Coats Flees Indiana for Welcoming Arms of DC Lobbyists, as Democrats Cheer Him On

The NRSC’s handpicked candidate in Indiana has hit some big obstacles on what he hoped would be a coronation in the GOP primary. After a disappointing fundraising haul, he’s refused to comply with Senate ethics rules by not submitting his financial disclosure forms. And now he’s now facing a surge by grassroots candidate Marlin Stutzman who has raised over $160,000 in just a few days and is up all over the state with an effective ad.

So where does a Washington lobbyist like Coats go in his time of need? Where everybody knows his name. In the final week of the campaign, Coats is running away from Indiana voters, and running to his DC lobbyist friends in a desperate dash for cash.

…at separate fundraising events tomorrow morning in Washington as [Coats] seeks to bolster his financial standing in advance of a May 4 primary fight. Both events will be held at the Caucus Room — a restaurant co-founded by Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour — with the entrance fee set at $1,000 for individuals and $2,500 for political action committees.

Coats, who served a decade in the Senate before retiring in 1998, put together a surprisingly weak fundraising quarter — collecting just $379,000 in the first three months of the year. While that total was more than either former Rep. John Hostettler (R) or state Sen. Marlin Stutzman (R) raked in, it was far from the sort of total that put the GOP nomination squarely in Coats’ hands. (Stutzman’s endorsement from South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint came after the March 31 first quarter deadline but should significantly improve the conservative favorite’s cash flow.)

Predictably, Democrats are salivating over the prospect of running against a Coats.

Coats’ post-Senate background as a corporate lobbyist and his long absence from everyday Indiana life are hurdles he’ll have to surmount… “While Coats would have to begin the race — assuming he wins the nomination — as the favorite, I think this is one of those races that is likely to go down to the wire,” said Chris Sautter, a Democratic consultant from Indiana….

Democrats counter that Coats will be in no position to criticize Ellsworth on curbing Wall Street excesses. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has brandished Coats’ lobbying work for Bank for America, which received bailout money, as an example of him being a “Washington, D.C., insider.” Democrats also have noted that Coats hasn’t yet filed a personal disclosure form detailing the sources of his income…
Ellsworth actually can boast a more conservative record on gun owners’ rights than Coats, who voted nearly two decades ago for a ban on some semiautomatic assault-style weapons as well as the Brady law that mandated a five-day waiting period for handgun purchases.

In an early warning sign for Coats, the National Rifle Association has already distributed mailers criticizing his votes on gun issues. Coats said at the GOP debate that he is a supporter of the Second Amendment and would not support any additional restrictions on gun ownership.

As Indiana voters are saying, “We need a fresh face.” We need Marlin Stutzman.

I really wanted to like Coats and be able to support him enthusiastically if he won the primary. But with each new bit of info that comes out about him, that becomes harder and harder to do.

No wonder the Dems are thrilled.

and ran to her lobbyist friends in Washington in desperation. We know how that race ended up for her. It won’t work for Coats, either.

After listening to Sen. McConnell say that he still supports Crist in Florida (Fox News Sunday), I finally realized that the leadership in The Senate is playing the same old game with conservatives.

They are telling us what they think we want to hear hoping that we will listen and allow them to play the same old game with us.

Any candidate that the NRSC supports should be aggressively questioned, especially when the is another conservative candidate running. The only way this is going to change is by giving Sen. DeMint enough colleagues to form a coalition that can elect proper leaders.

I’m really quite shocked to see a Democratic strategic plan (depressing Republican enthusiasm) as a repeated memo on RedState. We sure know how to hand elections to these guys…

Living in Indiana, I cannot get a handle on this race. Friends and family are all over the board. Coats, Stutzman, Hoestettler, seems to be a 3 way mess right now. Being in the belly of the Hoosier beast provides no clrear cut leader/winner, until May 4th, of course. The debate a couple of weeks ago did not clear it up either. All 5 (yes, there are 5 on the GOP side) sounded very good, conservative, small government, pro life, pro 2nd amendement. As we call it here, the Fox News primary, they are all on Fox News all the time.

This strategy gets us our best opportunity for both now and later.
I trust Jim DeMint’s (and Erick’s) judgment of Stutzman v Coats – and he would do better facing Ellsworth than Hostettler would.
In 2012, we need to encourage Sen. Lugar to have a long and happy retirement. Hostettler has the background and spine for that challenge.

Can you imagine moving from Bayh and Lugar to Stutzman and Hostettler? Let’s make it happen!

He has weaker name recognition which means that the public perception of him is more maleable. Being a fresh face means that there is an increased chance of unforced errors, and campaign missteps being used by Democrats to distort Stultzman’s image.
A boring old establishment conservative like Coats is hard to get anyone, even Democrats, excited about.

But honestly, It doesn’t matter what the Democrats want. The Republican will win.

The Dems think that Name ID and money will always win them races. They’re wrong.

Stutzman is weak in head-to-head polling right now simply because his name ID is low. But if he wins the Primary, all that will change – his donations are likely to surge, and the NRSC and RNC will be there to backstop him no matter what – he’ll get his message out.

And in the current environment, *nothing* is going to get Brad “I-voted-No-before-I-voted-Yes-for-ObamaCare” Ellsworth over the hump. That guy is *toast* against any of the three.

Due to limited name ID, Stutzman has much more upside potential than Coats. The mood of 2010 is excellent for a rising, next-generation, not-been-in-Washington conservative – against the Washington establishment Republican(Coats) and against those who go along with the liberal Democrat agenda (Ellsworth). In October, Stutzman will be in a stronger position than Coats could be.

Technology has made it possible for us to by-pass the Republican “leadership” (I will no longer give it a single dime) to work directly on behalf of good candidates — and donate to them, too.

I’m doing my part for our country by making phone calls for Marlin Stutzman — and I live in the belly of the beast: New York City.

If any of you want to help Stutzman’s campaign, copy and paste the address below into your browser:

Final thought: If each of us picked one person to support and promote, REALLY support and promote, we could make a difference.

    Pick your person!

    Make that difference!

We’ve been watching Marlin Stutzman since last October. His stand on strong conservative principles, he’s prolife, wants freedom from a far reaching federal government, and a balanced budget without higher taxes were primary in our decision to support him. His kindness and the same with his campaign staff mean a lot after what we’ve been through with our current representation. We believe that Marlin represents the kind of republicans protecting the republic we want for the next generation as well as now. GoMarlin.com

And Erick fell for it, hook line and sinker.

    I hate when that happens.

In other news, Coats continues to shoot himself in the foot; his followers ignore the limp.

Hostettler, as a Ron Paul type, is not cut from the same cloth as Stutzman.
