Obama’s New Welfare State

Mark Skousen has the top story at Human Events today.

At investment conferences, I often ask the audience, which consists mainly of mature investors: “How many of them are on Social Security and Medicare?” Most raise their hands.

Then I ask, “How many of you are on food stamps?” All the hands go down.

Why? Because there’s a means test to qualify for food stamps. To qualify, a family of four must make less than $28,668 a year. Investors who attend investment conferences tend to be wealthy and make a lot more than $28,668 a year.

Yet, despite this severe income limitation, the number of Americans on food stamps is rising dramatically, and is now approaching 40 million, almost double what it was six years ago.

But since it is mentioned that there is means testing for food stamps and not Social Security, doesn’t beg the question whether there SHOULD be means testing for Social Security? I mean, after all, it is supposed to be Social “Security”, not Social “extra drop in the bucket”. Shouldn’t we start treating it like insurance that is only used when needed? The actual name of the program is OASDI, as in Old Age, Survivors & Disability INSURANCE.

If the point is that many of us are not part of the Welfare state and we are unaware of the new economy of entitlement, then I disagree…

As a net payer, I’ve financed quite a number of payees… It has had a significant effect on my charity or ability to hire and get more people employed.

If the point is that we should pare back all programs where the government is redistributing wealth and reduce the benefits to some very bare bone amount for only those that require it.. I could probably get my head around that as a lesser evil compared to what we have today…
