mean, if you know your own system will collapse and take you with it, why would you pursue it? If it were just political power, then the old Democrat way of supporting Unions and special interests, but being fiscally sound would work a lot better.

They actually think that they are smart enough to make it work.

cass sunstein does what his boss tells him.just like the gangsters.our country is on the verge of walking in lock step like china.they must be stopped in their tracks in the nov. elections.

One interesting thing I discovered when perusing the site is that most of the tweets and comments were by folks from our side. Makes you wonder if even the lefties believe their own rhetoric? Or care…

“Barack Obama’s Rules for Revolution: The Alinsky Model” by David Horowitz, should be read by all. It’s short, costs $3, and explains (with footnotes) exactly where this administration is coming from. Get it. https://secure.donationreport.com/productlist.html?key=WOWRPR5ZNKR8

Astroturf is stronger and more abrasive than real grass and lasts much longer, therefore this discription may be correct. Based on the fact that a survey suggests that there is 40% of the population (recent poll) that has not been, but plans on attending Tea Parties, would suggest that tyranny will not be able to control elections. Hispanics aren’t stupid and neither are different colored Americans. Their eyes are open and they don’t like what they see. There is still a group that “hopes” things will be “alright” and see the world with rose colored glasses. But deep down they are beginning to feel the fear of our government. Even the sheep are getting behind the sheep dogs, because they know the wolves are coming.

  • josh_kahn

There were twin big lib counter-protest banners ballyhooing “The Other 95%” at the D.C. April 15, 2010 Tea Party Rally. They were very professional looking. They were probably from the same consortium.

Bill Press on Fox News talking about Clinton’s comments over the weekend gave this example about hate speech. “Erick Erickson said on CNN that if a census person comes on his porch he was going to meet them with his shot gun and that encouraged a man to shoot a census worker with a shot gum” I get the briefing every morning and I know for a fact that Erick encourages everyone to fill out the census. Erick should take Bill to task over that lie.

First of all, Great article, Eric. Secondly, Superheater–I agree with everything except–I think the investigations should already be underway…The only thing more crooked than congress is the executive branch…

I have looked at the “about” page for the “brianswebstudio.com” site and it has been specifically coded so that if you come there from redstate, you will get sent to a YouTube prank video. I wonder why that is?

Strangely, the web page does the same thing if you come from a similar report that is on gdmp.net, another conservative site.

Simple parlor tricks being used to avoid the truth. Where have I seen that before???

  • martyinaz

Maybe the Attorney General he’s an honest guy. Ummm, on second thought… Maybe we should get the Congress to investigate. Ooooh my, That’s asking the Fox to guard the henhouse. When you are dealing with a corrupt federal government, the ONLY hope is to vote it out, and then do the prosecuting, (aka investigating).

Yes, that it title of a Email which Credo Action is sending out to call attention to their new ?Action? directed at the GOP and the Tea Party from their website.

    GOP hate intensifies
    http://act.credoaction.com/campaign/gop_hate/

Credo Action is a lunatic-left organization which uses SPAM to overload the Email systems of anyone they don’t like. In the above link note the use of the big-lie about the Tea Party. Not a single audio or video recording has been produced to substantiate any of their allegations but the lies continue.

I have a complete mapping Credo Action’s, and their affiliated organization’s, operations in cyberspace including the location of their SMTP SPAM servers and it is not too difficult for a targeted organization to direct such traffic to the circular bit-bucket.
